Exodus 14
Pharaoh Pursues the Israelites
1Then the LORDH3068 saidH1696 toH413 MosesH4872H559, 2“TellH1696 the IsraelitesH1121H3478 toH413 turn backH7725 and encampH2583 beforeH6440 Pi-hahirothH6367, betweenH996 MigdolH4024H996 and the seaH3220. You are to encampH2583 byH5921 the seaH3220, directly oppositeH6440 Baal-zephonH1189H5227.
3For PharaohH6547 will sayH559 of the IsraelitesH1121H3478, ‘TheyH1992 are wandering the landH776 in confusionH943; the wildernessH4057 has boxed themH5462 inH5921.’ 4And I will hardenH23881 Pharaoh’sH6547 heartH3820 so that he will pursueH7291 themH310. But I will gain honorH3513 by means of PharaohH6547 and allH3605 his armyH2428, and the EgyptiansH4713 will knowH3045 thatH3588 IH589 am the LORDH3068.”
So this is whatH3651 the Israelites didH6213.
5When the kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 was toldH5046 thatH3588 the peopleH5971 had fledH1272, PharaohH6547 and his officialsH5650 changedH2015 their mindsH3824 aboutH413 them and saidH559, “WhatH4100H2063 have we doneH6213H3588? We have releasedH7971 IsraelH3478 from serving usH5647.”
6So Pharaoh preparedH631 his chariotH7393 and tookH3947 his armyH5971 with himH5973. 7He tookH3947 600H8337H3967 of the bestH977 chariotsH7393, and allH3605 the other chariotsH7393 of EgyptH4714, with officersH7991 overH5921 all of themH3605.
8And the LORDH3068 hardenedH2388 the heartH3820 of PharaohH6547 kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 so that he pursuedH7291H310 the IsraelitesH1121H3478, who were marching outH3318 defiantlyH3027H7311.2 9The EgyptiansH4713—allH3605 Pharaoh’sH6547 horsesH5483 and chariotsH7393, horsemenH6571 and troopsH2428—pursuedH7291 the Israelites andH310 overtookH5381 themH853 as they campedH2583 byH5921 the seaH3220 nearH5921 Pi-hahirothH6367, oppositeH6440 Baal-zephonH1189.
10As PharaohH6547 approachedH7126, the IsraelitesH1121H3478 looked upH5375H5869 and sawH2009 the EgyptiansH4713 marchingH5265 after themH310, andH1121H3478 they were terrifiedH3372H3966 and cried outH6817 toH413 the LORDH3068. 11They saidH559 toH413 MosesH4872, “Was it becauseH369 there were noH1097 gravesH6913 in EgyptH4714 that you brought usH3947 into the wildernessH4057 to dieH4191? WhatH4100H2063 have you doneH6213 to us by bringing us outH3318 of EgyptH4714? 12Did we notH3808 sayH1696 to youH413 in EgyptH4714H559, ‘Leave us aloneH2308H4480 so that we may serveH5647 the EgyptiansH4713’? ForH3588 it would have been betterH2896 for us to serveH5647 the EgyptiansH4713 than to dieH4191 in the wildernessH4057.”
13But MosesH4872 toldH559H413 the peopleH5971, “Do notH408 be afraidH3372. Stand firmH3320 and you will seeH7200 the LORD’sH3068 salvationH3444, which He will accomplishH6213 for you todayH3117; forH3588 the EgyptiansH834 you see todayH7200, you will neverH3808H5704H5769 seeH7200 againH3254H5750. 14The LORDH3068 will fightH3898 for you; youH859 need only to be stillH2790.”
Parting the Red Sea
15Then the LORDH3068 saidH559 toH413 MosesH4872, “WhyH4100 are you crying outH6817 to MeH413? TellH1696H413 the IsraelitesH1121H3478 to go forwardH5265. 16And as for youH859, lift upH7311 your staffH4294 and stretch outH5186 your handH3027 overH5921 the seaH3220 and divide itH1234, so that the IsraelitesH1121H3478 can goH935 throughH8432 the seaH3220 on dry groundH3004. 17And IH589H2005 will hardenH2388 the heartsH3820 of the EgyptiansH4713 so that they will go inH935 after themH310. Then I will gain honorH3513 by means of PharaohH6547 and allH3605 his armyH2428 and chariotsH7393 and horsemenH6571. 18The EgyptiansH4713 will knowH3045 thatH3588 IH589 am the LORDH3068 when I am honoredH3513 through PharaohH6547, his chariotsH7393, and his horsemenH6571.”
19And the angelH43973 of GodH430, who had goneH1980 beforeH6440 the campH4264 of IsraelH3478, withdrewH5265 and wentH1980 behind themH310. The pillarH5982 of cloudH6051 also movedH5265 from before themH6440 and stoodH5975 behind themH310, 20so that it cameH935 betweenH996 the campsH4264 of EgyptH4714 andH996H4264 IsraelH3478. The cloudH6051 wasH1961 there in the darknessH2822, but it lit upH215 the nightH3915.4 So allH3605 night longH3915 neitherH3808 camp went nearH7126 the otherH2088H413.
21Then MosesH4872 stretched outH5186 his handH3027 overH5921 the seaH3220, and allH3605 that nightH3915 the LORDH3068 drove backH1980 the seaH3220 with a strongH5794 eastH6921 windH7307 that turnedH7760 it into dry landH2724. So the watersH4325 were dividedH1234, 22and the IsraelitesH1121H3478 wentH935 throughH8432 the seaH3220 on dry groundH3004, with wallsH2346 of waterH4325 on their rightH3225 and on their leftH8040.
23And the EgyptiansH4713 chased after themH7291—allH3605 Pharaoh’sH6547 horsesH5483, chariotsH7393, and horsemenH6571—and followedH935 themH310 intoH413H8432 the seaH3220. 24At morningH1242 watchH821, howeverH1961, the LORDH3068 looked downH8259 onH413 the armyH4264 of the EgyptiansH4713 from the pillarH5982 of fireH784 and cloudH6051, and He threw their camp into confusionH2000. 25He caused their chariotH4818 wheelsH212 to wobbleH5493,5 so that they had difficultyH3517 drivingH5090. “Let us fleeH5127 fromH6440 the IsraelitesH3478,” saidH559 the EgyptiansH4714, “forH3588 the LORDH3068 is fightingH3898 for them against EgyptH4714!”
26Then the LORDH3068 saidH559 toH413 MosesH4872, “Stretch outH5186 your handH3027 overH5921 the seaH3220, so that the watersH4325 may flow backH7725 overH5921 the EgyptiansH4714 and their chariotsH7393H5921 and horsemenH6571.” 27So MosesH4872 stretched outH5186 his handH3027 overH5921 the seaH3220, and at daybreakH6437H1242 the seaH3220 returnedH7725 to its normal stateH386. As the EgyptiansH4714 were retreatingH5127, the LORDH3068 swept themH5287 intoH8432 the seaH3220. 28The watersH4325 flowed backH7725 and coveredH3680 the chariotsH7393 and horsemenH6571—the entireH3605 armyH2428 of PharaohH6547 that had chasedH935 the Israelites into the seaH3220. NotH3808 oneH259 of them survivedH7604H5704.
29But the IsraelitesH1121H3478 had walkedH1980 throughH8432 the seaH3220 on dry groundH3004, with wallsH2346 of waterH4325 on their rightH3225 and on their leftH8040. 30ThatH1931 dayH3117 the LORDH3068 savedH3467 IsraelH3478 from the handH3027 of the EgyptiansH4714, and IsraelH3478 sawH7200 the EgyptiansH4714 deadH4191 onH5921 the shoreH8193H3220. 31When IsraelH3478 sawH7200 the greatH1419 powerH3027 thatH834 the LORDH3068 had exercisedH6213 over the EgyptiansH4714, the peopleH5971 fearedH3372 the LORDH3068 and believedH539 in HimH3068 and in His servantH5650 MosesH4872.
