Exodus 33

(Deuteronomy 1:1–8)

1Then the LORDH3068 saidH1696 toH413 MosesH4872, “LeaveH1980 this placeH2088, youH859 and the peopleH5971 you brought upH5927 out of the landH776 of EgyptH4714, and go toH413 the landH776 thatH834 I promisedH7650 to AbrahamH85, IsaacH3327, and JacobH3290 when I saidH559, ‘I will give itH5414 to your descendantsH2233.’ 2And I will sendH7971 an angelH4397 before youH6440, and I will drive outH1644 the CanaanitesH3669, AmoritesH567, HittitesH2850, PerizzitesH6522, HivitesH2340, and JebusitesH2983. 3Go up toH413 a landH776 flowingH2100 with milkH2461 and honeyH1706. ButH3588 I will notH3808 goH5927 with youH7130, becauseH3588 youH859 are a stiff-neckedH7186H6203 peopleH5971; otherwiseH6435, I might destroyH3615 you on the wayH1870.”

4When the peopleH5971 heardH8085 thisH2088 badH7451 newsH1697, they went into mourningH56, and noH3808 oneH376 put onH7896 any of his jewelryH5716H5921. 5For the LORDH3068 had saidH559 toH413 MosesH4872, “TellH559H413 the IsraelitesH1121H3478, ‘YouH859 are a stiff-neckedH7186H6203 peopleH5971. If I should goH5927 with youH7130 for a singleH259 momentH7281, I would destroy youH3615. NowH6258 take offH3381 your jewelryH5716H5921, and I will decideH3045 whatH4100 to doH6213 with you.’”

6So the IsraelitesH1121H3478 stripped themselvesH5337 of their jewelryH5716 from MountH2022 HorebH2722 onward.1

The Tent of Meeting

7Now MosesH4872 used to takeH3947 the tentH168 and pitchH5186 itH2351H4264 at a distanceH7368 outsideH4480 the campH4264. He calledH7121 it the TentH168 of MeetingH4150, andH1961 anyoneH3605 inquiring ofH1245 the LORDH3068 would goH3318 toH413 the TentH168 of MeetingH4150 outsideH2351 the campH4264. 8ThenH1961, whenever MosesH4872 went outH3318 toH413 the tentH168, allH3605 the peopleH5971H5324 would standH6965 at the entrancesH6607 to their own tentsH168 and watchH5027H310 MosesH4872 untilH5704 he enteredH935 the tentH168. 9AsH1961 MosesH4872 enteredH935 the tentH168, the pillarH5982 of cloudH6051 would come downH3381 and remainH5975 at the entranceH6607, and the LORD would speakH1696 withH5973 MosesH4872. 10When allH3605 the peopleH5971 sawH7200 the pillarH5982 of cloudH6051 standingH5975 at the entranceH6607 to the tentH168, theyH3605H5971 would stand upH6965 and worshipH7812, each oneH376 at the entranceH6607 to his own tentH168.

11Thus the LORDH3068 would speakH1696 toH413 MosesH4872 faceH6440 toH413 faceH6440, asH834 a manH376 speaksH1696 toH413 his friendH7453. Then Moses would returnH7725 toH413 the campH4264, but his youngH5288 assistantH8334 JoshuaH3091 sonH1121 of NunH5126 would notH3808 leaveH4185 the tentH8432H168.

The Promise of God’s Presence

12Then MosesH4872 saidH559 toH413 the LORDH3068, “LookH7200, YouH859 have been telling meH559H413, ‘LeadH5927 thisH2088 people upH5971,’ but YouH859 have notH3808 let me knowH3045 whomH834 You will sendH7971 with meH5973. Yet YouH859 have saidH559, ‘I knowH3045 you by nameH8034, and you haveH1571 foundH4672 favorH2580 in My sightH5869.’ 13NowH6258 ifH518 indeedH4994 I have foundH4672 favorH2580 in Your sightH5869, pleaseH4994 let me knowH3045 Your waysH1870, that I may know YouH3045H4616 and findH4672 favorH2580 in Your sightH5869. RememberH7200 thatH3588 thisH2088 nationH1471 is Your peopleH5971.”

14And the LORD answeredH559, “My PresenceH6440 will goH1980 with you, and I will give you restH5117.”

15“IfH518 Your PresenceH6440 does notH369 goH1980 with us,” Moses repliedH559, “do notH408 lead us upH5927 from hereH2088. 16For how thenH4100 can it be knownH3045H645 thatH3588 Your peopleH5971 and IH589 have foundH4672 favorH2580 in Your sightH5869, unlessH3808 You goH1980 with usH5973? How else will weH589H5971 be distinguishedH6395 from allH3605 the other peopleH5971 onH5921 the faceH6440 of the earthH127?”

17So the LORDH3068 saidH559 toH413 MosesH4872, “I will doH6213 thisH2088 veryH1571 thingH1697 you have askedH1696, forH3588 you have foundH4672 favorH2580 in My sightH5869, and I knowH3045 you by nameH8034.”

18Then Moses saidH559, “PleaseH4994 show meH7200 Your gloryH3519.”

19“IH589 will cause allH3605 My goodnessH2898 to passH5674 beforeH5921 youH6440,” the LORD repliedH559, “and I will proclaimH7121 My nameH8034—the LORDH3068—in your presenceH6440. I will have mercyH2603 on whomH834 I have mercyH2603, and I will have compassionH7355 on whomH834 I have compassionH7355.”2

20But He addedH559, “You cannotH3808H3201 seeH7200 My faceH6440, forH3588 noH3808 oneH120 can seeH7200 Me and liveH2421.”

21The LORDH3068 continuedH559, “ThereH2009 is a placeH4725 near MeH854 where you are to standH5324 uponH5921 a rockH6697, 22and whenH1961 My gloryH3519 passes byH5674, I will put youH7760 in a cleftH5366 of the rockH6697 and cover youH5526 with My handH3709H5921 untilH5704 I have passed byH5674. 23Then I will take My handH3709 awayH5493, and you will seeH7200 My backH268; but My faceH6440 must notH3808 be seenH7200.”
