Exodus 2

1

(Acts 7:20–22; Hebrews 11:23)

Now a manH376 of the houseH1004 of LeviH3878 marriedH3947 a LeviteH3878 womanH1323, 2and sheH802 conceivedH2029 and gave birth toH3205 a sonH1121. When she sawH7200 thatH3588 heH1931 was a beautifulH2896 child, she hid himH6845 for threeH7969 monthsH3391.

3But when she couldH3201 noH3808 longerH5750 hide himH6845, she gotH3947 him a papyrusH1573 basketH83921 and coated itH2560 with tarH2564 and pitchH2203. Then she placedH7760 the childH3206 in the basket and setH7760 it among the reedsH5488 alongH5921 the bankH8193 of the NileH2975. 4And his sisterH269 stoodH3320 at a distanceH7350 to seeH3045 whatH4100 would happenH6213 to him.

5Soon the daughterH1323 of PharaohH6547 went downH3381 to batheH7364 inH5921 the NileH2975, and her attendantsH5291 were walkingH1980 alongH5921 the riverbankH3027H2975. And when she sawH7200 the basketH8392 amongH8432 the reedsH5488, she sentH7971 her maidservantH519 to retrieve itH3947. 6When she opened itH6605, she sawH7200 the childH3206, and beholdH2009, the little boyH5288 was cryingH1058. So she had compassionH2550 on himH5921 and saidH559, “This is one ofH2088 the HebrewH5680 childrenH3206.”

7Then his sisterH269 saidH559 toH413 Pharaoh’sH6547 daughterH1323, “Shall I goH1980 and callH7121 one ofH4480 the HebrewH5680 womenH802 to nurseH3243 the childH3206 for you?”

8“Go aheadH1980,” Pharaoh’sH6547 daughterH1323 toldH559 her. And the girlH5959 wentH1980 and calledH7121 the boy’sH3206 motherH517.

9Pharaoh’sH6547 daughterH1323 saidH559 to her, “TakeH1980 thisH2088 childH3206 and nurse himH3243 for me, and IH589 will payH5414 your wagesH7939.” So the womanH802 tookH3947 the boyH3206 and nursed himH5134.

10When the childH3206 had grown olderH1431, she brought himH935 to Pharaoh’sH6547 daughterH1323, and he becameH1961 her sonH1121. She named himH7121H8034 MosesH48722 and explainedH559H3588, “I drew him outH4871 ofH4480 the waterH4325.”

The Rejection and Flight of Moses

(Acts 7:23–29)

One dayH3117H1992, after MosesH4872 had grown upH1431, he went outH3318 toH413 his own peopleH2513 and observedH7200 their hard laborH5450. He sawH7200H376 an EgyptianH4713 beatingH5221H376 a HebrewH5680, one of his own peopleH251. 12After lookingH6437 this wayH3541 and thatH3541 and seeingH7200H3588 noH369 oneH376, he struck downH5221 the EgyptianH4713 and hid his bodyH2934 in the sandH2344.

13The nextH8145 dayH3117 Moses went outH3318 and sawH2009 twoH8147H582 HebrewsH5680 fightingH5327. He askedH559 the one in the wrongH7563, “WhyH4100 are you attackingH5221 your companionH7453?”

14But the man repliedH559, “WhoH4310 madeH7760 youH376 rulerH8269 and judgeH8199 over usH5921?4 Are youH859 planningH559 to kill meH2026 asH834 you killedH2026 the EgyptianH4713?5”

Then MosesH4872 was afraidH3372 and thoughtH559, “This thing I have doneH1697 has surelyH403 become knownH3045.”

15When PharaohH6547 heardH8085 about this matterH2088, he soughtH1245 to killH2026 MosesH4872. But MosesH4872 fledH1272 fromH6440 PharaohH6547 and settledH3427 in the landH776 of MidianH4080, where he sat downH3427 besideH5921 a wellH875.

16Now the priestH3548 of MidianH4080 had sevenH7651 daughtersH1323, and they cameH935 to draw waterH1802 and fillH4390 the troughsH7298 to waterH8248 their father’sH1 flockH6629. 17And when some shepherdsH7462 came alongH935 and drove them awayH1644, MosesH4872 rose upH6965 to help themH3467 and wateredH8248 their flockH6629.

18When the daughters returnedH935 toH413 their fatherH1 ReuelH7467,6 he asked themH559, “WhyH4069 have you returnedH935 so earlyH4116 todayH3117?”

19“An EgyptianH4713 rescued usH5337 fromH3027 the shepherdsH7462,” they repliedH559H376. “He evenH1571 drew waterH1802 for us and wateredH8248 the flockH6629.”

20“So where is heH335?” their father askedH559H413H1323. “WhyH4100H2088 did you leave the manH376 behindH5800? InviteH7121 him to have something to eatH398H3899.”

21MosesH4872 agreedH2974 to stayH3427 withH854 the manH376, and he gaveH5414 his daughterH1323 ZipporahH6855 to Moses in marriageH4872. 22And she gave birth toH3205 a sonH1121, and Moses named himH7121H853H8034 GershomH1647,7 sayingH559, “I have becomeH1961 a foreignerH1616 in a foreignH5237 landH776.”

God Hears the Cry of the Israelites

After a longH7227H1992 timeH3117, the kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 diedH4191. The IsraelitesH1121H3478 groanedH584 and cried outH2199 under theirH4480 burden of slaveryH5656, and their cry for deliveranceH7775 fromH4480 bondageH5656 ascendedH5927 toH413 GodH430.

24So GodH430 heardH8085 their groaningH5009, and HeH430 rememberedH2142 His covenantH1285 withH854 AbrahamH85H854, IsaacH3327H854, and JacobH3290. 25GodH430 sawH7200 the IsraelitesH1121H3478 andH430 took noticeH3045.
