Exodus 16
Manna and Quail from Heaven
1On the fifteenthH2568H6240 dayH3117 of the secondH8145 monthH2320 after they had leftH3318 the landH776 of EgyptH4714, the wholeH3605 congregationH5712H1121 of IsraelH3478 set outH5265 from ElimH362 and cameH935 toH413 the DesertH4057 of SinH5512,1 whichH834 is betweenH996 ElimH362H996 and SinaiH5514. 2And there in the desertH4057 the wholeH3605 congregationH5712H1121 of IsraelH3478 grumbledH3885 againstH5921 MosesH4872H5921 and AaronH175. 3“If onlyH4310H5414 we had diedH4191 by the LORD’sH3068 handH3027 in the landH776 of EgyptH4714!” they said. “There we satH3427 byH5921 potsH5518 of meatH1320 and ateH398 our fillH7648 of breadH3899, butH3588 you have broughtH3318 usH853 intoH413 thisH2088 desertH4057 to starveH7458 thisH2088 wholeH3605 assemblyH6951 to deathH4191!”
4Then the LORDH3068 saidH559 toH413 MosesH4872, “BeholdH2005, I will rain downH4305 breadH3899 fromH4480 heavenH8064 for you. Each dayH3117 the peopleH5971 are to go outH3318 and gatherH3950 enough for that dayH1697. In this wayH4616 I will testH5254 whetherH518 or notH3808 they will followH1980 My instructionsH8451. 5ThenH1961 on the sixthH8345 dayH3117, when they prepareH3559 whatH834 they bring inH935, it will beH1961 twiceH4932 asH5921 muchH834 as they gatherH3950 on the other daysH3117.”
6So MosesH4872 and AaronH175 saidH559 toH413 allH3605 the IsraelitesH1121H3478, “This eveningH6153 you will knowH3045 thatH3588 it was the LORDH3068 who broughtH3318 youH853 out of the landH776 of EgyptH4714, 7and in the morningH1242 you will seeH7200 the LORD’sH3068 gloryH3519, because He has heardH8085 your grumblingH8519 againstH5921 HimH3068. For whoH4100 are weH5168, thatH3588 you should grumbleH3885 against usH5921?”
8And MosesH4872 addedH559, “The LORDH3068 will giveH5414 you meatH1320 to eatH398 this eveningH6153 and breadH3899 to fill youH7646 in the morningH1242, for HeH3068 has heardH8085 your grumblingH8519 against HimH5921. WhoH4100 are weH5168? Your grumblingsH8519 are notH3808 against usH5921H8519 butH3588 againstH5921 the LORDH3068.”
9Then MosesH4872 said toH559H413 AaronH175, “TellH559H413 the wholeH3605 congregationH5712H1121 of IsraelH3478, ‘ComeH7126 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068, forH3588 He has heardH8085 your grumblingH8519.’”
10And asH1961 AaronH175 was speakingH1696 toH413 the wholeH3605 congregationH5712H1121 of IsraelH3478, they lookedH6437 towardH413 the desertH4057, and thereH2009 in a cloudH6051 the gloryH3519 of the LORDH3068 appearedH7200.
11Then the LORDH3068 saidH1696 toH413 MosesH4872H559, 12“I have heardH8085 the grumblingH8519 of the IsraelitesH1121H3478. Tell themH1696H413H559, ‘AtH996 twilightH61532 you will eatH398 meatH1320, and in the morningH1242 you will be filledH7646 with breadH3899. Then you will knowH3045 thatH3588 IH589 am the LORDH3068 your GodH430.’”
That eveningH6153 quailH7958 cameH5927 and coveredH3680 the campH4264, and in the morningH1242 there wasH1961 a layerH7902 of dewH2919 aroundH5439 the campH4264. 14When the layerH7902 of dewH2919 had evaporatedH5927, thereH2009 were thinH1851 flakesH2636 onH5921 the desertH4057 floorH6440, as fineH1851 as frostH3713 onH5921 the groundH776. 15When the IsraelitesH1121H3478 saw itH7200, they askedH559 oneH376H413 anotherH251, “WhatH4478 is itH1931?” ForH3588 they did notH3808 knowH3045 whatH4100 it wasH1931.
So MosesH4872 toldH559 themH413, “ItH1931 is the breadH3899 thatH834 the LORDH3068 has givenH5414 you to eatH402. 16ThisH2088H1697 is whatH834 the LORDH3068 has commandedH6680: ‘Each oneH376 is to gatherH3950 as muchH4480 asH6310 he needsH400. You may takeH3947 an omerH60163 for eachH1538H4557 personH5315H376 in your tentH168.’”
17So the IsraelitesH1121H3478 didH6213 thisH3651. Some gatheredH3950 moreH7235, and some lessH4591. 18When they measured itH4058 by the omerH6016, he who gathered muchH7235 had noH3808 excessH5736, and he who gathered littleH4591 had noH3808 shortfallH2637.4 Each oneH376 gatheredH3950 asH6310 much as he needed to eatH400.
19Then MosesH4872 saidH559 to themH413, “NoH408 oneH376 may keepH3498 any of itH4480 untilH5704 morningH1242.” 20But they did notH3808 listenH8085 toH413 MosesH4872; some peopleH582 leftH3498 part ofH4480 it untilH5704 morningH1242, and it became infestedH7311 with maggotsH8438 and began to smellH887. So MosesH4872 was angryH7107 with themH5921.
21Every morningH1242 each oneH376 gatheredH3950 as muchH6310 as was neededH400, and when the sunH8121 grew hotH2552, it melted awayH4549.
The Sabbath Observed
(Genesis 2:1–3; Hebrews 4:1–11)
On the sixthH8345 dayH3117, they gatheredH3950 twiceH4932 as much foodH3899—twoH8147 omersH6016 per personH2595—and allH3605 the leadersH5387 of the congregationH5712 cameH935 and reportedH5046 this to MosesH4872. 23He told themH559H413, “ThisH1931 is whatH834 the LORDH3068 has saidH1696: ‘TomorrowH4279 is to be a day of complete restH7677, a holyH6944 SabbathH7676 to the LORDH3068. SoH853 bakeH644 whatH834 you want to bakeH644, andH853 boilH1310 whatH834 you want to boilH1310. Then set asideH5117 whateverH3605 remainsH5736 and keep itH4931 untilH5704 morningH1242.’”
24So they set it asideH5117 untilH5704 morningH1242 asH834 MosesH4872 had commandedH6680, and it did notH3808 smellH887 or containH1961 any maggotsH7415. 25“Eat it todayH398H3117,” MosesH4872 saidH559, “becauseH3588 todayH3117 is a SabbathH7676 to the LORDH3068. TodayH3117 you will notH3808 find anythingH4672 in the fieldH7704. 26For sixH8337 daysH3117 you may gatherH3950, but on the seventhH7637 dayH3117, the SabbathH7676, it will not beH1961H3808 there.”
27YetH1961 on the seventhH7637 dayH3117 some ofH4480 the peopleH5971 went outH3318 to gatherH3950, but they did notH3808 find anythingH4672. 28Then the LORDH3068 saidH559 toH413 MosesH4872, “How longH5704H575 will you refuseH3985 to keepH8104 My commandmentsH4687 and instructionsH8451? 29UnderstandH7200 thatH3588 the LORDH3068 has givenH5414 you the SabbathH7676; that is whyH5921H3651 on the sixthH8345 dayH3117 HeH1931 will giveH5414 you breadH3899 for two daysH3117. On the seventhH7637 dayH3117, everyoneH376 must stayH3427 where he isH8478; noH408 oneH376 may leaveH3318 his placeH4725.”
30So the peopleH5971 restedH7673 on the seventhH7637 dayH3117.
The Jar of Manna
31Now the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478 calledH7121H8034 the bread mannaH4478.6 ItH1931 was whiteH3836 like corianderH1407 seedH2233 and tastedH2940 like wafersH6838 made with honeyH1706. 32MosesH4872 saidH559, “ThisH2088H1697 is whatH834 the LORDH3068H4393 has commandedH6680: ‘KeepH4931 an omerH6016 ofH4480 manna for the generations to comeH1755, so thatH4616 they may seeH7200 the breadH3899 I fedH398 you in the wildernessH4057 when I brought youH3318 out of the landH776 of EgyptH4714.’”
33So MosesH4872H413 toldH559 AaronH175, “TakeH3947 aH259 jarH6803 and fill itH5414H8033H4393 with an omerH6016 of mannaH4478. Then placeH5117 itH853 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068 to be preservedH4931 for the generations to comeH1755.” 34And AaronH175 placed itH5117 in front ofH6440 the TestimonyH5715,7 to be preservedH4931 just asH834 the LORDH3068H413 had commandedH6680 MosesH4872.
35The IsraelitesH1121H3478 ateH398 mannaH4478 fortyH705 yearsH8141, untilH5704 they cameH935 toH413 a landH776 where they could settleH3427; they ateH398 mannaH4478 untilH5704 they reachedH935H413 the borderH7097 of CanaanH776H3667. 36(Now an omerH6016 is a tenthH6224 of an ephahH374H1931.)8
