Exodus 20
The Ten Commandments
(Deuteronomy 5:6–21)
1And GodH430 spokeH1696 allH3605 theseH428H559 wordsH1697:
2“IH595 am the LORDH3068 your GodH430, whoH834 brought you outH3318 of the landH776 of EgyptH4714, out of the houseH1004 of slaveryH5650.
3You shall haveH1961 noH3808 otherH312 godsH430 beforeH5921 MeH6440.1 4You shall notH3808 makeH6213 for yourself an idolH6459 in the formH3605 of anythingH8544 in the heavensH8064 aboveH4605, on the earthH776 belowH8478, or in the watersH4325 beneathH8478H776. 5You shall notH3808 bow downH7812 to them orH3808 worship themH5647; forH3588 IH595, the LORDH3068 your GodH430, am a jealousH7067 GodH410, visitingH6485 the iniquityH5771 of the fathersH1 onH5921 their childrenH1121 toH5921 the thirdH8029H5921 and fourthH7256 generations of those who hate MeH8130, 6but showingH6213 loving devotionH2617 to a thousandH505 generations2 of those who love MeH157 and keepH8104 My commandmentsH4687. 7You shall notH3808 takeH5375 the nameH8034 of the LORDH3068 your GodH430 in vainH7723, forH3588 the LORDH3068 will notH3808 leave anyone unpunishedH5352 whoH834 takesH5375 His nameH8034 in vainH7723. 8RememberH2142 the SabbathH7676 dayH3117 by keeping it holyH6942. 9SixH8337 daysH3117 you shall laborH5647 and doH6213 allH3605 your workH4399, 10but the seventhH7637 dayH3117 is a SabbathH7676 to the LORDH3068 your GodH430, on which you must notH3808 doH6213 anyH3605 workH4399—neither youH859, nor your sonH1121 or daughterH1323, nor your manservantH5650 or maidservantH519 or livestockH929, nor the foreignerH1616 withinH834 your gatesH8179. 11ForH3588 in sixH8337 daysH3117 the LORDH3068 madeH6213 the heavensH8064 and the earthH776 and the seaH3220 andH853 allH3605 thatH834 is in them, but on the seventhH7637 dayH3117 He restedH5117. ThereforeH5921H3651 the LORDH3068 blessedH1288 the SabbathH7676 dayH3117 and set it apart as holyH6942. 12HonorH3513 your fatherH1 and motherH517, so thatH4616 your daysH3117 may be longH748 inH5921 the landH127 thatH834 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 is givingH5414 you.3 13You shall notH3808 murderH7523.4 14You shall notH3808 commit adulteryH5003.5 15You shall notH3808 stealH1589.6 16You shall notH3808 bearH6030 falseH8267 witnessH5707 against your neighborH7453.7 17You shall notH3808 covetH25308 your neighbor’sH7453 houseH1004. You shall notH3808 covetH2530 your neighbor’sH7453 wifeH802, or his manservantH5650 or maidservantH519, or his oxH7794 or donkeyH2543, or anythingH3605 thatH834 belongs to your neighborH7453.”
Moses Comforts the People
(Deuteronomy 5:22–33; Hebrews 12:18–29)
18When allH3605 the peopleH5971 witnessedH7200 the thunderH6963 and lightningH3940, the soundingH6963 of the ram’s hornH7782, and the mountainH2022 enveloped in smokeH6226, they trembledH5128 and stoodH5975 at a distanceH7350. 19“SpeakH1696 to usH5973 yourselfH859 and we will listenH8085,” they saidH559 toH413 MosesH4872. “But do notH408 let GodH430 speakH1696 to usH5973, orH6435 we will dieH4191.”
20“Do notH408 be afraidH3372,” MosesH4872 repliedH559. “ForH3588 GodH430 has comeH935 toH5668 test youH5254, so thatH5668H1961 the fear of HimH3374 may be beforeH5921 youH6440, to keepH1115 you from sinningH2398.” 21And the peopleH5971 stoodH5975 at a distanceH7350 as MosesH4872 approachedH5066H413 the thick darknessH6205 whereH834H8033 God wasH430.
Idolatry Forbidden
(1 Corinthians 10:14–22)
22Then the LORDH3068 saidH559 toH413 MosesH4872, “This is whatH3541 you are to tellH559H413 the IsraelitesH1121H3478: ‘YouH859 have seen for yourselvesH7200 thatH3588 I have spokenH1696 toH5973 you fromH4480 heavenH8064. 23You are notH3808 to makeH6213 any godsH430 alongside MeH854; you are notH3808 to makeH6213 for yourselves godsH430 of silverH3701 or goldH2091.
24You are to makeH6213 for Me an altarH4196 of earthH127, and sacrificeH2076 on itH5921 your burnt offeringsH5930 and peace offeringsH8002, your sheep and goatsH6629 and cattleH1241. In everyH3605 placeH4725 whereH834 I cause My nameH8034 to be rememberedH2142, I will comeH935 to youH413 and bless youH1288.
25Now ifH518 you makeH6213 an altarH4196 of stonesH68 for Me, you must notH3808 buildH1129 itH853 with stones shaped by toolsH1496; for ifH3588 you useH5130 a chiselH2719 on itH5921, you will defile itH2490. 26And you must notH3808 go upH5927 toH5921 My altarH4196 on stepsH4609, lestH834 your nakednessH6172 be exposedH1540 on itH5921.’
