1 Samuel 22
Revised Version 1895
1DavidH1732 therefore departedH3381 thence, and escapedH4422 to the caveH4631 of AdullamH5725: and when his brethrenH251 and allH3605 his father’sH1 houseH1004 heardH8085 it, they wentH3381 downH3381 thither to him. 2And everyH3605 one that was in distressH4689, and everyH3605 one that was in debt, and everyH3605 one that was discontented, gatheredH6908 themselvesH5315 unto him; and he becameH1961 captainH8269 over them: and there were with him aboutH1961 fourH702 hundredH3967 menH376. 3And DavidH1732 wentH3318 thence to MizpehH4708 of MoabH4124: and he saidH559 unto the kingH4428 of MoabH4124, LetH4994 my fatherH1 and my motherH517, I prayH4994 thee, comeH3318 forthH3318, and be with youH834, tillH5704 I knowH3045 whatH4100 GodH430 will doH6213 for meH413. 4And he broughtH1961 them beforeH6440 the kingH4428 of MoabH4124: and they dweltH3427 with him allH3605 the whileH1961 that DavidH1732 was in the hold. 5And the prophetH5030 GadH1410 saidH559 unto DavidH1732, AbideH3427 notH3808 in the hold; depart, and getH935 thee intoH413 the landH776 of JudahH3063. Then DavidH1732 departedH935, and cameH935 intoH413 the forestH3293 of HerethH2802. 6And SaulH7586 heardH8085 that DavidH1732 was discoveredH3045, and the menH376 that were with him: nowH3588 SaulH7586 was sittingH3427 in GibeahH1390, underH8478 the tamariskH815 treeH815 in Ramah, with his spearH2595 in his handH3027, and allH3605 his servantsH5650 were standingH5324 aboutH5921 him. 7And SaulH7586 saidH559 unto his servantsH5650 that stoodH5324 aboutH5921 him, HearH8085 nowH4994, ye Benjamites; will the sonH1121 of JesseH3448 giveH5414 everyH3605 one of youH5414 fieldsH7704 and vineyardsH3754, will he makeH7760 youH5414 allH3605 captainsH8269 of thousandsH505 and captainsH8269 of hundredsH3967; 8that allH3605 of youH3588 have conspiredH7194 againstH5921 meH5921, and there is noneH369 that discloseth to meH5921 when my sonH1121 maketh a league with the sonH1121 of JesseH3448, and there is noneH369 of youH3588 that is sorry for meH5921, or discloseth unto meH5921 that my sonH1121 hath stirredH6965 upH6965 my servantH5650 againstH5921 meH5921, to lieH693 in waitH693, as at this dayH3117? 9Then answeredH559 DoegH1673 the EdomiteH130, whichH1931 stoodH5324 by the servantsH5650 of SaulH7586, and saidH559, I sawH7200 the sonH1121 of JesseH3448 comingH935 to NobH5011, to AhimelechH288 the sonH1121 of AhitubH285. 10And he inquiredH7592 of the LORDH3068 for him, and gaveH5414 him victuals, and gaveH5414 him the swordH2719 of GoliathH1555 the PhilistineH6430. 11Then the kingH4428 sentH7971 to callH7121 AhimelechH288 the priestH3548, the sonH1121 of AhitubH285, and allH3605 his father’sH1 houseH1004, the priestsH3548 that were in NobH5011: and they cameH935 allH3605 of them to the kingH4428. 12And SaulH7586 saidH559, HearH8085 nowH4994, thou sonH1121 of AhitubH285. And he answeredH559, HereH2005 I am, my lordH113. 13And SaulH7586 saidH559 unto him, WhyH4100 have ye conspiredH7194 againstH5921 meH413, thou and the sonH1121 of JesseH3448, in that thou hast givenH5414 him breadH3899, and a swordH2719, and hast inquiredH7592 of GodH430 for him, that he should riseH6965 againstH5921 meH413, to lieH693 in waitH693, as at this dayH3117? 14Then AhimelechH288 answeredH559 the kingH4428, and saidH559, And who among allH3605 thy servantsH5650 is soH5493 faithfulH539 as DavidH1732, whichH4310 is the king’sH4428 son in law, and is takenH5493 intoH413 thy council, and is honourable in thine houseH1004? 15Have I todayH3117 begunH2490 to inquireH7592 of GodH430 for him? be it farH2486 from meH7760: letH408 notH3808 the kingH4428 imputeH7760 anyH3605 thingH1697 unto his servantH5650, norH3808 to allH3605 the houseH1004 of my fatherH1: for thy servantH5650 knoweth nothingH3808 of allH3605 this, lessH3588 or moreH3808. 16And the kingH4428 saidH559, Thou shalt surelyH4191 dieH4191, AhimelechH288, thou, and allH3605 thy father’sH1 houseH1004. 17And the kingH4428 saidH559 unto the guardH7323 that stoodH5324 aboutH5921 him, TurnH5437, and slayH4191 the priestsH3548 of the LORDH3068; becauseH3588 their handH3027 also is with DavidH1732, and becauseH3588 they knewH3045 that he fledH1272, and didH3808 notH3808 disclose it to meH7971. But the servantsH5650 of the kingH4428 would notH3808 putH4191 forthH7971 their handH3027 to fallH6293 uponH5921 the priestsH3548 of the LORDH3068. 18And the kingH4428 saidH559 to DoegH1673, TurnH5437 thou, and fallH6293 uponH6293 the priestsH3548. And DoegH1673 the EdomiteH130 turnedH5437, and he fellH6293 uponH6293 the priestsH3548, and he slew on that dayH3117 fourscore and fiveH2568 personsH376 that didH376 wear a linenH906 ephodH646. 19And NobH5011, the cityH5892 of the priestsH3548, smoteH5221 he with the edgeH6310 of the swordH2719, both menH376 and womenH802, childrenH5768 and sucklings, and oxenH7794 and asses and sheepH7716, with the edgeH6310 of the swordH2719. 20And one of the sonsH1121 of AhimelechH288 the sonH1121 of AhitubH285, namedH8034 AbiatharH54, escapedH4422, and fledH1272 afterH310 DavidH1732. 21And AbiatharH54 toldH5046 DavidH1732 that SaulH7586 had slainH2026 the LORD’SH3068 priestsH3548. 22And DavidH1732 saidH559 unto AbiatharH54, I knewH3045 on that dayH3117, when DoegH1673 the EdomiteH130 was there, that he would surelyH3588 tellH5046 SaulH7586: I have occasioned the deathH5315 of allH3605 the personsH5315 of thy father’sH1 houseH1004. 23AbideH3427 thou with meH5315, fearH3372 notH408; for he that seeketh my lifeH5315 seeketh thy lifeH5315: for with meH5315 thou shalt be in safeguard.
