1 For this Melchizedek Μελχισέδεκ, Melchisedek G3198 , king βασιλεὺς basileus G935 of Salem Σαλήμ, Salēm G4532 , priest ἱερεὺς hi'ereus G2409 of God θεοῦ theou G2316 Most ὑψίστου, hupsistou G5310 High G5310 , who met Abraham Ἀβραὰμ Abraam G11 returning ὑποστρέφοντι hupostrephonti G5290 from the slaughter of the kings βασιλέων basileōn G935 and blessed G2127 him , 2 to whom also καὶ kai G2532 Abraham Ἀβραάμ, Abraam G11 divided a tenth part of all ( being G1510 first πρῶτον prōton G4413 , by interpretation, King βασιλεὺς basileus G935 of righteousness δικαιοσύνης dikaiosunēs G1343 , and then also καὶ kai G2532 King βασιλεὺς basileus G935 of Salem Σαλήμ, Salēm G4532 , which is G1510 , King βασιλεὺς basileus G935 of peace εἰρήνης, eirēnēs G1515 ; 3 without father , without mother , without genealogy , having neither beginning of days ἡμερῶν, hēmerōn G2250 nor end τέλος telos G5056 of life ζωῆς zōēs G2222 , but made like unto the Son υἱῷ huiō G5207 of God θεοῦ theou G2316 ), abideth a priest ἱερεὺς hi'ereus G2409 continually . 4 Now δὲ de G1161 consider how πηλίκος pēlikos G4080 great this man G3778 was , unto whom Abraham Ἀβραὰμ Abraam G11 , the patriarch πατριάρχης. patriarchēs G3966 , gave G1325 a tenth out of the chief spoils . 5 And they indeed of the sons υἱῶν huiōn G5207 of Levi Λευὶ Leui G3017 that receive G2983 the priest’s office have commandment ἐντολὴν entolēn G1785 to take G2983 tithes of the people λαὸν laon G2992 according κατὰ kata G2596 to the law νόμον, nomon G3551 , that is G1510 , of their brethren , though these have come ἐξεληλυθότας exelēluthotas G1831 out of the loins ὀσφύος osphuos G3751 of Abraham Ἀβραάμ. Abraam G11 : 6 but he whose genealogy is not counted from them hath taken tithes of Abraham Ἀβραάμ· Abraam G11 , and hath blessed G2127 him that hath the promises G1860 . 7 But without any dispute the less is blessed G2127 of the better . 8 And here ὧδε hōde G5602 men G444 that die G599 receive λαμβάνουσιν lambanousin G2983 tithes ; but there one , of whom it is witnessed G3140 that he liveth. 9 And , so to say G3004 , through Abraham Ἀβραὰμ Abraam G11 even G2532 Levi , who receiveth tithes , hath paid tithes ; 11 Now if there was G1510 perfection through the Levitical priesthood ἱερωσύνης hi'erōsunēs G2420 ( for under it hath the people λαὸς laos G2992 received the law ), what further need χρεία chreia G5532 was G1510 there that another priest ἱερέα hi'erea G2409 should arise ἀνίστασθαι anistasthai G450 after the order τάξιν taxin G5010 of Melchizedek Μελχισέδεκ Melchisedek G3198 , and not be G1510 reckoned after the order τάξιν taxin G5010 of Aaron Ἀαρὼν Aarōn G2 ? 12 For the priesthood ἱερωσύνης hi'erōsunēs G2420 being changed, there is made of necessity ἀνάγκης anagkēs G318 a change also καὶ kai G2532 of the law νόμου nomou G3551 . 13 For he of whom these things ταῦτα, tauta G3778 are said G3004 belongeth to another tribe φυλῆς phulēs G5443 , from which no man G3778 hath given attendance at the altar θυσιαστηρίῳ. thusiastēriō G2379 . 14 For it is evident πρόδηλον prodēlon G4271 that our Lord κύριος kurios G2962 hath sprung out of Judah Ἰούδα Iouda G2455 ; as to which tribe φυλὴν phulēn G5443 Moses Μωϋσῆς Mōusēs G3475 spake nothing concerning περὶ peri G4012 priests ἱερέων hi'ereōn G2409 . 15 And what we say is G1510 yet more G2089 abundantly evident, if after the likeness of Melchizedek Μελχισέδεκ Melchisedek G3198 there ariseth another priest ἱερεὺς hi'ereus G2409 , 16 who hath been made , not after the law νόμον nomon G3551 of a carnal commandment ἐντολῆς entolēs G1785 , but after the power δύναμιν dunamin G1411 of an endless life ζωῆς zōēs G2222 : 17 for it is witnessed G3140 of him , Thou art a priest ἱερεὺς hi'ereus G2409 for ever After the order τάξιν taxin G5010 of Melchizedek Μελχισέδεκ.¶ Melchisedek G3198 . 18 For there is a disannulling of a foregoing commandment ἐντολῆς entolēs G1785 because of its weakness ἀσθενὲς asthenes G772 and unprofitableness 19 ( for the law νόμος, nomos G3551 made G5048 nothing perfect ἐτελείωσεν eteleiōsen G5048 ), and a bringing in thereupon of a better hope ἐλπίδος elpidos G1680 , through which we draw ἐγγίζομεν engizomen G1448 nigh unto God θεῷ. theō G2316 . 20 And inasmuch as it is G1510 not without the taking of an oath ὁρκωμοσίας. horkōmosias G3728 21 ( for they indeed have been made priests ἱερεὺς hi'ereus G2409 without an oath ὁρκωμοσίας horkōmosias G3728 ; but he with an oath G3728 by him that saith of him , The Lord κύριος kurios G2962 sware and will not repent himself , Thou art a priest G2409 for ever ); 22 by so much τοσοῦτο tosouto G5118 also καὶ kai G2532 hath Jesus Ἰησοῦς.¶ Iēsous G2424 become γέγονεν gegonen G1096 the surety of a better covenant διαθήκης diathēkēs G1242 . 24 but he , because he abideth for ever , hath his priesthood ἱερωσύνην· hi'erōsunēn G2420 unchangeable. 25 Wherefore also καὶ kai G2532 he is able δύναται dunatai G1410 to save σῴζειν sōzein G4982 to the uttermost them that draw προσερχομένους proserchomenous G4334 near unto God θεῷ theō G2316 through him , seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them . 26 For such a high ἀρχιερεύς, archiereus G749 priest G749 became γενόμενος· genomenos G1096 us, holy ὅσιος, hosios G3741 , guileless, undefiled ἀμίαντος, amiantos G283 , separated G5563 from sinners ἁμαρτωλῶν, hamartōlōn G268 , and made higher than the heavens οὐρανῶν ouranōn G3772 ; 27 who needeth not daily , like those high ἀρχιερεῖς archiereis G749 priests G749 , to offer G4374 up sacrifices G2378 , first for his own ἰδίων idiōn G2398 sins ἁμαρτιῶν hamartiōn G266 , and then ἔπειτα epeita G1899 for the sins G266 of the people λαοῦ· laou G2992 : for this he did once ἐφάπαξ ephapax G2178 for all , when he offered G4374 up himself . 28 For the law νόμος nomos G3551 appointeth men G444 high ἀρχιερεῖς archiereis G749 priests G749 , having infirmity G769 ; but the word λόγος logos G3056 of the oath ὁρκωμοσίας horkōmosias G3728 , which was after the law νόμον nomon G3551 , appointeth a Son υἱὸν huion G5207 , perfected τετελειωμένον.¶ teteleiōmenon G5048 for evermore. ← Hebrews 6 Hebrews 8 → Commentaries on Hebrews 7 American Standard Version — 1901 — Public Domain
