A Prophecy against Zedekiah

1The wordהַדָּבָ֛רha.da.VarH1697that cameהָיָ֥הha.YahH1961to Jeremiahיִרְמְיָ֖הוּyir.me.Ya.huH3414from the Lordיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068, whenNebuchadnezzarוּנְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֣רu.ne.vu.khad.re.TzarH5019kingמֶֽלֶךְ־Me.lekh-H4428of Babylonבָּבֶ֣ל׀ba.VelH894and allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605his armyחֵיל֡וֹchei.LoH2428, withallוְכָל־ve.kholH3605the kingdomsמַמְלְכ֣וֹתmam.le.KhotH4467of the earthאֶרֶץ֩'e.RetzH776that were under hiscontrolמֶמְשֶׁ֨לֶתmem.She.letH4475and allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605the peoplesהָעַמִּ֗יםha.'a.MimH5971,were fightingנִלְחָמִ֧יםnil.cha.MimH3898againstH5921Jerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִַ֛םye.ru.sha.LimH3389and allכָּל־kol-H3605its citiesעָרֶ֖יהָ'a.Rei.haH5892,sayingלֵאמֹֽר׃le.MorH559,

2“ThisH3541isH3541whatH3541the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068,the Godאֱלֹהֵ֣י'e.lo.HeiH430of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478saysאָמַ֤ר'a.MarH559: ‘Goהָלֹךְ֙ha.loKhH1980and speakוְאָ֣מַרְתָּ֔ve.'A.mar.taH559to Zedekiahצִדְקִיָּ֖הוּtzid.ki.Ya.huH6667kingמֶ֣לֶךְMe.lekhH4428of Judahיְהוּדָ֑הye.hu.DahH3063and sayוְאָמַרְתָּ֣ve.'a.mar.TaH559to him, “ThisH3541isH3541whatH3541the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068saysאָמַ֣ר'a.MarH559: ‘BeholdH2009,I am handingבְּיַ֣דbe.YadH5414 H3027thisH2088cityהָעִ֤ירha.'IrH5892overH5414to the kingמֶֽלֶךְ־Me.lekh-H4428of Babylonבָּבֶ֔לba.VelH894, andhe will burnוּשְׂרָפָ֖הּu.se.ra.FahH8313it with fireבָּאֵֽשׁ׃ba.'EshH784.

3And as for you,you will not escapeתִמָּלֵט֙ti.ma.LetH4422from his handמִיָּד֔וֹmi.ya.DoH3027,for you will assuredlyתָּפֹ֣שׂta.FosH8610be caughtתִּתָּפֵ֔שׂti.ta.FesH8610and handedוּבְיָד֖וֹu.ve.ya.DoH5414 H3027overH5414to him; and you willseeתִּרְאֶ֗ינָהtir.'Ei.nahH7200the kingמֶֽלֶךְ־Me.lekh-H4428of Babylonבָּבֶ֜לba.VelH894eyeוְֽ֠עֵינֶיךָVe.'ei.nei.khaH5869to eyeעֵינֵ֨י'ei.NeiH5869,and he will speakיְדַבֵּ֖רye.da.BerH1696with youfaceוּפִ֛יהוּu.Fi.huH6310to faceפִּ֥יךָPi.khaH6310,and you will goתָּבֽוֹא׃ta.Vo'H935to Babylonוּבָבֶ֥לu.va.VelH894.’”’

4Yetאַ֚ךְ'akhH389hearשְׁמַ֣עshe.Ma'H8085the wordדְּבַר־de.var-H1697of the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068,Zedekiahצִדְקִיָּ֖הוּtzid.ki.Ya.huH6667kingמֶ֣לֶךְMe.lekhH4428of Judahיְהוּדָ֑הye.hu.DahH3063!ThisH3541isH3541whatH3541the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068saysאָמַ֤ר'a.MarH559concerningעָלֶ֔יךָ'a.Lei.khaH5921you: ‘You will not dieתָמ֖וּתta.MutH4191by the swordבֶּחָֽרֶב׃be.Cha.revH2719.

5You will dieתָּמ֗וּתta.MutH4191in peaceבְּשָׁל֣וֹםbe.sha.LomH7965; and as spiceswere burnedוּֽכְמִשְׂרְפ֣וֹתu.khe.mis.re.FotH4955for your fathersאֲ֠בוֹתֶיךָ'A.vo.tei.khaH1,the formerהָרִֽאשֹׁנִ֜יםha.ri.sho.NimH7223kingsהַמְּלָכִ֨יםha.me.la.KhimH4428whoאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834were beforeלְפָנֶ֗יךָle.fa.Nei.khaH6440you, soכֵּ֚ןkenH3651they willburnיִשְׂרְפוּ־yis.re.fu-H8313spices for you; andthey will mournיִסְפְּדוּ־yis.pe.du-H5594for you, crying, “Ohוְה֥וֹיve.HoH1945, mylordאָד֖וֹן'a.DonH113!”’For I have spokenדִבַּ֖רְתִּיdi.Bar.tiH1696the wordדָבָ֥רda.VarH1697,”declaresנְאֻם־ne.'um-H5002the Lordיְהוָֽה׃ סYah.wehH3068.

6Then Jeremiahיִרְמְיָ֣הוּyir.me.Ya.huH3414the prophetהַנָּבִ֔יאha.na.Vi'H5030spokeוַיְדַבֵּר֙vay.da.BerH1696allכָּל־kol-H3605theseהָאֵ֖לֶּהha.'E.lehH428wordsהַדְּבָרִ֥יםha.de.va.RimH1697to Zedekiahצִדְקִיָּ֖הוּtzid.ki.Ya.huH6667kingמֶ֣לֶךְMe.lekhH4428of Judahיְהוּדָ֑הye.hu.DahH3063in Jerusalemבִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃bi.ru.sha.LimH3389

7when the armyוְחֵ֣ילve.CheilH2428of the kingמֶֽלֶךְ־Me.lekh-H4428of Babylonבָּבֶ֗לba.VelH894was fightingנִלְחָמִים֙nil.cha.MimH3898againstH5921Jerusalemיְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔םye.Ru.sha.LimH3389and allכָּל־kol-H3605the remainingהַנּֽוֹתָר֑וֹתha.no.ta.RotH3498citiesעָרֵ֥י'a.ReiH5892of Judahיְהוּדָ֖הye.hu.DahH3063, that is,Lachishלָכִישׁ֙la.KhishH3923andAzekahעֲזֵקָ֔ה'a.ze.KahH5825, for they aloneremainedנִשְׁאֲר֛וּnish.'a.RuH7604asfortifiedמִבְצָֽר׃ פmiv.TzarH4013citiesבְּעָרֵ֥יbe.'a.ReiH5892among the citiesעָרֵ֥י'a.ReiH5892of Judahיְהוּדָ֖הye.hu.DahH3063.

8The wordהַדָּבָ֛רha.da.VarH1697that cameהָיָ֥הha.YahH1961to Jeremiahיִרְמְיָ֖הוּyir.me.Ya.huH3414from the Lordיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068afterאַחֲרֵ֡י'a.cha.ReiH310Kingהַמֶּ֨לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428Zedekiahצִדְקִיָּ֜הוּtzid.ki.Ya.huH6667hadmadeכְּרֹת֩ke.RotH3772a covenantבְּרִ֗יתbe.RitH1285with allכָּל־kol-H3605the peopleהָעָם֙ha.'AmH5971whoH834were in Jerusalemבִּירֽוּשָׁלִַ֔םbi.ru.sha.LimH3389, toproclaimלִקְרֹ֥אlik.Ro'H7121releaseדְּרֽוֹר׃de.RorH1865to them:

9that eachH376personH376was to setלְ֠שַׁלַּחLe.sha.lachH7971his maleעַבְדּ֞וֹav.DoH5650servantH5650freeחָפְשִׁ֑יםcha.fe.ShimH2670and eachH376his femaleשִׁפְחָת֛וֹshif.cha.ToH8198servantH8198, aHebrewהָעִבְרִ֥יha.'iv.RiH5680manH5680or a Hebrewוְהָעִבְרִיָּ֖הve.ha.'iv.ri.YahH5680womanH5680, so thatnoלְבִלְתִּ֧יle.vil.TiH1115oneH376would keepH5647them, his Jewishבִּיהוּדִ֥יbi.hu.DiH3064brotherאָחִ֖יהוּ'a.Chi.huH251or sister,inH5647bondageH5647.

10And allכָל־khol-H3605theofficialsהַשָּׂרִ֨יםha.sa.RimH8269and allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605the peopleהָעָ֜םha.'AmH5971obeyedוַיִּשְׁמְעוּ֩vai.yish.me.'UH8085whoאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834had enteredבָּ֣אוּBa.'uH935into the covenantבַבְּרִ֗יתva.be.RitH1285that eachH376personH376was to setלְ֠שַׁלַּחLe.sha.lachH7971his maleעַבְדּ֞וֹav.DoH5650servantH5650freeחָפְשִׁ֔יםcha.fe.ShimH2670and eachH376his femaleשִׁפְחָתוֹ֙shif.cha.ToH8198servantH8198,so that noH1115oneH1115would keepH5647them inH5647bondageH5647anyH5750longerH5750;they obeyedוַֽיִּשְׁמְע֖וּvai.yish.me.'UH8085,and setוַיְשַׁלֵּֽחוּ׃vay.sha.Le.chuH7971them free.

11But afterwardאַחֲרֵי־ כֵ֔ן'a.cha.rei- KhenH310 H3651they turnedוַיָּשׁ֙וּבוּ֙vai.ya.Shu.vuH7725aroundH7725and tookH7725backוַיָּשִׁ֗בוּvai.ya.Shi.vuH7725the maleהָֽעֲבָדִים֙ha.'a.va.DimH5650servantsH5650and the femaleהַשְּׁפָח֔וֹתha.she.fa.ChotH8198servantsH8198whomאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834they had setשִׁלְּח֖וּshi.le.ChuH7971freeחָפְשִׁ֑יםcha.fe.ShimH2670,and broughtH3533them intoH3533subjectionH3533as maleלַעֲבָדִ֖יםla.'a.va.DimH5650servantsH5650and as femaleוְלִשְׁפָחֽוֹת׃ סve.lish.fa.ChotH8198servantsH8198.

12Then the wordדְבַר־de.var-H1697of the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068cameוַיְהִ֤יvay.HiH1961to Jeremiahיִרְמְיָ֔הוּyir.me.Ya.huH3414from the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068,sayingלֵאמֹֽר׃le.MorH559,

13“ThisH3541isH3541whatH3541the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068,the Godאֱלֹהֵ֣י'e.lo.HeiH430of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478saysאָמַ֥ר'a.MarH559: ‘Imadeכָּרַ֤תִּֽיka.Ra.tiH3772a covenantבְרִית֙ve.RitH1285with your forefathersאֲב֣וֹתֵיכֶ֔ם'a.Vo.tei.KhemH1on the dayבְּי֨וֹםbe.YomH3117that IbroughtH3318them outH3318of the landמֵאֶ֣רֶץme.'E.retzH776of Egyptמִצְרַ֔יִםmitz.Ra.yimH4714,from the houseמִבֵּ֥יתmi.BeitH1004of bondageעֲבָדִ֖ים'a.va.DimH5650,sayingלֵאמֹֽר׃le.MorH559,

14“At the endמִקֵּ֣ץmi.KetzH7093of sevenשֶׁ֣בַעShe.va'H7651yearsשָׁנִ֡יםsha.NimH8141eachאִישׁ֩'ishH376of you shall setH7971freeH7971his Hebrewהָעִבְרִ֜יha.'iv.RiH5680brotherאָחִ֨יו'a.ChivH251whoאֲשֶֽׁר־'a.Sher-H834has been soldיִמָּכֵ֣רyi.ma.KherH4376to you and has servedוַעֲבָֽדְךָ֙va.'a.va.de.KhaH5647you for sixשֵׁ֣שׁsheshH8337yearsשָׁנִ֔יםsha.NimH8141,and you shall sendH7971him outH7971freeחָפְשִׁ֖יcha.fe.ShiH2670from you.” But your forefathersאֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶם֙'a.vo.tei.KhemH1did not obeyשָׁמְע֤וּsha.me.'UH8085Me nor inclineהִטּ֖וּhi.TuH5186their earאָזְנָֽם׃'a.ze.NamH241to Me.

15Although recentlyהַיּ֗וֹםhai.YomH3117you hadturnedוַתָּשֻׁ֨בוּva.ta.Shu.vuH7725anddoneוַתַּעֲשׂ֤וּva.ta.'a.SuH6213whatH3477isH3477rightהַיָּשָׁר֙hai.ya.SharH3477in My sightבְּעֵינַ֔יbe.'ei.NaiH5869,eachH376oneH376proclaimingלִקְרֹ֥אlik.Ro'H7121releaseדְר֖וֹרde.RorH1865to his neighborלְרֵעֵ֑הוּle.re.'E.huH7453, and you hadmadeוַתִּכְרְת֤וּva.tikh.re.TuH3772a covenantבְרִית֙ve.RitH1285beforeלְפָנַ֔יle.fa.NaiH6440Mein the houseבַּבַּ֕יִתba.Ba.yitH1004whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834is calledנִקְרָ֥אnik.Ra'H7121by My nameשְׁמִ֖יshe.MiH8034.

16Yet youturnedוַתָּשֻׁ֙בוּ֙va.ta.Shu.vuH7725andprofanedוַתְּחַלְּל֣וּva.te.cha.le.LuH2490My nameשְׁמִ֔יshe.MiH8034,and eachH376personH376tookH7725backוַתָּשִׁ֗בוּva.ta.Shi.vuH7725his maleH5650servantH5650and eachH376his femaleשִׁפְחָת֔וֹshif.cha.ToH8198servantH8198whomאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834you had setשִׁלַּחְתֶּ֥םshi.lach.TemH7971freeחָפְשִׁ֖יםcha.fe.ShimH2670according to their desireלְנַפְשָׁ֑םle.naf.ShamH5315,and you broughtH3533them intoH3533subjectionH3533to be your maleH5650and femaleוְלִשְׁפָחֽוֹת׃ סve.lish.fa.ChotH8198servantsH5650 H8198.’

17“Thereforeלָכֵן֮la.KhenH3651thisH3541isH3541whatH3541the Lordיְהוָה֒Yah.wehH3068saysאָמַ֣ר'a.MarH559: ‘You have not obeyedשְׁמַעְתֶּ֣םshe.ma'.TemH8085Me in proclaimingלִקְרֹ֣אlik.Ro'H7121releaseדְר֔וֹרde.RorH1865,eachH376oneH376to his brotherלְאָחִ֖יוle.'a.ChivH251and eachH376to his neighborלְרֵעֵ֑הוּle.re.'E.huH7453.BeholdH2009, I amproclaimingקֹרֵא֩ko.Re'H7121areleaseדְּר֜וֹרde.RorH1865to you,’ declaresנְאֻם־ne.'um-H5002the Lordיְהוָ֗הYah.wehH3068, ‘to theswordהַחֶ֙רֶב֙ha.Che.revH2719,to the plagueהַדֶּ֣בֶרha.De.verH1698,and to the famineהָרָעָ֔בha.ra.'AvH7458;and I will makeוְנָתַתִּ֤יve.na.ta.TiH5414you aterrorH2113to allלְכֹ֖לle.KholH3605the kingdomsמַמְלְכ֥וֹתmam.le.KhotH4467of the earthהָאָֽרֶץ׃ha.'A.retzH776.

18I will giveוְנָתַתִּ֣יve.na.ta.TiH5414the peopleH376who haveviolatedהָעֹֽבְרִים֙ha.'oe.RimH5674My covenantבְּרִתִ֔יbe.ri.TiH1285,whoH834have not fulfilledהֵקִ֙ימוּ֙he.Ki.muH6965the wordsדִּבְרֵ֣יdiv.ReiH1697of the covenantהַבְּרִ֔יתha.be.RitH1285whichH834they madeכָּרְת֖וּka.re.TuH3772beforeלְפָנָ֑יle.fa.NaiH6440Me, when theycutכָּרְת֣וּka.re.TuH3772the calfהָעֵ֙גֶל֙ha.'E.gelH5695in twoלִשְׁנַ֔יִםlish.Na.yimH8147and passedוַיַּעַבְר֖וּvai.ya.'av.RuH5674betweenבֵּ֥יןbeinH996its partsבְּתָרָֽיו׃be.ta.RavH1335--

20I will handH5414 H3207them overH5414to their enemiesH340and to those whoseekמְבַקְשֵׁ֣יme.vak.SheiH1245their livesנַפְשָׁ֑םnaf.ShamH5315. And theirdeadH5038bodiesH5038will be foodלְמַֽאֲכָ֔לle.ma.'a.KhalH3978for the birdsלְע֥וֹףle.'ofH5775of the skyהַשָּׁמַ֖יִםha.sha.Ma.yimH8064and the animalsוּלְבֶהֱמַ֥תu.le.ve.he.MatH929of the earthהָאָֽרֶץ׃ha.'A.retzH776.

21Zedekiahצִדְקִיָּ֨הוּtzid.ki.Ya.huH6667kingמֶֽלֶךְ־Me.lekh-H4428of Judahיְהוּדָ֜הye.hu.DahH3063and his officialsשָׂרָ֗יוsa.RavH8269I will also handH5414 H3027overH5414to their enemiesH340and to those who seekמְבַקְשֵׁ֣יme.vak.SheiH1245their livesנַפְשָׁ֑םnaf.ShamH5315,and to the armyחֵ֚ילcheilH2428of the kingמֶ֣לֶךְMe.lekhH4428of Babylonבָּבֶ֔לba.VelH894which haswithdrawnהָעֹלִ֖יםha.'o.LimH5927from you.

22BeholdH2009,I am going to giveH6680aH6680commandמְצַוֶּ֜הme.tza.VehH6680,’declaresנְאֻם־ne.'um-H5002the Lordיְהוָ֗הYah.wehH3068, ‘and I will bringוַהֲשִׁ֨בֹתִ֜יםva.ha.Shi.vo.TimH7725them backH7725to thisH2088cityהָעִ֤ירha.'IrH5892,and they will fightוְנִלְחֲמ֣וּve.nil.cha.MuH3898againstעָלֶ֔יהָ'a.Lei.haH5921it andtakeוּלְכָד֖וּהָu.le.kha.Du.haH3920it and burnוּשְׂרָפֻ֣הָu.se.ra.Fu.haH8313it with fireבָאֵ֑שׁva.'EshH784;and I will makeאֶתֵּ֥ן'e.TenH5414the citiesעָרֵ֧י'a.ReiH5892of Judahיְהוּדָ֛הye.hu.DahH3063adesolationשְׁמָמָ֖הshe.ma.MahH8077withoutמֵאֵ֥יןme.'EinH369inhabitantיֹשֵֽׁב׃ פyo.ShevH3427.’”
