The Ten Commandments

2“I am the Lordיְהוָ֣הYah.wehH3068your Godאֱלֹהֶ֑֔יךָ'e.lo.Hei.khaH430,whoאֲשֶׁ֧ר'a.SherH834broughtH3318you outH3318of the landמֵאֶ֥רֶץme.'E.retzH776of Egyptמִצְרַ֖יִםmitz.Ra.yimH4714,out of the houseמִבֵּ֣֥יתmi.BeitH1004ofslaveryעֲבָדִיֽ֑ם׃'a.va.DimH5650.

3“You shall haveיִהְיֶֽה־yih.yeh-H1961noלֹֽ֣אlo'H3808otherאֲחֵרִ֖֜ים'a.che.RimH312godsאֱלֹהִ֥֨ים'E.lo.HimH430beforeעַל־ פָּנָֽ֗יַ׃'al- pa.Na.iH5921 H6440Me.

4“You shall not makeתַֽעֲשֶׂ֨ה־ta.'a.Seh-H6213for yourselfan idolפֶ֣֙סֶל֙׀fe.selH6459,or anyוְכָל־ve.kholH3605likenessתְּמוּנָ֡֔הte.mu.NahH8544of whatH834is in heavenבַּשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙׀ba.sha.Ma.yimH8064aboveמִמַּ֡֔עַלmi.Ma.'alH4480 H4605or on the earthבָּאָ֖֨רֶץba.'A.retzH776beneathמִתַָּ֑֜חַתmi.Ta.chatH8478,or in the waterבַּמַּ֖֣יִם׀ba.Ma.yimH4325underמִתַּ֥֣חַתmi.Ta.chatH8478the earthלָאָֽ֗רֶץ׃la.'A.retzH776.

5You shall not worshipH2331them nor serveתָעָבְדֵ֑ם֒ta.'a.ve.DemH5647them; for I, the Lordיְהוָ֤הYah.wehH3068your Godאֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙'e.lo.Hei.khaH430, am ajealousקַנָּ֔אka.Na'H7067Godאֵ֣ל'elH410,inflictingפֹּ֠קֵדPo.kedH6485thepunishmentעֲוֹ֨ן'a.VonH5771of the fathersאָבֹ֧ת'a.VotH1on the childrenבָּנִ֛יםba.NimH1121,on the thirdשִׁלֵּשִׁ֥יםshi.le.ShimH8029and the fourthרִבֵּעִ֖יםri.be.'ImH7256generations of those who hateלְשֹׂנְאָֽ֑י׃le.so.ne.'AiH8130Me,

6but showingוְעֹ֥֤שֶׂהve.'O.sehH6213favorחֶ֖֙סֶד֙che.sedH2617tothousandsלַאֲלָפִ֑֔יםla.'a.la.FimH505,to those who loveלְאֹהֲבַ֖יle.'o.ha.VaiH157Me and keepוּלְשֹׁמְרֵ֥יu.le.sho.me.ReiH8104My commandmentsמִצְוֹתָֽי׃ סmitz.vo.TaiH4687.

7“You shall not takeתִשָּׂ֛אti.Sa'H5375the nameשֵֽׁם־shem-H8034of the Lordיְהוָ֥הYah.wehH3068your Godאֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ'e.lo.Hei.khaH430in vainלַשָּׁ֑וְאla.Shav'H7723,for the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068will notleaveיְנַקֶּה֙ye.na.KehH5352him unpunishedH5352whoאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834takesיִשָּׂ֥אyi.Sa'H5375His nameשְׁמ֖וֹshe.MoH8034in vainלַשָּֽׁוְא׃ פla.Shav'H7723.

8“Rememberזָכ֛וֹר֩za.KhorH2142the Sabbathהַשַּׁבָּ֖֜תha.sha.BatH7676dayי֥֨וֹםYomH3117,to keepH6942it holyלְקַדְּשֽׁ֗וֹ׃le.ka.de.ShoH6942.

9For sixשֵׁ֤֣שֶׁתShe.shetH8337daysיָמִ֣ים֙ya.MimH3117you shall laborתַּֽעֲבֹ֔ד֮ta.'a.VodH5647and doוְעָשִׂ֖֣יתָve.'a.Si.taH6213allכָּל־kol-H3605your workמְלַאכְתֶּֽךָ֒׃me.lakh.te.KhaH4399,

10but the seventhהַשְּׁבִיעִ֔֜יha.she.vi.'IH7637dayוְי֙וֹם֙ve.YomH3117is a Sabbathשַׁבָּ֖֣ת׀sha.BatH7676of the Lordלַיהוָ֣הla.Yah.wehH3068your Godאֱלֹהֶ֑֗יךָ'e.lo.Hei.khaH430; on ityou shall not doתַעֲשֶׂ֣֨הta.'a.SehH6213anyכָל־khol-H3605workמְלָאכָ֡֜הme.la.KhahH4399,you, or your sonוּבִנְךָֽ֣־u.vin.kha-H1121,or your daughterוּ֠בִתֶּ֗ךָu.vi.Te.khaH1323,your maleעַבְדְּךָ֤֨'av.de.KhaH5650slaveH5650or your femaleוַאֲמָֽתְךָ֜֙va.'a.ma.te.KhaH519slaveH519,or your cattleוּבְהֶמְתֶּ֔֗ךָu.ve.hem.Te.khaH929, or yourresidentוְגֵרְךָ֖֙ve.ge.re.KhaH1616whoאֲשֶׁ֥֣ר'a.SherH834stays with you.

11For in sixשֵֽׁשֶׁת־she.shet-H8337daysיָמִים֩ya.MimH3117the Lordיְהוָ֜הYah.wehH3068madeעָשָׂ֨ה'a.SahH6213the heavensהַשָּׁמַ֣יִםha.sha.Ma.yimH8064and the earthהָאָ֗רֶץha.'A.retzH776,the seaהַיָּם֙hai.YamH3220and everythingכָּל־kol-H3605that is in them, and He restedוַיָּ֖נַחvai.Ya.nachH5117on the seventhהַשְּׁבִיעִ֑יha.she.vi.'IH7637dayבַּיּ֣וֹםbai.YomH3117;for thatH3651reasonH3651the Lordיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068blessedבֵּרַ֧ךְbe.RakhH1288the Sabbathהַשַּׁבָּ֖תha.sha.BatH7676dayי֥וֹםYomH3117and madeH6942it holyוַֽיְקַדְּשֵֽׁהוּ׃ סVay.ka.de.She.huH6942.

12“Honorכַּבֵּ֥דka.BedH3513your fatherאָבִ֖יךָ'a.Vi.khaH1and your motherאִמֶּ֑ךָ'i.Me.khaH517,soלְמַ֙עַן֙le.Ma.'anH4616thatH4616yourdaysיָמֶ֔יךָya.Mei.khaH3117may be prolongedיַאֲרִכ֣וּןya.'a.ri.KhunH748on the landהָאֲדָמָ֔הha.'a.da.MahH127whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834the Lordיְהוָ֥הYah.wehH3068your Godאֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ'e.lo.Hei.khaH430givesנֹתֵ֥ןno.TenH5414you.

13“You shall not murderתִּֿרְצָֽ֖ח׃ סtre.TzachH7523.

14“You shall not commitתִּֿנְאָֽ֑ף׃ סtne.'AfH5003adulteryH5003.

15“You shall not stealתִּֿגְנֹֽ֔ב׃ סtge.NoH1589.

16“You shall notgiveתַעֲנֶ֥הta.'a.NehH6030falseשָֽׁקֶר׃ סSha.kerH8267testimonyעֵ֥ד'edH5707against yourneighborבְרֵעֲךָ֖ve.re.'a.KhaH7453.

17“You shall not covetתַחְמֹ֖דtach.ModH2530your neighbor’sרֵעֶ֑ךָre.'E.khaH7453houseבֵּ֣יתbeitH1004;you shall not covetתַחְמֹ֞דtach.ModH2530your neighbor’sרֵעֶ֗ךָre.'E.khaH7453wifeאֵ֣שֶׁת'E.shetH802,or his maleוְעַבְדּ֤וֹve.'av.DoH5650slaveH5650,or his femaleוַאֲמָתוֹ֙va.'a.ma.ToH519slaveH519,or his oxוְשׁוֹר֣וֹve.sho.RoH7794,or his donkeyוַחֲמֹר֔וֹva.cha.mo.RoH2543,or anythingוְכֹ֖לve.KholH3605that belongs to your neighborלְרֵעֶֽךָ׃ פle.re.'E.khaH7453.”

18Andallוְכָל־ve.kholH3605the peopleהָעָם֩ha.'AmH5971were watchingרֹאִ֨יםro.'ImH7200and hearing thethunderהַקּוֹלֹ֜תha.ko.LotH6963and the lightningH3940flashesH3940,and the soundק֣וֹלKolH6963of the trumpetהַשֹּׁפָ֔רha.sho.FarH7782,and the mountainהָהָ֖רha.HarH2022smokingעָשֵׁ֑ן'a.ShenH6226;and when the peopleהָעָם֙ha.'AmH5971sawוַיַּ֤רְאvai.Yar'H7200it all,they trembledוַיָּנֻ֔עוּvai.ya.Nu.'uH5128and stoodוַיַּֽעַמְד֖וּvai.ya.'am.DuH5975at a distanceמֵֽרָחֹֽק׃Me.ra.ChokH7350.

19Then they saidוַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙vai.yo.me.RuH559to Mosesמֹשֶׁ֔הmo.ShehH4872, “Speakדַּבֵּר־da.ber-H1696to us yourselfאַתָּ֥ה'a.TahH859and we will listenוְנִשְׁמָ֑עָהve.nish.Ma.'ahH8085;but do not have Godאֱלֹהִ֖ים'E.lo.HimH430speakיְדַבֵּ֥רye.da.BerH1696to us, orפֶּן־pen-H6435we will dieנָמֽוּת׃na.MutH4191!”

20However, Mosesמֹשֶׁ֣הmo.ShehH4872saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to the peopleהָעָם֮ha.'AmH5971, “Do not beH3372afraidתִּירָאוּ֒ti.ra.'UH3372;for Godהָאֱלֹהִ֑יםha.'E.lo.HimH430has comeבָּ֖אba'H935in orderלְבַֽעֲבוּר֙le.va.'a.VurH5668to testנַסּ֣וֹתna.SotH5254you, and in orderוּבַעֲב֗וּרu.va.'a.VurH5668thatthe fearיִרְאָת֛וֹyir.'a.ToH3374of Him mayremainתִּהְיֶ֧ה פְּנֵיכֶ֖םtih.Yeh pe.nei.KhemH1961 H6440with you, so that you will not sinתֶחֱטָֽאוּ׃te.che.Ta.'uH2398.”

21So the peopleהָעָ֖םha.'AmH5971stoodוַיַּעֲמֹ֥דvai.ya.'a.ModH5975at a distanceמֵרָחֹ֑קme.ra.ChokH7350,while Mosesוּמֹשֶׁה֙u.mo.ShehH4872approachedנִגַּ֣שׁni.GashH5066the thickהָֽעֲרָפֶ֔לha.'a.ra.FelH6205darknessH6205whereאֲשֶׁר־ שָׁ֖ם'a.Sher- shamH834 H8033Godהָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ פha.'E.lo.HimH430was.

22Then the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Mosesמֹשֶׁ֔הmo.ShehH4872, “ThisH3541isH3541whatH3541you shall sayתֹאמַ֖רto.MarH559to the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478: ‘You yourselvesH864have seenרְאִיתֶ֔םre.'i.TemH7200thatI have spokenדִּבַּ֖רְתִּיdi.Bar.tiH1696to you from heavenהַשָּׁמַ֔יִםha.sha.Ma.yimH8064.

23You shall not makeתַעֲשׂ֖וּןta.'a.SunH6213other godsbesidesאִתִּ֑י'i.TiH854Me;godsאֱלֹ֤הֵי'e.Lo.heiH430of silverכֶ֙סֶף֙khe.sefH3701or godsוֵאלֹהֵ֣יve.lo.HeiH430of goldזָהָ֔בza.HavH2091,you shall not makeתַעֲשׂ֖וּta.'a.SuH6213for yourselvesH864.

24You shall makeתַּעֲשֶׂה־ta.'a.seh-H6213an altarמִזְבַּ֣חmiz.BachH4196of earthאֲדָמָה֮'a.da.MahH127for Me, and you shall sacrificeוְזָבַחְתָּ֣ve.za.vach.TaH2076on it yourburntעֹלֹתֶ֙יךָ֙'o.lo.Tei.khaH5930offeringsH5930and yourpeaceשְׁלָמֶ֔יךָshe.la.Mei.khaH8002offeringsH8002,your sheepצֹֽאנְךָ֖tzo.ne.KhaH6629and your oxenבְּקָרֶ֑ךָbe.ka.Re.chaH1241;in everyבְּכָל־be.kholH3605placeהַמָּקוֹם֙ha.ma.kOmH4725whereאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834I cause My nameשְׁמִ֔יshe.MiH8034to be rememberedאַזְכִּ֣יר'az.KirH2142,I will comeאָב֥וֹא'a.Vo'H935to you and blessוּבֵרַכְתִּֽיךָ׃u.ve.rakh.Ti.khaH1288you.

25And ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518you makeתַּֽעֲשֶׂה־ta.'a.seh-H6213an altarמִזְבַּ֤חmiz.BachH4196of stoneאֲבָנִים֙'a.va.NimH68for Me,you shall not buildתִבְנֶ֥הtiv.NehH1129it of cutH1496stonesגָּזִ֑יתga.ZitH1496,for if you wieldהֵנַ֥פְתָּhe.Naf.taH5130your chiselחַרְבְּךָ֛char.be.KhaH2719on it, you will profaneוַתְּחַֽלְלֶֽהָ׃va.te.Cha.Le.haH2490it.

26And you shall not goתַעֲלֶ֥הta.'a.LehH5927upH5927by stepsבְמַעֲלֹ֖תve.ma.'a.LotH4609to My altarמִזְבְּחִ֑יmiz.be.ChiH4196,soH834thatH834your nakednessעֶרְוָתְךָ֖'er.va.te.KhaH6172will not be exposedתִגָּלֶ֥הti.ga.LehH1540on it.’
