Exodus 16
New American Standard Bible 1995
The Lord Provides Manna
1Then they setH5265 out from ElimH362, and allH3605 the congregationH5712 of the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 cameH935 to the wildernessH4057 of 1SinH5512, whichH834 is betweenH996 ElimH362 and SinaiH5514, on 2the fifteenthH2568H6240 dayH3117 of the secondH8145 monthH2320 after their departureH3318 from the landH776 of EgyptH4714. 2The wholeH3605 congregationH5712 of the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 3grumbledH3885 againstH5921 MosesH4872 and AaronH175 in the wildernessH4057. 3The sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 saidH559 to them, “4WouldH4310H5414 that we had diedH4191 by the Lord’sH3068 handH3027 in the landH776 of EgyptH4714, 5when we satH3427 by the potsH5518 of 6meatH1320, when we ateH398 breadH3899 to the fullH7648; for you have broughtH3318 us out into thisH2088 wildernessH4057 to killH4191 thisH2088 wholeH3605 assemblyH6951 with hungerH7458.”
4Then the LordH3068 saidH559 to MosesH4872, “BeholdH2009, 7I will rainH4305 breadH3899 from heavenH8064 for you; and the peopleH5971 shall goH3318 out and gatherH3950 a day’sH3117 portionH1697 every dayH3117, that I may 8testH5254 them, whether orH518 not they will walkH1980 in My 9instructionH8451. 510On the sixthH8345 dayH3117, when they prepareH3559 whatH834 they bringH935 in, it will be twiceH4932 as muchH834 as they gatherH3950 dailyH3117.” 6So MosesH4872 and AaronH175 saidH559 to allH3605 the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478, “At eveningH6153 1112you will knowH3045 that the LordH3068 has broughtH3318 you out of the landH776 of EgyptH4714; 7and in the morningH1242 13you will seeH7200 14the gloryH3519 of the LordH3068, for 15He hearsH8085 your grumblingsH8519 againstH5921 the LordH3068; and 16whatH4100 are we, that you grumbleH3885 againstH5921 us?”
The Lord Provides Meat
8MosesH4872 saidH559, “This will happen when the LordH3068 givesH5414 you 17meatH1320 to eatH398 in the eveningH6153, and breadH3899 to the fullH7646 in the morningH1242; for the LordH3068 hearsH8085 your grumblingsH8519 whichH834 you grumbleH3885 againstH5921 Him. And whatH4100 are we? Your grumblingsH8519 are 18not againstH5921 us but againstH5921 the LordH3068.”
9Then MosesH4872 saidH559 to AaronH175, “SayH559 to allH3605 the congregationH5712 of the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478, ‘19ComeH7126 nearH7126 beforeH6440 the LordH3068, for He has heardH8085 your grumblingsH8519.’” 10It cameH1961 about as AaronH175 spokeH1696 to the wholeH3605 congregationH5712 of the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478, that they 20lookedH6437 towardH413 the wildernessH4057, and beholdH2009, 21the gloryH3519 of the LordH3068 appearedH7200 in the cloudH6051. 11And the LordH3068 spokeH1696 to MosesH4872, sayingH559, 12“22I have heardH8085 the grumblingsH8519 of the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478; speakH1696 to them, sayingH559, ‘23At twilightH6153 you shall eatH398 24meatH1320, and in the morningH1242 you shall be filledH7646 with breadH3899; and 25you shall knowH3045 that I am the LordH3068 your GodH430.’”
13So it cameH1961 about at eveningH6153 that 26the quailsH7958 cameH5927 up and coveredH3680 the campH4264, and in the morningH1242 27there was a layerH7902 of dewH2919 aroundH5439 the campH4264. 1428When the layerH7902 of dewH2919 29evaporatedH5927, beholdH2009, on the 30surfaceH6440 of the wildernessH4057 31there was a fineH1851 flake-likeH2636 thingH2636, fineH1851 as the frostH3713 on the groundH776. 15When the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 sawH7200 it, they saidH559 to oneH376 anotherH251, “32WhatH4478 is it?” For they did not knowH3045 whatH4100 it was. And MosesH4872 saidH559 to them, “33It is the breadH3899 whichH834 the LordH3068 has givenH5414 you to eatH402. 16ThisH2088 is 34whatH1697H834 the LordH3068 has commandedH6680, ‘GatherH3950 of it everyH376 manH376 35as muchH6310 as he should eatH398; you shall takeH3947 3637an omerH6016 apieceH1538 according to the numberH4557 of personsH5315 eachH376 of you hasH3947 in his tentH168.’” 17The sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 didH6213 soH3651, and some gatheredH3950 muchH7235 and some littleH4591. 18When they measuredH4058 it with an omerH6016, 38he who hadH7235 gathered muchH7235 had noH3808 excessH5736, and he who hadH4591 gathered littleH4591 had noH3808 lackH2637; everyH376 manH376 gatheredH3950 39as muchH6310 as he should eatH398. 19MosesH4872 saidH559 to them, “40Let noH408 manH376 leaveH3498 anyH4480 of it untilH5704 morningH1242.” 20But they did not listenH8085 to MosesH4872, and someH376 leftH3498 part of it untilH5704 morningH1242, and it bredH7426 wormsH8438 and becameH887 foulH887; and MosesH4872 was angryH7107 with them. 21They gatheredH3950 it morningH1242 by morningH1242, everyH376 manH376 41as muchH6310 as he should eatH398; but when the sunH8121 grewH2552 hotH2552, it would meltH4549.
The Sabbath Observed
2242Now on the sixthH8345 dayH3117 they gatheredH3950 twiceH4932 as muchH4932 breadH3899, twoH8147 omersH6016 for eachH259 oneH259. When allH3605 the 43leadersH5387 of the congregationH5712 cameH935 and toldH5046 MosesH4872, 23then he saidH559 to them, “ThisH1931 is whatH834 the LordH3068 44meantH1696: 45TomorrowH4279 is a sabbathH7677 observanceH7677, a holyH6944 sabbathH7676 to the LordH3068. BakeH644 whatH834 you will bakeH644 and boilH1310 whatH834 you will boilH1310, and 46allH3605 that is leftH5736 overH5736 47putH5117 asideH5117 to be keptH4931 untilH5704 morningH1242.” 24So they 48putH5117 it asideH5117 untilH5704 morningH1242, as MosesH4872 had orderedH6680, and 49it did not becomeH887 foulH887 norH3808 was there any wormH7415 in it. 25MosesH4872 saidH559, “EatH398 it todayH3117, for todayH3117 is a sabbathH7676 to the LordH3068; todayH3117 you will not findH4672 it in the fieldH7704. 2650SixH8337 daysH3117 you shall gatherH3950 it, but on the seventhH7637 dayH3117, the sabbathH7676, there will be 51noneH3808.”
27It cameH1961 about on the seventhH7637 dayH3117 that someH4480 of the peopleH5971 wentH3318 out to gatherH3950, but they foundH4672 noneH3808. 28Then the LordH3068 saidH559 to MosesH4872, “52HowH575 longH5704 do you refuseH3985 to keepH8104 My commandmentsH4687 and My 53instructionsH8451? 29SeeH7200, 54the LordH3068 has givenH5414 you the sabbathH7676; thereforeH5921H3651 He givesH5414 you breadH3899 for two daysH3117 on the sixthH8345 dayH3117. RemainH3427 everyH376 manH376 in his placeH8478; let noH408 manH376 goH3318 out of his placeH4725 on the seventhH7637 dayH3117.” 30So the peopleH5971 restedH7673 on the seventhH7637 dayH3117.
31The houseH1004 of 55IsraelH3478 namedH7121H8034 it 56mannaH4478, and it was like 57corianderH1407 seedH2233, whiteH3836, and its tasteH2940 was like wafersH6838 with honeyH1706. 32Then MosesH4872 saidH559, “ThisH2088 is 58whatH1697H834 the LordH3068 has commandedH6680, ‘Let an omerfulH4393H6016 of it be keptH4931 throughout your generationsH1755, that they may seeH7200 the breadH3899 that I fedH398 you in the wildernessH4057, when I broughtH3318 you out of the landH776 of EgyptH4714.’” 33MosesH4872 saidH559 to AaronH175, “59TakeH3947 a jarH6803 and putH5414 an omerfulH4393H6016 of mannaH4478 in it, and placeH5117 it beforeH6440 the LordH3068 to be keptH4931 throughout your generationsH1755.” 34As the LordH3068 commandedH6680 MosesH4872, so AaronH175 placedH5117 it beforeH6440 60the TestimonyH5715, to be keptH4931. 3561The sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 ateH398 the mannaH4478 fortyH705 yearsH8141, untilH5704 they cameH935 to an inhabitedH3427 landH776; they ateH398 the mannaH4478 untilH5704 they cameH935 to the borderH7097 of the landH776 of CanaanH3667. 36(Now 62an omerH6016 is a tenthH6224 of an 63ephahH374.)
