The Law of Vows

1Then MosesH4872spokeוַיְדַבֵּ֤רvay.da.BerH1696tothe headsרָאשֵׁ֣יra.SheiH7218of the tribesהַמַּטּ֔וֹתha.ma.TotH4294of the sonsH1121of IsraelH3478,sayingH559, “Thisזֶ֣הzehH2088is the wordהַדָּבָ֔רha.da.VarH1697whichH834the LordH3068has commandedH6680:

2Ifכִּֽי־ki-H3588a manאִישׁ֩'ishH376makesיִדֹּ֨רyi.DorH5087a vowנֶ֜דֶרNe.derH5088to the LordH3068,orאֽוֹ־'ov-H176takesהִשָּׁ֤בַעhi.Sha.va'H7650an oathשְׁבֻעָה֙she.vu.'AhH7621toputH631himselfנַפְשׁ֔וֹnaf.ShoH5315underH631a bindingH632obligationאִסָּר֙'i.SarH632,he shall not breakיַחֵ֖לya.ChelH2490his wordH1697;he shall actיַעֲשֶֽׂה׃ya.'a.SehH6213in accordance with everythingכְּכָל־ke.khol-H3605that comesH3318outH3318of his mouthמִפִּ֖יוmi.PivH6310.

3“And ifH3588a womanוְאִשָּׁ֕הve.'i.ShahH802makesH5087a vowH5088to the LordH3068,and putsוְאָסְרָ֥הve.'a.se.RahH631herself underלֶאְסֹ֤רle'.SorH631a bindingאִסָּ֛ר'i.SarH632obligationאִסָּר֙'i.SarH632in her father’sאָבִ֖יהָ'a.Vi.haH1houseבְּבֵ֥יתbe.VeitH1004in her youthבִּנְעֻרֶֽיהָ׃bin.'u.Rei.haH5271,

4and her fatherH1hearsוְשָׁמַ֨עve.sha.Ma'H8085her vowH5088and her obligationוֶֽאֱסָרָהּ֙ve.'e.sa.RahH632underH631whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834she has putH631herselfנַפְשָׁ֔הּnaf.ShahH5315,and her fatherH1saysH2790nothingH2790to her, then allכָּל־kol-H3605her vowsH5088shallremainH6965validH6965and everyוְכָל־ve.kholH3605bindingאִסָּ֛ר'i.SarH632obligationאִסָּ֛ר'i.SarH632underH631whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834she has putH631herselfנַפְשָׁ֖הּnaf.ShahH5315shallremainH6965validH6965.

5But ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518her fatherH1expressesH5106disapprovalH5106to her on the dayבְּי֣וֹםbe.YomH3117he hearsH8085of it,noneלֹ֣אlo'H3605 H3808of her vowsH5088or her obligationsH632underH631whichH834she has putH631herselfH5315shall remainH6965validH6965;and the Lordוַֽיהוָה֙va.Yah.wehH3068willforgiveיִֽסְלַח־yis.lach-H5545her becauseכִּי־ki-H3588her fatherH1has expressedH5106disapprovalH5106to her.

6“However, ifH518she happensהָי֤וֹha.YoH1961tomarryתִֽהְיֶה֙ לְאִ֔ישׁtih.Yeh le.'IshH1961 H376whileunderH5921her vowsH5088orא֚וֹ'oH176the impulsiveH4008statementH4008of her lipsשְׂפָתֶ֔יהָse.fa.Tei.haH8193by whichH834she has obligatedH631herselfH5315,

7and her husbandH376hearsוְשָׁמַ֥עve.sha.Ma'H8085of it and saysH2790nothingH2790to her on the dayבְּי֥וֹםbe.YomH3117he hearsשָׁמְע֖וֹsha.me.'OH8085it,then her vowsH5088shall remainH6965validH6965and her bindingH632obligationsוֶֽאֱסָרֶ֛הָve.'e.sa.Re.haH632underאָסְרָ֖ה'a.se.RahH631whichH834she has putאָסְרָ֥ה'a.se.RahH631herselfH5315shall remainH6965validH6965.

8But ifוְ֠אִםVe.'imH518on the dayH3117her husbandH376hearsH8085of it,he expressesH5106disapprovalH5106to her, then he will annulוְהֵפֵ֗רve.he.FerH6565her vowH5088whichH834she is underH5921and the impulsiveH4008statementH4008of her lipsשְׂפָתֶ֔יהָse.fa.Tei.haH8193by whichH834she has obligatedH631herselfH5315;and the Lordוַיהוָ֖הva.Yah.wehH3068willforgiveיִֽסְלַֽח־yis.lach-H5545her.

9“But as forthe vowH5088of a widowאַלְמָנָ֖ה'al.ma.NahH490or of a divorcedוּגְרוּשָׁ֑הu.ge.ru.ShahH1644woman, everyכֹּ֛לkolH3605bindingH631obligationH631underH631whichH834she has putH631herselfH5315,shall remainH6965validH6965againstH5921her.

10However, ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518a married womanvowedנָדָ֑רָהna.Da.rahH5087inher husband’sאִישָׁ֖הּ'i.ShahH376houseבֵּ֥יתbeitH1004,orאֽוֹ־'ov-H176putאָסְרָ֥ה'a.se.RahH631herselfH5315underאָסְרָ֥ה'a.se.RahH631a bindingH632obligationאִסָּ֛ר'i.SarH632with an oathבִּשְׁבֻעָֽה׃bish.vu.'AhH7621,

11and her husbandH376heardוְשָׁמַ֤עve.sha.Ma'H8085it,but saidH2790nothingH2790to her anddid not expressH5106disapprovalH5106to her, then allכָּל־kol-H3605her vowsנְדָרֶ֔יהָne.da.Rei.haH5088shall remainH6965validH6965and everyוְכָל־ve.kholH3605bindingאִסָּ֛ר'i.SarH632obligationאִסָּ֛ר'i.SarH632underאָסְרָ֥ה'a.se.RahH631whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834she putאָסְרָ֥ה'a.se.RahH631herselfH5315shall remainH6965validH6965.

12But ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518her husbandH376actuallyהָפֵר֩ha.FerH6565annulsיָפֵ֨רya.FerH6565them on the dayבְּי֣וֹםbe.YomH3117he hearsH8085them,then noH3808 H3605utteranceמוֹצָ֨אmo.Tza'H4161from her lipsשְׂפָתֶ֧יהָse.fa.Tei.haH8193concerning her vowsH5088or the obligationH632she put onherselfH5315shall remainH6965validH6965;her husbandH376has annulledהֲפֵרָ֔םha.fe.RamH6565them, and the Lordוַיהוָ֖הva.Yah.wehH3068willforgiveיִֽסְלַֽח־yis.lach-H5545her.

13“EveryH3605vowH5088and everyH3605bindingH632oathשְׁבֻעַ֥תshe.vu.'AtH7621to humbleלְעַנֹּ֣תle.'a.NotH6031herselfH5315,her husbandH376may confirmH6965it or her husbandH376may annulH6565it.

14But ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518her husbandH376inH2790factH2790saysH2790nothingH2790to her from dayמִיּ֣וֹםmi.YomH3117to dayיוֹם֒yOmH3117,then he confirmsH6965allH3605her vowsH5088orא֥וֹ'oH176allH3605her bindingאִסָּ֖ר'i.SarH632obligationsאֱסָרֶ֖יהָ'e.sa.Rei.haH632whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834are on her; he has confirmedH6965them, becauseכִּי־ki-H3588he saidH2790nothingH2790to her on the dayבְּי֥וֹםbe.YomH3117he heardשָׁמְעֽוֹ׃sha.me.'OH8085them.

15However, ifH518he actuallyהָפֵ֥רha.FerH6565annulsיָפֵ֛רya.FerH6565themafterאַחֲרֵ֣י'a.cha.ReiH310he has heardH8085them, then he shall bearוְנָשָׂ֖אve.na.Sa'H5375the responsibility forher guiltעֲוֹנָֽהּ׃'a.vo.NahH5771.”

16Theseאֵ֣לֶּה'E.lehH428are the statutesהַֽחֻקִּ֗יםha.chu.KimH2706whichאֲשֶׁ֨ר'a.SherH834the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068commandedצִוָּ֤הtzi.VahH6680Mosesמֹשֶׁ֔הmo.ShehH4872concerning mattersbetweenבֵּ֥יןbeinH996a manאִ֖ישׁ'ishH376and his wifeלְאִשְׁתּ֑וֹle.'ish.ToH802, andbetweenבֵּֽין־bein-H996a fatherאָ֣ב'avH1and his daughterלְבִתּ֔וֹle.vi.ToH1323while she isin her youthבִּנְעֻרֶ֖יהָbin.'u.Rei.haH5271inher father’sאָבִֽיהָ׃ פ'a.Vi.haH1houseבֵּ֥יתbeitH1004.
