The Law of Vows

1Then MosesH4872spokeוַיְדַבֵּ֤רvay.da.BerH1696tothe headsרָאשֵׁ֣יra.SheiH7218of the tribesהַמַּטּ֔וֹתha.ma.TotH4294of the sonsH1121of IsraelH3478,sayingH559, “Thisזֶ֣הzehH2088is the wordהַדָּבָ֔רha.da.VarH1697whichH834the LordH3068has commandedH6680.

2Ifכִּֽי־ki-H3588a manאִישׁ֩'ishH376makesיִדֹּ֨רyi.DorH5087a vowנֶ֜דֶרNe.derH5088to the LordH3068,orאֽוֹ־'ov-H176takesהִשָּׁ֤בַעhi.Sha.va'H7650an oathשְׁבֻעָה֙she.vu.'AhH7621to bindלֶאְסֹ֤רle'.SorH631himselfנַפְשׁ֔וֹnaf.ShoH5315with a bindingH632obligationאִסָּר֙'i.SarH632,he shall not violateיַחֵ֖לya.ChelH2490his wordH1697;he shall doיַעֲשֶֽׂה׃ya.'a.SehH6213according to allכְּכָל־ke.khol-H3605that proceedsהַיֹּצֵ֥אhai.yo.Tze'H3318out of his mouthמִפִּ֖יוmi.PivH6310.

3“Also ifH3588a womanוְאִשָּׁ֕הve.'i.ShahH802makesH5087a vowH5088to the LordH3068,and bindsH631herself by an obligationH632in her father’sאָבִ֖יהָ'a.Vi.haH1houseבְּבֵ֥יתbe.VeitH1004in her youthבִּנְעֻרֶֽיהָ׃bin.'u.Rei.haH5271,

4and her fatherH1hearsוְשָׁמַ֨עve.sha.Ma'H8085her vowH5088and her obligationH632by whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834she has boundH631herselfנַפְשָׁ֔הּnaf.ShahH5315,and her fatherH1saysH2790nothingH2790to her, then allכָּל־kol-H3605her vowsH5088shall standוְקָ֙מוּ֙ve.Ka.muH6965and everyוְכָל־ve.kholH3605obligationH632by whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834she has boundH631herselfנַפְשָׁ֖הּnaf.ShahH5315shall standיָקֽוּם׃ya.KumH6965.

5But ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518her fatherH1should forbidהֵנִ֨יאhe.Ni'H5106her on the dayבְּי֣וֹםbe.YomH3117he hearsH8085of it,noneלֹ֣אlo'H3605 H3808of her vowsH5088or her obligationsH632by whichH834she has boundH631herselfH5315shall standH6965;and the Lordוַֽיהוָה֙va.Yah.wehH3068will forgiveיִֽסְלַח־yis.lach-H5545her becauseכִּי־ki-H3588her fatherH1had forbiddenהֵנִ֥יאhe.Ni'H5106her.

6“However, ifH518she shouldmarryלְאִ֔ישׁle.'IshH1961 H376whileunderH5921her vowsH5088orא֚וֹ'oH176the rashמִבְטָ֣אmiv.Ta'H4008statementH4008of her lipsשְׂפָתֶ֔יהָse.fa.Tei.haH8193by whichH834she has boundH631herselfH5315,

7and her husbandH376hearsוְשָׁמַ֥עve.sha.Ma'H8085of it and saysH2790nothingH2790to her on the dayבְּי֥וֹםbe.YomH3117he hearsשָׁמְע֖וֹsha.me.'OH8085it,then her vowsH5088shall standוְקָ֣מוּve.Ka.muH6965and her obligationsוֶֽאֱסָרֶ֛הָve.'e.sa.Re.haH632by whichH834she has boundH631herselfH5315shall standיָקֻֽמוּ׃ya.Ku.muH6965.

8But ifוְ֠אִםVe.'imH518on the dayH3117her husbandH376hearsH8085of it,he forbidsיָנִ֣יאya.Ni'H5106her, then he shall annulוְהֵפֵ֗רve.he.FerH6565her vowH5088whichH834she is underH5921and the rashמִבְטָ֣אmiv.Ta'H4008statementH4008of her lipsשְׂפָתֶ֔יהָse.fa.Tei.haH8193by whichH834she has boundH631herselfH5315;and the Lordוַיהוָ֖הva.Yah.wehH3068will forgiveיִֽסְלַֽח־yis.lach-H5545her.

9“But the vowH5088of a widowאַלְמָנָ֖ה'al.ma.NahH490or of a divorcedוּגְרוּשָׁ֑הu.ge.ru.ShahH1644woman, everythingכֹּ֛לkolH3605by whichH834she has boundH631herselfH5315,shall standיָק֥וּםya.KumH6965againstH5921her.

10However, ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518she vowedנָדָ֑רָהna.Da.rahH5087in her husband’sאִישָׁ֖הּ'i.ShahH376houseבֵּ֥יתbeitH1004,orאֽוֹ־'ov-H176boundH631herselfH5315by an obligationאִסָּ֛ר'i.SarH632with an oathבִּשְׁבֻעָֽה׃bish.vu.'AhH7621,

11and her husbandH376heardוְשָׁמַ֤עve.sha.Ma'H8085it,but saidH2790nothingH2790to her anddid not forbidהֵנִ֖יאhe.Ni'H5106her, then allכָּל־kol-H3605her vowsנְדָרֶ֔יהָne.da.Rei.haH5088shall standוְקָ֙מוּ֙ve.Ka.muH6965and everyוְכָל־ve.kholH3605obligationH632by whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834she boundH631herselfH5315shall standיָקֽוּם׃ya.KumH6965.

12But ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518her husbandH376indeedהָפֵר֩ha.FerH6565annulsיָפֵ֨רya.FerH6565them on the dayבְּי֣וֹםbe.YomH3117he hearsH8085them,then whateverH3605proceedsמוֹצָ֨אmo.Tza'H4161out of her lipsשְׂפָתֶ֧יהָse.fa.Tei.haH8193concerning her vowsH5088or concerning the obligationH632of herselfH5315shall not standH6965;her husbandH376has annulledהֲפֵרָ֔םha.fe.RamH6565them, and the Lordוַיהוָ֖הva.Yah.wehH3068will forgiveיִֽסְלַֽח־yis.lach-H5545her.

13“EveryH3605vowH5088and everyH3605bindingH632oathשְׁבֻעַ֥תshe.vu.'AtH7621to humbleלְעַנֹּ֣תle.'a.NotH6031herselfH5315,her husbandH376may confirmH6965it or her husbandH376may annulH6565it.

14But ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518her husbandH376indeedH2790saysH2790nothingH2790to her from dayמִיּ֣וֹםmi.YomH3117to dayיוֹם֒yOmH3117,then he confirmsH6965allH3605her vowsH5088orא֥וֹ'oH176allH3605her obligationsH632whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834are on her; he has confirmedH6965them, becauseכִּי־ki-H3588he saidH2790nothingH2790to her on the dayבְּי֥וֹםbe.YomH3117he heardשָׁמְעֽוֹ׃sha.me.'OH8085them.

15But ifH518he indeedהָפֵ֥רha.FerH6565annulsיָפֵ֛רya.FerH6565them afterאַחֲרֵ֣י'a.cha.ReiH310he has heardH8085them, then he shall bearוְנָשָׂ֖אve.na.Sa'H5375her guiltעֲוֹנָֽהּ׃'a.vo.NahH5771.”

16Theseאֵ֣לֶּה'E.lehH428are the statutesהַֽחֻקִּ֗יםha.chu.KimH2706whichאֲשֶׁ֨ר'a.SherH834the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068commandedצִוָּ֤הtzi.VahH6680Mosesמֹשֶׁ֔הmo.ShehH4872, asbetweenבֵּ֥יןbeinH996a manאִ֖ישׁ'ishH376and his wifeלְאִשְׁתּ֑וֹle.'ish.ToH802, and asbetweenבֵּֽין־bein-H996a fatherאָ֣ב'avH1and his daughterלְבִתּ֔וֹle.vi.ToH1323, while she isin her youthבִּנְעֻרֶ֖יהָbin.'u.Rei.haH5271in her father’sאָבִֽיהָ׃ פ'a.Vi.haH1houseבֵּ֥יתbeitH1004.
