1While Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478remainedוַיֵּ֥שֶׁבvai.Ye.shevH3427atShittimבַּשִּׁטִּ֑יםba.shi.TimH7851,the peopleהָעָ֔םha.'AmH5971beganוַיָּ֣חֶלvai.Ya.chelH2490to commitH2181infidelityH2181with the daughtersבְּנ֥וֹתbe.NotH1323of Moabמוֹאָֽב׃mo.'AvH4124.

2Forthey invitedוַתִּקְרֶ֣אןָva.tik.Re.naH7121the peopleלָעָ֔םla.'AmH5971to the sacrificesלְזִבְחֵ֖יle.ziv.CheiH2077of their godsאֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ן'e.lo.hei.HenH430,and the peopleהָעָ֔םha.'AmH5971ateוַיֹּ֣אכַלvai.Yo.khalH398and bowedH2331downH2331to their godsלֵֽאלֹהֵיהֶֽן׃Le.lo.hei.HenH430.

3SoIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478becameH6775followersH6775ofBaalלְבַ֣עַלle.Va.'alH1187ofH1187Peorפְּע֑וֹרpe.'orH1187,and the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068wasH2734angryאַ֥ף'afH639 H2734with Israelבְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃be.Yis.ra.'ElH3478.

4And the Lordיְהוָ֜הYah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Mosesמֹשֶׁ֗הmo.ShehH4872, “Takeקַ֚חkachH3947allכָּל־kol-H3605the leadersרָאשֵׁ֣יra.SheiH7218of the peopleהָעָ֔םha.'AmH5971andexecuteוְהוֹקַ֥עve.ho.Ka'H3363themin broadנֶ֣גֶדNe.gedH5048daylightהַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁha.Sha.meshH8121before the Lordלַיהוָ֖הla.Yah.wehH3068,so that the fierceחֲר֥וֹןcha.RonH2740angerאַף־'af-H639of the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068may turnוְיָשֹׁ֛בve.ya.ShoH7725awayH7725from Israelמִיִּשְׂרָאֵֽל׃mi.Yis.ra.'ElH3478.”

5So Mosesמֹשֶׁ֔הmo.ShehH4872saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to the judgesשֹׁפְטֵ֖יsho.fe.TeiH8199of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478, “EachH376of youkillהִרְגוּ֙hir.GuH2026his menH376who havebecomeH6775followersH6775ofBaalלְבַ֥עַלle.Va.'alH1187ofH1187Peorפְּעֽוֹר׃pe.'orH1187.”

6Then beholdוְהִנֵּ֡הve.hi.NehH2009,oneאִישׁ֩'ishH376of the sonsמִבְּנֵ֨יmi.be.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֜לYis.ra.'ElH3478cameבָּ֗אBa'H935and broughtוַיַּקְרֵ֤בvai.yak.RevH7126to his relativesאֶחָיו֙'e.ChavH251aMidianiteהַמִּדְיָנִ֔יתha.mid.ya.NitH4084womanH4084,in the sightלְעֵינֵ֣יle.'ei.NeiH5869of Mosesמֹשֶׁ֔הmo.ShehH4872and in the sightוּלְעֵינֵ֖יu.le.'ei.NeiH5869of the wholeכָּל־kol-H3605congregationעֲדַ֣ת'a.DatH5712of the sonsבְּנֵי־be.nei-H1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478,while they were weepingבֹכִ֔יםvo.KhimH1058at the entranceפֶּ֖תַחPe.tachH6607of the tentאֹ֥הֶל'O.helH168of meetingמוֹעֵֽד׃mo.'EdH4150.

7When Phinehasפִּֽינְחָס֙pi.ne.ChasH6372the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Eleazarאֶלְעָזָ֔ר'el.'a.ZarH499,the sonבֶּֽן־ben-H1121of Aaronאַהֲרֹ֖ן'a.ha.RonH175the priestהַכֹּהֵ֑ןha.ko.HenH3548,sawוַיַּ֗רְאvai.Yar'H7200it, he roseH6965upH6965from the midstמִתּ֣וֹךְmi.TokhH8432of the congregationהָֽעֵדָ֔הha.'e.DahH5712and tookוַיִּקַּ֥חvai.yi.KachH3947a spearרֹ֖מַחRo.machH7420in his handבְּיָדֽוֹ׃be.ya.DoH3027,

8and he wentוַ֠יָּבֹאVai.ya.vo'H935afterאַחַ֨ר'a.CharH310the manאִֽישׁ־'ish-H376of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֜לYis.ra.'ElH3478into the innerH6898roomH6898ofH6898theH6898tentH6898and piercedוַיִּדְקֹר֙vai.yid.KorH1856bothשְׁנֵיהֶ֔םshe.nei.HemH8147of them, the manאִ֣ישׁ'ishH376of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478and the womanהָאִשָּׁ֖הha.'i.ShahH802,throughH413the abdomenH6896.So the plagueהַמַּגֵּפָ֔הha.ma.ge.FahH4046on the sonsבְּנֵ֥יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃Yis.ra.'ElH3478was broughtH6113toH6113aH6113haltH6113.

9But those who diedהַמֵּתִ֖יםha.me.TimH4191from the plagueבַּמַּגֵּפָ֑הba.ma.ge.FahH4046were twenty-fourאַרְבָּעָ֥ה וְעֶשְׂרִ֖ים'ar.ba.'Ah ve.'es.RimH6242 H702thousandאָֽלֶף׃ פ'A.lefH505in number.

10Then the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068spokeוַיְדַבֵּ֥רvay.da.BerH1696to Mosesמֹשֶׁ֥הmo.ShehH4872,sayingלֵּאמֹֽר׃le.MorH559,

11“Phinehasפִּֽינְחָ֨סpin.ChasH6372the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Eleazarאֶלְעָזָ֜ר'el.'a.ZarH499,the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Aaronאַהֲרֹ֣ן'a.ha.RonH175the priestהַכֹּהֵ֗ןha.ko.HenH3548,has avertedהֵשִׁ֤יבhe.ShivH7725My wrathחֲמָתִי֙cha.ma.TiH2534from the sonsבְּנֵֽי־be.nei-H1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478in that he wasH7065jealousH7065with Myjealousyקִנְאָתִ֖יkin.'a.TiH7068amongבְּתוֹכָ֑םbe.to.KhamH8432them, so that I did not destroyכִלִּ֥יתִיkhi.Li.tiH3615the sonsבְּנֵֽי־be.nei-H1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478in Myjealousyבְּקִנְאָתִֽי׃be.kin.'a.TiH7068.

12Thereforeלָכֵ֖ןla.KhenH3651sayאֱמֹ֑ר'e.MorH559, ‘BeholdH2009,I am givingנֹתֵ֥ןno.TenH5414him Mycovenantבְּרִיתִ֖יbe.ri.TiH1285of peaceשָׁלֽוֹם׃sha.LomH7965;

13and it shall be for him and for hisdescendantsוּלְזַרְע֣וֹu.le.zar.'OH2233afterאַחֲרָ֔יו'a.cha.RavH310him, a covenantבְּרִ֖יתbe.RitH1285of apermanentעוֹלָ֑םo.LamH5769priesthoodכְּהֻנַּ֣תke.hu.NatH3550,becauseתַּ֗חַת אֲשֶׁ֤רTa.chat 'a.SherH834 H8478he wasH7065jealousH7065for his Godלֵֽאלֹהָ֔יוle.lo.HavH430andmadeH3722atonementוַיְכַפֵּ֖רvay.kha.PerH3722for the sonsבְּנֵ֥יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃Yis.ra.'ElH3478.’”

14Now the nameוְשֵׁם֩ve.ShemH8034of thedeadהַמֻּכֶּ֗הha.mu.KehH5221manאִ֨ישׁ'ishH376of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֜לYis.ra.'ElH3478whoאֲשֶׁ֤ר'a.SherH834was killedהֻכָּה֙hu.KahH5221with the Midianiteהַמִּדְיָנִ֔יתha.mid.ya.NitH4084womanH4084,was Zimriזִמְרִ֖יzim.RiH2174the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Saluסָל֑וּאsa.Lu'H5543,a leaderנְשִׂ֥יאne.Si'H5387of a father’sאָ֖ב'avH1householdבֵֽית־veit-H1004among the Simeonitesלַשִּׁמְעֹנִֽי׃la.shim.'o.NiH8099.

15And the nameוְשֵׁ֨םve.ShemH8034of the Midianiteהַמִּדְיָנִ֖יתha.mid.ya.NitH4084womanהָֽאִשָּׁ֧הha.'i.ShahH802who was killedהַמֻּכָּ֛הha.mu.KahH5221wasCozbiכָּזְבִּ֣יka.ze.BiH3579the daughterבַת־vat-H1323ofZurצ֑וּרTzurH6698,whoהֽוּא׃ פHu'H1931was headרֹ֣אשׁroshH7218of the peopleאֻמּ֥וֹת'u.MotH523of a father’sאָ֛ב'avH1householdבֵּֽית־beit-H1004in Midianבְּמִדְיָ֖ןbe.mid.YanH4080.

16Then the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068spokeוַיְדַבֵּ֥רvay.da.BerH1696to Mosesמֹשֶׁ֥הmo.ShehH4872,sayingלֵּאמֹֽר׃le.MorH559,

17“Be hostileצָר֖וֹרtza.RorH6887to the Midianitesהַמִּדְיָנִ֑יםha.mid.ya.NimH4084and attackוְהִכִּיתֶ֖םve.hi.ki.TemH5221them;

18for they have beenH6887hostileH6887to you with their tricksבְּנִכְלֵיהֶ֛םbe.nikh.lei.HemH5231,with whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834they have deceivedנִכְּל֥וּni.ke.LuH5230you in the matterדְּבַר־de.var-H1697of Peorפְּע֑וֹרpe.'orH6465and in the matterדְּבַ֞רde.VarH1697of Cozbiכָּזְבִּ֨יka.ze.BiH3579,the daughterבַת־vat-H1323of the leaderנְשִׂ֤יאne.Si'H5387of Midianמִדְיָן֙mid.YanH4080,their sisterאֲחֹתָ֔ם'a.cho.TamH269who was killedהַמֻּכָּ֥הha.mu.KahH5221on the dayבְיוֹם־ve.yom-H3117of the plagueהַמַּגֵּפָ֖הha.ma.ge.FahH4046becauseדְּבַר־de.var-H5921 H1697of Peorפְּעֽוֹר׃pe.'orH6465.”
