Proverbs 17
Darby Bible
1Better is a dry morselH6595, and quietnessH7962 therewith, than a houseH1004 fullH4392 of feasting [with] strifeH7379. 2A wiseH7919 servantH5650 shall ruleH4910 over a sonH1121 that causeth shameH954, and shall have part in the inheritanceH5159 among the brethren. 3The fining-pot is for silverH3701, and the furnaceH3564 for goldH2091; but Jehovah trieth the heartsH3826. 4The evil-doer giveth heed to iniquitous lipsH8193; the liar giveth earH238 to a mischievous tongueH3956. 5Whoso mocketh a poorH7326 [man] reproacheth his Maker; he that is glad at calamityH343 shall not be held innocent. 6Children's children are the crownH5850 of old men; and the gloryH8597 of children are their fathersH1. 7Excellent speech becometh not a vile [man]; how much less do lyingH8267 lipsH8193 a nobleH5081! 8A gift is a precious stoneH68 in the eyesH5869 of the possessor: whithersoever it turneth it prospereth. 9He that covereth transgressionH6588 seeketh loveH160; but he that bringeth a matterH1697 up againH8138 separateth very friends. 10A reproof entereth more deeply into him that hath understandingH995 than a hundredH3967 stripes into a foolH3684. 11An evilH7451 [man] seeketh onlyH389 rebellionH4805; but a cruelH394 messengerH4397 shall be sentH7971 against him. 12Let a bearH1677 robbed of her whelps meetH6298 a manH376 rather than a foolH3684 in his follyH200. 13Whoso rewardeth evilH7451 for goodH2896, evilH7451 shall not departH4185 from his houseH1004. 14The beginning of contentionH4066 is [as] when one letteth out waterH4325; therefore leaveH5203 off strifeH7379 before it become vehement. 15He that justifieth the wickedH7563, and he that condemneth the righteousH6662, even they both are abominationH8441 to Jehovah. 16To what purpose is there a priceH4242 in the handH3027 of a foolH3684 to get wisdomH2451, seeing [he] hath no sense? 17The friendH7453 loveth at all timesH6256, and a brotherH251 is bornH3205 for adversity. 18A senseless manH120 striketh handsH3709, becoming suretyH6148 for his neighbour. 19He loveth transgressionH6588 that loveth a quarrel; he that maketh highH1361 his gate seeketh destructionH7667. 20He that hath a perverseH6141 heartH3820 findeth no goodH2896; and he that shifteth about with his tongueH3956 falleth into evilH7451. 21He that begetteth a foolH3684 [doeth it] to his sorrow, and the fatherH1 of a vile [man] hath no joy. 22A joyfulH8056 heartH3820 promoteth healing; but a broken spiritH7307 drieth up the bonesH1634. 23A wickedH7563 [man] taketh a gift out of the bosomH2436, to pervert the pathsH734 of judgmentH4941. 24WisdomH2451 is before him that hath understandingH995; but the eyesH5869 of a foolH3684 are in the ends of the earthH776. 25A foolish sonH1121 is a grief to his fatherH1, and bitterness to her that boreH3205 him. 26To punish a righteousH6662 [man] is not goodH2896, nor to strikeH5221 noblesH5081 because of [their] uprightnessH3476. 27He that hath knowledgeH1847 spareth his wordsH561; and a manH376 of understandingH8394 is of a cool spiritH7307. 28Even a foolH191 when he holdeth his peace is reckonedH2803 wiseH2450, [and] he that shutteth his lipsH8193, intelligent.
