2 Samuel 11

1And it came to pass, at the returnH8666 of the yearH8141, at the timeH6256 when kingsH4428 goH3318 outto battle, that DavidH1732 sentH7971 JoabH3097, and his servantsH5650 with him, and all IsraelH3478; and they destroyedH7843 the children of AmmonH5983, and besieged RabbahH7237. But DavidH1732 tarried at JerusalemH3389.

2And it came to pass at eventide, that DavidH1732 aroseH6965 from off his bedH4904, and walkedH1980 upon the roofH1406 of the king’sH4428 houseH1004: and from the roofH1406 he sawH7200 a womanH802 bathingH7364; and the womanH802 wasH1961 veryH3966 beautiful to lookH7200 upon. 3And DavidH1732 sentH7971 and inquired after the womanH802. And one saidH559, Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughterH1323 of EliamH463, the wifeH802 of UriahH223 the HittiteH2850? 4And DavidH1732 sentH7971 messengersH4397, and tookH3947 her; and she cameH935 in unto him, and he layH7901 with her (for she was purified from her uncleannessH2932); and she returnedH7725 unto her houseH1004. 5And the womanH802 conceivedH2029; and she sentH7971 and toldH5046 DavidH1732, and saidH559, I am with child.

6And DavidH1732 sentH7971 to JoabH3097, saying, SendH7971 me UriahH223 the HittiteH2850. And JoabH3097 sentH7971 UriahH223 to DavidH1732. 7And when UriahH223 was comeH935 unto him, DavidH1732 askedH7592 of him how JoabH3097 did, and how the peopleH5971 fared, and how the warH4421 prospered. 8And DavidH1732 saidH559 to UriahH223, GoH3318 down to thy houseH1004, and washH7364 thy feetH7272. And UriahH223 departed out of the king’sH4428 houseH1004, and there followed him a mess of food from the kingH4428. 9But UriahH223 slept at the doorH6607 of the king’sH4428 houseH1004 with all the servantsH5650 of his lordH113, and wentH3381 not downH3381 to his houseH1004. 10And when they had toldH5046 DavidH1732, sayingH559, UriahH223 wentH935 not downH3381 unto his houseH1004, DavidH1732 saidH559 unto UriahH223, Art thou not comeH935 from a journeyH1870? wherefore didst thou not goH935 down unto thy houseH1004? 11And UriahH223 saidH559 unto DavidH1732, The arkH727, and IsraelH3478, and JudahH3063, abide in boothsH5521; and my lordH113 JoabH3097, and the servantsH5650 of my lordH113, are encampedH2583 in the open fieldH7704; shall I then goH935 into my houseH1004, to eatH398 and to drinkH8354, and to lieH7901 with my wifeH802? as thou livest, and as thy soulH5315 liveth, I will not do this thingH1697. 12And DavidH1732 saidH559 to UriahH223, Tarry hereH2088 to-day alsoH1571, and to-morrow I will let thee depart. So UriahH223 abode in JerusalemH3389 that dayH3117, and the morrow. 13And when DavidH1732 had calledH7121 him, he did eatH398 and drinkH8354 before him; and he made him drunkH7937: and at even he wentH3318 out to lieH7901 on his bedH4904 with the servantsH5650 of his lordH113, but wentH3318 not downH3381 to his houseH1004.

14And it came to pass in the morningH1242, that DavidH1732 wroteH3789 a letterH5612 to JoabH3097, and sentH7971 it by the handH3027 of UriahH223. 15And he wroteH3789 in the letterH5612, sayingH559, Set ye UriahH223 in the forefront of the hottest battleH4421, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and dieH4191. 16And it came to pass, when JoabH3097 keptH8104 watchH8104 upon the cityH5892, that he assigned UriahH223 unto the placeH4725 whereH834 he knewH3045 that valiant menH376 were. 17And the menH376 of the cityH5892 wentH3318 out, and foughtH3898 with JoabH3097: and there fellH5307 some of the peopleH5971, even of the servantsH5650 of DavidH1732; and UriahH223 the HittiteH2850 diedH4191 alsoH1571. 18Then JoabH3097 sentH7971 and toldH5046 DavidH1732 all the thingsH1697 concerning the warH4421; 19and he charged the messengerH4397, sayingH559, When thou hast made an endH3615 of telling all the thingsH1697 concerningH413 the warH4421 unto the kingH4428, 20it shall beH1961 that, if the king’sH4428 wrathH2534 arise, and he sayH559 unto thee, Wherefore wentH5927 ye so nigh unto the cityH5892 to fightH3898? knewH3045 ye not that they would shootH3384 from the wallH2346? 21who smote AbimelechH40 the sonH1121 of Jerubbesheth? did not a womanH802 castH7993 an upperH7393 millstoneH7393 upon him from the wallH2346, so that he diedH4191 at ThebezH8405? whyH4100 went ye so nigh the wallH2346? then shalt thou sayH559, Thy servantH5650 UriahH223 the HittiteH2850 is deadH4191 alsoH1571.

22So the messengerH4397 wentH935, and cameH935 and showed DavidH1732 all that JoabH3097 had sentH7971 him for. 23And the messengerH4397 saidH559 unto DavidH1732, The menH376 prevailedH1396 against us, and came out unto us into the fieldH7704, and we wereH1961 upon them even unto the entranceH6607 of the gateH8179. 24And the shooters shotH3384 at thy servantsH5650 from off the wallH2346; and some of the king’sH4428 servantsH5650 are deadH4191, and thy servantH5650 UriahH223 the HittiteH2850 is deadH4191 alsoH1571. 25Then DavidH1732 saidH559 unto the messengerH4397, ThusH3541 shalt thou sayH559 unto JoabH3097, Let not this thingH1697 displease thee, for the swordH2719 devoureth oneH2088 as well as another; makeH2388 thy battleH4421 more strongH2388 against the cityH5892, and overthrow it: and encourageH2388 thou him.

26And when the wifeH802 of UriahH223 heardH8085 that UriahH223 her husbandH376 was deadH4191, she madeH8085 lamentation for her husbandH376. 27And when the mourningH60 wasH1961 past, DavidH1732 sentH7971 and took her home to his houseH1004, and she became his wifeH802, and bare him a sonH1121. But the thingH1697 that DavidH1732 had done displeased Jehovah.
