1 Chronicles 21:1-28

1And Satan stoodH5975 up against IsraelH3478, and moved DavidH1732 to numberH4487 IsraelH3478.

2And DavidH1732 saidH559 to JoabH3097 and to the princesH8269 of the peopleH5971, GoH935, numberH4557 IsraelH3478 from Beer-sheba even to DanH1835; and bringH935 the numberH4557 of them to me, that I may knowH3045 it.

3And JoabH3097 saidH559, Jehovah addH3254 to his peopleH5971, howH4100 many soever they beH1961, a hundredfold: are they not all, my lord O kingH4428, my lord's servantsH5650? whyH4100 does my lord requireH1245 this thing? whyH4100 should he becomeH1961 a trespass to IsraelH3478?

4But the king's wordH1697 prevailedH2388 against JoabH3097; and JoabH3097 departed, and wentH1980 through all IsraelH3478, and cameH935 [again] to JerusalemH3389.

5And JoabH3097 gaveH5414 the sum of the numberH4557 of the peopleH5971 to DavidH1732. And all they of IsraelH3478 wereH1961 eleven hundredH3967 thousandH505 menH376 that drewH8025 swordH2719; and of JudahH3063, fourH702 hundredH3967 and seventyH7657 thousandH505 menH376 that drewH8025 swordH2719.

6But LeviH3878 and BenjaminH1144 he did not count among them; for the king's wordH1697 was abominable to JoabH3097.

7And 1GodH430 was displeased on account of this thingH1697, and he smote IsraelH3478.

8And DavidH1732 saidH559 to 2GodH430, I have sinnedH2398 greatly, in that I have done this thingH1697; and nowH6258, I beseech thee, put awayH5674 the iniquityH5771 of thy servantH5650; for I have done veryH3966 foolishlyH5528.

9And Jehovah spokeH1696 to GadH1410, David's seerH2374, sayingH559,

10Go and speakH1696 to DavidH1732 sayingH559, ThusH3541 saith Jehovah: I offerH6213 thee threeH7969 [thingsH7969]; chooseH977 oneH259 of them, that I may do it unto thee.

11And GadH1410 cameH935 to DavidH1732, and saidH559 to him, ThusH3541 saith Jehovah:

12Choose thee, either threeH7969 yearsH8141 of famineH7458, or threeH7969 monthsH2320 to be destroyedH7843 before thine adversaries while that the swordH2719 of thine enemiesH341 overtaketh thee, or threeH7969 daysH3117 the swordH2719 of Jehovah and the pestilenceH1698 in the landH776, and the angelH4397 of Jehovah destroyingH7843 through all the bordersH1366 of IsraelH3478. And nowH6258 considerH7200 what wordH1697 I shall bringH7725 again to him that sentH7971 me.

13And DavidH1732 saidH559 to GadH1410, I am in a great strait: let me fallH5307, I pray thee, into the handH3027 of Jehovah, for his mercies are veryH3966 great; but let me not fallH5307 into the handH3027 of manH120.

14And Jehovah sent a pestilenceH1698 upon IsraelH3478; and there fellH5307 of IsraelH3478 seventyH7657 thousandH505 menH376.

15And 3GodH430 sentH7971 an angelH4397 to JerusalemH3389 to destroyH7843 it; and as he was destroyingH7843, Jehovah beheld, and he repentedH5162 him of the evilH7451, and saidH559 to the angelH4397 that destroyedH7843, It is enoughH7227; withdraw nowH6258 thine handH3027. And the angelH4397 of Jehovah stoodH5975 by the threshing-floor of OrnanH771 the JebusiteH2983.

16And DavidH1732 liftedH5375 up his eyesH5869, and sawH7200 the angelH4397 of Jehovah standH5975 between the earthH776 and the heavensH8064, and his swordH2719 drawnH8025 in his handH3027, stretchedH5186 out over JerusalemH3389. And DavidH1732 and the eldersH2205, clothed in sackclothH8242, fellH5307 on their facesH6440.

17And DavidH1732 saidH559 to 4GodH430, Is it not I that commanded the peopleH5971 to beH1961 numberedH4487? It is I that have sinnedH2398 and done evilH7489; but these sheepH6629, what have they done? Let thy handH3027, I pray thee, Jehovah my 5GodH430, beH1961 on me and on my father's houseH1004; but not on thy peopleH5971, that they should beH1961 smitten.

18And the angelH4397 of Jehovah commanded GadH1410 to sayH559 to DavidH1732, that DavidH1732 should goH5927 up and rear an altarH4196 to Jehovah in the threshing-floor of OrnanH771 the JebusiteH2983.

19And DavidH1732 wentH5927 up at the saying of GadH1410, which he had spokenH1696 in the nameH8034 of Jehovah.

20And OrnanH771 turnedH7725 backH7725 and sawH7200 the angelH4397; and his fourH702 sonsH1121 with him hidH2244 themselves. Now OrnanH771 was threshingH1758 wheatH2406.

21And DavidH1732 cameH935 to OrnanH771, and OrnanH771 lookedH7200 and sawH7200 DavidH1732, and wentH3318 out of the threshing-floor, and bowedH7812 himself to DavidH1732 with [his] faceH639 to the groundH776.

22And DavidH1732 saidH559 to OrnanH771, Grant me the placeH4725 of the threshing-floor, that I may buildH1129 an altarH4196 in it to Jehovah: grant it to me for the fullH4392 moneyH3701, that the plagueH4046 may be stayed from the peopleH5971.

23And OrnanH771 saidH559 to DavidH1732, TakeH3947 it to thee, and let my lordH113 the kingH4428 do that which is goodH2896 in his sight: seeH7200, I giveH5414 the oxenH1241 for the burnt-offering, and the threshing-sledges for woodH6086, and the wheatH2406 for the oblation; I giveH5414 it all.

24And kingH4428 DavidH1732 saidH559 to OrnanH771, No; but I will in any case buyH7069 [them] for the fullH4392 moneyH3701; for I will not takeH5375 that which is thine for Jehovah, to offerH5927 up a burnt-offering without cost.

25And DavidH1732 gaveH5414 to OrnanH771 for the placeH4725 in shekelsH8255 of goldH2091 the weightH4948 of sixH8337 hundredH3967 [shekelsH8255].

26And DavidH1732 builtH1129 there an altarH4196 to Jehovah, and offeredH5927 up burnt-offerings and peace-offerings, and calledH7121 upon Jehovah; and he answeredH6030 him from the heavensH8064 by fireH784 upon the altarH4196 of burnt-offering.

27And Jehovah spoke to the angelH4397; and he put up his swordH2719 again into its sheath.

28At that timeH6256 when DavidH1732 sawH7200 that Jehovah had answeredH6030 him in the threshing-floor of OrnanH771 the JebusiteH2983, then he sacrificedH2076 there.
