1 Chronicles 19
Darby Bible
1And it came to pass after this that NahashH5176 kingH4428 of the children of AmmonH5983 diedH4191, and his sonH1121 reignedH4427 in his stead. 2And DavidH1732 saidH559, I will shew kindness to HanunH2586 the sonH1121 of NahashH5176, because his fatherH1 shewed kindness to me. And DavidH1732 sentH7971 messengersH4397 to comfortH5162 him concerning his fatherH1. And David's servantsH5650 cameH935 into the landH776 of the children of AmmonH5983 to HanunH2586, to comfortH5162 him. 3And the princesH8269 of the children of AmmonH5983 saidH559 to HanunH2586, Is it, in thine eyesH5869, to honour thy fatherH1 that DavidH1732 has sentH7971 comfortersH5162 to thee? Is it not to searchH2713 and overthrowH2015, and to spyH7270 out the landH776 that his servantsH5650 are comeH935 to thee? 4And HanunH2586 tookH3947 David's servantsH5650, and had them shavedH1548, and their raiment cutH3772 off in the midst, as far as the hip, and sentH7971 them awayH7971. 5And [certain] wentH7725 and toldH5046 DavidH1732 concerning the menH376; and he sentH7971 to meet them, for the menH376 were greatly ashamedH3637. And the kingH4428 saidH559, Abide at JerichoH3405 until your beardsH2206 beH1961 grownH6779, and then returnH7725. 6And the children of AmmonH5983 sawH7200 that they had made themselves odiousH887 to DavidH1732; and HanunH2586 and the children of AmmonH5983 sentH7971 a thousandH505 talentsH3603 of silverH3701 to hireH7936 them chariotsH7393 and horsemenH6571 out of Mesopotamia, and from the Syrians of MaacahH4601, and from ZobahH6678. 7And they hiredH7936 thirty-two thousandH505 chariotsH7393, and the kingH4428 of MaacahH4601 and his peopleH5971; and they cameH935 and encampedH2583 before MedebaH4311. And the children of AmmonH5983 gatheredH622 together from their citiesH5892, and cameH935 to battleH4421. 8And DavidH1732 heardH8085 [of it], and he sentH7971 JoabH3097, and all the hostH6635, the mightyH1368 menH1368. 9And the children of AmmonH5983 cameH935 out, and put the battleH4421 in array at the entranceH6607 of the cityH5892; and the kingsH4428 that had comeH935 were by themselves on the fieldH7704. 10And JoabH3097 sawH7200 that the front of the battleH4421 wasH1961 against him before and behind; and he choseH977 out of all the choice menH970 of IsraelH3478, and put them in array against the Syrians; 11and the restH3499 of the peopleH5971 he gaveH5414 into the handH3027 of AbishaiH52 his brotherH251, and they setH5414 themselves in array against the children of AmmonH5983. 12And he saidH559, If the Syrians beH1961 too strongH2388 for me, then thou shalt help me; and if the children of AmmonH5983 beH1961 too strongH2388 for thee, then I will help thee. 13Be strongH2388, and let us shew ourselves valiant for our peopleH5971, and for the citiesH5892 of our 1GodH430; and Jehovah will do what is goodH2896 in his sight. 14And JoabH3097 and the peopleH5971 that were with him drewH5066 near in front of the Syrians to the battleH4421; and they fledH5127 before him. 15And when the children of AmmonH5983 sawH7200 that the Syrians fledH5127, they likewise fledH5127 before AbishaiH52 his brotherH251, and entered into the cityH5892. And JoabH3097 cameH935 to JerusalemH3389. 16And when the Syrians sawH7200 that they were routed before IsraelH3478, they sentH7971 messengersH4397, and drew forthH3318 the Syrians that were beyond the riverH5104; and ShophachH7780 the captain of the hostH6635 of Hadarezer [wentH3318] before them. 17And it was toldH5046 DavidH1732; and he gatheredH622 all IsraelH3478, and passedH5674 over the JordanH3383, and cameH935 upon them, and set [the battleH4421] in array against them. And DavidH1732 put the battleH4421 in array against the Syrians, and they foughtH3898 with him. 18And the Syrians fledH5127 from before IsraelH3478; and DavidH1732 slewH2026 of the Syrians sevenH7651 thousandH505 [in] chariotsH7393, and fortyH705 thousandH505 footmen, and slewH2026 ShophachH7780 the captain of the hostH6635. 19And the servantsH5650 of Hadarezer sawH7200 that they were routed before IsraelH3478, and they made peace with DavidH1732, and became his servantsH5650. And the Syrians wouldH14 no more help the children of AmmonH5983.
