1 Chronicles 21:1-28

1And Satan stoodH5975 up against IsraelH3478, and moved DavidH1732 to numberH4487 IsraelH3478. 2And DavidH1732 saidH559 to JoabH3097 and to the princesH8269 of the peopleH5971, GoH935, numberH4557 IsraelH3478 from Beer-sheba even to DanH1835; and bringH935 me word, that I may knowH3045 the sum of them. 3And JoabH3097 saidH559, Jehovah make his peopleH5971 a hundredH3967 timesH6471 as many as they are: but, my lord the kingH4428, are they not all my lord’s servantsH5650? whyH4100 doth my lord requireH1245 this thing? whyH4100 will he beH1961 a cause of guiltH819 unto IsraelH3478? 4Nevertheless the king’sH4428 wordH1697 prevailedH2388 against JoabH3097. Wherefore JoabH3097 departed, and wentH1980 throughout all IsraelH3478, and cameH935 to JerusalemH3389. 5And JoabH3097 gaveH5414 up the sum of the numberingH4557 of the peopleH5971 unto DavidH1732. And all they of IsraelH3478 wereH1961 a thousandH505 thousandH505 and a hundredH3967 thousandH505 menH376 that drewH8025 swordH2719: and JudahH3063 wasH1961 fourH702 hundredH3967 threescore and ten thousandH505 menH376 that drewH8025 swordH2719. 6But LeviH3878 and BenjaminH1144 counted he not among them; for the king’sH4428 wordH1697 was abominable to JoabH3097. 7And GodH430 was displeased with this thingH1697; therefore he smote IsraelH3478. 8And DavidH1732 saidH559 unto GodH430, I have sinnedH2398 greatly, in that I have done this thingH1697: but nowH6258, put awayH5674, I beseech thee, the iniquityH5771 of thy servantH5650; for I have done veryH3966 foolishlyH5528.

9And Jehovah spake unto GadH1410, David’s seerH2374, sayingH559, 10Go and speakH1696 unto DavidH1732, sayingH559, ThusH3541 saith Jehovah, I offerH6213 thee threeH7969 thingsH7969: chooseH977 thee oneH259 of them, that I may do it unto thee. 11So GadH1410 cameH935 to DavidH1732, and saidH559 unto him, ThusH3541 saith Jehovah, Take which thou wilt: 12either threeH7969 yearsH8141 of famineH7458; or threeH7969 monthsH2320 to be consumed before thy foes, while the swordH2719 of thine enemiesH341 overtaketh thee; or else threeH7969 daysH3117 the swordH2719 of Jehovah, even pestilenceH1698 in the landH776, and the angelH4397 of Jehovah destroyingH7843 throughout all the bordersH1366 of IsraelH3478. NowH6258 thereforeH6258 considerH7200 what answer I shall returnH7725 to him that sentH7971 me. 13And DavidH1732 saidH559 unto GadH1410, I am in a great strait: let me fallH5307, I pray, into the handH3027 of Jehovah; for veryH3966 great are his mercies: and let me not fallH5307 into the handH3027 of manH120. 14So Jehovah sent a pestilenceH1698 upon IsraelH3478; and there fellH5307 of IsraelH3478 seventyH7657 thousandH505 menH376. 15And GodH430 sentH7971 an angelH4397 unto JerusalemH3389 to destroyH7843 it: and as he was about to destroyH7843, Jehovah beheld, and he repentedH5162 him of the evilH7451, and saidH559 to the destroyingH7843 angelH4397, It is enoughH7227; nowH6258 stay thy handH3027. And the angelH4397 of Jehovah was standingH5975 by the threshing-floor of OrnanH771 the JebusiteH2983. 16And DavidH1732 liftedH5375 up his eyesH5869, and sawH7200 the angelH4397 of Jehovah standingH5975 between earthH776 and heavenH8064, having a drawnH8025 swordH2719 in his handH3027 stretchedH5186 out over JerusalemH3389. Then DavidH1732 and the eldersH2205, clothed in sackclothH8242, fellH5307 upon their facesH6440. 17And DavidH1732 saidH559 unto GodH430, Is it not I that commanded the peopleH5971 to beH1961 numberedH4487? even I it is that have sinnedH2398 and done very wickedly; but these sheepH6629, what have they done? let thy handH3027, I pray thee, O Jehovah my GodH430, beH1961 against me, and against my father’sH1 houseH1004; but not against thy peopleH5971, that they should beH1961 plaguedH4046.

18Then the angelH4397 of Jehovah commanded GadH1410 to sayH559 to DavidH1732, that DavidH1732 should goH5927 up, and rear an altarH4196 unto Jehovah in the threshing-floor of OrnanH771 the JebusiteH2983. 19And DavidH1732 wentH5927 up at the saying of GadH1410, which he spake in the nameH8034 of Jehovah. 20And OrnanH771 turnedH7725 backH7725, and sawH7200 the angelH4397; and his fourH702 sonsH1121 that were with him hidH2244 themselves. Now OrnanH771 was threshingH1758 wheatH2406. 21And as DavidH1732 cameH935 to OrnanH771, OrnanH771 lookedH7200 and sawH7200 DavidH1732, and wentH3318 out of the threshing-floor, and bowedH7812 himself to DavidH1732 with his faceH639 to the groundH776. 22Then DavidH1732 saidH559 to OrnanH771, GiveH5414 me the placeH4725 of this threshing-floor, that I may buildH1129 thereon an altarH4196 unto Jehovah: for the fullH4392 price shalt thou giveH5414 it me, that the plagueH4046 may be stayed from the peopleH5971. 23And OrnanH771 saidH559 unto DavidH1732, TakeH3947 it to thee, and let my lordH113 the kingH4428 do that which is goodH2896 in his eyesH5869: lo, I giveH5414 thee the oxenH1241 for burnt-offerings, and the threshing instruments for woodH6086, and the wheatH2406 for the meal-offering; I giveH5414 it all. 24And kingH4428 DavidH1732 saidH559 to OrnanH771, Nay; but I will verily buyH7069 it for the fullH4392 price: for I will not takeH5375 that which is thine for Jehovah, nor offerH5927 a burnt-offering without cost. 25So DavidH1732 gaveH5414 to OrnanH771 for the placeH4725 sixH8337 hundredH3967 shekelsH8255 of goldH2091 by weightH4948. 26And DavidH1732 builtH1129 there an altarH4196 unto Jehovah, and offeredH5927 burnt-offerings and peace-offerings, and calledH7121 upon Jehovah; and he answeredH6030 him from heavenH8064 by fireH784 upon the altarH4196 of burnt-offering. 27And Jehovah commanded the angelH4397; and he put up his swordH2719 again into the sheath thereof.

28At that timeH6256, when DavidH1732 sawH7200 that Jehovah had answeredH6030 him in the threshing-floor of OrnanH771 the JebusiteH2983, then he sacrificedH2076 there.
