1 Chronicles 21:1-28
11Then SatanH7854 stoodH5975 up againstH5921 IsraelH3478 and movedH5496 DavidH1732 to numberH4487 IsraelH3478. 2So DavidH1732 saidH559 to JoabH3097 and to the princesH8269 of the peopleH5971, “2GoH1980, numberH5608 IsraelH3478 from BeershebaH884 even to DanH1835, and bringH935 me word that I may knowH3045 their numberH4557.” 3JoabH3097 saidH559, “3May the LordH3068 addH3254 to His peopleH5971 a hundredH3967 timesH6471 as many as they are! But, my lordH113 the kingH4428, are they not allH3605 my lord’sH113 servantsH5650? WhyH4100 does my lordH113 seekH1245 thisH2088 thingH2088? WhyH4100 should he be a causeH819 of guiltH819 to IsraelH3478?” 4Nevertheless, the king’sH4428 wordH1697 prevailedH2388 againstH5921 JoabH3097. Therefore, JoabH3097 departedH3318 and wentH1980 throughout allH3605 IsraelH3478, and cameH935 to JerusalemH3389. 5JoabH3097 gaveH5414 the numberH4557 of the 4censusH4662 of all the peopleH5971 to DavidH1732. And 5allH3605 IsraelH3478 were 1,100,000H505H3967 menH376 who drewH8025 the swordH2719; and JudahH3063 was 470,000H702H3967H7657H505 menH376 who drewH8025 the swordH2719. 66But he did not 7numberH6485 LeviH3878 and BenjaminH1144 amongH8432 them, for the king’sH4428 8commandH1697 was abhorrentH8581 to JoabH3097.
79GodH430 was displeasedH7489H5869 with thisH2088 thingH1697, so He struckH5221 IsraelH3478. 8DavidH1732 saidH559 to GodH430, “I have sinnedH2398 greatlyH3966, in that I have doneH6213 thisH2088 thingH1697. 10But nowH6258, pleaseH4994 takeH5674 awayH5674 the iniquityH5771 of Your servantH5650, for I have doneH5528 veryH3966 foolishlyH5528.”
9The LordH3068 spokeH1696 to 11GadH1410, David’sH1732 12seerH2374, sayingH559, 10“GoH1980 and speakH1696 to DavidH1732, sayingH559, ‘ThusH3541 saysH559 the LordH3068, “I 13offerH5186 you threeH7969 thingsH7969; chooseH977 for yourself oneH259 of them, which I will doH6213 to you.”’” 11So GadH1410 cameH935 to DavidH1732 and saidH559 to him, “ThusH3541 saysH559 the LordH3068, ‘TakeH6901 for yourself 1214eitherH518 threeH7969 yearsH8141 of famineH7458, or threeH7969 monthsH2320 to be sweptH5595 awayH5595 beforeH4480H6440 your foesH6862, while the swordH2719 of your enemiesH340 overtakesH5381 you, or else threeH7969 daysH3117 of the swordH2719 of the LordH3068, even pestilenceH1698 in the landH776, and the angelH4397 of the LordH3068 destroyingH7843 throughout allH3605 the territoryH1366 of IsraelH3478.’ NowH6258, therefore, considerH7200 whatH4100 answerH1697 I shall returnH7725 to Him who sentH7971 me.” 13DavidH1732 saidH559 to GadH1410, “I am in greatH3966 distressH6887; pleaseH4994 let me fallH5307 into the handH3027 of the LordH3068, 15for His merciesH7356 are veryH3966 greatH7227. But do not let me fallH5307 into the handH3027 of manH120.”
1416So the LordH3068 17sentH5414 a pestilenceH1698 on IsraelH3478; 70,000H7657H505 menH376 of IsraelH3478 fellH5307. 15And GodH430 sentH7971 an angelH4397 to JerusalemH3389 to destroyH7843 it; but as he was about to destroyH7843 it, the LordH3068 sawH7200 and 18was sorryH5162 overH5921 the calamityH7463, and saidH559 to the destroyingH7843 angelH4397, “It is enoughH7227; nowH6258 relaxH7503 your handH3027.” And the angelH4397 of the LordH3068 was standingH5975 by the threshingH1637 floorH1637 of 19OrnanH771 the JebusiteH2983. 16Then DavidH1732 liftedH5375 up his eyesH5869 and sawH7200 the angelH4397 of the LordH3068 standingH5975 betweenH996 earthH776 and heavenH8064, with his drawnH8025 swordH2719 in his handH3027 stretchedH5186 out overH5921 JerusalemH3389. Then DavidH1732 and the eldersH2205, 20coveredH3680 with sackclothH8242, fellH5307 on their facesH6440. 17DavidH1732 saidH559 to GodH430, “Is it not I who 21commandedH559 to countH4487 the peopleH5971? Indeed, I am the one whoH834 has sinnedH2398 and doneH7489 veryH7489 wickedlyH7489, 22but theseH428 sheepH6629, whatH4100 have they doneH6213? O LordH3068 my GodH430, pleaseH4994 let Your handH3027 be against me and my father’sH1 householdH1004, but not against Your peopleH5971 that they should be plaguedH4046.”
1823Then the angelH4397 of the LordH3068 24commandedH559 GadH1410 to sayH559 to DavidH1732, that DavidH1732 should goH5927 up and buildH6965 an altarH4196 to the LordH3068 on the threshingH1637 floorH1637 of OrnanH771 the JebusiteH2983. 19So DavidH1732 wentH5927 up at the wordH1697 of GadH1410, whichH834 he spokeH1696 in the nameH8034 of the LordH3068. 20Now OrnanH771 turnedH7725 backH7725 and sawH7200 the angelH4397, and his fourH702 sonsH1121 who were with him hidH2244 themselves. And OrnanH771 was threshingH1758 wheatH2406. 21As DavidH1732 cameH935 to OrnanH771, OrnanH771 lookedH5027 and sawH7200 DavidH1732, and wentH3318 out from the threshingH1637 floorH1637 and prostratedH7812 himself 25before DavidH1732 with his faceH639 to the groundH776. 22Then DavidH1732 saidH559 to OrnanH771, “GiveH5414 me the 26siteH4725 of this threshingH1637 floorH1637, that I may buildH1129 on it an altarH4196 to the LordH3068; for the fullH4392 priceH3701 you shall giveH5414 it to me, that the plagueH4046 may be restrainedH6113 from the peopleH5971.” 23OrnanH771 saidH559 to DavidH1732, “TakeH3947 it for yourself; and let my lordH113 the kingH4428 doH6213 whatH2896 is goodH2896 in his sightH5869. SeeH7200, I will giveH5414 the oxenH1241 for burntH5930 offeringsH5930 and the threshingH4173 sledgesH4173 for woodH6086 and the wheatH2406 for the grain offeringH4503; I will giveH5414 it allH3605.” 24But KingH4428 DavidH1732 saidH559 to OrnanH771, “NoH3808, but I will surelyH7069 buyH7069 it for the fullH4392 priceH3701; for I will not takeH5375 whatH834 is yours for the LordH3068, or offerH5927 a burntH5930 offeringH5930 27whichH2600 costsH2600 me nothingH2600.” 25So 28DavidH1732 gaveH5414 OrnanH771 600H8337H3967 shekelsH8255 of goldH2091 by weightH4948 for the 29siteH4725. 26Then DavidH1732 builtH1129 an altarH4196 to the LordH3068 thereH8033 and offeredH5927 burntH5930 offeringsH5930 and peaceH8002 offeringsH8002. And he calledH7121 to the LordH3068 and 30He answeredH6030 him with fireH784 from heavenH8064 on the altarH4196 of burntH5930 offeringH5930. 27The LordH3068 commandedH559 the angelH4397, and he putH7725 his swordH2719 backH7725 in its sheathH5084.
28At that timeH6256, when DavidH1732 sawH7200 that the LordH3068 had answeredH6030 him on the threshingH1637 floorH1637 of OrnanH771 the JebusiteH2983, he offeredH2076 sacrificeH2076 thereH8033.
