Ezekiel’s Commission

1Then He saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to me, “Sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of manאָדָ֕ם'a.DamH120,eatאֱכ֑וֹל'e.KholH398whatאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834you findתִּמְצָ֖אtim.Tza'H4672;eatאֱכוֹל֙'e.khOlH398thisH2088scrollהַמְּגִלָּ֣הha.me.gi.LahH4039,and goוְלֵ֥ךְve.LekhH1980,speakדַּבֵּ֖רda.BerH1696to the houseבֵּ֥יתbeitH1004of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃Yis.ra.'ElH3478.”

2So Iopenedוָאֶפְתַּ֖חva.'ef.TachH6605my mouthפִּ֑יPiH6310,and He fedוַיַּ֣אֲכִלֵ֔נִיvai.Ya.'a.khi.Le.niH398me thisH2088scrollהַמְּגִלָּ֥הha.me.gi.LahH4039.

3And He saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to me, “Sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of manאָדָם֙'a.DamH120,feedתַֽאֲכֵל֙ta.'a.KhelH398your stomachבִּטְנְךָ֤bit.ne.KhaH990andfillתְמַלֵּ֔אte.ma.Le'H4390yourbodyוּמֵעֶ֣יךָu.me.'Ei.khaH4578with thisH2088scrollהַמְּגִלָּ֣הha.me.gi.LahH4039whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834I am givingנֹתֵ֣ןno.TenH5414you.” Then Iateוָאֹ֣כְלָ֔הva.'O.khe.LahH398it, and it was as sweetלְמָתֽוֹק׃ פle.ma.TokH4966ashoneyכִּדְבַ֥שׁkid.VashH1706in my mouthבְּפִ֖יbe.FiH6310.

4Then He saidוַיֹּ֖אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to me, “Sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of manאָדָ֗ם'a.DamH120,goלֶךְ־ בֹּא֙lekh- bo'H1980 H935to the houseבֵּ֣יתbeitH1004of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478and speakוְדִבַּרְתָּ֥ve.di.bar.TaH1696with My wordsבִדְבָרַ֖יvid.va.RaiH1697to them.

5Foryou are not being sentשָׁל֑וּחַsha.Lu.achH7971to a peopleעַ֨ם'amH5971ofunintelligibleעִמְקֵ֥י'im.KeiH6012speechשָׂפָ֛הsa.FahH8193or difficultוְכִבְדֵ֥יve.khiv.DeiH3515languageלָשׁ֖וֹןla.ShonH3956, butto the houseבֵּ֖יתbeitH1004of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃Yis.ra.'ElH3478,

6norH3808to manyרַבִּ֗יםra.BimH7227peoplesעַמִּ֣ים'a.MimH5971ofunintelligibleעִמְקֵ֤י'im.KeiH6012speechשָׂפָה֙sa.FahH8193or difficultוְכִבְדֵ֣יve.khiv.DeiH3515languageלָשׁ֔וֹןla.ShonH3956,whoseאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834wordsדִּבְרֵיהֶ֑םdiv.rei.HemH1697you cannotH3808understandתִשְׁמַ֖עtish.Ma'H8085.But I have sentשְׁלַחְתִּ֔יךָshe.lach.Ti.khaH7971you tothe people who understandיִשְׁמְע֥וּyish.me.'UH8085you;

7yet the houseוּבֵ֣יתu.VeitH1004of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֗לYis.ra.'ElH3478will not beH14willingיֹאבוּ֙yo.VuH14to listenלִשְׁמֹ֣עַlish.Mo.a'H8085to you, sinceכִּֽי־ki-H3588they areH14not willingאֹבִ֖ים'o.VimH14to listenלִשְׁמֹ֣עַlish.Mo.a'H8085to Me. The entireכָּל־kol-H3605houseבֵּ֣יתbeitH1004of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478certainlyכִּ֚יkiH3588isstubbornחִזְקֵי־ מֵ֥צַחchiz.kei- Me.tzachH2389 H4696and obstinateוּקְשֵׁי־ לֵ֖בu.ke.shei- levH7186 H3820.

8Beholdהִנֵּ֨הhi.NehH2009,I have madeנָתַ֧תִּיna.Ta.tiH5414your faceפָּנֶ֛יךָpa.Nei.khaH6440justלְעֻמַּ֣תle.'u.MatH5980as hardחֲזָקִ֖יםcha.za.KimH2389as their facesפְּנֵיהֶ֑םpe.nei.HemH6440,and your foreheadמִצְחֲךָ֥mitz.cha.KhaH4696justלְעֻמַּ֥תle.'u.MatH5980as hardחָזָ֖קcha.ZakH2389as their foreheadsמִצְחָֽם׃mitz.ChamH4696.

9Like emeryכְּשָׁמִ֛ירke.sha.MirH8068harderחָזָ֥קcha.ZakH2389thanH4480flintמִצֹּ֖רmi.TzorH6864I have madeנָתַ֣תִּיna.Ta.tiH5414your foreheadמִצְחֶ֑ךָmitz.Che.khaH4696.Do not beH3372afraidH3372of them or be dismayedתֵחַ֣תte.ChatH2865beforeמִפְּנֵיהֶ֔םmi.pe.nei.HemH4480 H6440them, sinceכִּ֛יkiH3588they are a rebelliousמְרִ֖יme.RiH4805houseבֵּֽית־beit-H1004.”

10Moreover, He saidוַיֹּ֖אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to me, “Sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of manאָדָ֕ם'a.DamH120,takeקַ֥חkachH3947into your heartבִּֽלְבָבְךָ֖bil.va.ve.KhaH3824allכָּל־kol-H3605Mywordsדְּבָרַי֙de.va.RaiH1697whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834I will speakאֲדַבֵּ֣ר'a.da.BerH1696to you and listenשְׁמָֽע׃she.Ma'H8085closelyוּבְאָזְנֶ֥יךָu.ve.'a.ze.Nei.khaH241.

11Goוְלֵ֨ךְve.LekhH1980to the exilesהַגּוֹלָה֙ha.go.LahH1473,to the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of your peopleעַמֶּ֔ךָ'a.Me.khaH5971,and speakוְדִבַּרְתָּ֤ve.di.bar.TaH1696to them and tellוְאָמַרְתָּ֣ve.'a.mar.TaH559them, whetherאִֽם־'im-H518they listenיִשְׁמְע֖וּyish.me.'UH8085orוְאִם־ve.'im-H518not, ‘ThisH3541isH3541whatH3541the Lordאֲדֹנָ֣י'a.do.NaiH136GodH3068saysאָמַ֖ר'a.MarH559.’”

12Then theSpiritר֔וּחַRu.achH7307liftedוַתִּשָּׂאֵ֣נִיva.ti.sa.'E.niH5375me upH5375,and I heardוָאֶשְׁמַ֣עva.'esh.Ma'H8085a greatגָּד֑וֹלga.DolH1419rumblingרַ֣עַשׁRa.'ashH7494soundק֖וֹלKolH6963behindאַחֲרַ֔י'a.cha.RaiH310me: “Blessedבָּר֥וּךְba.RukhH1288be the gloryכְּבוֹד־ke.Vod-H3519of the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068from His placeמִמְּקוֹמֽוֹ׃mi.me.ko.MoH4725!”

13And I heardthe soundוְק֣וֹל׀ve.KolH6963of the wingsכַּנְפֵ֣יkan.FeiH3671of the livingH2421beingsH2421touchingמַשִּׁיקוֹת֙ma.shi.kOtH5401oneאִשָּׁ֣ה'i.ShahH802anotherאֲחוֹתָ֔הּ'a.cho.TahH269and the soundוְק֥וֹלve.KolH6963of thewheelsהָאוֹפַנִּ֖יםha.'o.fa.NimH212besideלְעֻמָּתָ֑םle.'u.ma.TamH5980them, even a greatגָּדֽוֹל׃ga.DolH1419rumblingרַ֥עַשׁRa.'ashH7494soundוְק֖וֹלve.KolH6963.

14So the Spiritוְר֥וּחַve.Ru.achH7307liftedנְשָׂאַ֖תְנִיne.sa.'At.niH5375me upH5375and tookוַתִּקָּחֵ֑נִיva.ti.ka.Che.niH3947me away; and I wentוָאֵלֵ֥ךְva.'e.LekhH1980embitteredמַר֙marH4751in the rageבַּחֲמַ֣תba.cha.MatH2534of my spiritרוּחִ֔יru.ChiH7307, andthe handוְיַד־ve.yad-H3027of the Lordיְהוָ֥הYah.wehH3068was strongH2389on me.

15Then I cameוָאָב֨וֹאva.'a.Vo'H935to the exilesהַגּוֹלָ֜הha.go.LahH1473who livedH3427besideH413the riverנְהַר־ne.har-H5104Chebarכְּבָר֙ke.VarH3529atTel-abibH8512,and I satH3427thereשָׁ֑םShamH8033forsevenשִׁבְעַ֥תshiv.'AtH7651daysיָמִ֖יםya.MimH3117whereשָׁ֛םshamH8033they were livingH3427,causingH8074consternationH8074amongבְּתוֹכָֽם׃be.to.KhamH8432them.

16Nowat the endמִקְצֵ֖הmik.TzehH7097of sevenשִׁבְעַ֣תshiv.'AtH7651daysיָמִ֑ים פya.MimH3117the wordדְבַר־de.var-H1697of the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068cameH1961to me, sayingלֵאמֹֽר׃le.MorH559,

17“Sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of manאָדָ֕ם'a.DamH120,I have appointedנְתַתִּ֖יךָne.ta.Ti.khaH5414you as awatchmanצֹפֶ֥הtzo.PehH6822for the houseלְבֵ֣יתle.VeitH1004of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478;whenever you hearוְשָׁמַעְתָּ֤ve.sha.ma'.TaH8085a wordדָּבָ֔רda.VarH1697from My mouthמִפִּי֙mi.PiH6310,warnוְהִזְהַרְתָּ֥ve.hiz.har.TaH2094them from Me.

18When I sayבְּאָמְרִ֤יbe.'a.me.RiH559to the wickedלָֽרָשָׁע֙la.ra.Sha'H7563, ‘You will certainlyמ֣וֹתMotH4191dieתָּמ֔וּתta.MutH4191,’and you do not warnהִזְהַרְתּ֗וֹhiz.har.ToH2094him or speakH1696outH1696to warnלְהַזְהִ֥ירle.haz.HirH2094the wickedרָשָׁ֛עra.Sha'H7563from his wickedהָרְשָׁעָ֖הha.re.sha.'AhH7563wayמִדַּרְכּ֥וֹmi.dar.KoH1870so that he may liveלְחַיֹּת֑וֹle.chai.yo.ToH2421,that wickedרָשָׁע֙ra.Sha'H7563personH7563shall dieיָמ֔וּתya.MutH4191for wrongdoingבַּעֲוֹנ֣וֹba.'a.vo.NoH5771, but hisbloodוְדָמ֖וֹve.da.MoH1818I will requireאֲבַקֵּֽשׁ׃'a.va.KeshH1245from your handמִיָּדְךָ֥mi.ya.de.KhaH3027.

19However ifכִּֽי־ki-H3588you havewarnedהִזְהַ֣רְתָּhiz.Har.taH2094the wickedרָשָׁ֔עra.Sha'H7563and he does not turnשָׁב֙shavH7725from his wickednessמֵֽרִשְׁע֔וֹme.rish.'OH7562or from his wickedהָרְשָׁעָ֑הha.re.sha.'AhH7563wayוּמִדַּרְכּ֖וֹu.mi.dar.KoH1870,he shall dieיָמ֔וּתya.MutH4191for wrongdoingבַּעֲוֹנ֣וֹba.'a.vo.NoH5771, but you havesavedהִצַּֽלְתָּ׃ סhi.Tzal.taH5337yourselfנַפְשְׁךָ֥naf.she.KhaH5315.

20Again,when a righteousצַדִּ֤יקtza.DikH6662personH6662turnsH7725awayוּבְשׁ֨וּבu.ve.ShuvH7725from his righteousnessמִצִּדְקוֹ֙mi.tzid.KoH6664and commitsוְעָ֣שָׂהve.'A.sahH6213sinעָ֔וֶל'A.velH5766,and I placeוְנָתַתִּ֥יve.na.ta.TiH5414anobstacleמִכְשׁ֛וֹלmikh.SholH4383beforeלְפָנָ֖יוle.fa.NavH6440him, he will dieיָמ֑וּתya.MutH4191;sinceכִּ֣יkiH3588you have not warnedהִזְהַרְתּוֹ֙hiz.har.ToH2094him, he shall dieיָמ֔וּתya.MutH4191in his sinבְּחַטָּאת֣וֹbe.cha.ta.ToH2403,and his righteousH6666deedsH6666whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834he has doneעָשָׂ֔ה'a.SahH6213shall not be rememberedתִזָּכַ֗רְןָti.za.Khar.naH2142;but his bloodוְדָמ֖וֹve.da.MoH1818I will requireאֲבַקֵּֽשׁ׃'a.va.KeshH1245from your handמִיָּדְךָ֥mi.ya.de.KhaH3027.

21However, ifכִּ֧יkiH3588you havewarnedהִזְהַרְתּ֣וֹhiz.har.ToH2094the righteousצַדִּ֗יקtza.DikH6662personצַדִּ֖יקtza.DikH6662that the righteousH6662is not to sinחֲטֹ֛אcha.To'H2398,and he does not sinחָטָ֑אcha.Ta'H2398,he shall certainlyחָי֤וֹcha.YoH2421liveיִֽחְיֶה֙yich.YehH2421becauseכִּ֣יkiH3588he tookH2094warningנִזְהָ֔רniz.HarH2094;and you have savedהִצַּֽלְתָּ׃ סhi.Tzal.taH5337yourselfנַפְשְׁךָ֥naf.she.KhaH5315.”

22Now the handיַד־yad-H3027of the Lordיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068was on me thereשָׁ֖םshamH8033,and He saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to me, “GetH6965upH6965,goצֵא֙tze'H3318outH3318to the plainהַבִּקְעָ֔הha.bik.'AhH1237,and thereוְשָׁ֖םve.ShamH8033I willspeakאֲדַבֵּ֥ר'a.da.BerH1696to you.”

23So I gotH6965upH6965and wentH3318outH3318to the plainהַבִּקְעָה֒ha.bik.'AhH1237;and beholdוְהִנֵּה־ve.hi.neh-H2009, thegloryכְּבוֹד־ke.Vod-H3519of the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068was standingעֹמֵ֔ד'o.MedH5975thereשָׁ֤םshamH8033,like the gloryכַּכָּב֕וֹדka.ka.VodH3519thatI sawרָאִ֖יתִיra.'I.tiH7200by the riverנְהַר־ne.har-H5104Chebarכְּבָ֑רke.VarH3529,and I fellוָאֶפֹּ֖לva.'e.PolH5307on my faceפָּנָֽי׃pa.NaiH6440.

24But theSpiritר֔וּחַRu.achH7307enteredוַתָּבֹא־va.ta.vo'-H935me and setH5975me upH5975on my feetרַגְלָ֑יrag.LaiH7272;and He spokeוַיְדַבֵּ֤רvay.da.BerH1696with me and saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to me, “Goבֹּ֥אbo'H935,shutהִסָּגֵ֖רhi.sa.GerH5462yourself insideבְּת֥וֹךְbe.TokhH8432your houseבֵּיתֶֽךָ׃bei.Te.khaH1004.

25And as for you, sonבֶן־ven-H1121of manאָדָ֗ם'a.DamH120, they willputנָתְנ֤וּna.te.NuH5414ropesעֲבוֹתִ֔יםa.vo.TimH5688around you and bindוַאֲסָר֖וּךָva.'a.sa.Ru.khaH631you with them so that you do not goתֵצֵ֖אte.Tze'H3318outH3318amongבְּתוֹכָֽם׃be.to.KhamH8432them.

26Moreover,I will make your tongueוּלְשֽׁוֹנְךָ֙u.le.shon.KhaH3956stickאַדְבִּ֣יק'ad.BikH1692to the roofH2441ofH2441your mouthH2441so that you will be unableH481toH481speakH481and will not be a manלְאִ֣ישׁle.'IshH376who reprimandsמוֹכִ֑יחַmo.Khi.achH3198them, sinceכִּ֛יkiH3588they are a rebelliousמְרִ֖יme.RiH4805houseבֵּ֥יתbeitH1004.

27Butwhen I speakוּֽבְדַבְּרִ֤יu.ve.da.be.RiH1696to you, I will openאֶפְתַּ֣ח'ef.TachH6605your mouthפִּ֔יךָPi.khaH6310and you will sayוְאָמַרְתָּ֣ve.'a.mar.TaH559to them, ‘ThisH3541isH3541whatH3541the Lordאֲדֹנָ֣י'a.do.NaiH136GodH3068saysאָמַ֖ר'a.MarH559:’The one who hearsהַשֹּׁמֵ֤עַ׀ha.sho.Me.a'H8085,let him hearיִשְׁמָע֙yish.Ma'H8085;and the one who refusesוְהֶחָדֵ֣ל׀ve.he.cha.DelH2310,let him refuseיֶחְדָּ֔לyech.DalH2308;for they are a rebelliousמְרִ֖יme.RiH4805houseבֵּ֥יתbeitH1004.
