1Then Hannahחַנָּה֙cha.NahH2584prayedוַתִּתְפַּלֵּ֤לva.tit.pa.LelH6419and saidוַתֹּאמַ֔רva.to.MarH559, “My heartלִבִּי֙li.BiH3820rejoicesעָלַ֤ץ'a.LatzH5970in the Lordבַּֽיהוָ֔הba.Yah.wehH3068; Myhornקַרְנִ֖יkar.NiH7161is exaltedרָ֥מָהRa.mahH7311in the Lordבַּֽיהוָ֑הba.Yah.wehH3068,My mouthפִּי֙piH6310speaksH7337boldlyH7337againstעַל־'al-H5921my enemiesH340,Becauseכִּ֥יkiH3588I rejoiceשָׂמַ֖חְתִּיsa.Mach.tiH8055in Your salvationבִּישׁוּעָתֶֽךָ׃bi.shu.'a.Te.khaH3444.
3Do not go onboastingתַּרְבּ֤וּ תְדַבְּרוּ֙tar.Bu te.da.be.RuH1696H7235so veryגְּבֹהָ֣הge.vo.HahH1364proudlyגְבֹהָ֔הge.vo.HahH1364,Do not let arroganceעָתָ֖ק'a.TakH6277comeH3318outH3318of your mouthמִפִּיכֶ֑םmi.pi.KhemH6310;For the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068is a Godאֵ֤ל'elH410of knowledgeדֵּעוֹת֙de.'OtH1844, Andwith Him actionsעֲלִלֽוֹת׃a.li.LotH5949are weighedנִתְכְּנ֖וּnit.ke.NuH8505.
5Those who were fullשְׂבֵעִ֤יםse.ve.'ImH7649hireנִשְׂכָּ֔רוּnis.Ka.ruH7936themselves outH7936for breadבַּלֶּ֙חֶם֙ba.Le.chemH3899,But those who were hungryוּרְעֵבִ֖יםu.re.'e.VimH7457ceaseחָדֵ֑לּוּcha.De.luH2308to be hungry.Evenעַד־'ad-H5704the infertileH6135womanעֲקָרָה֙'a.ka.RahH6135givesH3205birthH3205to sevenשִׁבְעָ֔הshiv.'AhH7651, Butshe who has manyוְרַבַּ֥תve.ra.BatH7227childrenבָּנִ֖יםba.NimH1121languishesאֻמְלָֽלָה׃'um.La.lahH535.
8He raisesמֵקִ֨יםme.KimH6965the poorדָּ֗לDalH1800from the dustמֵעָפָ֜רme.'a.FarH6083,He liftsיָרִ֣יםya.RimH7311the needyאֶבְי֔וֹן'ev.YonH34from the garbageמֵֽאַשְׁפֹּת֙me.'ash.PotH830heapH6083To seatלְהוֹשִׁיב֙le.ho.ShivH3427themwith noblesנְדִיבִ֔יםne.di.VimH5081,And He givesH5157them a seatוְכִסֵּ֥אve.khi.Se'H3678of honorכָב֖וֹדkha.VodH3519asH5157anH5157inheritanceH5157;For the pillarsמְצֻ֣קֵיme.Tzu.keiH4690of the earthאֶ֔רֶץ'E.retzH776are the Lord’sלַֽיהוָה֙la.Yah.wehH3068,And He setוַיָּ֥שֶׁתvai.Ya.shetH7896the worldתֵּבֵֽל׃te.VelH8398on them.
10Those who contendמְרִיבָ֗יוme.ri.vovH7378with the Lordיְהוָ֞הYah.wehH3068will be terrifiedH2865;Againstעָלָיו֙a.lovH5921them He will thunderיַרְעֵ֔םyar.'EmH7481in the heavensבַּשָּׁמַ֣יִםba.sha.Ma.yimH8064,The Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068will judgeיָדִ֣יןya.DinH1777the endsאַפְסֵי־'af.sei-H657of the earthאָ֑רֶץ'A.retzH776;And He will giveוְיִתֶּן־ve.yi.ten-H5414strengthעֹ֣ז'ozH5797to His kingלְמַלְכּ֔וֹle.mal.KoH4428,And will exaltוְיָרֵ֖םve.ya.RemH7311thehornקֶ֥רֶןKe.renH7161of His anointedמְשִׁיחֽוֹ׃ פme.shi.ChoH4899.”
11Then Elkanahאֶלְקָנָ֛ה'el.ka.NahH511wentוַיֵּ֧לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980to his homeבֵּית֑וֹbei.ToH1004atRamahהָרָמָ֖תָהha.ra.Ma.tahH7414.But the boyוְהַנַּ֗עַרve.ha.Na.'arH5288continuedהָיָ֤הha.YahH1961to attendH8334toH8334the serviceH8334of the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068beforeפְּנֵ֖יpe.NeiH6440Eliעֵלִ֥י'e.LiH5941the priestהַכֹּהֵֽן׃ha.ko.HenH3548.
The Sin of Eli’s Sons
13And this wasthe customוּמִשְׁפַּ֥טu.mish.PatH4941of the priestsהַכֹּהֲנִ֖יםha.ko.ha.NimH3548with the peopleהָעָ֑םha.'AmH5971: whenanyoneכָּל־ אִ֞ישׁkol- 'ishH3605H376was offeringזֹבֵ֣חַzo.Ve.achH2076a sacrificeזֶ֗בַחZe.vachH2077,the priest’sהַכֹּהֵן֙ha.ko.HenH3548servantנַ֤עַרNa.'arH5288would comeוּבָ֨אu.Va'H935while the meatהַבָּשָׂ֔רha.ba.SarH1320was cookingכְּבַשֵּׁ֣לke.va.ShelH1310,with a three-prongedשְׁלֹ֥שׁ־ הַשִּׁנַּ֖יִםshe.Losh- ha.shi.Na.yimH7969H8127forkוְהַמַּזְלֵ֛גve.ha.maz.LegH4207in his handבְּיָדֽוֹ׃be.ya.DoH3027.
14And he would thrustוְהִכָּ֨הve.hi.KahH5221it into the panבַכִּיּ֜וֹרva.ki.YorH3595,orא֣וֹ'oH176kettleבַדּ֗וּדva.DudH1731,orא֤וֹ'oH176caldronבַקַּלַּ֙חַת֙va.ka.La.chatH7037,orא֣וֹ'oH176potבַפָּר֔וּרva.pa.RurH6517;everythingכֹּ֚לkolH3605that the forkהַמַּזְלֵ֔גha.maz.LegH4207broughtH5927upH5927,the priestהַכֹּהֵ֖ןha.ko.HenH3548would takeיִקַּ֥חyi.KachH3947for himself. They didיַעֲשׂ֣וּya.'a.SuH6213soכָּ֚כָהKa.khahH3602in Shilohבְּשִׁלֹֽה׃be.shi.LohH7887to allלְכָל־le.kholH3605the Israelitesיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478who cameהַבָּאִ֥יםha.ba.'ImH935thereשָׁ֖םshamH8033.
15Alsoגַּם֮gamH1571,beforeבְּטֶרֶם֮be.te.RemH2962theyburnedיַקְטִר֣וּןyak.ti.RunH6999the fatהַחֵלֶב֒ha.che.LevH2459,the priest’sהַכֹּהֵ֗ןha.ko.HenH3548servantנַ֣עַרNa.'arH5288would comeוּבָ֣א׀u.Va'H935and sayוְאָמַר֙ve.'a.MarH559to the manלָאִ֣ישׁla.'IshH376who was sacrificingהַזֹּבֵ֔חַha.zo.Ve.achH2076, “Giveתְּנָ֣הte.NahH5414the priestלַכֹּהֵ֑ןla.ko.HenH3548meatבָשָׂ֔רva.SarH1320for roastingלִצְל֖וֹתlitz.LotH6740,as he will not takeיִקַּ֧חyi.KachH3947cookedמְבֻשָּׁ֖לme.vu.ShalH1310meatבָּשָׂ֥רba.SarH1320from you, onlyכִּ֥י אִם־ki 'im-H3588H518rawחָֽי׃ChaiH2416.”
16And ifthe manהָאִ֗ישׁha.'IshH376saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “They mustקַטֵּ֨רka.TerH6999burnיַקְטִיר֤וּןyak.ti.RunH6999the fatהַחֵ֔לֶבha.Che.levH2459firstכַּיּוֹם֙kai.yOmH3117,then takeוְקַ֨ח־ve.Kach-H3947as muchH3512asH3512you desireתְּאַוֶּ֖הte.'a.VehH183,”then he would sayוְאָמַ֥ר׀ve.'a.MarH559, “NoH3808,but you must giveתִתֵּ֔ןti.TenH5414it to menowעַתָּ֣ה'a.TahH6258;and ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518not, I am takingלָקַ֥חְתִּיla.Kach.tiH3947it by forceבְחָזְקָֽה׃ve.cha.ze.KahH2394!”
17And sothe sinחַטַּ֧אתcha.TatH2403of the youngהַנְּעָרִ֛יםha.ne.'a.RimH5288menH5288was veryמְאֹ֖דme.'OdH3966greatגְּדוֹלָ֥הge.do.LahH1419beforeפְּנֵ֣יpe.NeiH6440the Lordיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068,for the menH376treatedH5006the offeringמִנְחַ֥תmin.ChatH4503of the Lordיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068disrespectfullyH5006.
Samuel before the Lord as a Boy
19And his motherאִמּ֔וֹ'i.MoH517would makeתַּעֲשֶׂה־ta.'a.seh-H6213for him a littleקָטֹן֙ka.TonH6996robeוּמְעִ֤ילu.me.'IlH4598and bringH5927it upH5927to him from yearמִיָּמִ֣ים׀mi.ya.MimH3117to yearיָמִ֑ימָהya.Mi.mahH3117when she would comeH5927upH5927with her husbandאִישָׁ֔הּ'i.ShahH376to offerלִזְבֹּ֖חַliz.Bo.achH2076the yearlyהַיָּמִֽים׃hai.ya.MimH3117sacrificeזֶ֥בַחZe.vachH2077.
20Then Eliעֵלִ֜י'e.LiH5941wouldblessוּבֵרַ֨ךְu.ve.RakhH1288Elkanahאֶלְקָנָ֣ה'el.ka.NahH511and his wifeאִשְׁתּ֗וֹ'ish.ToH802,and sayוְאָמַר֙ve.'a.MarH559, “May the Lordיְהוָ֨הYah.wehH3068giveיָשֵׂם֩ya.SemH7760youchildrenזֶ֙רַע֙ze.ra'H2233from thisH2088womanהָאִשָּׁ֣הha.'i.ShahH802inH8478placeתַּ֚חַתTa.chatH8478ofH8478theoneהַשְּׁאֵלָ֔הha.she.'e.LahH7596sherequestedשָׁאַ֖לsha.'AlH7592of the Lordלַֽיהוָ֑הla.Yah.wehH3068.”And they wentוְהָלְכ֖וּve.ha.le.KhuH1980to their ownhomeלִמְקֹמֽוֹ׃lim.ko.MoH4725.
21The Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068indeedכִּֽי־ki-H3588visitedפָקַ֤דfa.KadH6485Hannahחַנָּ֔הcha.NahH2584,and she conceivedוַתַּ֛הַרva.Ta.harH2029and gaveH3205birthH3205to threeשְׁלֹשָֽׁה־she.lo.shah-H7969sonsבָנִ֖יםva.NimH1121and twoוּשְׁתֵּ֣יu.she.TeiH8147daughtersבָנ֑וֹתva.NotH1323. Andthe boyהַנַּ֥עַרha.Na.'arH5288Samuelשְׁמוּאֵ֖לshe.mu.'ElH8050grewH1431upH1431beforeעִם־'im-H5973the Lordיְהוָֽה׃ סYah.wehH3068.
Eli Rebukes His Sons
22Now Eliוְעֵלִ֖יve.'e.LiH5941wasH2204veryמְאֹ֑דme.'OdH3966oldזָקֵ֣ןza.KenH2204;and he heardוְשָׁמַ֗עve.sha.Ma'H8085abouteverythingכָּל־kol-H3605that his sonsבָּנָיו֙ba.NavH1121were doingיַעֲשׂ֤וּןya.'a.SunH6213to allלְכָל־le.kholH3605Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478,and that they sleptיִשְׁכְּבוּן֙yish.ke.VunH7901withthe womenהַנָּשִׁ֔יםha.na.ShimH802who servedהַצֹּ֣בְא֔וֹתha.Tzoe.'otH6633at the doorwayפֶּ֖תַחPe.tachH6607of the tentאֹ֥הֶל'O.helH168of meetingמוֹעֵֽד׃mo.'EdH4150.
23So he saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to them, “Whyלָ֥מָּהLa.mahH4100are you doingתַעֲשׂ֖וּןta.'a.SunH6213suchH428thingsכַּדְּבָרִ֣יםka.de.va.RimH1697as theseH428,the evilרָעִ֔יםra.'ImH7451thingsדִּבְרֵיכֶ֣םdiv.rei.KhemH1697that I hearשֹׁמֵ֙עַ֙sho.Me.a'H8085from allכָּל־kol-H3605theseH428peopleהָעָ֥םha.'AmH5971?
25Ifאִם־'im-H518one personאִ֤ישׁ'ishH376sinsיֶחֱטָ֨אye.che.Ta'H2398against anotherלְאִישׁ֙le.'IshH376,Godאֱלֹהִ֔ים'E.lo.HimH430will mediateוּפִֽלְל֣וֹu.fi.LoH6419for him; butifוְאִ֤םve.'ImH518a personאִ֔ישׁ'IshH376sinsיֶֽחֱטָא־ye.che.ta'-H2398against the Lordלַֽיהוָה֙la.Yah.wehH3068,whoמִ֖יmiH4310can intercedeיִתְפַּלֶּל־yit.pa.lel-H6419for him?” But they would not listenיִשְׁמְעוּ֙yish.me.'UH8085to the voiceלְק֣וֹלle.KolH6963of their fatherאֲבִיהֶ֔ם'a.vi.HemH1, for theLordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068desiredחָפֵ֥ץcha.FetzH2654to putלַהֲמִיתָֽם׃la.ha.mi.TamH4191them toH4191deathH4191.
27Thena manאִישׁ־'ish-H376of Godאֱלֹהִ֖ים'E.lo.HimH430cameוַיָּבֹ֥אvai.ya.Vo'H935to Eliעֵלִ֑י'e.LiH5941and saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “ThisH3541isH3541whatH3541the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068saysאָמַ֣ר'a.MarH559: ‘Did I notindeedהֲנִגְלֹ֤הha.nig.LohH1540revealנִגְלֵ֙יתִי֙nig.Lei.tiH1540Myself to the houseבֵּ֣יתbeitH1004of your fatherאָבִ֔יךָ'a.Vi.khaH1when they were in Egyptבְּמִצְרַ֖יִםbe.mitz.Ra.yimH4714in bondageto Pharaoh’sפַּרְעֹֽה׃par.'OhH6547houseלְבֵ֥יתle.VeitH1004?
28Did I notchooseוּבָחֹ֣רu.va.ChorH977them from allמִכָּל־mi.kolH3605the tribesשִׁבְטֵ֨יshiv.TeiH7626of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֥לYis.ra.'ElH3478to be My priestsלְכֹהֵ֔ןle.kho.HenH3548,to goלַעֲל֣וֹתla.'a.LotH5927upH5927to My altarמִזְבְּחִ֗יmiz.be.ChiH4196,to burnלְהַקְטִ֥ירle.hak.TirH6999incenseקְטֹ֛רֶתke.To.retH7004,to carryלָשֵׂ֥אתla.SetH5375an ephodאֵפ֖וֹד'e.FodH646beforeלְפָנָ֑יle.fa.NaiH6440Me? And did I notgiveוָֽאֶתְּנָה֙va.'e.te.NahH5414to the houseלְבֵ֣יתle.VeitH1004of your fatherאָבִ֔יךָ'a.Vi.khaH1allכָּל־kol-H3605the fireאִשֵּׁ֖י'i.SheiH801offeringsof the sonsבְּנֵ֥יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃Yis.ra.'ElH3478?
29Whyלָ֣מָּהLa.mahH4100are youshowingH1163contemptH1163for My sacrificeבְּזִבְחִי֙be.ziv.ChiH2077and My offeringוּבְמִנְחָתִ֔יu.ve.min.cha.TiH4503whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834I have commandedצִוִּ֖יתִיtzi.Vi.tiH6680for Mydwellingמָע֑וֹןma.'onH4583, and why are youhonoringוַתְּכַבֵּ֤דva.te.kha.BedH3513your sonsבָּנֶ֙יךָ֙ba.Nei.khaH1121aboveמִמֶּ֔נִּיmi.Me.niH4480Me, by makingH1254yourselves fatH1254with thechoicestמֵרֵאשִׁ֛יתme.re.ShitH7225of everyכָּל־kol-H3605offeringמִנְחַ֥תmin.ChatH4503of My peopleלְעַמִּֽי׃le.'a.MiH5971Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478?’
30Thereforeלָכֵ֗ןla.KhenH3651the Lordיְהוָה֮Yah.wehH3068Godאֱלֹהֵ֣י'e.lo.HeiH430of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵל֒Yis.ra.'ElH3478declaresנְאֻם־ne.'um-H5002, ‘I did indeedאָמ֣וֹר'a.MorH559sayאָמַ֔רְתִּי'a.Mar.tiH559that your houseבֵּֽיתְךָ֙bei.te.KhaH1004and the houseוּבֵ֣יתu.VeitH1004of your fatherאָבִ֔יךָ'a.Vi.khaH1was to walkיִתְהַלְּכ֥וּyit.ha.le.KhuH1980beforeלְפָנַ֖יle.fa.NaiH6440Me foreverעַד־ עוֹלָ֑ם'ad- o.LamH5704H5769’;but nowוְעַתָּ֤הve.'a.TahH6258the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068declaresנְאֻם־ne.'um-H5002, ‘Farחָלִ֣ילָהcha.Li.lahH2486be it from Me--forthose who honorמְכַבְּדַ֥יme.kha.be.DaiH3513Me I will honorאֲכַבֵּ֖ד'a.kha.BedH3513, and thosewho despiseוּבֹזַ֥יu.vo.ZaiH959Me will beH7043insignificantיֵקָֽלּוּ׃ye.Ka.luH7043.
31Beholdהִנֵּה֙hi.NehH2009,the daysיָמִ֣יםya.MimH3117are comingבָּאִ֔יםba.'ImH935when I will eliminateוְגָֽדַעְתִּי֙ve.ga.da'.TiH1438yourstrengthזְרֹ֣עֲךָ֔ze.Ro.'a.khaH2220and thestrengthזְרֹ֖עַze.Ro.a'H2220of your father’sאָבִ֑יךָ'a.Vi.khaH1houseבֵּ֣יתbeitH1004,soH4480thatH4480there will notH4480be an oldזָקֵ֖ןza.KenH2205manH2205in your houseבְּבֵיתֶֽךָ׃be.vei.Te.khaH1004.
32And you will lookוְהִבַּטְתָּ֙ve.hib.ba.TaH5027atthe distressצַ֣רtzarH6862of Mydwellingמָע֔וֹןma.'onH4583, in spite ofallבְּכֹ֥לbe.KholH3605the goodיֵיטִ֖יבyei.TivH3190thatI doH3190for Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478;and there will neverוְלֹֽא־ כָּל־ הַיָּמִֽים׃ve.lo'- kol- hai.ya.MimH3808H3605H3117be anoldזָקֵ֛ןza.KenH2205manH2205in your houseבְּבֵיתְךָ֖be.vei.te.KhaH1004.
33Yet I will not cutאַכְרִ֤ית'akh.RitH3772offH3772everyH376manוְאִ֗ישׁve.'IshH376of yours from My altarמִזְבְּחִ֔יmiz.be.ChiH4196,so that your eyesעֵינֶ֖יךָ'ei.Nei.khaH5869will failלְכַלּ֥וֹתle.kha.LotH3615from weepingand your soulנַפְשֶׁ֑ךָnaf.She.khaH5315grieveוְלַאֲדִ֣יבve.la.'a.DivH109,and allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605theincreaseמַרְבִּ֥יתmar.BitH4768of your houseבֵּיתְךָ֖bei.te.KhaH1004will dieיָמ֥וּתוּya.Mu.tuH4191in the primeH376of lifeH376.
34And thisוְזֶה־ve.zeh-H2088will bethe signהָא֗וֹתha.'otH226to you whichאֲשֶׁ֤ר'a.SherH834will comeיָבֹא֙ya.Vo'H935inH413regardH413toH413your twoשְׁנֵ֣יshe.NeiH8147sonsבָנֶ֔יךָva.Nei.khaH1121,Hophniחָפְנִ֖יcha.fe.NiH2652and Phinehasוּפִֽינְחָ֑סu.fin.ChasH6372:on the sameאֶחָ֖ד'e.ChadH259dayבְּי֥וֹםbe.YomH3117bothשְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃she.nei.HemH8147of them will dieיָמ֥וּתוּya.Mu.tuH4191.
35ButI will raiseוַהֲקִימֹתִ֥יva.ha.ki.mo.TiH6965upH6965for Myself a faithfulנֶאֱמָ֔ןne.'e.ManH539priestכֹּהֵ֣ןko.HenH3548who will doיַעֲשֶׂ֑הya.'a.SehH6213according to whatכַּאֲשֶׁ֛רka.'a.SherH834is in My heartבִּלְבָבִ֥יbil.va.ViH3824and My soulוּבְנַפְשִׁ֖יu.ve.naf.ShiH5315; andI will buildוּבָנִ֤יתִיu.va.Ni.tiH1129him an enduringנֶאֱמָ֔ןne.'e.ManH539houseבַּ֣יִתBa.yitH1004,and he will walkוְהִתְהַלֵּ֥ךְve.ht.ha.LekhH1980beforeלִפְנֵֽי־lif.nei-H6440My anointedמְשִׁיחִ֖יme.shi.ChiH4899alwaysכָּל־ הַיָּמִֽים׃kol- hai.ya.MimH3605H3117.
36And everyoneכָּל־kol-H3605who is leftהַנּוֹתָר֙ha.no.TarH3498in your houseבְּבֵ֣יתְךָ֔be.Vei.te.khaH1004will comeיָבוֹא֙ya.Vo'H935to bowH2331downH2331to him for asilverכֶּ֖סֶףKe.sefH3701coinלַאֲג֥וֹרַתla.'a.Go.ratH95or a loafוְכִכַּר־ve.khi.kar-H3603of breadלָ֑חֶםLa.chemH3899and sayוְאָמַ֗רve.'a.MarH559, “Pleaseנָ֛אna'H4994assignסְפָחֵ֥נִיse.fa.Che.niH5596me to oneאַחַ֥ת'a.ChatH259of the priest’sH3550officesH3550so that I may eatלֶאֱכֹ֥לle.'e.KholH398a pieceפַּת־pat-H6595of breadלָֽחֶם׃ סLa.chemH3899.”’”
