2Then the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּ֜יםfe.lish.TimH6430drewH6186upH6186inH6186battleH6186formationH6186to meetלִקְרַ֣אתlik.RatH7122Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֗לYis.ra.'ElH3478.When the battleהַמִּלְחָמָ֔הha.mil.cha.MahH4421spreadוַתִּטֹּשׁ֙va.ti.ToshH5203,Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478wasdefeatedוַיִּנָּ֥גֶףvai.yi.Na.gefH5062by the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּ֑יםfe.lish.TimH6430,who killedוַיַּכּ֤וּvai.ya.KuH5221about fourכְּאַרְבַּ֥עַתke.'ar.Ba.'atH702thousandאֲלָפִ֖ים'a.la.FimH505menאִֽישׁ׃'IshH376on the battlefieldבַמַּֽעֲרָכָה֙ בַּשָּׂדֶ֔הva.ma.'a.ra.Khah ba.sa.DehH4634H7704.
3When the peopleהָעָם֮ha.'AmH5971cameוַיָּבֹ֣אvai.ya.Vo'H935into the campהַֽמַּחֲנֶה֒ha.ma.cha.NehH4264,the eldersזִקְנֵ֣יzik.NeiH2205of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478saidוַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙vai.yo.me.RuH559, “Whyלָ֣מָּהLa.mahH4100has the Lordיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068defeatedנְגָפָ֧נוּne.ga.Fa.nuH5062us todayהַיּ֖וֹםhai.YomH3117beforeלִפְנֵ֣יlif.NeiH6440the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּ֑יםfe.lish.TimH6430?Let’s takeנִקְחָ֧הnik.ChahH3947the arkאֲרוֹן֙'a.rOnH727of the covenantבְּרִ֣יתbe.RitH1285of the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068from Shilohמִשִּׁלֹ֗הmi.shi.LohH7887,so that He may comeוְיָבֹ֣אve.ya.Vo'H935amongבְקִרְבֵּ֔נוּve.kir.Be.nuH7130us and saveוְיֹשִׁעֵ֖נוּve.yo.shi.'E.nuH3467us from the powerמִכַּ֥ףmi.KafH3709of our enemiesH340.”
4So the peopleהָעָם֙ha.'AmH5971sentוַיִּשְׁלַ֤חvai.yish.LachH7971mento Shilohשִׁלֹ֔הshi.LohH7887,and from thereמִשָּׁ֗םmi.ShamH8033they carriedוַיִּשְׂא֣וּvai.yis.'UH5375the arkאֲר֧וֹן'a.RonH727of the covenantבְּרִית־be.rit-H1285of the Lordיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068of armiesצְבָא֖וֹתtze.va.'otH6635who isH3427enthronedH3427abovethe cherubimהַכְּרֻבִ֑יםha.ke.ru.VimH3742;and the twoשְׁנֵ֣יshe.NeiH8147sonsבְנֵֽי־ve.nei-H1121of Eliעֵלִ֗י'e.LiH5941,Hophniחָפְנִ֖יcha.fe.NiH2652and Phinehasוּפִֽינְחָֽס׃u.Fi.ne.ChasH6372, werethereוְשָׁ֞םve.ShamH8033with the arkאֲרוֹן֙'a.rOnH727of the covenantבְּרִ֣יתbe.RitH1285of Godהָאֱלֹהִ֔יםha.'E.lo.HimH430.
5And as the arkאֲר֤וֹן'a.RonH727of the covenantבְּרִית־be.rit-H1285of the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068was comingכְּב֨וֹאke.Vo'H935into the campהַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔הha.ma.cha.NehH4264,allכָל־khol-H3605Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478shoutedוַיָּרִ֥עוּvai.ya.Ri.'uH7321with a greatגְדוֹלָ֑הge.do.LahH1419shoutתְּרוּעָ֣הte.ru.'AhH8643,so that the earthהָאָֽרֶץ׃ha.'A.retzH776resoundedוַתֵּהֹ֖םva.te.HomH1949.
6And when the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּים֙fe.lish.TimH6430heardוַיִּשְׁמְע֤וּvai.yish.me.'UH8085the noiseק֣וֹלKolH6963of the shoutהַתְּרוּעָ֔הha.te.ru.'AhH8643,they saidוַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּvai.Yo.me.RuH559, “Whatמֶ֠הmehH4100doesthe noiseק֣וֹלKolH6963of thisH2088greatהַגְּדוֹלָ֛הha.ge.do.LahH1419shoutהַתְּרוּעָ֧הha.te.ru.'AhH8643in the campבְּמַחֲנֵ֣הbe.ma.cha.NehH4264of the Hebrewsהָעִבְרִ֑יםha.'iv.RimH5680mean?”Then they understoodוַיֵּ֣דְע֔וּvai.Ye.de.'UH3045that the arkאֲר֣וֹן'a.RonH727of the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068had comeבָּ֖אba'H935into the campהַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃Ha.ma.cha.NehH4264.
7So the Philistinesהַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔יםha.pe.lish.TimH6430wereH3372afraidוַיִּֽרְאוּ֙vai.yir.'UH3372,for they saidאָמְר֔וּ'a.me.RuH559, “Godאֱלֹהִ֖ים'E.lo.HimH430has comeבָּ֥אba'H935into the campהַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑הha.ma.cha.NehH4264!”And they saidוַיֹּאמְרוּ֙vai.yo.me.RuH559, “Woeא֣וֹי'oH188to us! For nothingלֹ֥אlo'H3808like thisH2088has happenedהָיְתָ֛הha.ye.TahH1961beforeשִׁלְשֹֽׁם׃shil.ShomH8543H8032.
8Woeא֣וֹי'oH188to us! Whoמִ֣יmiH4310will saveיַצִּילֵ֔נוּya.tzi.Le.nuH5337us from the handמִיַּ֛דmi.YadH3027of theseהָאֵ֑לֶּהha.'E.lehH428mightyהָאַדִּירִ֖יםha.'a.di.RimH117godsהָאֱלֹהִ֥יםha.'E.lo.HimH430?Theseאֵ֧לֶּה'E.lehH428are the godsהָאֱלֹהִ֗יםha.'E.lo.HimH430who struckהַמַּכִּ֧יםha.ma.KimH5221the Egyptiansמִצְרַ֛יִםmitz.Ra.yimH4714with allבְּכָל־be.kholH3605kinds ofplaguesמַכָּ֖הma.KahH4347in the wildernessבַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ba.mid.BarH4057.
10So the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּ֗יםfe.lish.TimH6430foughtוַיִּלָּחֲמ֣וּvai.yi.la.cha.MuH3898andIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵל֙Yis.ra.'ElH3478was defeatedוַיִּנָּ֤גֶףvai.yi.Na.gefH5062, andeveryH376manאִ֣ישׁ'ishH376fledוַיָּנֻ֙סוּ֙vai.ya.Nu.suH5127to his tentלְאֹהָלָ֔יוle.'o.ha.LavH168;and the defeatהַמַּכָּ֖הha.ma.KahH4347was veryמְאֹ֑דme.'OdH3966greatגְּדוֹלָ֣הge.do.LahH1419,for thirtyשְׁלֹשִׁ֥יםshe.lo.ShimH7970thousandאֶ֖לֶף'E.lefH505footרַגְלִֽי׃rag.LiH7273soldiersH7273of Israelמִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֔לmi.Yis.ra.'ElH3478fellוַיִּפֹּל֙vai.yi.PolH5307.
12Now a manאִישׁ־'ish-H376of Benjaminבִּנְיָמִן֙bin.ya.MinH1144ranוַיָּ֤רָץvai.Ya.rotzH7323from the battleמֵהַמַּ֣עֲרָכָ֔הme.ha.Ma.'a.ra.KhahH4634lineH4634and cameוַיָּבֹ֥אvai.ya.Vo'H935to Shilohשִׁלֹ֖הshi.LohH7887the sameהַה֑וּאha.Hu'H1931dayבַּיּ֣וֹםbai.YomH3117withhis clothesוּמַדָּ֣יוu.ma.DavH4055tornקְרֻעִ֔יםke.ru.'ImH7167, anddustוַאֲדָמָ֖הva.'a.da.MahH127on his headרֹאשֽׁוֹ׃ro.ShoH7218.
13When he cameוַיָּב֗וֹאvai.ya.Vo'H935,beholdוְהִנֵּ֣הve.hi.NehH2009,Eliעֵ֠לִי'E.liH5941was sittingיֹשֵׁ֨בyo.ShevH3427on hisseatהַכִּסֵּ֜אha.ki.Se'H3678by the roadדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙de.rekhH1870keepingH6822watchמְצַפֶּ֔הme.tza.PehH6822,becauseכִּֽי־ki-H3588his heartלִבּוֹ֙li.BoH3820was anxiousחָרֵ֔דcha.RedH2730aboutH5921the arkאֲר֣וֹן'a.RonH727of Godהָאֱלֹהִ֑יםha.'E.lo.HimH430.And the manוְהָאִ֗ישׁve.ha.'IshH376cameבָּ֚אba'H935to giveH5046aH5046reportH5046in the cityבָּעִ֔ירba.'IrH5892,and allכָּל־kol-H3605the cityהָעִֽיר׃ha.'IrH5892criedH2199outH2199.
14When Eliעֵלִי֙'e.LiH5941heardוַיִּשְׁמַ֤עvai.yish.Ma'H8085the noiseק֣וֹלKolH6963of the outcryהַצְּעָקָ֔הha.tze.'a.KahH6818,he saidוַיֹּ֕אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Whatמֶ֛הmehH4100doesthe noiseק֥וֹלKolH6963of thisהַזֶּ֑הha.ZehH2088commotionהֶהָמ֖וֹןhe.ha.MonH1995mean?”Then the manוְהָאִ֣ישׁve.ha.'IshH376cameוַיָּבֹ֖אvai.ya.Vo'H935hurriedlyמִהַ֔רmi.HarH4116and toldוַיַּגֵּ֥דvai.ya.GedH5046Eliלְעֵלִֽי׃le.'e.LiH5941.
16The manהָאִ֜ישׁha.'IshH376saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Eliעֵלִ֗י'e.LiH5941, “I am the one who cameהַבָּ֣אha.Ba'H935from the battleהַמַּעֲרָכָ֔הha.ma.'a.ra.KhahH4634lineהַמַּעֲרָכָ֖הha.ma.'a.ra.KhahH4634.Indeed, I escapedנַ֣סְתִּיNas.tiH5127from the battleH4634lineH4634todayהַיּ֑וֹםhai.YomH3117.”And he saidוַיֹּ֛אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Howמֶֽה־meh-H4100are thingsהַדָּבָ֖רha.da.VarH1697,my sonבְּנִֽי׃be.NiH1121?”
17Then the one who broughtH1319the newsהַֽמְבַשֵּׂ֜רham.va.SerH1319repliedוַיַּ֨עַןvai.Ya.'anH6030, “Israelיִשְׂרָאֵל֙Yis.ra.'ElH3478has fledנָ֤סnasH5127beforeלִפְנֵ֣יlif.NeiH6440the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּ֔יםfe.lish.TimH6430and there has alsoוְגַ֛םve.GamH1571beenהָיְתָ֣הha.ye.TahH1961a greatגְדוֹלָ֖הge.do.LahH1419defeatמַגֵּפָ֥הma.ge.FahH4046among the peopleבָעָ֑םva.'AmH5971,and your twoשְׁנֵ֨יshe.NeiH8147sonsבָנֶ֜יךָva.Nei.khaH1121,Hophniחָפְנִי֙cha.fe.NiH2652and Phinehasוּפִ֣ינְחָ֔סu.Fin.ChasH6372are alsoוְגַם־ve.gam-H1571deadמֵ֗תוּMe.tuH4191;and the arkוַאֲר֥וֹןva.'a.RonH727of Godהָאֱלֹהִ֖יםha.'E.lo.HimH430has been takenנִלְקָֽחָה׃ פnil.Ka.chahH3947.”
18When he mentionedכְּהַזְכִּיר֣וֹ׀ke.haz.ki.RoH2142the arkאֲר֣וֹן'a.RonH727of Godהָאֱלֹהִ֗יםha.'E.lo.HimH430,Eli fellוַיִּפֹּ֣לvai.yi.PolH5307offמֵֽעַל־me.'al-H4480H5921the seatהַ֠כִּסֵּאHa.ki.se'H3678backwardאֲחֹ֨רַנִּ֜ית'a.Cho.ra.NitH322besideיַ֣דyadH5704H3027the gateהַשַּׁ֗עַרha.Sha.'arH8179,and his neckמַפְרַקְתּוֹ֙maf.rak.ToH4665was brokenוַתִּשָּׁבֵ֤רva.ti.sha.VerH7665and he diedוַיָּמֹ֔תvai.ya.MotH4191, forhe wasH2204oldזָקֵ֥ןza.KenH2204and heavyוְכָבֵ֑דve.kha.VedH3515. And sohe judgedשָׁפַ֥טsha.FatH8199Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478for fortyאַרְבָּעִ֥ים'ar.ba.'ImH705yearsשָׁנָֽה׃sha.NahH8141.
19Now his daughter-in-lawוְכַלָּת֣וֹve.kha.la.ToH3618,Phinehas’פִּינְחָס֮pi.ne.ChasH6372wifeאֵֽשֶׁת־'e.shet-H802,was pregnantהָרָ֣הha.RahH2030and aboutto giveלָלַת֒la.LatH3205birthוַתֵּ֔לֶדva.Te.ledH3205;and when she heardוַתִּשְׁמַ֣עva.tish.Ma'H8085the newsהַשְּׁמֻעָ֔הha.she.mu.'AhH8052that the arkאֲר֣וֹן'a.RonH727of Godהָאֱלֹהִ֔יםha.'E.lo.HimH430had been takenהִלָּקַח֙hi.la.KachH3947and that her father-in-lawחָמִ֖יהָcha.Mi.haH2524and her husbandוְאִישָׁ֑הּve.'i.ShahH376had diedוּמֵ֥תu.MetH4191,she kneeledH3766downוַתִּכְרַ֣עva.tikh.Ra'H3766and gaveH3205birthH3205,becauseכִּֽי־ki-H3588her painsצִרֶֽיהָ׃tzi.Rei.haH6735cameנֶהֶפְכ֥וּne.hef.KhuH2015upon her.
20And about the timeוּכְעֵ֣תu.khe.'EtH6256of her deathמוּתָ֗הּmu.TahH4191the women who were standingהַנִּצָּב֣וֹתha.ni.tza.VotH5324by her saidוַתְּדַבֵּ֙רְנָה֙va.te.da.Be.re.nahH1696to her, “Do not beH3372afraidתִּֽירְאִ֖יtir.'IH3372,for you have givenH3205birthH3205to a sonבֵ֣ןvenH1121.”But she did not answerעָנְתָ֖ה'a.ne.TahH6030or payשָׁ֥תָהSha.tahH7896attentionלִבָּֽהּ׃li.BahH3820.
21And she namedוַתִּקְרָ֣אva.tik.Ra'H7121the boyלַנַּ֗עַרla.Na.'arH5288IchabodH350,sayingלֵאמֹ֔רle.MorH559, “The gloryכָב֖וֹדkha.VodH3519has departedגָּלָ֥הga.LahH1540from Israelמִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֑לmi.Yis.ra.'ElH3478,”becauseאֶל־'el-H413the arkאֲר֣וֹן'a.RonH727of Godהָאֱלֹהִ֔יםha.'E.lo.HimH430had been takenהִלָּקַח֙hi.la.KachH3947and becauseוְאֶל־ve.'el-H413of her father-in-lawחָמִ֖יהָcha.Mi.haH2524and her husbandוְאִישָֽׁהּ׃ve.'i.ShahH376.
