1Then Davidדָוִד֙da.VidH1732cameH935toNobנֹ֔בֶהNoehH5011,to Ahimelechאֲחִימֶ֖לֶךְ'a.chi.Me.lekhH288the priestהַכֹּהֵ֑ןha.ko.HenH3548;and Ahimelechאֲחִימֶ֜לֶךְ'a.chi.Me.lekhH288cameH2729tremblingH2729to meetלִקְרַ֣אתlik.RatH7122Davidדָּוִ֗דda.VidH1732and saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “Whyמַדּ֤וּעַma.Du.a'H4069are you aloneלְבַדֶּ֔ךָle.va.De.khaH905,and noאֵ֥ין'einH369oneוְאִ֖ישׁve.'IshH376with you?”
2DavidH1732saidH559to AhimelechH288the priestH3548, “The kingהַמֶּלֶךְ֮ha.me.leKhH4428has commissionedצִוַּ֣נִיtzi.Va.niH6680me with a matterדָבָר֒da.VarH1697and has saidH559to me, ‘Noאַל־'al-H408oneH376is to knowיֵ֧דַעYe.da'H3045anythingמְא֛וּמָהme.'U.mahH3972about the matterהַדָּבָ֛רha.da.VarH1697on whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834I am sendingשֹׁלֵֽחֲךָ֖sho.le.cha.KhaH7971you and with whichוַאֲשֶׁ֣רva.'a.SherH834I have commissionedצִוִּיתִ֑ךָtzi.vi.Ti.khaH6680you; and I have directedיוֹדַ֔עְתִּיyo.Da'.tiH3045the youngהַנְּעָרִ֣יםha.ne.'a.RimH5288menH5288to a certainפְּלֹנִ֖י אַלְמוֹנִֽי׃pe.lo.Ni 'al.mo.NiH492H6423placeמְק֥וֹםme.KomH4725.’
4The priestהַכֹּהֵ֤ןha.ko.HenH3548answeredוַיַּ֨עַןvai.Ya.'anH6030Davidדָּוִד֙da.VidH1732and saidוַיֹּ֔אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “ThereH369isH369noH369ordinaryחֹ֖לcholH2455breadH3899on handH3027,but thereיֵּ֧שׁyeshH3426isיֵ֔שׁYeshH3426consecratedקֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ko.deshH6944breadH3899,ifH518onlyאַ֥ךְ'akhH389the youngהַנְּעָרִ֖יםha.ne.'a.RimH5288menH5288havekeptנִשְׁמְר֥וּnish.me.RuH8104themselves from womenמֵאִשָּֽׁה׃ פme.'i.ShahH802.”
5DavidH1732answeredH6030the priestH3548and saidH559to him, “BeH3588H518assuredH3588H518,womenH802have been deniedעֲצֻֽרָה־'a.tzu.rah-H6113to us as previouslyכִּתְמ֣וֹל שִׁלְשֹׁ֔םkit.Mol shil.ShomH8543H8032when I leftבְּצֵאתִ֕יbe.tze.TiH3318and thebodiesכְלֵֽי־khe.lei-H3627of the youngהַנְּעָרִ֖יםha.ne.'a.RimH5288menהַנְּעָרִ֖יםha.ne.'a.RimH5288were consecratedH6944,though it was an ordinaryH2455journeyדֶּ֣רֶךְDe.rekhH1870;howH637muchH637H3588moreH637H3588then willtheir bodiesבַּכֶּֽלִי׃ba.Ke.liH3627be consecratedיִקְדַּ֥שׁyik.DashH6942todayהַיּ֖וֹםhai.YomH3117?”
6Sothe priestH3548gaveוַיִּתֶּן־vai.yi.ten-H5414him consecratedH6944bread;for there was noלֹא־lo'-H3808breadלֶ֗חֶםLe.chemH3899thereשָׁ֜םshamH8033exceptH3588H518thebreadלֶ֤חֶםLe.chemH3899of the Presenceהַפָּנִים֙ha.pa.NimH6440which was removedהַמּֽוּסָרִים֙ha.mu.sa.RimH5493from its placebeforeמִלִּפְנֵ֣יmi.lif.NeiH6440the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068,in order to putלָשׂוּם֙la.SumH7760hotחֹ֔םChomH2527breadלֶ֣חֶםLe.chemH3899in its placeon the dayH3117it was takenהִלָּקְחֽוֹ׃hi.la.ke.ChoH3947away.
7Now oneאִישׁ֩'ishH376of the servantsמֵעַבְדֵ֨יme.'av.DeiH5650of Saulשָׁא֜וּלsha.'UlH7586was thereH8033that dayH3117,detainedנֶעְצָר֙ne'.TzarH6113beforeH6440the LordH3068;and his nameוּשְׁמ֖וֹu.she.MoH8034wasDoegדֹּאֵ֣גdo.'EgH1673the Edomiteהָאֲדֹמִ֑יha.'a.do.MiH130, thechiefאַבִּ֥יר'a.BirH47of Saul’sלְשָׁאֽוּל׃le.sha.'UlH7586shepherdsהָרֹעִ֖יםha.ro.'ImH7462.
8Davidדָּוִד֙da.VidH1732saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Ahimelechלַאֲחִימֶ֔לֶךְla.'a.chi.Me.lekhH288, “Now isH3426thereH3426noוְאִ֛יןve.'InH371spearחֲנִ֣יתcha.NitH2595orאוֹ־'ov-H176swordחָ֑רֶבCha.revH2719on handH3027?For I broughtלָקַ֣חְתִּיla.Kach.tiH3947neitherגַם־ לֹֽא־gam- lo'-H1571H3808my swordחַרְבִּ֤יchar.BiH2719norוְגַם־ve.gam-H1571my weaponsכֵּלַי֙ke.LaiH3627with me, becauseH3588the king’sהַמֶּ֖לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428matterדְבַר־de.var-H1697was urgentנָחֽוּץ׃ סna.ChutzH5169.”
9Then the priestהַכֹּהֵ֗ןha.ko.HenH3548saidH559, “The swordH2719of Goliathגָּלְיָ֨תgal.YatH1555the Philistineהַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֜יha.pe.lish.TiH6430,whomאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834youkilledהִכִּ֣יתָ׀hi.Ki.taH5221in the Valleyבְּעֵ֣מֶקbe.'E.mekH6010of ElahH424,beholdהִנֵּה־hi.neh-H2009,it is wrappedלוּטָ֣הlu.TahH3874in a clothבַשִּׂמְלָה֮va.sim.LahH8071behindאַחֲרֵ֣י'a.cha.ReiH310the ephodהָאֵפוֹד֒ha.'e.fOdH646;ifאִם־'im-H518you would takeH3947it for yourself, takeH3947it.For thereH369isH369noH369otherאַחֶ֛רֶת'a.Che.retH312exceptזוּלָתָ֖הּzu.la.TahH2108it hereבָּזֶ֑הba.ZehH2088.”And DavidH1732saidH559, “ThereH369isH369noneH369likeכָּמ֖וֹהָka.Mo.haH3644it; giveתְּנֶ֥נָּהte.Ne.nahH5414it to me.”
11But theservantsעַבְדֵ֤י'av.DeiH5650of AchishH397saidוַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּvai.Yo.me.RuH559to him, “Is thisH2088not DavidH1732,the kingH4428of the landהָאָ֑רֶץha.'A.retzH776?Did they not singH6031of thisH2088oneH2088as they dancedבַמְּחֹלוֹת֙va.me.cho.lOtH4246,sayingלֵאמֹ֔רle.MorH559, ‘SaulH7586has slainהִכָּ֤הhi.KahH5221his thousandsבַּאֲלָפָ֔יוba.'a.la.fovH505,And DavidH1732his tenH7233thousandsבְּרִבְבֹתָֽיו׃be.ri.vo.TavH7233’?”
13So hedisguisedH8132his sanityטַעְמוֹ֙ta'.MoH2940whilein their sightבְּעֵ֣ינֵיהֶ֔םbe.'Ei.nei.HemH5869and actedH1984insanelyH1984in theircustodyבְּיָדָ֑םbe.ya.DamH3027,and he scribbledוַיְתָיו֙vay.tavH8427on the doorsדַּלְת֣וֹתdal.TotH1817of the gateהַשַּׁ֔עַרha.Sha.'arH8179,and drooledוַיּ֥וֹרֶד רִיר֖וֹvai.Yo.red ri.RoH3381H7388on his beardזְקָנֽוֹ׃ze.ka.NoH2206.
