Judges 8
Darby Bible
1And the menH376 of EphraimH669 saidH559 to him, What is this thingH1697 thou hast done to us, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fightH3898 with MidianH4080? And they disputed with him sharply. 2And he saidH559 to them, What have I done nowH6258 in comparison with you? Are not the gleaningsH5955 of EphraimH669 betterH2896 than the vintage of Abi-ezer? 3Into your handsH3027 hath 1GodH430 delivered the princesH8269 of MidianH4080, OrebH6159 and ZeebH2062; and what was I ableH3201 to do in comparison with you? ThenH227 their spiritH7307 was appeased toward him, when he saidH1696 that wordH1697. 4And GideonH1439 cameH935 to the JordanH3383, [and] passedH5674 over, he and the threeH7969 hundredH3967 menH376 that were with him, faint, yet pursuingH7291. 5And he saidH559 to the menH376 of SuccothH5523, GiveH5414, I pray you, loaves of breadH3899 to the peopleH5971 that follow me, for they are faint; and I am pursuingH7291 after ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759, kingsH4428 of MidianH4080. 6And the chiefH8269 men of SuccothH5523 saidH559, Are the handsH3027 of ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759 already in thy handH3027, that we should giveH5414 breadH3899 to thine armyH6635? 7And GideonH1439 saidH559, ThereforeH3651 when Jehovah delivers ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759 into my handH3027, I will threshH1758 your fleshH1320 with thornsH6975 of the wildernessH4057 and with briars. 8And he wentH5927 up thence to PenuelH6439, and spokeH1696 to them in like manner. And the menH376 of PenuelH6439 answeredH6030 him as the menH376 of SuccothH5523 had answeredH6030. 9And he spoke alsoH1571 to the menH376 of PenuelH6439, sayingH559, When I come again in peaceH7965, I will breakH5422 down this towerH4026. 10Now ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759 were in Karkor, and their campH4264 with them, about fifteen thousandH505 [menH376], all that were leftH3498 of the whole campH4264 of the children of the eastH6924; for there had fallenH5307 a hundredH3967 and twentyH6242 thousandH505 menH376 that drewH8025 swordH2719. 11And GideonH1439 wentH5927 up by the wayH1870 of them that dwellH7931 in tentsH168 on the eastH6924 of NobahH5025 and JogbehahH3011, and smote the campH4264; for the campH4264 wasH1961 at its ease. 12And ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759 fledH5127, and he pursuedH7291 after them, and he tookH3920 the twoH8147 kingsH4428 of MidianH4080, ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759, and discomfited all the campH4264. 13And GideonH1439 the sonH1121 of JoashH3101 returnedH7725 from the battleH4421, from the ascentH4608 of Heres. 14And he caughtH3920 a youthH5288 of the menH376 of SuccothH5523, and inquired of him; and he wroteH3789 downH3789 for him the chiefH8269 menH376 of SuccothH5523, and the eldersH2205 thereof, seventy-sevenH7657 menH376. 15And he cameH935 to the menH376 of SuccothH5523, and saidH559, Behold ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759, with whom ye did upbraid me, sayingH559, Are the handsH3027 of ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759 already in thy handH3027, that we should giveH5414 breadH3899 to thy menH376 that are wearyH3286? 16And he tookH3947 the eldersH2205 of the cityH5892, and thornsH6975 of the wildernessH4057 and briars, and with them he taught the menH376 of SuccothH5523. 17And he brokeH5422 down the towerH4026 of PenuelH6439, and slewH2026 the menH376 of the cityH5892. 18Then saidH559 he to ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759, What sort of menH376 were they that ye slewH2026 at TaborH8396? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each oneH259 resembled the sonsH1121 of a kingH4428. 19And he saidH559, They were my brethren, the sonsH1121 of my motherH517. [As] Jehovah liveth, if ye had saved them aliveH2416, I would not slayH2026 you. 20And he saidH559 to JetherH3500 his firstbornH1060, AriseH6965, slayH2026 them! But the youthH5288 drewH8025 not his swordH2719; for he fearedH3372, because he was yetH5750 a youthH5288. 21Then ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759 saidH559, RiseH6965 thou, and fallH6293 on us; for as is the manH376, so is his strengthH1369. And GideonH1439 aroseH6965, and slewH2026 ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759; and he tookH3947 the moons that were on their camels' necksH6677. 22And the menH376 of IsraelH3478 saidH559 to GideonH1439, RuleH4910 over us, both thou, and thy sonH1121, and thy son's sonH1121 alsoH1571; for thou hast savedH3467 us from the handH3027 of MidianH4080. 23And GideonH1439 saidH559 to them, I will not ruleH4910 over you, neither shall my sonH1121 ruleH4910 over you: Jehovah will ruleH4910 over you. 24And GideonH1439 saidH559 to them, I would desire a request of you: giveH5414 me every manH376 the earringsH5141 of his bootyH7998; for they had golden earringsH5141, because they were IshmaelitesH3459. 25And they saidH559, We will willingly giveH5414 [them]. And they spreadH6566 a garmentH8071, and castH7993 therein every manH376 the earringsH5141 of his bootyH7998. 26And the weightH4948 of the golden earringsH5141 that he requested wasH1961 a thousandH505 sevenH7651 hundredH3967 [shekels] of goldH2091; besides the moons, and eardrops, and the purpleH713 garmentsH899 that were on the kingsH4428 of MidianH4080, and besides the chains that were about their camels' necksH6677. 27And GideonH1439 madeH6213 an ephodH646 of them, and put it in his cityH5892, in OphrahH6084. And all IsraelH3478 went thither a whoring after it; and it becameH1961 a snareH4170 to GideonH1439, and to his houseH1004. 28And MidianH4080 was subduedH3665 before the children of IsraelH3478, and they liftedH5375 up their headsH7218 no more. And the landH776 had rest fortyH705 yearsH8141 in the daysH3117 of GideonH1439. 29And JerubbaalH3378 the sonH1121 of JoashH3101 went and dweltH3427 in his houseH1004. 30Now GideonH1439 had seventyH7657 sonsH1121 who had come out of his loins, for he had manyH7227 wivesH802. 31And his concubineH6370 that was in ShechemH7927, she alsoH1571 boreH3205 him a sonH1121, and he gaveH3205 him the nameH8034 of AbimelechH40. 32And GideonH1439 the sonH1121 of JoashH3101 diedH4191 in a goodH2896 old age, and was buriedH6912 in the sepulchre of JoashH3101 his fatherH1, in OphrahH6084 of the Abi-ezrites. 33And it came to pass when GideonH1439 wasH1961 deadH4191, that the children of IsraelH3478 turnedH7725 again, and wentH7725 a whoring after the BaalsH1168, and setH7760 up Baal-BerithH1170 as their 2godH430. 34And the children of IsraelH3478 rememberedH2142 not Jehovah their 3GodH430, who had deliveredH5337 them out of the handH3027 of all their enemiesH341 on every side. 35And they shewed no kindness to the houseH1004 of Jerubbaal-Gideon, according to all the goodH2896 that he had done to IsraelH3478.
