Deuteronomy 28
(Leviticus 25:18–22)
“NowH1961 ifH518 you faithfully obeyH8085 the voice ofH6963 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 and are carefulH8104 to followH6213 allH3605 His commandmentsH4687 IH595 am giving you todayH6680H3117, the LORDH3068 your GodH430H5945 will set youH5414 high aboveH5921 allH3605 the nationsH1471 of the earthH776. 2And allH3605 theseH428 blessingsH1293 will comeH935 upon youH5921 and overtake youH5381, ifH3588 you will obeyH8085 the voice ofH6963 the LORDH3068 your GodH430:
The LORDH3068 will causeH5414 the enemiesH341 who rise upH6965 against youH5921 to be defeatedH5062 before youH6440. They will march outH3318 againstH413 you in oneH259 directionH1870 but fleeH5127 from youH6440 in sevenH7651.
The LORDH3068 will decreeH6680 a blessingH1293 on your barnsH618 and on everythingH3605 to which you putH4916 your handH3027; the LORDH3068 your GodH430 will bless youH1288 in the landH776 He is givingH5414 you. 9The LORDH3068 will establish youH6965 as His holyH6918 peopleH5971, just asH834 He has swornH7650 to you, ifH3588 you keepH8104 the commandmentsH4687 of the LORDH3068 your GodH430 and walkH1980 in His waysH1870. 10Then allH3605 the peoplesH5971 of the earthH776 will seeH7200 thatH3588 you are calledH7121 by the name ofH8034 the LORDH3068, and they will stand in aweH3372 of youH4480.
The LORDH3068 will make you prosperH3498 abundantlyH2896—in the fruit ofH6529 your wombH990, the offspringH6529 of your livestockH929, and the produceH6529 of your landH127—inH5921 the landH127 thatH834 the LORDH3068 sworeH7650 to your fathersH1 to giveH5414 you.
The LORDH3068 will openH6605 the heavensH8064, His abundantH2896 storehouseH214, to sendH5414 rainH4306 on your landH776 in seasonH6256 and to blessH1288 allH3605 the workH4639 of your handsH3027. You will lendH3867 to manyH7227 nationsH1471, butH859 borrowH3867 from noneH3808.
The LORDH3068 will makeH5414 you the headH7218 and notH3808 the tailH2180H1961; you will onlyH7535 move upwardH4605 and neverH3808H1961 downwardH4295, ifH3588 you hearH8085 and carefullyH8104 followH6213 the commandmentsH4687 of the LORDH3068 your GodH430, whichH834 IH595 am givingH6680 you todayH3117. 14Do notH3808 turn asideH5493 to the rightH3225 or to the leftH8040 from any ofH3605 the wordsH1697 IH595 commandH6680 youH853 todayH3117, and do not goH1980 afterH310 otherH312 godsH430 to serve themH5647.
The Curses of Disobedience
(Leviticus 20:1–9; Leviticus 26:14–39)
If, howeverH518, you do notH3808 obeyH8085H6963 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 by carefullyH8104 followingH6213 allH3605 His commandmentsH4687 and statutesH2708 IH595 am giving you todayH6680H3117, allH3605 theseH428 cursesH7045 will comeH935 upon youH5921 and overtake youH5381:
The LORDH3068 will sendH7971 cursesH3994 upon you, confusionH4103 andH853 reproofH4045 in allH3605 to which you putH4916 your handH3027, untilH5704 you are destroyedH8045H5704 and quicklyH4118 perishH6 because ofH6440 the wickednessH7455 you have committedH4611 in forsaking HimH5800.1
The LORDH3068 will make the plagueH1698 clingH1692 to you untilH5704 He has exterminatedH3615 youH853 fromH5921 the landH127 thatH834 youH859 are enteringH935H8033 to possessH3423. 22The LORDH3068 will strike youH5221 with wasting diseaseH7829, with feverH6920 and inflammationH1816, with scorching heatH2746 and droughtH2719,2 and with blightH7711 and mildewH3420; these will pursueH7291 you untilH5704 you perishH6. 23The skyH8064 overH5921 your headH7218 will beH1961 bronzeH5178, and the earthH776 beneath youH8478 ironH1270.
The LORDH3068 will turnH5414 the rainH4306 of your landH776 into dustH80 and powderH6083; it will descendH3381 on youH5921 fromH4480 the skyH8064 untilH5704 you are destroyedH8045.
The LORDH3068 will causeH5414 you to be defeatedH5062 beforeH6440 your enemiesH341. You will march outH3318 against themH413 in oneH259 directionH1870 but fleeH5127 from themH6440 in sevenH7651. You will beH1961 an object of horrorH2189 to allH3605 the kingdomsH4467 of the earthH776. 26Your corpsesH5038 will beH1961 foodH3978 for allH3605 the birdsH5775 of the airH8064 and beasts ofH929 the earthH776, with noH369 one to scare them awayH2729.
The LORDH3068 will afflictH5221 you with the boilsH7822 of EgyptH4714, with tumorsH6076 and scabsH1618 and itchH2775 from whichH834 you cannotH3808H3201 be curedH7495.
The LORDH3068 will afflictH5221 you with madnessH7697, blindnessH5788, and confusionH8541 of mindH3824, 29and at noonH6672 you willH1961 grope aboutH4959 likeH834 a blind manH5787 in the darknessH653. You will notH3808 prosperH6743 in your waysH1870. Day after dayH3605 you will beH1961 oppressedH6231 and plunderedH1497H3117, with no oneH369 to save youH3467.
You will be pledged in marriageH781 to a womanH802, but anotherH312 manH376 will violate herH7693. You will buildH1129 a houseH1004 but will notH3808 liveH3427 in it. You will plantH5193 a vineyardH3754 but will notH3808 enjoy its fruitH2490. 31Your oxH7794 will be slaughteredH2873 before your eyesH5869, but you will notH3808 eatH398 any of itH4480. Your donkeyH2543 will be taken awayH1497 and notH3808 returnedH7725 to you. Your flockH6629 will be givenH5414 to your enemiesH341, and no oneH369 will saveH3467 you.
Your sonsH1121 and daughtersH1323 will be givenH5414 to anotherH312 nationH5971, while your eyesH5869 grow wearyH3616 lookingH7200 for themH413 day after dayH3605H3117, with noH369 power inH410 your handH3027. 33A peopleH5971 you do notH3808 knowH3045 will eatH398 the produceH6529 of your landH127 and of allH3605 your toilH3018. AllH3605 your daysH3117 you will beH1961 oppressedH6231 and crushedH7533. 34You will beH1961 driven madH7696 by the sightsH4758H5869 you seeH7200.
The LORDH3068 will afflict youH5221 with painfulH7451, incurableH3808H3201H7495 boilsH7822 onH5921 your kneesH1290H5921 and thighsH7785, from the solesH3709 of your feetH7272 toH5704 the top of your headH6936.
The LORDH3068 will bringH1980 youH853 andH853 the kingH4428 you appointH6965H5921 toH413 a nationH1471 neither youH859 norH3808 your fathersH1 have knownH3045, and thereH8033 you will worshipH5647 otherH312 godsH430—gods of woodH6086 and stoneH68. 37You will becomeH1961 an object of horrorH8047, scornH4912, and ridiculeH8148 among allH3605 the nationsH5971 to whichH834 the LORDH3068H8033 will drive youH5090.
You will sowH3318 muchH7227 seedH2233 in the fieldH7704 but harvestH622 littleH4592, becauseH3588 the locustsH697 will consume itH2628. 39You will plantH5193 and cultivateH5647 vineyardsH3754, but will neitherH3808 drinkH8354 the wineH3196 norH3808 gatherH103 the grapes, becauseH3588 wormsH8438 will eat themH398. 40You will haveH1961 olive treesH2132 throughoutH3605 your territoryH1366 but will neverH3808 anointH5480 yourself with oilH8081, becauseH3588 the olivesH2132 will drop offH5394. 41You will fatherH3205 sonsH1121 and daughtersH1323, but they will notH3808 remainH1961 yours, becauseH3588 they will goH1980 into captivityH7628. 42Swarms of locustsH6767 will consumeH3423 allH3605 your treesH6086 and the produceH6529 of your landH127.
The foreigner livingH1616 among youH7130 will riseH5927 higherH4605 and higherH4605 above youH5921, while youH859 sink downH3381 lowerH4295 and lowerH4295. 44HeH1931 will lend to youH3867, but youH859 will notH3808 lend to himH3867. HeH1931 will beH1961 the headH7218, and youH859 will beH1961 the tailH2180.
AllH3605 theseH428 cursesH7045 will comeH935 upon youH5921. They will pursue youH7291 and overtake youH5381 untilH5704 you are destroyedH8045, sinceH3588 you did notH3808 obeyH8085H6963 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 and keepH8104 the commandmentsH4687 and statutesH2708 He gave youH6680. 46These curses will beH1961 a signH226 and a wonderH4159 upon you and your descendantsH2233 foreverH5704H5769.
BecauseH8478 you did notH3808 serveH5647 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 with joyH8057 and gladnessH2898 of heartH3824 in allH3605 your abundanceH7230, 48you will serveH5647 your enemiesH341 the LORDH3068 will sendH7971 against you in famineH7458, thirstH6772, nakednessH5903, and destitutionH2640H3605. He will placeH5414 an ironH1270 yokeH5923 onH5921 your neckH6677 untilH5704 He has destroyedH8045 youH853.
The LORDH3068 will bringH5375 a nationH1471 from afarH7350, from the ends ofH7097 the earthH776, to swoop downH1675 upon youH5921 likeH834 an eagleH5404—a nationH1471 whoseH834 languageH3956 you will notH3808 understandH8085, 50a ruthlessH5794H6440 nationH1471 with noH3808 respectH5375H6440 for the oldH2205 and noH3808 pityH2603 for the youngH5288. 51They will eatH398 the offspringH6529 of your livestockH929 and the produceH6529 of your landH127 untilH5704 you are destroyedH8045. They will leaveH7604 you noH3808 grainH1715 or new wineH8492 or oilH3323, no calvesH7698 of your herdsH504 or lambsH6251 of your flocksH6629, untilH5704 they have caused you to perishH6. 52They will besiegeH6887 allH3605 the citiesH8179 throughoutH3605 your landH776, untilH5704 the highH1364 and fortifiedH1219 wallsH2346 in whichH834 youH859 trustH982 have fallenH3381. They will besiegeH6887 allH3605 your citiesH8179 throughoutH3605 the landH776 thatH834 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 has givenH5414 you.
Then you will eatH398 the fruitH6529 of your wombH990, the fleshH1320 of the sonsH1121 and daughtersH1323 whomH834 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 has givenH5414 you, in the siegeH4692 and distressH4689 thatH834 your enemyH341 will inflictH6693 on you.
The mostH3966 gentleH7390 and refinedH6028 manH376 among you will begrudgeH7489H5869 his brotherH251, the wifeH802 he embracesH2436,3 and the restH3499 of his childrenH1121 who have survivedH3498, 55refusing to shareH5414 with anyH259 of them the fleshH1320 of his childrenH1121 he will eatH398 because he has nothingH1097H3605 leftH7604 in the siegeH4692 and distressH4689 thatH834 your enemyH341 will inflictH6693 on you within allH3605 your gatesH8179.4
The most gentleH7390 and refined womanH6028 among you, so gentleH7391 and refinedH6026 she would notH3808 ventureH5254 to setH3322 the soleH3709 of her footH7272 onH5921 the groundH776, will begrudgeH7489H5869 the husbandH376 she embracesH24365 and her sonH1121 and daughterH1323 57the afterbirthH7988 that comesH3318 from betweenH996 her legsH7272 and the childrenH1121 she bearsH3205, becauseH3588 she will secretlyH5643 eat themH398 for lackH2640 of anything elseH3605 in the siegeH4692 and distressH4689 thatH834 your enemyH341 will inflictH6693 on you within your gatesH8179.
IfH518 you are notH3808 carefulH8104 to observeH6213 allH3605 the wordsH1697 of thisH2063 lawH8451 which are writtenH3789 in thisH2088 bookH5612, that you may fearH3372 this gloriousH3513 and awesomeH3372H2088 nameH8034—the LORDH3068 your GodH430— 59HeH3068 will bring upon you and your descendantsH2233 extraordinaryH6381 disastersH4347, severeH1419 and lastingH539 plaguesH4347, and terribleH7451 and chronicH539 sicknessesH2483. 60He will afflict you againH7725 with allH3605 the diseasesH4064 you dreadedH3025 in EgyptH4714H6440, and they will clingH1692 to you.
The LORDH3068 will alsoH1571 bringH5927 upon youH5921 everyH3605 sicknessH2483H3605 and plagueH4347 notH3808 recordedH3789 in thisH2063 BookH5612 of the LawH8451, untilH5704 you are destroyedH8045. 62You who wereH1961 as numerousH7230 as the starsH3556 in the skyH8064 will be leftH7604 fewH4592 in numberH4962, becauseH3588 you would notH3808 obeyH8085 the voice ofH6963 the LORDH3068 your GodH430.
Just asH834 it pleasedH7797 the LORDH3068 to make you prosperH3190 and multiplyH7235, so alsoH3651 it will pleaseH7797 HimH3068H5921 to annihilateH6 youH853 and destroyH8045 youH853. And you will be uprootedH5255 fromH5921 the landH127 youH859 are enteringH935H8033 to possessH3423.
Then the LORDH3068 will scatterH6327 you among allH3605 the nationsH5971, from one endH7097 of the earthH776 toH5704 the otherH7097H776, and thereH8033 you will worshipH5647 otherH312 godsH430, gods of woodH6086 and stoneH68, whichH834 neither youH859 norH3808 your fathersH1 have knownH3045. 65Among thoseH1992 nationsH1471 you will find noH3808 reposeH7280, not evenH3808 a resting placeH4494 for the soleH3709 of your footH7272. ThereH8033 the LORDH3068 will giveH5414 you a tremblingH7268 heartH3820, failingH3631 eyesH5869, and a despairingH1671 soulH5315.
So your lifeH2416 will hang in doubtH8511 before youH5048, and you will be afraidH6342 nightH3915 and dayH3119, neverH3808 certainH539 of survivalH2416. 67In the morningH1242 you will sayH559, ‘If onlyH4310H5414 it were eveningH6153!’ and in the eveningH6153 you will sayH559, ‘If onlyH4310H5414 it were morningH1242!’—because of the dreadH6343 in your heartsH3824 ofH834 the terrifyingH6342 sightsH4758H5869 you will seeH7200.
The LORDH3068 will return youH7725 to EgyptH4714 in shipsH591 by a routeH1870 thatH834 I saidH559 you should neverH3808 seeH7200 againH3254H5750. ThereH8033 you will sellH4376 yourselves to your enemiesH341 as maleH5650 and female slavesH8198, but noH369 one will buy youH7069.”
