Deuteronomy 21

1IfH3588 one is foundH4672 slainH2491, lyingH5307 in a fieldH7704 in the landH127 thatH834 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 is givingH5414 you to possessH3423, and it is notH3808 knownH3045 whoH4310 killed himH5221, 2your eldersH2205 and judgesH8199 must come outH3318 and measure the distanceH4058 from the victimH2491 toH413 the neighboringH5439 citiesH5892.

3ThenH1961 the eldersH2205H5892H1931 of the cityH5892 nearestH7138 the victimH2491 shall takeH3947 a heiferH5697H1241 thatH834 has neverH3808 been yokedH5923 or used for workH5647, 4bringH3381 the heiferH5697 toH413 a valleyH5158 with running waterH386 thatH834 has notH3808 been plowedH5647 or sownH2232, and break itsH5697 neckH6202 thereH8033 by the streamH5158.

5And the priestsH3548, the sonsH1121 of LeviH3878, shall come forwardH5066, forH3588 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 has chosen themH977 to serve HimH8334 and pronounce blessingsH1288 in HisH3068 nameH8034 and to give a rulingH5921H6310H1961 in everyH3605 disputeH7379H3605 and case of assaultH5061. 6Then allH3605 the eldersH2205 of the cityH5892H1931 nearestH7138 the victimH2491 shall washH7364 their handsH3027 by the streamH5158 overH5921 the heiferH5697 whose neck has been brokenH6202, 7and they shall declareH6030H559, “Our handsH3027 did notH3808 shedH8210 thisH2088 bloodH1818, nor didH3808 our eyesH5869 see itH7200. 8Accept this atonementH3722, O LORDH3068, for Your peopleH5971 IsraelH3478 whomH834 You have redeemedH6299, and do notH408 holdH5414 the shedding of innocentH5355 bloodH1818 againstH7130 themH5971H3478.”

And the bloodshedH1818 will be atoned forH3722. 9So youH859 shall purgeH1197 from among youH7130 the guilt of shedding innocentH5355 bloodH1818, sinceH3588 you have doneH6213 what is rightH3477 in the eyesH5869 of the LORDH3068.

Marrying a Captive Woman

10WhenH3588 you goH3318 to warH4421 againstH5921 your enemiesH341 and the LORDH3068 your GodH430 delivers themH5414 into your handH3027 and you take themH7617 captiveH7628, 11if you seeH7200 a beautifulH3303H8389 womanH802 amongH7633 them, and you desireH2836 her and want to takeH3947 her as your wifeH802, 12then you shall bring herH935 intoH413H8432 your houseH1004. She must shaveH1548 her headH7218, trimH6213 her nailsH6856, 13and put asideH5493 the clothingH8071 of her captivityH7628.

AfterH310 she has livedH3427 in your houseH1004 a full monthH3391H3117 and mournedH1058 her fatherH1 and motherH517, you may have relations withH935 herH413 and be her husbandH1166, and she shall beH1961 your wifeH802. 14AndH1961 ifH518 you are notH3808 pleasedH2654 with her, you are to let her goH7971 wherever she wishesH5315. But you must notH3808 sell herH4376 for moneyH3701H3808 or treat her as a slaveH6014, sinceH8478 you have dishonored herH6031.

Inheritance Rights of the Firstborn

15IfH3588 a manH376 hasH1961 twoH8147 wivesH802, oneH259 belovedH157 and the otherH259 unlovedH8130, andH157H8130 both bearH3205 him sonsH1121, but the unlovedH8146 wife hasH1961 the firstbornH1060 sonH1121, 16whenH3117 that manH834H1961 assigns his inheritanceH5157 to his sonsH1121 he must notH3808 appointH3201 the sonH1121 of the beloved wifeH157 asH5921 the firstbornH6440 overH1121 the son of the unloved wifeH8130H1060.

17InsteadH3588, he must acknowledgeH5234 the firstbornH1060, the sonH1121 of his unloved wifeH8130, by givingH5414 him a doubleH8147 portionH6310 of allH3605 thatH834 he hasH4672. ForH3588 that son is the firstfruitsH7225 of his father’s strengthH202; the rightH4941 of the firstbornH1062 belongs to him.

A Rebellious Son

(Luke 15:11–32)

18IfH3588 a manH376 hasH1961 a stubbornH5637 and rebelliousH4784 sonH1121 who does notH369 obeyH8085H6963 his fatherH1H6963 and motherH517 andH3808 does not listenH8085 to themH413 when disciplinedH3256, 19his fatherH1 and motherH517 are to lay holdH8610 of him and bringH3318 himH853 toH413 the eldersH2205 of his cityH5892, toH413 the gateH8179 of his hometownH4725, 20and sayH559 toH413 the eldersH2205, “ThisH2088 son of oursH1121 is stubbornH5637 and rebelliousH4784; he does notH369 obey usH8085H6963. He is a gluttonH2151 and a drunkardH5433.”

21Then allH3605 the menH582 of his cityH5892 will stone himH7275H68 to deathH4191. So you must purgeH1197 the evilH7451 from among youH7130,1 and allH3605 IsraelH3478 will hearH8085 and be afraidH3372.

Cursed Is Anyone Hung on a Tree

22IfH3588 a manH376 has committedH1961 a sinH2399 worthyH4941 of deathH4194, and he is executedH4191, and you hangH8518 his bodyH853 onH5921 a treeH6086,2 23you must not leaveH3808 the bodyH5038 onH5921 the treeH6086 overnightH3885, butH3588 you must be sure to buryH6912 himH1931 that dayH3117, becauseH3588 anyone who is hungH8518 on a tree is under God’sH430 curseH7045.3 You must notH3808 defileH2930 the landH127 thatH834 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 is givingH5414 you as an inheritanceH5159.
