Deuteronomy 2
Then we turned backH6437 and headedH5265 for the wildernessH4057 by wayH1870 of the RedH5488 SeaH3220,1 asH834 the LORDH3068H413 had instructed meH1696, and for manyH7227 daysH3117 we wandered aroundH5437 MountH2022 SeirH8165.
At this time the LORDH3068 saidH559 to meH413H559, 3“You have been wandering aroundH5437 thisH2088 hill countryH2022 long enoughH7227; turnH6437 to the northH6828 4and commandH6680H559 the peopleH5971: ‘YouH859 will passH5674 through the territoryH1366 of your brothersH251, the descendantsH1121 of EsauH6215, who liveH3427 in SeirH8165. They will be afraidH3372 of you, so you must be veryH3966 carefulH8104. 5Do notH408 provokeH1624 them, forH3588 I will notH3808 giveH5414 you any of their landH776, not evenH5704 a footprintH4096H3709H7272, becauseH3588 I have givenH5414 MountH2022 SeirH8165 to EsauH6215 as his possessionH3425. 6You are to payH7666 themH854 in silverH3701 for the foodH400 you eatH398 andH1571 the waterH4325 you drinkH8354.’”
IndeedH3588, the LORDH3068 your GodH430 has blessedH1288 you in allH3605 the workH4639 of your handsH3027. He has watched overH3045 your journeyH1980 through thisH2088 vastH1419 wildernessH4057. The LORDH3068 your GodH430 has been with youH5973 theseH2088 fortyH705 yearsH8141, and you have lackedH2637 nothingH3808H1697.
So we passed byH5674H854 our brothersH251, the descendantsH1121 of EsauH6215, who liveH3427 in SeirH8165. We turned awayH6437 from the ArabahH6160 roadH1870, which comes up from ElathH359 and Ezion-geberH6100, and traveledH5674 along the roadH1870 of the WildernessH4057 of MoabH4124. 9Then the LORDH3068 saidH559 to meH413, “Do notH413 harassH6696 the MoabitesH4124 or provokeH1624 them to warH4421, forH3588 I will notH3808 giveH5414 you any of their landH776, becauseH3588 I have givenH5414 ArH6144 to the descendantsH1121 of LotH3876 as their possessionH3425.”
(The EmitesH368 used toH6440 liveH3427 there, a peopleH5971 greatH1419 and manyH7227, as tallH7311 as the AnakitesH6062. 11Like the AnakitesH6062, they were alsoH637H1992 regardedH2803 as RephaimH7497, though the MoabitesH4125 calledH7121 them EmitesH368. 12The HoritesH2752 used toH6440 liveH3427 in SeirH8165, but the descendantsH1121 of EsauH6215 drove them outH3423. They destroyedH8045 the Horites from before themH6440 and settledH3427 in their placeH8478, just asH834 IsraelH3478 didH6213 in the landH776 thatH834 the LORDH3068 gaveH5414 them as their possessionH3425.)
“NowH6258 ariseH6965 and cross overH5674 the BrookH5158 of ZeredH2218.”
So we crossed overH5674 the BrookH5158 of ZeredH2218.
The timeH3117 we spent travelingH1980 fromH6947 Kadesh-barneaH6947 untilH5704 we crossed overH5674 the BrookH5158 of ZeredH2218 was thirty-eightH7970H8083 yearsH8141, untilH5704 that entireH3605 generationH1755 of fightingH4421 menH582 had perishedH8552 fromH7130 the campH4264, asH834 the LORDH3068 had swornH7650 to them. 15IndeedH1571, the LORD’sH3068 handH3027 wasH1961 against them, to eliminate themH2000 fromH7130 the campH4264, untilH5704 they had all perishedH8552.
NowH1961 whenH834H8552 allH3605 the fightingH4421 menH582 amongH7130 the peopleH5971 had diedH4191, 17the LORDH3068 saidH1696 to meH413H559, 18“TodayH3117 youH859 are going to crossH5674 the borderH1366 of MoabH4124 at ArH6144. 19But when you get closeH7126 toH4136 the AmmonitesH1121H5983, do notH408 harass themH6696H408 or provokeH1624 them, forH3588 I will notH3808 giveH5414 you any of the landH776 of the AmmonitesH1121H5983. I have given itH5414 to the descendantsH1121 of LotH3876 as their possessionH3425.”
(That tooH637 was regardedH2803 as the landH776 of the RephaimH7497, who used to liveH3427 thereH6440, though the AmmonitesH5984 calledH7121 them ZamzummitesH2157. 21They were a peopleH5971 greatH1419 and manyH7227, as tallH7311 as the AnakitesH6062. But the LORDH3068 destroyed themH8045 from beforeH6440 the Ammonites, who drove them outH3423 and settledH3427 in their placeH8478, 22just asH834 He had doneH6213 for the descendantsH1121 of EsauH6215 who livedH3427 in SeirH8165, whenH834 He destroyedH8045 the HoritesH2752 from before themH6440. They drove them outH3423 and have livedH3427 in their placeH8478 toH5704 thisH2088 dayH3117. 23And the AvvimH5761, who livedH3427 in villagesH2691 asH5704 far as GazaH5804, were destroyed byH8045 the CaphtoritesH3732, who cameH3318 out of CaphtorH37312 and settledH3427 in their placeH8478.)
The Defeat of Sihon
(Numbers 21:21–30)
“AriseH6965, set outH5265, and crossH5674 the ArnonH769 ValleyH5158. SeeH7200, I have deliveredH5414 into your handH3027 SihonH5511 the AmoriteH567, kingH4428 of HeshbonH2809, and his landH776. BeginH2490 to take possession of itH3423 and engageH1624 him in battleH4421. 25This veryH2088 dayH3117 I will beginH2490 to putH5414 the dreadH6343 and fearH3374 of youH5921 upon allH3605 the nationsH6440H5971 underH8478 heavenH8064. They will hearH8085 the reports of youH8088 and trembleH7264 in anguishH2342 because of youH6440.”
So from the WildernessH4057 of KedemothH6932 I sentH7971 messengersH4397 with an offerH1697 of peaceH7965 toH413 SihonH5511 kingH4428 of HeshbonH2809, sayingH559, 27“Let us passH5674 through your landH776; we will stay on the main roadH1870H1980. We will notH3808 turnH5493 to the rightH3225 or to the leftH8040. 28You can sell usH7666 foodH400 to eatH398 and waterH4325 to drinkH8354 in exchange for silverH3701. OnlyH7535 let us pass throughH5674 on footH7272, 29just asH834 the descendantsH1121 of EsauH6215 who liveH3427 in SeirH8165 and the MoabitesH4125 who liveH3427 in ArH6144 did for usH6213, untilH5704 we crossH5674 the JordanH3383 intoH413 the landH776 thatH834 the LORDH3068 our GodH430 is givingH5414 us.”
But SihonH5511 kingH4428 of HeshbonH2809 wouldH14 notH3808 let us passH5674 through, forH3588 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 had made his spiritH7307 stubbornH7185 and his heartH3824 obstinateH553, thatH4616 He might deliver himH5414 into your handH3027, as is the caseH2088 this dayH3117.
Then the LORDH3068 saidH559 to meH413, “SeeH7200, I have begunH2490 to deliverH5414 SihonH5511 and his landH776 over to youH6440. NowH853 beginH2490 to conquerH3423 and possessH3423 his landH776.”
So SihonH5511 and his wholeH3605 armyH5971 came outH3318 for battleH4421 against usH7122 at JahazH3096. 33And the LORDH3068 our GodH430 delivered him overH5414 to usH6440, and we defeated himH5221 and his sonsH1121 and his wholeH3605 armyH5971.
At thatH1931 timeH6256 we capturedH3920 allH3605 his citiesH5892 and devoted to destructionH27633 the peopleH4962 of everyH3605 cityH5892, including womenH802 and childrenH2945. We leftH7604 noH3808 survivorsH8300. 35We carried off for ourselves onlyH7535 the livestockH929 and the plunderH7998 from the citiesH5892 we capturedH3920.
From AroerH6177 onH5921 the rimH8193 of the ArnonH769 ValleyH5158, along with the cityH5892 in the valleyH5158, even asH5704 far as GileadH1568, not oneH3808 cityH7151 had walls too highH7682 for usH4480. The LORDH3068 our GodH430 gaveH5414 usH6440 all of themH3605. 37ButH7535H413 you did notH3808 go nearH7126 the landH776 of the AmmonitesH1121H5983, orH3605 the land along the banksH3027 of the JabbokH2999 RiverH5158, or the citiesH5892 of the hill countryH2022, or anyH3605 place thatH834 the LORDH3068 our GodH430 had forbiddenH6680.
