Deuteronomy 24
(Matthew 5:31–32; Luke 16:18)
IfH3588H3947 a manH376 marriesH1166H1961 a womanH802, butH518 she becomes displeasingH3808H4672H2580H5869 to him becauseH3588 he findsH4672 someH1697 indecencyH6172 in her, he may writeH3789 her a certificateH5612 of divorceH3748,1 hand it toH5414 herH3027, and send her awayH7971 from his houseH1004.
If, after leavingH3318 his houseH1004, she goesH1980 and becomesH1961 anotherH312 man’s wifeH376, 3and the secondH314 manH376 hates herH8130, writesH3789 her a certificateH5612 of divorceH3748, hands it toH5414 herH3027, and sends her awayH7971 from his houseH1004, orH176 ifH3588 he diesH4191H376H314, 4then the husbandH1167 whoH834 divorced herH7971 firstH7223 mayH3201 notH3808 remarryH7725H3947H1961 herH802 afterH310 she has been defiledH2930, forH3588 thatH1931 is an abominationH8441 toH6440 the LORDH3068. You must notH3808 bring sinH2398 upon the landH776 thatH834 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 is givingH5414 you as an inheritanceH5159.
IfH3588 a manH376 is newlyH2319 marriedH3947H802, he must notH3808 be sentH3318 to warH6635 orH3808 be pressed intoH5674 anyH3605 dutyH1697. For oneH259 yearH8141 he isH1961 freeH5355 to stay at homeH1004 and bring joyH8055 to the wifeH802 he has marriedH3947.
Additional Laws
Do notH3808 take a pair of millstonesH7347 or even an upper millstoneH7393 as security for a debtH2254, becauseH3588 that would beH1931 taking one’s livelihoodH5315 as securityH2254.
IfH3588 a manH376 is caughtH4672 kidnappingH1589 oneH5315 of his IsraeliteH1121H3478 brothersH251, whether he treats him as a slaveH6014 or sells himH4376, theH1931 kidnapperH1590 must dieH4191. So you must purgeH1197 the evilH7451 from among youH7130.2
In cases of infectiousH5061 skin diseasesH6883,3 be carefulH8104 to diligentlyH8104 followH6213H3966 everythingH3605 the LeviticalH3881 priestsH3548 instructH3384 youH853. Be carefulH8104 to doH6213 as I have commanded themH6680. 9RememberH2142 whatH834 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 didH6213 to MiriamH4813 on the journeyH1870 after you came outH3318 of EgyptH4714.
WhenH3588 you lendH5383 anythingH4859H3972 to your neighborH7453, do notH3808 enterH935H413 his houseH1004 to collectH5670 securityH5667. 11You are to standH5975 outsideH2351 while the manH376 to whomH859 you are lendingH5383 bringsH3318 the securityH5667 outH2351 to youH413. 12IfH518 heH1931 is a poorH6041 manH376, you must notH3808 go to sleepH7901 with the security in your possessionH5667; 13be sure to returnH7725 it to him by sunsetH935H8121, so that he may sleepH7901 in his own cloakH8008 and bless youH1288, and this will beH1961 credited to you as righteousnessH6666 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068 your GodH430.
Do notH3808 oppressH6231 a hired handH7916 who is poorH6041 and needyH34, whether he is a brotherH251 orH176 a foreigner residingH1616 in one of your townsH8179. 15You are to payH5414 his wagesH7939 each dayH3117 beforeH3808 sunsetH8121H935, becauseH3588 heH1931H413 is poorH6041 and dependsH5375 on themH413. OtherwiseH3808 he may cry outH7121 to the LORDH3068 against youH5921H1961, and you will be guilty of sinH2399.
FathersH1 shall notH3808 be put to deathH4191 forH5921 their childrenH1121, nor childrenH1121H3808 forH5921 their fathersH1; eachH376 is to dieH4191 for his own sinH2399.4
Do notH3808 denyH5186 justiceH4941 to the foreignerH1616 or the fatherlessH3490, and do notH3808 take a widow’sH490 cloakH899 as securityH2254. 18RememberH2142 thatH3588 you wereH1961 slavesH5650 in EgyptH4714, and the LORDH3068 your GodH430 redeemed youH6299 from that placeH8033. ThereforeH5921H3651 IH595 am commandingH6680 you to doH6213 thisH2088.
IfH3588 you are harvestingH7114H7105 in your fieldH7704 and forgetH7911 a sheafH6016 there, do notH3808 go backH7725 to get itH3947. It isH1961 to be left for the foreignerH1616, the fatherlessH3490, and the widowH490, so thatH4616 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 may blessH1288 you in allH3605 the workH4639 of your handsH3027.
WhenH3588 you beatH2251 the olives from your treesH2132, you must notH3808 go overH6286 the branches againH310. What remains will beH1961 for the foreignerH1616, the fatherlessH3490, and the widowH490.
WhenH3588 you gather the grapesH1219 of your vineyardH3754, you must notH3808 go overH5953 the vines againH310. What remains will beH1961 for the foreignerH1616, the fatherlessH3490, and the widowH490. 22RememberH2142 thatH3588 you wereH1961 slavesH5650 in the landH776 of EgyptH4714. ThereforeH5921H3651 IH595 am commandingH6680 you to doH6213 thisH2088.
