Deuteronomy 25

1IfH3588 there isH1961 a disputeH7379 betweenH996 menH582, they are to goH5066 toH413 courtH4941 to be judgedH8199, so that the innocentH6662 may be acquittedH6663 and the guiltyH7563 condemnedH7561.

2

IfH518H1121 the guilty manH7563 deserves to be beatenH5221, the judgeH8199 shall have him lie downH5307 and be floggedH5221 in his presenceH6440 with the numberH4557 of lashesH1767 his crime warrantsH7564. 3He may receiveH5221 noH3808 moreH3254 than forty lashesH705, lestH6435 your brotherH251 be beatenH5221 any moreH3254 thanH5921 thatH428H4347H7227 and be degradedH7034 in your sightH5869.

4Do notH3808 muzzleH2629 an oxH7794 while it is treading out the grainH1758.1

Widowhood and Marriage

5WhenH3588 brothersH251 dwellH3427 togetherH3162 and oneH259 of them diesH4191 withoutH369 a sonH1121, the widowH802H4191 must notH3808 marryH1961H376 outsideH2114H2351 the family. Her husband’s brotherH2993 is to take herH3947 as his wifeH802 and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law for herH935H5921H2992.2 6The first sonH1060 she bearsH3205 will carryH6965 onH5921 the nameH8034 of the deadH4191 brotherH251, so that his nameH8034 will notH3808 be blotted outH4229 from IsraelH3478.

7But ifH518 the manH376 does notH3808 wantH2654 to marryH3947 his brother’s widowH2994, sheH2994 is to goH5927 toH413 the eldersH2205 at the city gateH8179 and sayH559, “My husband’s brotherH2993 refusesH3985 to preserveH6965 his brother’sH251 nameH8034 in IsraelH3478. He is notH3808 willingH14 to perform the duty of a brother-in-law for meH2992.”

8Then the eldersH2205 of his cityH5892 shall summonH7121 him and speakH1696 with himH413. If he persistsH5975 and saysH559, “I do notH3808 wantH2654 to marry herH3947,” 9his brother’s widowH2994 shall go upH5066 to himH413 in the presenceH5869 of the eldersH2205, removeH2502 his sandalH5275, spitH3417 in his faceH6440H6030, and declareH559, “This is whatH3602 is doneH6213 to the manH376 whoH834 will notH3808 maintainH1129 his brother’sH251 lineH1004.” 10And his family nameH8034 in IsraelH3478 will be calledH7121 “The HouseH1004 of the UnsandaledH5275H2502.”

11IfH3588 two menH582H3162 are fightingH5327, and the wifeH802 of oneH259 comesH7126 to rescueH5337 her husbandH376 fromH3027 the one striking himH5221, and she reaches outH7971 her handH3027 and grabsH2388 his genitalsH4016, 12you are to cut offH7112 her handH3709. You must show her no pityH3808H2347H5869.

Standard Weights and Measures

(Proverbs 11:1–3; Ezekiel 45:10–12)

13You shall notH3808 haveH1961 two differing weightsH68 in your bagH3599, one heavyH1419 and one lightH6996. 14You shall notH3808 haveH1961 two differing measuresH374 in your houseH1004, one largeH1419 and one smallH6996.

15You must maintainH1961 accurateH8003 and honestH6664 weightsH68 and measuresH374, so thatH4616 you may live longH748H3117 inH5921 the landH127 thatH834 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 is givingH5414 you. 16ForH3588 everyoneH3605 who behavesH6213 dishonestlyH5766 in regard to these thingsH428 is detestableH8441 to the LORDH3068 your GodH430.

Revenge on the Amalekites

17RememberH2142 whatH834 the AmalekitesH6002 didH6213 to you along your wayH1870 fromH3318 EgyptH4714, 18howH834 they met youH7136 on your journeyH1870 when youH859 were tiredH3023 and wearyH5889, and they attackedH2179 allH3605 your stragglersH2826H310; they had noH3808 fearH3372 of GodH430.

19

When the LORDH3068 your GodH430 gives you restH5117 fromH3605 the enemiesH341 around youH5439 in the landH776 thatH834 He is givingH5414 you to possessH3423 as an inheritanceH5159, you are to blot outH4229 the memoryH2143 of AmalekH6002 from underH8478 heavenH8064. Do notH3808 forgetH7911!
