Context of 2 Kings 14:6
4Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away, and the people continued sacrificing and burning incense on the high places. 5As soon as the kingdom was firmly in his grasp, Amaziah executed the servants who had murdered his father the king. Yet he did not put the sons of the murderers to death, but acted according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, where the LORD commanded: “Fathers must not be put to death for their children, and children must not be put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.” 7Amaziah struck down 10,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt. He took Sela in battle and called it Joktheel, which is its name to this very day. 8Then Amaziah sent messengers to the king of Israel Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu. “Come, let us meet face to face,” he said.

Commentaries on 2 Kings 14:6
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6But the children of the murderers he slew not - Here he showed his conscientious regard for the law of Moses; for God had positively said, The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin, Deuteronomy 24:16.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6The children of the murderers he slew not - This seems to be noted as a rare instance of clemency (compare 2 Kings 9:26 note). It is strange at first sight, that, when the Law contained so very plain a prohibition (marginal references), the contrary practice should have established itself. But we must remember, first, that the custom was that of the East generally (see Daniel 6:24); and secondly, that it had the sanction of one who might be thought to…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-6When Amaziah executed his father’s killers, he obeyed the law that says parents and children should not be punished for each other’s crimes (Deuteronomy 24:16; see also 2 Chronicles 25:4). He put the killers to death but did not kill their children.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-62Ki 14:1-6. Amaziah's Good Reign over Judah. 3-6. He did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, yet not like David his father--The beginning of his reign was excellent, for he acted the part of a constitutional king, according to the law of God, yet not with perfect sincerity of heart (compare 2Ch 25:2). As in the case of his father Joash, the early promise was belied by the devious course he personally followed in later life (see 2Ch 20:14), as…Read the comment
