6Now Josephיוֹסֵף֙yo.SefH3130and allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605his brothersאֶחָ֔יו'e.ChavH251and allוְכֹ֖לve.KholH3605thatהַהֽוּא׃ha.Hu'H1931generationהַדּ֥וֹרha.DorH1755diedוַיָּ֤מָתvai.Ya.motH4191,

Oppression by a New King

9“Lookהִנֵּ֗הhi.NehH2009,”he saidוַיֹּ֖אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559toאֶל־'el-H413his peopleעַמּ֑וֹa.MoH5971, “the Israelitesעַ֚ם בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל'am be.Nei Yis.ra.'ElH1121 H3478 H5971have becometoo numerousרַ֥בravH7227and too powerfulוְעָצ֖וּםve.'a.TzumH6099for usמִמֶּֽנּוּ׃mi.Me.nuH4480.

10Comeהָ֥בָהHa.vahH3051,let us deal shrewdlyנִֽתְחַכְּמָ֖הnit.cha.ke.MahH2449with them,orפֶּן־pen-H6435they will increase even moreיִרְבֶּ֗הyir.BehH7235;and ifוְהָיָ֞ה כִּֽי־ve.ha.Yah ki-H1961 H3588a warמִלְחָמָה֙mil.cha.MahH4421breaks outתִקְרֶ֤אנָהtik.Re.nahH7122,theyהוּא֙ עַל־hu' 'al-H1931 H5921may joinוְנוֹסַ֤ף גַּם־ve.no.Saf gam-H3254 H1571our enemiesשֹׂ֣נְאֵ֔ינוּso.ne.'Ei.nuH8130,fightוְנִלְחַם־ve.nil.cham-H3898against us,and leaveוְעָלָ֥ה מִן־ve.'a.Lah min-H5927 H4480the countryהָאָֽרֶץ׃ha.'A.retzH776.”

11So the Egyptians appointedוַיָּשִׂ֤ימוּvai.ya.Si.muH7760taskmastersשָׂרֵ֣י מִסִּ֔יםsa.Rei mi.SimH8269 H4522overעָלָיו֙'a.LavH5921the Israelites toלְמַ֥עַןle.Ma.'anH4616oppress themעַנֹּת֖וֹa.no.ToH6031with forced laborבְּסִבְלֹתָ֑םbe.siv.lo.TamH5450.As a result, they builtוַיִּ֜בֶןvai.Yi.venH1129Pithomפִּתֹ֖םpi.TomH6619אֶת־'et-H853and Ramesesרַעַמְסֵֽס׃ra.'am.SesH7486as storeמִסְכְּנוֹת֙mis.ke.nOtH4543citiesעָרֵ֤י'a.ReiH5892for Pharaohלְפַרְעֹ֔הle.far.'OhH6547וְאֶת־ve.'EtH853.

12וְכַאֲשֶׁר֙ve.kha.'a.SherH834But the more they were oppressedיְעַנּ֣וּye.'a.NuH6031אֹת֔וֹ'o.ToH853כֵּ֥ןkenH3651,the more they multipliedיִרְבֶּ֖ה וְכֵ֣ןyir.Beh ve.KhenH7235 H3651and flourishedיִפְרֹ֑ץyif.RotzH6555;so the Egyptians came to dreadוַיָּקֻ֕צוּ מִפְּנֵ֖יvai.ya.Ku.tzu mi.pe.NeiH6973 H6440the Israelitesבְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃be.Nei Yis.ra.'ElH1121 H3478.

13They workedוַיַּעֲבִ֧דוּ מִצְרַ֛יִםvai.ya.'a.Vi.du mitz.Ra.yimH5647 H4713אֶת־'et-H853the Israelitesבְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖לbe.Nei Yis.ra.'ElH1121 H3478ruthlesslyבְּפָֽרֶךְ׃be.Fa.rekhH6531

15Then the kingמֶ֣לֶךְMe.lekhH4428of Egyptמִצְרַ֔יִםmitz.Ra.yimH4714saidוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙vai.Yo.merH559to the Hebrewהָֽעִבְרִיֹּ֑תha.'iv.ri.YotH5680midwivesלַֽמְיַלְּדֹ֖תlam.ya.le.DotH3205,whoseאֲשֶׁ֨ר הָֽאַחַת֙'a.Sher ha.'a.ChatH259 H834names wereשֵׁ֤םshemH8034Shiphrahשִׁפְרָ֔ה וְשֵׁ֥םshif.Rah ve.ShemH8236 H8034andהַשֵּׁנִ֖יתha.she.NitH8145Puahפּוּעָֽה׃pu.'AhH6326,

16וַיֹּ֗אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559“When you help the Hebrewהָֽעִבְרִיּ֔וֹתha.'iv.ri.YotH5680women give birthבְּיַלֶּדְכֶן֙be.ya.led.KhenH3205אֶת־'et-H853,observeוּרְאִיתֶ֖ןu.re.'i.TenH7200themonעַל־'al-H5921the birthstoolsהָאָבְנָ֑יִםha.'a.ve.Na.yimH70.Ifאִם־'im-H518the childהוּא֙hu'H1931is a sonבֵּ֥ןbenH1121,killוַהֲמִתֶּ֣ןva.ha.mi.TenH4191himאֹת֔וֹ'o.ToH853;but ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518it isהִ֖יאhi'H1931a daughterבַּ֥תbatH1323,let her liveוָחָֽיָה׃va.Cha.yahH2421.”

17The midwives, howeverהַֽמְיַלְּדֹת֙ham.ya.le.DotH3205אֶת־'et-H853,fearedוַתִּירֶ֤אןָva.ti.Re.naH3372Godהָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔יםha.'E.lo.HimH430and did notוְלֹ֣אve.Lo'H3808doעָשׂ֔וּ'a.SuH6213asכַּאֲשֶׁ֛רka.'a.SherH834the kingמֶ֣לֶךְMe.lekhH4428of Egyptמִצְרָ֑יִםmitz.Ra.yimH4714had instructedדִּבֶּ֥ר אֲלֵיהֶ֖ןdi.Ber 'a.lei.HenH1696 H413;they let the boysהַיְלָדִֽים׃hay.la.DimH3206liveוַתְּחַיֶּ֖יןָva.te.chai.Yei.naH2421אֶת־'et-H853.

18So the kingמֶֽלֶךְ־Me.lekh-H4428of Egyptמִצְרַ֙יִם֙mitz.Ra.yimH4714summonedוַיִּקְרָ֤אvai.yik.Ra'H7121the midwivesלַֽמְיַלְּדֹ֔תlam.ya.le.DotH3205and askedוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559them, “Whyמַדּ֥וּעַma.Du.a'H4069have you doneעֲשִׂיתֶ֖ן הַדָּבָ֣ר'a.si.Ten ha.da.VarH6213 H1697thisהַזֶּ֑הha.ZehH2088?Why have you let the boysהַיְלָדִֽים׃hay.la.DimH3206liveוַתְּחַיֶּ֖יןָva.te.chai.Yei.naH2421אֶת־'et-H853?”

19The midwivesהַֽמְיַלְּדֹת֙ham.ya.le.DotH3205answeredוַתֹּאמַ֤רְןָ אֶל־va.to.Mar.na 'el-H559 H413Pharaohפַּרְעֹ֔הpar.'OhH6547, “The Hebrew womenכִּ֣י הָֽעִבְרִיֹּ֑תki ha.'iv.ri.YotH5680 H3588are notלֹ֧אlo'H3808like the Egyptianהַמִּצְרִיֹּ֖תha.mitz.ri.YotH4713womenכַנָּשִׁ֛יםkha.na.ShimH802,forכִּֽי־ki-H3588theyהֵ֔נָּהHe.nahH2007are vigorousחָי֣וֹתcha.YotH2422and give birthהַמְיַלֶּ֖דֶתham.ya.Le.detH3205beforeבְּטֶ֨רֶםbe.Te.remH2962a midwifeוְיָלָֽדוּ׃ve.ya.La.duH3205arrivesתָּב֧וֹא אֲלֵהֶ֛ןta.Vo' 'a.le.HenH935 H413.”

20So Godאֱלֹהִ֖ים'E.lo.HimH430was goodוַיֵּ֥יטֶבvai.Yei.tevH3190to the midwivesלַֽמְיַלְּדֹ֑תlam.ya.le.DotH3205,and the peopleהָעָ֛םha.'AmH5971multipliedוַיִּ֧רֶבvai.Yi.revH7235and became even moreמְאֹֽד׃me.'OdH3966numerousוַיַּֽעַצְמ֖וּvai.ya.'atz.MuH6105.

21וַיְהִ֕יvay.HiH1961And becauseכִּֽי־ki-H3588the midwivesהַֽמְיַלְּדֹ֖תham.ya.le.DotH3205אֶת־'et-H853fearedיָֽרְא֥וּya.re.'UH3372Godהָאֱלֹהִ֑יםha.'E.lo.HimH430,He gaveוַיַּ֥עַשׂvai.Ya.'asH6213themfamilies of their ownבָּתִּֽים׃ba.TimH1004.

22Then Pharaohפַּרְעֹ֔הpar.'OhH6547commandedוַיְצַ֣וvay.TzavH6680allלְכָל־le.kholH3605his peopleעַמּ֖וֹ לֵאמֹ֑רa.Mo le.MorH5971 H559: “Everyכָּל־kol-H3605sonהַבֵּ֣ןha.BenH1121bornהַיִּלּ֗וֹדhai.yi.LodH3209to the Hebrewsyou must throwתַּשְׁלִיכֻ֔הוּtash.li.Khu.huH7993into the Nileהַיְאֹ֙רָה֙hay.'O.rahH2975,but everyוְכָל־ve.kholH3605daughterהַבַּ֖תha.BatH1323you may allow to liveתְּחַיּֽוּן׃ סte.chai.YunH2421.”
