4And whenever the dayהַיּ֔וֹםhai.YomH3117cameוַיְהִ֣יvay.HiH1961for Elkanahאֶלְקָנָ֑ה'el.ka.NahH511to present his sacrificeוַיִּזְבַּ֖חvai.yiz.BachH2076,he would giveוְנָתַ֞ןve.na.TanH5414portionsמָנֽוֹת׃ma.NotH4490to his wifeאִשְׁתּ֗וֹ'ish.ToH802Peninnahלִפְנִנָּ֣הlif.ni.NahH6444and to allוּֽלְכָל־u.le.khol-H3605her sonsבָּנֶ֛יהָba.Nei.haH1121and daughtersוּבְנוֹתֶ֖יהָu.ve.no.Tei.haH1323.

5But to Hannahוּלְחַנָּ֕הu.le.cha.NahH2584he would giveיִתֵּ֛ןyi.TenH5414aאַחַ֖ת'a.ChatH259doubleאַפָּ֑יִם'a.Pa.yimH639portionמָנָ֥הma.NahH4490,forכִּ֤יkiH3588אֶת־'et-H853he lovedאָהֵ֔ב'a.HevH157herחַנָּה֙cha.NahH2584even though the LORDוַֽיהוָ֖הva.Yah.wehH3068had closedסָגַ֥רsa.GarH5462her wombרַחְמָֽהּ׃rach.MahH7358.

6Becauseכִּֽי־ki-H3588the LORDיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068had closedסָגַ֥רsa.GarH5462Hannah’swombבְּעַ֥ד רַחְמָֽהּ׃be.'Ad rach.MahH1157 H7358,her rivalצָֽרָתָהּ֙ גַּם־tza.ra.Tah gam-H6869 H1571בַּעֲב֖וּרba.'a.VurH5668would provoke herהַרְּעִמָ֑הּha.re.'i.MahH7481viciouslyכַּ֔עַסKa.'asH3708to taunt herוְכִֽעֲסַ֤תָּהve.khi.'a.Sa.tahH3707.

7And this went onוְכֵ֨ן יַעֲשֶׂ֜הve.Khen ya.'a.SehH3651 H6213yearשָׁנָ֣הsha.NahH8141after yearבְשָׁנָ֗הve.sha.NahH8141.Wheneverמִדֵּ֤יmi.DeiH1767Hannahwent upעֲלֹתָהּ֙'a.lo.TahH5927to the houseבְּבֵ֣יתbe.VeitH1004of the LORDיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068כֵּ֖ןkenH3651, her rivaltaunted herתַּכְעִסֶ֑נָּהtakh.'i.Se.nahH3707until she weptוַתִּבְכֶּ֖הva.tiv.KehH1058and would notוְלֹ֥אve.Lo'H3808eatתֹאכַֽל׃to.KhalH398.

8“Hannahחַנָּה֙cha.NahH2584,whyלָ֣מֶהLa.mehH4100are you cryingתִבְכִּ֗יtiv.KiH1058?”her husbandאִישָׁ֗הּ'i.ShahH376Elkanahאֶלְקָנָ֣ה'el.ka.NahH511askedוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559. “Whyוְלָ֙מֶה֙ve.La.mehH4100won’t youלֹ֣אlo'H3808eatתֹֽאכְלִ֔יtokh.LiH398?Whyוְלָ֖מֶהve.La.mehH4100is your heartלְבָבֵ֑ךְle.va.VekhH3824so grievedיֵרַ֣עye.Ra'H3415?Am Iאָֽנֹכִי֙'a.no.KhiH595notהֲל֤וֹאha.Lo'H3808betterט֣וֹבTovH2896to youthan tenמֵעֲשָׂרָ֖הme.'a.sa.RahH6235sonsבָּנִֽים׃ba.NimH1121?”

9So afterאַחֲרֵ֛י'a.cha.ReiH310they had finished eatingאָכְלָ֥ה'a.khe.LahH398and drinkingשָׁתֹ֑הsha.TohH8354in Shilohבְשִׁלֹ֖הve.shi.LohH7887,Hannahחַנָּ֔הcha.NahH2584stood upוַתָּ֣קָם וְאַחֲרֵ֣יva.Ta.kom ve.'a.cha.ReiH6965 H310.Now Eliוְעֵלִ֣יve.'e.LiH5941the priestהַכֹּהֵ֗ןha.ko.HenH3548was sittingיֹשֵׁב֙yo.ShevH3427onעַל־'al-H5921a chairהַכִּסֵּ֔אha.ki.Se'H3678byעַל־'al-H5921the doorpostמְזוּזַ֖תme.zu.ZatH4201of the templeהֵיכַ֥לhei.KhalH1964of the LORDיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068.

10וְהִ֖יאve.Hi'H1931In her bitter distressמָ֣רַת נָ֑פֶשׁMa.rat Na.feshH4751 H5315,Hannah prayedוַתִּתְפַּלֵּ֥לva.tit.pa.LelH6419toעַל־'al-H5921the LORDיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068and wept with many tearsH1058.

11And she madeוַתִּדֹּ֨רva.ti.DorH5087a vowנֶ֜דֶרNe.derH5088,sayingוַתֹּאמַ֗רva.to.MarH559, “O LORDיְהוָ֨הYah.wehH3068of Hostsצְבָא֜וֹתtze.va.'otH6635,ifאִם־'im-H518only You will lookH7200upon the afflictionבָּעֳנִ֣יbo.'o.NiH6040of Your maidservantאֲמָתֶ֗ךָ'a.ma.Te.khaH519and remember meוּזְכַרְתַּ֙נִי֙u.ze.khar.Ta.niH2142,notוְלֹֽא־ve.lo'-H3808forgettingתִשְׁכַּ֣חtish.KachH7911Your maidservantאֶת־'et-H853but givingאֲמָתֶ֔ךָ וְנָתַתָּ֥ה'a.ma.Te.kha ve.na.ta.TahH5414 H519herלַאֲמָתְךָ֖la.'a.ma.te.KhaH519a sonזֶ֣רַע אֲנָשִׁ֑יםZe.ra' 'a.na.ShimH2233 H582,then I will dedicate himוּנְתַתִּ֤יוu.ne.ta.TivH5414to the LORDלַֽיהוָה֙la.Yah.wehH3068allכָּל־kol-H3605the daysיְמֵ֣יye.MeiH3117of his lifeחַיָּ֔יוchai.YavH2416,and noלֹא־lo'-H3808razorוּמוֹרָ֖הu.mo.RahH4177shall ever touchיַעֲלֶ֥ה עַל־ya.'a.Leh 'al-H5927 H5921his headרֹאשֽׁוֹ׃ro.ShoH7218.”

12וְהָיָה֙ve.ha.YahH1961Asכִּ֣יkiH3588Hannahkept onהִרְבְּתָ֔הhir.be.TahH7235prayingלְהִתְפַּלֵּ֖לle.hit.pa.LelH6419beforeלִפְנֵ֣יlif.NeiH6440the LORDיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068,Eliוְעֵלִ֖יve.'e.LiH5941watchedשֹׁמֵ֥רsho.MerH8104אֶת־'et-H853her mouthפִּֽיהָ׃Pi.haH6310.

13Hannahוְחַנָּ֗ה הִ֚יאve.cha.Nah hi'H2584 H1931was prayingמְדַבֶּ֣רֶתme.da.Be.retH1696inעַל־'al-H5921her heartלִבָּ֔הּli.BahH3820,and thoughרַ֚קrakH7535her lipsשְׂפָתֶ֣יהָse.fa.Tei.haH8193were movingנָּע֔וֹתna.'otH5128,her voiceוְקוֹלָ֖הּve.ko.LahH6963could notלֹ֣אlo'H3808be heardיִשָּׁמֵ֑עַyi.sha.Me.a'H8085.So Eliעֵלִ֖י'e.LiH5941thoughtוַיַּחְשְׁבֶ֥הָvai.yach.she.Ve.haH2803she was drunkלְשִׁכֹּרָֽה׃le.shi.ko.RahH7910

14and saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to herאֵלֶ֙יהָ֙ עֵלִ֔י'e.Lei.ha 'e.LiH413 H5941, “Howעַד־'ad-H5704longמָתַ֖יma.TaiH4970will you be drunkתִּשְׁתַּכָּרִ֑יןtish.ta.ka.RinH7937?Put awayהָסִ֥ירִיha.Si.riH5493אֶת־'et-H853your wineיֵינֵ֖ךְ מֵעָלָֽיִךְ׃yei.Nekh me.'a.La.yikhH3196 H5921!”

15“Noלֹ֣אlo'H3808,my lordאֲדֹנִ֔י'a.do.NiH113,”Hannahחַנָּ֤ה וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙cha.Nah va.To.merH2584 H559repliedוַתַּ֨עַןva.Ta.'anH6030. “Iאָנֹ֔כִי'a.No.khiH595am a womanאִשָּׁ֤ה'i.ShahH802troubledקְשַׁת־ke.shat-H7186in spiritר֙וּחַ֙Ru.achH7307.I have notלֹ֣אlo'H3808hadשָׁתִ֑יתִיsha.Ti.tiH8354any wineוְיַ֥יִןve.Ya.yinH3196or strong drinkוְשֵׁכָ֖רve.she.KharH7941,but I have poured outוָאֶשְׁפֹּ֥ךְva.'esh.PokhH8210אֶת־'et-H853my soulנַפְשִׁ֖יnaf.ShiH5315beforeלִפְנֵ֥יlif.NeiH6440the LORDיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068.

16Do notאַל־'al-H408takeתִּתֵּן֙ti.TenH5414אֶת־'et-H853לִפְנֵ֖יlif.NeiH6440your servantאֲמָ֣תְךָ֔'a.Ma.te.khaH519for a wickedבְּלִיָּ֑עַל כִּֽי־be.li.Ya.'al ki-H1100 H3588womanבַּת־bat-H1323,for all this timeעַד־ הֵֽנָּה׃'ad- He.nahH5704 H2008I have been prayingדִּבַּ֥רְתִּיdi.Bar.tiH1696out of the depthמֵרֹ֥בme.RoH7230of my anguishשִׂיחִ֛יsi.ChiH7879and griefוְכַעְסִ֖יve.kha'.SiH3708.”

17“Goלְכִ֣יle.KhiH1980in peaceלְשָׁל֑וֹםle.sha.LomH7965,”Eliעֵלִ֛י וַיֹּ֖אמֶר'e.Li vai.Yo.merH5941 H559repliedוַיַּ֧עַןvai.Ya.'anH6030, “and may the Godוֵאלֹהֵ֣יve.lo.HeiH430of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֗לYis.ra.'ElH3478grantיִתֵּן֙yi.TenH5414אֶת־'et-H853the petitionשֵׁ֣לָתֵ֔ךְshe.la.TekhH7596אֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834you have askedשָׁאַ֖לְתְּsha.'AltH7592of Himמֵעִמּֽוֹ׃me.'i.MoH5973.”

18“May your maidservantשִׁפְחָתְךָ֛shif.cha.te.KhaH8198findתִּמְצָ֧אtim.Tza'H4672favorחֵ֖ןchenH2580with youבְּעֵינֶ֑יךָbe.'ei.Nei.khaH5869,”said Hannahוַתֹּ֕אמֶרva.To.merH559.Thenהָאִשָּׁ֤הha.'i.ShahH802shewentוַתֵּ֨לֶךְva.Te.lekhH1980on her wayלְדַרְכָּהּ֙le.dar.KahH1870,and she began to eatוַתֹּאכַ֔לva.to.KhalH398,and her faceוּפָנֶ֥יהָu.fa.Nei.haH6440was noלֹא־lo'-H3808longerעֽוֹד׃odH5750downcastהָיוּ־ha.yu-H1961.

The Birth of Samuel

19The next morningבַבֹּ֗קֶרva.Bo.kerH1242they got up earlyוַיַּשְׁכִּ֣מוּvai.yash.Ki.muH7925to bow in worshipוַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲווּ֙vai.yish.ta.cha.VuH7812beforeלִפְנֵ֣יlif.NeiH6440the LORDיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068,and then they returnedוַיָּשֻׁ֛בוּ וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ אֶל־vai.ya.Shu.vu vai.ya.Vo.'u 'el-H7725 H935 H413homeבֵּיתָ֖םbei.TamH1004to Ramahהָרָמָ֑תָהha.ra.Ma.tahH7414.And Elkanahאֶלְקָנָה֙'el.ka.NahH511אֶת־'et-H853had relations withוַיֵּ֤דַעvai.Ye.da'H3045his wifeאִשְׁתּ֔וֹ'ish.ToH802Hannahחַנָּ֣הcha.NahH2584,and the LORDיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068remembered herוַיִּֽזְכְּרֶ֖הָvai.yiz.ke.Re.haH2142.

20Soוַיְהִי֙vay.HiH1961in the courseלִתְקֻפ֣וֹתlit.ku.FotH8622of timeהַיָּמִ֔יםhai.ya.MimH3117,Hannahחַנָּ֖הcha.NahH2584conceivedוַתַּ֥הַרva.Ta.harH2029and gave birth toוַתֵּ֣לֶדva.Te.ledH3205a sonבֵּ֑ןBenH1121.She namedוַתִּקְרָ֤אva.tik.Ra'H7121אֶת־'et-H853himשְׁמוֹ֙she.MoH8034Samuelשְׁמוּאֵ֔לshe.mu.'ElH8050, saying, “Becauseכִּ֥יkiH3588I have asked for himשְׁאִלְתִּֽיו׃she.'il.TivH7592from the LORDמֵיְהוָ֖הme.Yah.wehH3068.”

21Then Elkanahאֶלְקָנָ֖ה'el.ka.NahH511and allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605his houseבֵּית֑וֹbei.ToH1004went upוַיַּ֛עַל הָאִ֥ישׁvai.Ya.'al ha.'IshH5927 H376to makeלִזְבֹּ֧חַliz.Bo.achH2076the annualהַיָּמִ֖יםhai.ya.MimH3117sacrificeזֶ֥בַחZe.vachH2077to the LORDלַֽיהוָ֛הla.Yah.wehH3068andאֶת־'et-H853to fulfillhis vowנִדְרֽוֹ׃nid.RoH5088וְאֶת־ve.'EtH853,

22but Hannahוְחַנָּ֖הve.cha.NahH2584did notלֹ֣אlo'H3808goעָלָ֑תָה'a.La.tahH5927כִּֽי־ki-H3588. “Afterעַ֣ד'adH5704the boyהַנַּ֙עַר֙ha.Na.'arH5288is weanedיִגָּמֵ֤לyi.ga.MelH1580,”she saidאָמְרָ֣ה'a.me.RahH559to her husbandלְאִישָׁ֗הּle.'i.ShahH376, “I will take himוַהֲבִאֹתִ֗יוva.ha.vi.'o.TivH935to appearוְנִרְאָה֙ אֶת־ve.nir.'Ah 'et-H7200 H854beforeפְּנֵ֣יpe.NeiH6440the LORDיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068and to stayוְיָ֥שַׁבve.Ya.shavH3427thereשָׁ֖םshamH8033permanentlyעַד־ עוֹלָֽם׃'ad- o.LamH5704 H5769.”

23“Doעֲשִׂ֧י'a.SiH6213what you thinkבְּעֵינַ֗יִךְbe.'ei.Na.yikhH5869is bestהַטּ֣וֹבha.TovH2896,”her husbandאִישָׁ֜הּ'i.ShahH376Elkanahאֶלְקָנָ֨ה'el.ka.NahH511repliedוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “and stayשְׁבִי֙she.ViH3427here untilעַד־'ad-H5704you have weaned himגָּמְלֵ֣ךְga.me.LekhH1580אֹת֔וֹ'o.ToH853.Onlyאַ֛ךְ'akhH389may the LORDיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068אֶת־'et-H853confirmיָקֵ֥םya.KemH6965His wordדְּבָר֑וֹde.va.RoH1697.”So Hannahהָֽאִשָּׁה֙ha.'i.ShahH802stayedוַתֵּ֤שֶׁבva.Te.shevH3427and nursedוַתֵּ֣ינֶקva.Tei.nekH3243אֶת־'et-H853her sonבְּנָ֔הּbe.NahH1121untilעַד־'ad-H5704she had weanedגָּמְלָ֖הּga.me.LahH1580himאֹתֽוֹ׃'o.ToH853.

24Onceכַּאֲשֶׁ֣רka.'a.SherH834she had weaned himגְּמָלַ֗תּוּge.ma.La.tuH1580, Hannahtookוַתַּעֲלֵ֨הוּva.ta.'a.Le.huH5927the boywith herעִמָּ֜הּ'i.MahH5973,along with a three-year-oldשְׁלֹשָׁה֙she.lo.ShahH7969bullבְּפָרִ֤יםbe.fa.RimH6499,an ephahוְאֵיפָ֨ה אַחַ֥תve.'ei.Fah 'a.ChatH374 H259of flourקֶ֙מַח֙ke.machH7058,and a skinוְנֵ֣בֶלve.Ne.velH5035of wineיַ֔יִןYa.yinH3196.Though the boyוְהַנַּ֖עַרve.ha.Na.'arH5288was still youngנָֽעַר׃Na.'arH5288,she brought himוַתְּבִאֵ֥הוּva.te.vi.'E.huH935to the houseבֵית־veit-H1004of the LORDיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068at Shilohשִׁל֑וֹshi.LoH7887.

25And when they had slaughteredוַֽיִּשְׁחֲט֖וּvai.yish.cha.TuH7819אֶת־'et-H853the bullהַפָּ֑רha.ParH6499,they broughtוַיָּבִ֥יאוּvai.ya.Vi.'uH935אֶת־'et-H853the boyהַנַּ֖עַרha.Na.'arH5288toאֶל־'el-H413Eliעֵלִֽי׃'e.LiH5941.

26“Pleaseבִּ֣יbiH994,my lordאֲדֹנִ֔י'a.do.NiH113,”saidוַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙va.To.merH559Hannah, “as surely as youנַפְשְׁךָ֖naf.she.KhaH5315liveחֵ֥יcheiH2416,my lordאֲדֹנִ֑י'a.do.NiH113,Iאֲנִ֣י'a.NiH589am the womanהָאִשָּׁ֗הha.'i.ShahH802who stoodהַנִּצֶּ֤בֶתha.ni.Tze.vetH5324hereבָּזֶ֔הba.ZehH2088besideעִמְּכָה֙'i.me.KhahH5973you prayingלְהִתְפַּלֵּ֖לle.hit.pa.LelH6419toאֶל־'el-H413the LORDיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068.

27I prayedהִתְפַּלָּ֑לְתִּיhit.pa.Lal.tiH6419forאֶל־'el-H413thisהַזֶּ֖הha.ZehH2088boyהַנַּ֥עַרha.Na.'arH5288,and since the LORDיְהוָ֥הYah.wehH3068has grantedוַיִּתֵּ֨ןvai.yi.TenH5414meאֶת־'et-H853שְׁאֵ֣לָתִ֔יshe.'E.la.TiH7596whatאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834I askedשָׁאַ֖לְתִּיsha.'Al.tiH7592of Himמֵעִמּֽוֹ׃me.'i.MoH5973,

28Iאָנֹכִ֗י'a.no.KhiH595nowוְגַ֣םve.GamH1571dedicate the boyהִשְׁאִלְתִּ֙הוּ֙hish.'il.Ti.huH7592to the LORDלַֽיהוָ֔הla.Yah.wehH3068.For asכָּל־ הַיָּמִים֙kol- hai.ya.MimH3605 H3117אֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834long as he livesהָיָ֔הha.YahH1961,heה֥וּאhu'H1931is dedicatedשָׁא֖וּלsha.'UlH7592to the LORDלַֽיהוָ֑הla.Yah.wehH3068.”So they worshipedוַיִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּvai.yish.Ta.chuH7812the LORDלַיהוָֽה׃ פla.Yah.wehH3068thereשָׁ֖םshamH8033.
