2The priestsהַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔יםha.Ko.ha.NimH3548were unableוְלֹ֤א יָֽכְלוּ֙ve.Lo' ya.khe.LuH3808 H3201to enterלָב֖וֹא אֶל־la.Vo' 'el-H935 H413the houseבֵּ֣יתbeitH1004of the LORDיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068,becauseכִּֽי־ki-H3588the gloryכְבוֹד־khe.Vod-H3519of the LORDיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068אֶת־'et-H853had filledמָלֵ֥אma.Le'H4390itבֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃beit Yah.wehH1004 H3068.

The LORD’s Response to Solomon

(1 Kings 9:1–9)

11When Solomonשְׁלֹמֹ֛הshe.lo.MohH8010אֶת־'et-H853had finishedוַיְכַ֧לvay.KhalH3615the houseבֵּ֥יתbeitH1004of the LORDיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068andוְאֶת־ve.'EtH853the royalהַמֶּ֑לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428וְאֵ֨תve.'EtH853palaceבֵּ֣יתbeitH1004,successfullyהִצְלִֽיחַ׃ פhitz.Li.achH6743carrying outהַבָּ֜אha.Ba'H935allכָּל־kol-H3605that was inעַל־'al-H5921hisשְׁלֹמֹ֗הshe.lo.MohH8010heartלֵ֣בlevH3820to doלַעֲשׂ֧וֹתla.'a.SotH6213for the houseבְּבֵית־be.veit-H1004of the LORDיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068and for his own palaceוּבְבֵית֖וֹu.ve.vei.ToH1004,

12the LORDיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068appearedוַיֵּרָ֧אvai.ye.Ra'H7200toאֶל־'el-H413himשְׁלֹמֹ֖הshe.lo.MohH8010at nightבַּלָּ֑יְלָהba.La.ye.lahH3915and saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him: “I have heardשָׁמַ֙עְתִּי֙sha.Ma'.tiH8085אֶת־'et-H853your prayerתְּפִלָּתֶ֔ךָte.fi.la.Te.khaH8605and have chosenוּבָחַ֜רְתִּיu.va.Char.tiH977thisהַזֶּ֛הha.ZehH2088placeבַּמָּק֥וֹםba.ma.KomH4725for Myselfas a houseלְבֵ֥יתle.VeitH1004of sacrificeזָֽבַח׃Za.vachH2077.

13Ifהֵ֣ןhenH2005I closeאֶֽעֱצֹ֤ר'e.'e.TzorH6113the skyהַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ha.sha.Ma.yimH8064so there isיִהְיֶ֣הyih.YehH1961noוְלֹֽא־ve.lo'-H3808rainמָטָ֔רma.TarH4306,or ifוְהֵן־ve.hen-H2005I commandאֲצַוֶּ֥ה עַל־'a.tza.Veh 'al-H6680 H5921the locustחָגָ֖בcha.GavH2284to devourלֶאֱכ֣וֹלle.'e.KholH398the landהָאָ֑רֶץha.'A.retzH776,or ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518I sendאֲשַׁלַּ֥ח'a.sha.LachH7971a plagueדֶּ֖בֶרDe.verH1698among My peopleבְּעַמִּֽי׃be.'a.MiH5971,

14and if My peopleעַמִּ֜י'a.MiH5971whoאֲשֶׁ֧ר'a.SherH834are calledנִֽקְרָא־nik.ra'-H7121byעֲלֵיהֶ֗ם'a.lei.HemH5921My nameשְׁמִ֣יshe.MiH8034humble themselvesוְיִכָּנְע֨וּve.yi.ka.ne.'UH3665and prayוְיִֽתְפַּֽלְלוּ֙ve.yit.pa.LuH6419and seekוִֽיבַקְשׁ֣וּvi.vak.ShuH1245My faceפָנַ֔יfa.NaiH6440and turnוְיָשֻׁ֖בוּve.ya.Shu.vuH7725fromמִן־min-H4480their wickedהָרָעִ֑יםha.ra.'ImH7451waysמִדַּרְכֵיהֶ֣םmi.dar.khei.HemH1870,then Iוַאֲנִי֙va.'a.NiH589will hearאֶשְׁמַ֣ע'esh.Ma'H8085from heavenהַשָּׁמַ֔יִםha.sha.Ma.yimH8064,forgiveוְאֶסְלַח֙ve.'es.LachH5545their sinלְחַטָּאתָ֔םle.cha.ta.TamH2403,and healוְאֶרְפָּ֖אve.'er.Pa'H7495אֶת־'et-H853their landאַרְצָֽם׃'ar.TzamH776.

15Nowעַתָּ֗ה'a.TahH6258My eyesעֵינַי֙'ei.NaiH5869will beיִהְי֣וּyih.YuH1961openפְתֻח֔וֹתfe.tu.ChotH6605and My earsוְאָזְנַ֖יve.'a.ze.NaiH241attentiveקַשֻּׁב֑וֹתka.shu.VotH7183to the prayers offeredלִתְפִלַּ֖תlit.fi.LatH8605in thisהַזֶּֽה׃ha.ZehH2088placeהַמָּק֥וֹםha.ma.KomH4725.

16For I have now chosenוְעַתָּ֗ה בָּחַ֤רְתִּיve.'a.Tah ba.Char.tiH6258 H977and consecratedוְהִקְדַּ֙שְׁתִּי֙ve.hik.Dash.tiH6942אֶת־'et-H853thisהַזֶּ֔הha.ZehH2088templeהַבַּ֣יִתha.Ba.yitH1004so that My Nameשְׁמִ֥יshe.MiH8034may beלִהְיוֹת־lih.yot-H1961thereשָׁ֖םshamH8033foreverעַד־ עוֹלָ֑ם'ad- o.LamH5704 H5769.My eyesעֵינַ֧י'ei.NaiH5869and My heartוְלִבִּ֛יve.li.BiH3820will beוְהָי֨וּve.ha.YuH1961thereשָׁ֖םshamH8033for all timeכָּל־ הַיָּמִֽים׃kol- hai.ya.MimH3605 H3117.

17And as for youוְאַתָּ֞הve.'a.TahH859,ifאִם־'im-H518you walkתֵּלֵ֣ךְte.LekhH1980before Meלְפָנַ֗יle.fa.NaiH6440asכַּאֲשֶׁ֤רka.'a.SherH834your fatherאָבִ֔יךָ'a.Vi.khaH1Davidדָּוִ֣ידda.VidH1732walkedהָלַךְ֙ha.laKhH1980,doingוְלַעֲשׂ֕וֹתve.la.'a.SotH6213allכְּכֹ֖לke.KholH3605אֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834I have commanded youצִוִּיתִ֑יךָtzi.vi.Ti.khaH6680,and if you keepתִּשְׁמֽוֹר׃tish.MorH8104My statutesוְחֻקַּ֥יve.chu.KaiH2706and ordinancesוּמִשְׁפָּטַ֖יu.mish.pa.TaiH4941,

18then I will establishוַהֲקִ֣ימוֹתִ֔יva.ha.Ki.mo.TiH6965אֵ֖ת'etH853your royalמַלְכוּתֶ֑ךָmal.khu.Te.khaH4438throneכִּסֵּ֣אki.Se'H3678,asכַּאֲשֶׁ֣רka.'a.SherH834I covenantedכָּרַ֗תִּיka.Ra.tiH3772with your fatherאָבִ֙יךָ֙'a.Vi.khaH1Davidלְדָוִ֤ידle.da.VidH1732when I saidלֵאמֹ֔רle.MorH559, ‘You will neverלֹֽא־lo'-H3808failיִכָּרֵ֤תyi.ka.RetH3772to have a manאִ֔ישׁ'IshH376to ruleמוֹשֵׁ֖לmo.ShelH4910over Israelבְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃be.Yis.ra.'ElH3478.’

19But ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518youאַתֶּ֔ם'a.TemH859turn awayתְּשׁוּב֣וּןte.shu.VunH7725and forsakeוַעֲזַבְתֶּם֙va.'a.zav.TemH5800the statutesחֻקּוֹתַ֣יchu.ko.TaiH2708and commandmentsוּמִצְוֹתַ֔יu.mitz.vo.TaiH4687אֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834I have setנָתַ֖תִּיna.Ta.tiH5414before youלִפְנֵיכֶ֑םlif.nei.KhemH6440,and if you go offוַהֲלַכְתֶּ֗םva.ha.lakh.TemH1980to serveוַעֲבַדְתֶּם֙va.'a.vad.TemH5647and worshipוְהִשְׁתַּחֲוִיתֶ֖םve.hish.ta.cha.vi.TemH7812otherאֲחֵרִ֔ים'a.che.RimH312godsאֱלֹהִ֣ים'E.lo.HimH430,

20then I will uproot Israelוּנְתַשְׁתִּ֗יםu.ne.tash.TimH5428fromמֵעַ֤לme.'AlH5921the soilאַדְמָתִי֙'ad.ma.TiH127אֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834I have givenנָתַ֣תִּיna.Ta.tiH5414them,and I will banishאַשְׁלִ֖יךְ'ash.LikhH7993fromמֵעַ֣לme.'AlH5921My presenceפָּנָ֑יpa.NaiH6440וְאֶת־ve.'EtH853thisהַזֶּה֙ha.ZehH2088templeהַבַּ֤יִתha.Ba.yitH1004אֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834I have sanctifiedהִקְדַּ֣שְׁתִּיhik.Dash.tiH6942for My Nameלִשְׁמִ֔יlish.MiH8034.I will make itוְאֶתְּנֶ֛נּוּve.'et.te.Ne.nuH5414an object of scornלְמָשָׁ֥לle.ma.ShalH4912and ridiculeוְלִשְׁנִינָ֖הve.lish.ni.NahH8148among allבְּכָל־be.kholH3605the peoplesהָעַמִּֽים׃ha.'a.MimH5971.

21And when thisהַזֶּה֙ha.ZehH2088templeוְהַבַּ֤יִתve.ha.Ba.yitH1004אֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834has becomeהָיָ֣הha.YahH1961a heap of rubbleעֶלְי֔וֹןel.YonH5945,allלְכָל־le.kholH3605who passעֹבֵ֥ר'o.VerH5674by itעָלָ֖יו'a.LavH5921will be appalledיִשֹּׁ֑םyi.ShomH8074and sayוְאָמַ֗רve.'a.MarH559, ‘Whyבַּמֶּ֨הba.MehH4100has the LORDיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068doneעָשָׂ֤ה'a.SahH6213such a thingכָּ֔כָהKa.khahH3602to thisהַזֹּ֖אתha.ZotH2063landלָאָ֥רֶץla.'A.retzH776and to thisהַזֶּֽה׃ha.ZehH2088templeוְלַבַּ֥יִתve.la.Ba.yitH1004?’

22And others will answerוְאָמְר֗וּve.'a.me.RuH559, ‘Becauseעַל֩'alH5921אֲשֶׁ֨ר'a.SherH834they have forsakenעָֽזְב֜וּ'a.ze.VuH5800אֶת־'et-H853the LORDיְהוָ֣ה׀Yah.wehH3068,the Godאֱלֹהֵ֣י'e.lo.HeiH430of their fathersאֲבֹתֵיהֶ֗ם'a.vo.tei.HemH1,whoאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834brought themהוֹצִיאָם֮ho.tzi.'AmH3318out of the landמֵאֶ֣רֶץme.'E.retzH776of Egyptמִצְרַיִם֒mitz.ra.YimH4714,and have embracedוַֽיַּחֲזִ֙יקוּ֙vai.ya.cha.Zi.kuH2388otherאֲחֵרִ֔ים'a.che.RimH312godsבֵּאלֹהִ֣יםbe.lo.HimH430,worshipingוַיִּשְׁתַּחֲו֥וּvai.yish.ta.cha.VuH7812and serving themוַיַּֽעַבְד֑וּםvai.ya.'av.DumH5647—because ofעַל־'al-H5921thisכֵּן֙kenH3651,He has broughtהֵבִ֣יאhe.Vi'H935allכָּל־kol-H3605thisהַזֹּֽאת׃ פha.ZotH2063disasterהָרָעָ֖הha.ra.'AhH7451upon themעֲלֵיהֶ֔ם'a.lei.HemH5921אֵ֥ת'etH853.’”
