2 Chronicles 7

(Psalm 136:1–26)

1When SolomonH8010 had finishedH3615 prayingH6419, fireH784 came downH3381 from heavenH8064 and consumedH398 the burnt offeringH5930 and the sacrificesH2077, and the gloryH3519 of the LORDH3068 filledH4390 the templeH1004. 2The priestsH3548 were unableH3808H3201 to enterH935H413 the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, becauseH3588 the gloryH3519 of the LORDH3068 had filledH4390 it.

3When allH3605 the IsraelitesH1121H3478 sawH7200 the fireH784 coming downH3381 and the gloryH3519 of the LORDH3068 aboveH5921 the templeH1004, they bowed downH3766 onH5921 the pavementH7531 with their facesH639 to the groundH776, and they worshipedH7812 and gave thanksH3034 to the LORDH3068:

“ForH3588 He is goodH2896;His loving devotionH2617 endures foreverH5769.”

Sacrifices of Dedication

(1 Kings 8:62–66)

4Then the kingH4428 and allH3605 the peopleH5971 offeredH2076 sacrificesH2077 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068. 5And KingH4428 SolomonH8010 offeredH2076 a sacrificeH2077 of 22,000H6242H8147H505 oxenH1241 and 120,000H3967H6242H505 sheepH6629. So the kingH4428 and allH3605 the peopleH5971 dedicatedH2596 the houseH1004 of GodH430.

6The priestsH3548 stoodH5975 atH5921 their postsH4931, as did the LevitesH3881 with the musicalH7892 instrumentsH3627 of the LORDH3068, whichH834 KingH4428 DavidH1732 had madeH6213 for giving thanksH3034 to the LORDH3068 and with which DavidH1732 had offered praise, sayingH1984, “ForH3588 His loving devotionH2617 endures foreverH5769.” Across from the LevitesH5048, the priestsH3548 sounded trumpetsH2690, and allH3605 the IsraelitesH3478 were standingH5975.

7Then SolomonH8010 consecratedH6942 the middleH8432 of the courtyardH2691 in frontH6440 of the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, andH3588 thereH8033 he offeredH6213 the burnt offeringsH5930 and the fatH2459 of the peace offeringsH8002, sinceH3588 the bronzeH5178 altarH4196 he had madeH6213 couldH3201 notH3808 holdH3557 all these offerings.

8So at thatH1931 timeH6256 SolomonH8010 and allH3605 IsraelH3478 with himH5973—a veryH3966 greatH1419 assembly of peopleH6951 from Lebo-hamathH935H2574 toH5704 the BrookH5158 of EgyptH4714—keptH6213 the feastH22821 for sevenH7651 daysH3117. 9On the eighthH8066 dayH3117 they heldH6213 a solemn assemblyH6116, forH3588 the dedicationH2598 of the altarH4196H6213 had lasted sevenH7651 daysH3117, and the feastH2282 sevenH7651 days moreH3117.

10On the twenty-thirdH6242H7969 dayH3117 of the seventhH7637 monthH2320, Solomon sent the peopleH5971 awayH7971 to their homesH168, joyfulH8056 and gladH2896 of heartH3820 forH5921 the good thingsH2896 thatH834 the LORDH3068 had doneH6213 for DavidH1732, for SolomonH8010, and for His peopleH5971 IsraelH3478.

The LORD’s Response to Solomon

(1 Kings 9:1–9)

11When SolomonH8010 had finishedH3615 the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068 andH853 the royalH4428 palaceH1004, successfullyH6743 carrying outH935 allH3605 that was inH5921 his heartH3820 to doH6213 for the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068 and for his own palaceH1004, 12the LORDH3068 appearedH7200 toH413 him at nightH3915 and saidH559 to him:

“I have heardH8085 your prayerH8605 and have chosenH977 thisH2088 placeH4725 for Myself as a houseH1004 of sacrificeH2077. 13IfH2005 I closeH6113 the skyH8064 so there isH1961 noH3808 rainH4306, or ifH2005 I commandH6680H5921 the locustH2284 to devourH398 the landH776, or ifH518 I sendH7971 a plagueH1698 among My peopleH5971, 14and if My peopleH5971 whoH834 are calledH7121 byH5921 My nameH8034 humble themselvesH3665 and prayH6419 and seekH1245 My faceH6440 and turnH7725 fromH4480 their wickedH7451 waysH1870, then IH589 will hearH8085 from heavenH8064, forgiveH5545 their sinH2403, and healH7495 their landH776.

15NowH6258 My eyesH5869 will beH1961 openH6605 and My earsH241 attentiveH7183 to the prayers offeredH8605 in thisH2088 placeH4725. 16For I have now chosenH6258H977 and consecratedH6942 thisH2088 templeH1004 so that My NameH8034 may beH1961 thereH8033 foreverH5704H5769. My eyesH5869 and My heartH3820 will beH1961 thereH8033 for all timeH3605H3117.

17And as for youH859, ifH518 you walkH1980 before MeH6440 asH834 your fatherH1 DavidH1732 walkedH1980, doingH6213 allH3605 I have commanded youH6680, and if you keepH8104 My statutesH2706 and ordinancesH4941, 18then I will establishH6965 your royalH4438 throneH3678, asH834 I covenantedH3772 with your fatherH1 DavidH1732 when I saidH559, ‘You will neverH3808 failH3772 to have a manH376 to ruleH4910 over IsraelH3478.’

19But ifH518 youH859 turn awayH7725 and forsakeH5800 the statutesH2708 and commandmentsH4687 I have setH5414 before youH6440, and if you go offH1980 to serveH5647 and worshipH7812 otherH312 godsH430, 20then I will uproot IsraelH5428 fromH5921 the soilH127 I have givenH5414 them, and I will banishH7993 fromH5921 My presenceH6440 thisH2088 templeH1004 I have sanctifiedH6942 for My NameH8034. I will make itH5414 an object of scornH4912 and ridiculeH8148 among allH3605 the peoplesH5971.

21And when thisH2088 templeH1004 has becomeH1961 a heap of rubbleH5945,2 allH3605 who passH5674 by itH5921 will be appalledH8074 and sayH559, ‘WhyH4100 has the LORDH3068 doneH6213 such a thingH3602 to thisH2063 landH776 and to thisH2088 templeH1004?’ 22And others will answerH559, ‘BecauseH5921 they have forsakenH5800 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of their fathersH1, whoH834 brought themH3318 out of the landH776 of EgyptH4714, and have embracedH2388 otherH312 godsH430, worshipingH7812 and serving themH5647—because ofH5921 thisH3651, He has broughtH935 allH3605 thisH2063 disasterH7451 upon themH5921.’”
