24the commanderχιλίαρχοςchiliarchosG5506orderedἐκέλευσενekeleusenG2753that he be broughtεἰσάγεσθαιeisagesthaiG1521intothe barracksπαρεμβολὴνparembolēnG3925,sayingG3004that he was to beinterrogatedἀνετάζεσθαιanetazesthaiG426by floggingμάστιξινmastixinG3148soἵναinaG2443thatG2443he would findG1921outG1921the reasonαἰτίανaitianG156whyδι᾽ ἣνdi᾽ hēnG1223G3739they were shoutingἐπεφώνουνepephōnounG2019against him thatG3779wayG3779.
25But whenὩςHōsG5613they stretchedG4385him outG4385with strapsἱμᾶσιν,himasinG2438,PaulΠαῦλος·PaulosG3972saidG3004to the centurionἑκατόνταρχονhekatontarchonG1543who was standingἑστῶταhestōtaG2476by, “Is itlawfulἔξεστινexestinG1832for you to flogμαστίζειν;mastizeinG3147a manἄνθρωπονanthrōponG444who is a RomanῬωμαῖονRhōmaionG4514and uncondemnedἀκατάκριτονakatakritonG178?”
26When the centurionἑκατοντάρχηςhekatontarchēsG1543heardἀκούσαςakousasG191this,he wentπροσελθὼνproselthōnG4334to the commanderχιλιάρχῳchiliarchōG5506and toldἀπήγγειλενapēngeilenG518him,sayingλέγων·legōnG3004, “WhatτίtiG5101areG3195you aboutG3195toG3195doποιεῖν;poieinG4160?For thisοὗτοςhoutosG3778manἄνθρωποςanthrōposG444is a RomanῬωμαῖόςRhōmaiosG4514.”
28The commanderχιλίαρχος·chiliarchosG5506answeredἀπεκρίθηapekrithēG611, “I acquiredἐκτησάμην.ektēsamēnG2932thisταύτηνtautēnG3778citizenshipπολιτείανpoliteianG4174for a largeπολλοῦpollouG4183sumκεφαλαίουkephalaiouG2774ofG2774moneyG2774.”And PaulΠαῦλοςPaulosG3972saidἔφη·ephēG5346, “But I was actuallyκαὶkaiG2532bornγεγέννημαι.gegennēmaiG1080a citizen.”
29ThereforeοὖνounG3767,thoseG3588who were aboutμέλλοντεςmellontesG3195tointerrogateἀνετάζειν.anetazeinG426him immediatelyεὐθέωςeutheōsG2112backedG868awayG868from him; and the commanderχιλίαρχοςchiliarchosG5506alsoG2532wasG5399afraidἐφοβήθηephobēthēG5399when he foundG1921outG1921that he was a RomanῬωμαῖόςRhōmaiosG4514,and becauseG3754he hadputG1210him inG1210chainsG1210.
