1 Chronicles 19

American Standard Version

1And it came to pass after this, that NahashH5176 the kingH4428 of the children of AmmonH5983 diedH4191, and his sonH1121 reignedH4427 in his stead. 2And DavidH1732 saidH559, I will show kindness unto HanunH2586 the sonH1121 of NahashH5176, because his fatherH1 showed kindness to me. So DavidH1732 sentH7971 messengersH4397 to comfortH5162 him concerning his fatherH1. And David’s servantsH5650 cameH935 into the landH776 of the children of AmmonH5983 to HanunH2586, to comfortH5162 him. 3But the princesH8269 of the children of AmmonH5983 saidH559 to HanunH2586, Thinkest thou that DavidH1732 doth honorH3513 thy fatherH1, in that he hath sentH7971 comfortersH5162 unto thee? are not his servantsH5650 comeH935 unto thee to searchH2713, and to overthrowH2015, and to spyH7270 out the landH776? 4So HanunH2586 tookH3947 David’s servantsH5650, and shavedH1548 them, and cutH3772 off their garments in the middleH2677, even to their buttocks, and sentH7971 them awayH7971. 5Then there wentH7725 certain personsH376, and toldH5046 DavidH1732 how the menH376 were served. And he sentH7971 to meet them; for the menH376 were greatly ashamedH3637. And the kingH4428 saidH559, Tarry at JerichoH3405 until your beardsH2206 beH1961 grownH6779, and then returnH7725.

6And when the children of AmmonH5983 sawH7200 that they had made themselves odiousH887 to DavidH1732, HanunH2586 and the children of AmmonH5983 sentH7971 a thousandH505 talentsH3603 of silverH3701 to hireH7936 them chariotsH7393 and horsemenH6571 out of Mesopotamia, and out of Aram-maacah, and out of ZobahH6678. 7So they hiredH7936 them thirtyH7970 and twoH8147 thousandH505 chariotsH7393, and the kingH4428 of MaacahH4601 and his peopleH5971, who cameH935 and encampedH2583 before MedebaH4311. And the children of AmmonH5983 gatheredH622 themselves together from their citiesH5892, and cameH935 to battleH4421. 8And when DavidH1732 heardH8085 of it, he sentH7971 JoabH3097, and all the hostH6635 of the mightyH1368 menH1368. 9And the children of AmmonH5983 cameH935 out, and put the battleH4421 in array at the gate of the cityH5892: and the kingsH4428 that were comeH935 were by themselves in the fieldH7704.

10Now when JoabH3097 sawH7200 that the battleH4421 wasH1961 set against him before and behind, he choseH977 of all the choice menH970 of IsraelH3478, and put them in array against the Syrians. 11And the restH3499 of the peopleH5971 he committed into the handH3027 of AbishaiH52 his brotherH251; and they putH5414 themselves in array against the children of AmmonH5983. 12And he saidH559, If the Syrians beH1961 too strongH2388 for me, then thou shalt help me; but if the children of AmmonH5983 beH1961 too strongH2388 for thee, then I will help thee. 13Be of goodH2896 courage, and let us play the man for our peopleH5971, and for the citiesH5892 of our GodH430: and Jehovah do that which seemeth him goodH2896. 14So JoabH3097 and the peopleH5971 that were with him drewH5066 nigh before the Syrians unto the battleH4421; and they fledH5127 before him. 15And when the children of AmmonH5983 sawH7200 that the Syrians were fledH5127, they likewise fledH5127 before AbishaiH52 his brotherH251, and entered into the cityH5892. Then JoabH3097 cameH935 to JerusalemH3389.

16And when the Syrians sawH7200 that they were put to the worse before IsraelH3478, they sentH7971 messengersH4397, and drew forthH3318 the Syrians that were beyond the RiverH5104, with ShophachH7780 the captain of the hostH6635 of Hadarezer at their head. 17And it was toldH5046 DavidH1732; and he gatheredH622 all IsraelH3478 together, and passedH5674 over the JordanH3383, and cameH935 upon them, and set the battleH4421 in array against them. So when DavidH1732 had put the battleH4421 in array against the Syrians, they foughtH3898 with him. 18And the Syrians fledH5127 before IsraelH3478; and DavidH1732 slewH2026 of the Syrians the menH376 of sevenH7651 thousandH505 chariotsH7393, and fortyH705 thousandH505 footmen, and killedH2026 ShophachH7780 the captain of the hostH6635. 19And when the servantsH5650 of Hadarezer sawH7200 that they were put to the worse before IsraelH3478, they made peace with DavidH1732, and servedH5647 him: neither wouldH14 the Syrians help the children of AmmonH5983 any more.
