1 Chronicles 19
Revised Version 1895
1And it cameH1961 to passH1961 afterH310 this, that NahashH5176 the kingH4428 of the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 diedH4191, and his sonH1121 reignedH4427 in his steadH8478. 2And DavidH1732 saidH559, I will shew kindnessH2617 unto HanunH2586 the sonH1121 of NahashH5176, becauseH3588 his fatherH1 shewed kindnessH2617 to meH413. SoH6213 DavidH1732 sentH7971 messengersH4397 to comfortH5162 him concerning his fatherH1. And David’sH1732 servantsH5650 cameH935 intoH413 the landH776 of the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 to HanunH2586, to comfortH5162 him. 3But the princesH8269 of the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 saidH559 to HanunH2586, Thinkest thou that DavidH1732 doth honour thy fatherH1, that he hath sentH7971 comfortersH5162 unto thee? are notH3808 his servantsH5650 comeH935 unto thee for to searchH2713, and to overthrowH2015, and to spyH7270 outH7971 the landH776? 4SoH3947 HanunH2586 tookH3947 David’sH1732 servantsH5650, and shavedH1548 them, and cutH3772 offH3772 their garmentsH4063 in the middleH2677, evenH5704 to their buttocks, and sentH7971 them awayH7971. 5Then there wentH7725 certainH376, and toldH5046 DavidH1732 howH834 the menH376 were servedH1961. And he sentH7971 to meetH7125 them; for the menH376 were greatlyH3966 ashamedH3637. And the kingH4428 saidH559, Tarry at JerichoH3405 untilH5704 your beardsH2206 be grownH6779, and then returnH7725. 6And when the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 sawH7200 that they had madeH887 themselvesH887 odiousH887 to DavidH1732, HanunH2586 and the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 sentH7971 a thousandH505 talentsH3603 of silverH3701 to hireH7936 them chariotsH7393 and horsemenH6571 outH4480 of MesopotamiaH763, and outH4480 of Aram-maacah, and outH4480 of ZobahH6678. 7SoH935 they hiredH7936 them thirtyH7970 and twoH8147 thousandH505 chariotsH7393, and the kingH4428 of MaacahH4601 and his peopleH5971; who cameH935 and pitchedH2583 beforeH6440 MedebaH4311. And the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 gatheredH622 themselvesH622 togetherH622 from their cites, and cameH935 to battleH4421. 8And when DavidH1732 heardH8085 of it, he sentH7971 JoabH3097, and allH3605 the hostH6635 of the mightyH1368 menH1368. 9And the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 cameH935 outH3318, and putH935 the battleH4421 in arrayH4421 at the gateH6607 of the cityH5892: and the kingsH4428 that were comeH935 were by themselvesH905 in the fieldH7704. 10NowH1961 when JoabH3097 sawH7200 that the battleH4421 was set againstH413 him beforeH6440 and behindH268, he choseH977 of allH3605 the choiceH977 menH970 of IsraelH3478, and put them in arrayH4421 againstH413 the Syrians. 11And the restH3499 of the peopleH5971 he committedH5414 intoH3027 the handH3027 of AbishaiH52 his brotherH251, and they putH5414 themselves in array againstH7125 the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983. 12And he saidH559, IfH518 the Syrians be tooH4480 strongH2388 for meH4480, then thou shalt helpH3467 meH4480: but ifH518 the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 be tooH4480 strongH2388 for thee, then I will helpH3467 thee. 13Be of goodH2896 courageH2388, and let usH5869 play the menH5971 for our peopleH5971, and for the citiesH5892 of our GodH430: and the LORDH3068 doH6213 that whichH5869 seemeth him goodH2896. 14SoH834 JoabH3097 and the peopleH5971 that were with him drewH5066 nigh beforeH6440 the Syrians unto the battleH4421; and they fledH5127 beforeH6440 him. 15And when the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 sawH7200 that the Syrians were fledH5127, they likewise fledH5127 beforeH6440 AbishaiH52 his brotherH251, and enteredH935 intoH935 the cityH5892. Then JoabH3097 cameH935 to JerusalemH3389. 16And when the Syrians sawH7200 that they were putH7971 to the worse beforeH6440 IsraelH3478, they sentH7971 messengersH4397, and drew forthH3318 the Syrians that were beyondH5676 the RiverH5104, with ShophachH7780 the captainH8269 of the hostH6635 of Hadarezer at their headH8269. 17And it was toldH5046 DavidH1732; and he gatheredH622 allH3605 IsraelH3478 togetherH622, and passedH5674 over JordanH3383, and cameH935 uponH935 them, and setH935 the battleH4421 in arrayH4421 againstH413 them. SoH935 when DavidH1732 had putH935 the battleH4421 in arrayH4421 againstH413 the Syrians, they foughtH3898 with him: 18And the Syrians fledH5127 beforeH6440 IsraelH3478; and DavidH1732 slewH2026 of the Syrians the menH376 of sevenH7651 thousandH505 chariotsH7393, and fortyH705 thousandH505 footmenH7273, and killedH2026 ShophachH7780 the captainH8269 of the hostH6635. 19And when the servantsH5650 of Hadarezer sawH7200 that they were put to the worse beforeH6440 IsraelH3478, they madeH5647 peace with DavidH1732, and servedH5647 him: neitherH3808 would the Syrians helpH3467 the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 anyH5750 moreH5750.
