David’s Messengers Disgraced

(2 Samuel 10:1–8)

Some time laterH310H3651, NahashH5176 kingH4428 of the AmmonitesH1121H5983 diedH4191 and was succeeded byH4427H8478 his sonH1121. 2And DavidH1732 saidH559, “I will showH6213 kindnessH2617 toH5973 HanunH2586 sonH1121 of NahashH5176, becauseH3588 his fatherH1 showedH6213 kindnessH2617 to meH5973.”

So DavidH1732 sentH7971 messengersH4397 to consoleH5162 Hanun concerningH5921 his fatherH1. But when David’sH1732 servantsH5650 arrivedH935 inH413 the landH776 of the AmmonitesH1121H5983H413H2586 to console himH5162, 3the princesH8269 of the AmmonitesH1121H5983 saidH559 to HanunH2586, “Just becauseH3588 David has sentH7971 you comfortersH5162, do you really believeH5869 he isH1732 showing respectH3513 for your fatherH1? Have notH3808 his servantsH5650 comeH935 to youH413 to exploreH5668H2713 the landH776, spy it outH7270, and overthrow itH2015?”

4So HanunH2586 tookH3947 David’sH1732 servantsH5650, shavedH1548 their beards, cut offH3772 their garmentsH4063 atH2677H5704 the hipsH4667, and sent them awayH7971.

5When someone cameH1980 and toldH5046 DavidH1732 aboutH5921 his menH582, he sentH7971 messengers to meet themH7122, sinceH3588 the menH582 had beenH1961 thoroughlyH3966 humiliatedH3637. The kingH4428 told themH559, “StayH3427 in JerichoH3405 untilH5704 your beardsH2206 have grown backH6779, and then returnH7725.”

6When the AmmonitesH1121H5983H3588 realized thatH7200 they had become a stenchH887 toH5973 DavidH1732, HanunH2586 and the AmmonitesH1121H5983 sentH7971 a thousandH505 talentsH3603 of silverH37011 to hireH7936 for themselves chariotsH7393 and horsemenH6571 fromH4480 Aram-naharaimH763H4480H758,2 Aram-maacahH4601, and ZobahH6678. 7So they hiredH7936 for themselves thirty-twoH8147H7970 thousandH505 chariotsH7393, as well asH853 the kingH4428 of MaacahH4601 with his troopsH5971, who cameH935 and campedH2583 nearH6440 MedebaH4311 while the AmmonitesH1121H5983 were mustered from their citiesH5892H935 and marched outH622 for battleH4421.

8On hearing thisH8085, DavidH1732 sentH7971 JoabH3097 andH853 the entireH3605 armyH6635 of mighty menH1368. 9The AmmonitesH1121H5983 marched outH3318 and arrayed themselvesH6186 for battleH4421 at the entranceH6607 to the cityH5892, while the kingsH4428 whoH834 had comeH935 stayed by themselvesH905 in the open countryH7704.

David Defeats Ammon and Aram

(2 Samuel 10:9–19)

10When JoabH3097 sawH7200 the battle linesH4421 before himH6440 and behind himH268, he selectedH977 some ofH3605 the bestH977 men of IsraelH3478 and arrayed themH6186 againstH7122 the ArameansH758. 11AndH853 he placedH5414 the restH3499 of the troopsH5971 under the commandH3027 of his brotherH251 AbishaiH52, who arrayed themH6186 againstH7122 the AmmonitesH1121H5983.

12“IfH518 the ArameansH758 are too strongH2388 for meH4480,” said JoabH559, “then you will comeH1961 to my rescueH8668. And ifH518 the AmmonitesH1121H5983 are too strongH2388 for youH4480, then I will come to your rescueH3467. 13Be strongH2388 and let us fight bravelyH2388 forH1157 our peopleH5971 and forH1157 the citiesH5892 of our GodH430. May the LORDH3068 doH2896 what is goodH6213 in His sightH5869.”

14So JoabH3097 and his troopsH5971 advancedH5066 to fightH4421 the ArameansH758, who fledH5127 beforeH6440 himH6440. 15When the AmmonitesH1121H5983 sawH7200 thatH3588 the ArameansH758 had fledH5127, theyH1992 tooH1571 fledH5127 beforeH6440 Joab’s brotherH251 AbishaiH52, and they enteredH935 the cityH5892. So JoabH3097 went backH935 to JerusalemH3389.

16When the ArameansH758 sawH7200 thatH3588 they had been defeatedH5062 byH6440 IsraelH3478, they sentH7971 messengersH4397 to bringH3318 more ArameansH758 from beyondH5676 the EuphratesH5104,3 with ShophachH77804 the commanderH8269 of Hadadezer’sH1909 armyH6635 leading themH6440.

17When this was reportedH5046 to DavidH1732, he gatheredH622 allH3605 IsraelH3478, crossedH5674 the JordanH3383, advancedH935 towardH413 the ArameansH758, and arrayed for battleH6186 against themH413. When DavidH1732 lined upH6186 to engageH7122 them in battleH4421, they foughtH3898 against himH5973. 18But the ArameansH758 fledH5127 beforeH6440 IsraelH3478, and DavidH1732H758 killedH2026 sevenH7651 thousandH505 of their charioteersH7393 and fortyH705 thousandH505 foot soldiersH376H7273. He also killedH4191 ShophachH7780 the commanderH8269 of their armyH6635.

19When Hadadezer’sH1909 subjectsH5650 sawH7200 thatH3588 they had been defeatedH5062 byH6440 IsraelH3478, they made peaceH7999 withH5973 DavidH1732 and became subject to himH5647. So the ArameansH758 were unwillingH3808H14 to helpH3467 the AmmonitesH1121H5983 anymoreH5750.
