The Birth of Moses

1Now a manH376 from 1the houseH1004 of LeviH3878 wentH1980 and 2marriedH3947 a daughterH1323 of LeviH3878. 2The womanH802 conceivedH2029 and boreH3205 a sonH1121; and when she sawH7200 3that he was 45beautifulH2896, she hidH6845 him for threeH7969 monthsH3391. 3But when she couldH3201 hideH6845 him noH3808 longerH5750, she gotH3947 him a 67wickerH1573 8basketH8392 and coveredH2560 it over with tarH2564 and pitchH2203. Then she putH7760 the childH3206 into it and setH7760 it among the 9reedsH5488 by the bankH8193 of the NileH2975. 410His sisterH269 stoodH3320 at a distanceH7350 to 11findH3045 out whatH4100 would 12happenH6213 to him.

5The daughterH1323 of PharaohH6547 cameH3381 downH3381 13to batheH7364 at the NileH2975, with her maidensH5291 walkingH1980 alongsideH5921H3027 the NileH2975; and she sawH7200 the 14basketH8392 amongH8432 the reedsH5488 and sentH7971 her maidH519, and she broughtH3947 it to her. 6When she openedH6605 it, she 15sawH7200 the childH3206, and beholdH2009, the 16boyH5288 was cryingH1058. And she hadH2550 pityH2550 on him and saidH559, “ThisH2088 is oneH4480 of the Hebrews’H5680 childrenH3206.” 7Then his sisterH269 saidH559 to Pharaoh’sH6547 daughterH1323, “Shall I goH1980 and callH7121 17a nurseH3243 for you from the HebrewH5680 womenH5680 that she may nurseH3243 the childH3206 for you?” 8Pharaoh’sH6547 daughterH1323 saidH559 to her, “GoH1980 ahead.” So the girlH5959 wentH1980 and calledH7121 the child’sH3206 motherH517. 9Then Pharaoh’sH6547 daughterH1323 saidH559 to her, “TakeH1980 thisH2088 childH3206 away and nurseH3243 him for me and I will giveH5414 you your wagesH7939.” So the womanH802 tookH3947 the childH3206 and nursedH5134 him. 10The childH3206 grewH1431, and she broughtH935 him to Pharaoh’sH6547 daughterH1323 and 18he becameH1961 her sonH1121. And she namedH7121H8034 him 19MosesH4872, and saidH559, “BecauseH3588 I 20drewH4871 him out of the waterH4325.”

11Now it cameH1961 about in thoseH1992 daysH3117, 21when MosesH4872 had grownH1431 up, that he wentH3318 out to his brethrenH251 and lookedH7200 on their 2223hardH5450 laborsH5450; and 24he sawH7200 an EgyptianH4713 beatingH5221 a HebrewH5680, oneH4480 of his brethrenH251. 12So he 25lookedH6437 thisH3541 wayH3541 and that, and when he sawH7200 thereH369 was noH369 oneH376 around, he 26struckH5221 downH5221 the EgyptianH4713 and hidH2934 him in the sandH2344. 13He wentH3318 out 27the nextH8145 dayH3117, and beholdH2009, twoH8147 HebrewsH5680 were 28fightingH5327 with each other; and he saidH559 to the 29offenderH7563, “WhyH4100 are you strikingH5221 your companionH7453?” 14But he saidH559, “30WhoH4310 madeH7760 you a 31princeH8269 or a judgeH8199 overH5921 us? Are you 32intendingH559 to killH2026 me as you killedH2026 the EgyptianH4713?” Then MosesH4872 was afraidH3372 and saidH559, “SurelyH403 the matterH1697 has become knownH3045.”

Moses Escapes to Midian

15When PharaohH6547 heardH8085 of thisH2088 matterH1697, he triedH1245 to killH2026 MosesH4872. But 33MosesH4872 fledH1272 from the presenceH6440 of PharaohH6547 and 34settledH3427 in the landH776 of MidianH4080, and he satH3427 downH3427 35by a wellH875.

16Now 36the priestH3548 of MidianH4080 had sevenH7651 daughtersH1323; and 37they cameH935 to drawH1802 waterH1802 and filledH4390 the troughsH7298 to waterH8248 their father’sH1 flockH6629. 17Then the shepherdsH7462 cameH935 and droveH1644 them awayH1644, but 38MosesH4872 stoodH6965 up and helpedH3467 them and wateredH8248 their flockH6629. 18When they cameH935 to 39ReuelH7467 their fatherH1, he saidH559, “WhyH4069 have you comeH935 back so soonH4116 todayH3117?” 19So they saidH559, “An EgyptianH4713 deliveredH5337 us from the handH3027 of the shepherdsH7462, and whatH1571 is moreH1571, he evenH1571 drewH1802 the waterH1802 for us and wateredH8248 the flockH6629.” 20He saidH559 to his daughtersH1323, “WhereH335 is he then? WhyH4100 is it that you have leftH5800 the manH376 behindH5800? InviteH7121 him 40to have somethingH3899 to eatH398.” 2141MosesH4872 was willingH2974 to dwellH3427 with the manH376, and he gaveH5414 his daughterH1323 42ZipporahH6855 to MosesH4872. 22Then she gaveH3205 birthH3205 to 43a sonH1121, and he namedH7121H8034 him 44GershomH1647, for he saidH559, “I have beenH1961 45a 46sojournerH1616 in a foreignH5237 landH776.”

23Now it cameH1961 about in the course of thoseH1992 manyH7227 daysH3117 that the kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 diedH4191. And the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 47sighedH584 becauseH4480 of the bondageH5656, and they criedH2199 out; and 48their cryH7775 for helpH7775 becauseH4480 of their bondageH5656 roseH5927 up to GodH430. 24So 49GodH430 heardH8085 their groaningH5009; and GodH430 rememberedH2142 50His covenantH1285 with AbrahamH85, IsaacH3327, and JacobH3290. 2551GodH430 sawH7200 the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478, and GodH430 52tookH3045 noticeH3045 of them.
