2Now there wasהָ֥יָהHa.yahH1961noוְלֹא־ve.lo'-H3808waterמַ֖יִםMa.yimH4325for the congregationלָעֵדָ֑הla.'e.DahH5712,so they gatheredוַיִּקָּ֣הֲל֔וּvai.yi.Ka.ha.LuH6950againstעַל־'al-H5921Mosesמֹשֶׁ֖ה וְעַֽל־mo.Sheh ve.'al-H4872 H5921and Aaronאַהֲרֹֽן׃'a.ha.RonH175.

3The peopleהָעָ֖םha.'AmH5971quarreledוַיָּ֥רֶבvai.Ya.revH7378withעִם־'im-H5973Mosesמֹשֶׁ֑הmo.ShehH4872and saidH559, “If onlyוְל֥וּve.LuH3863we had perishedH1478with our brothersאַחֵ֖ינוּ'a.Chei.nuH251beforeלִפְנֵ֥יlif.NeiH6440the LORDיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068!

4Whyוְלָמָ֤הve.la.MahH4100have you broughtהֲבֵאתֶם֙ha.ve.TemH935אֶת־'et-H853the LORD’sיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068assemblyקְהַ֣לke.HalH6951intoאֶל־'el-H413thisהַזֶּ֑הha.ZehH2088wildernessהַמִּדְבָּ֖רha.mid.BarH4057for usאֲנַ֖חְנוּ'a.Nach.nuH587and our livestockוּבְעִירֵֽנוּ׃u.ve.'i.Re.nuH1165to dieלָמ֣וּתla.MutH4191hereשָׁ֔םShamH8033?

6Then Mosesמֹשֶׁ֨הmo.ShehH4872and Aaronוְאַהֲרֹ֜ןve.'a.ha.RonH175wentוַיָּבֹא֩vai.ya.Vo'H935from the presenceמִפְּנֵ֣יmi.pe.NeiH6440of the assemblyהַקָּהָ֗לha.ka.HalH6951toאֶל־'el-H413the entranceפֶּ֙תַח֙pe.tachH6607to the Tentאֹ֣הֶל'O.helH168of Meetingמוֹעֵ֔דmo.'EdH4150.They fell facedownוַֽיִּפְּל֖וּ עַל־ פְּנֵיהֶ֑םvai.yi.pe.Lu 'al- pe.nei.HemH5307 H5921 H6440,and the gloryכְבוֹד־khe.Vod-H3519of the LORDיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068appearedוַיֵּרָ֥אvai.ye.Ra'H7200to themאֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ פ'a.lei.HemH413.

7And the LORDיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068saidוַיְדַבֵּ֥רvay.da.BerH1696toאֶל־'el-H413Mosesמֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃mo.Sheh le.MorH4872 H559,

8“Takeקַ֣חkachH3947אֶת־'et-H853the staffהַמַּטֶּ֗הha.ma.TehH4294and assembleוְהַקְהֵ֤לve.hak.HelH6950אֶת־'et-H853the congregationהָעֵדָה֙ha.'e.DahH5712.Youאַתָּה֙'a.TahH859and your brotherאָחִ֔יךָ'a.Chi.khaH251Aaronוְאַהֲרֹ֣ןve.'a.ha.RonH175are to speakוְדִבַּרְתֶּ֧םve.di.bar.TemH1696toאֶל־'el-H413the rockהַסֶּ֛לַעha.Se.la'H5553while they watchלְעֵינֵיהֶ֖םle.'ei.nei.HemH5869,and it will pour outוְנָתַ֣ןve.na.TanH5414its waterמֵימָ֑יוmei.MavH4325.You will bring outוְהוֹצֵאתָ֨ve.ho.tze.TaH3318waterמַ֙יִם֙ma.yimH4325fromמִן־min-H4480the rockהַסֶּ֔לַעha.Se.la'H5553and provide drinkוְהִשְׁקִיתָ֥ve.hish.ki.TaH8248אֶת־'et-H853for the congregationהָעֵדָ֖הha.'e.DahH5712וְאֶת־ve.'EtH853and their livestockבְּעִירָֽם׃be.'i.RamH1165.”

9So Mosesמֹשֶׁ֛הmo.ShehH4872אֶת־'et-H853tookוַיִּקַּ֥חvai.yi.KachH3947the staffהַמַּטֶּ֖הha.ma.TehH4294from the LORD’sיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068presenceמִלִּפְנֵ֣יmi.lif.NeiH6440,just asכַּאֲשֶׁ֖רka.'a.SherH834he had been commandedצִוָּֽהוּ׃tzi.Va.huH6680.

10Then Mosesמֹשֶׁ֧הmo.ShehH4872and Aaronוְאַהֲרֹ֛ןve.'a.ha.RonH175אֶת־'et-H853gatheredוַיַּקְהִ֜לוּvai.yak.Hi.luH6950the assemblyהַקָּהָ֖לha.ka.HalH6951inאֶל־'el-H413frontפְּנֵ֣יpe.NeiH6440of the rockהַסָּ֑לַעha.Sa.la'H5553,and Moses saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to them, “Listenשִׁמְעוּ־shim.'u-H8085nowנָא֙na'H4994,you rebelsהַמֹּרִ֔יםha.mo.RimH4784,must we bring you waterמָֽיִם׃Ma.yimH4325outנוֹצִ֥יאno.Tzi'H3318ofהֲמִן־ha.min-H4480thisהַזֶּ֔הha.ZehH2088rockהַסֶּ֣לַעha.Se.la'H5553?”

11Then Mosesמֹשֶׁ֜הmo.ShehH4872אֶת־'et-H853raisedוַיָּ֨רֶםvai.Ya.remH7311his handיָד֗וֹya.DoH3027and struckוַיַּ֧ךְvai.YakhH5221אֶת־'et-H853the rockהַסֶּ֛לַעha.Se.la'H5553twiceפַּעֲמָ֑יִםpa.'a.Ma.yimH6471with his staffבְּמַטֵּ֖הוּbe.ma.Te.huH4294,so that a great amount ofרַבִּ֔יםra.BimH7227waterמַ֣יִםMa.yimH4325gushed outוַיֵּצְאוּ֙vai.ye.tze.'UH3318,and the congregationהָעֵדָ֖הha.'e.DahH5712and their livestockוּבְעִירָֽם׃ סu.ve.'i.RamH1165were able to drinkוַתֵּ֥שְׁתְּva.Te.shetH8354.

12But the LORDיְהוָה֮Yah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559toאֶל־'el-H413Mosesמֹשֶׁ֣הmo.ShehH4872andוְאֶֽל־ve.'el-H413Aaronאַהֲרֹן֒'a.ha.RonH175, “Becauseיַ֚עַןYa.'anH3282you did notלֹא־lo'-H3808trustהֶאֱמַנְתֶּ֣םhe.'e.man.TemH539Meto show My holinessלְהַ֨קְדִּישֵׁ֔נִיle.Hak.di.She.niH6942in the sightלְעֵינֵ֖יle.'ei.NeiH5869of the Israelitesבְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לָכֵ֗ןbe.Nei Yis.ra.'El la.KhenH1121 H3478 H3651,you will notלֹ֤אlo'H3808bringתָבִ֙יאוּ֙ta.Vi.'uH935אֶת־'et-H853thisהַזֶּ֔ה אֶל־ha.Zeh 'el-H2088 H413assemblyהַקָּהָ֣לha.ka.HalH6951into the landהָאָ֖רֶץha.'A.retzH776thatאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834I have givenנָתַ֥תִּיna.Ta.tiH5414them.”

13Theseהֵ֚מָּהHe.mahH1992were the watersמֵ֣יmeiH4325of Meribahמְרִיבָ֔הme.ri.VahH4809,whereאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834the Israelitesבְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖לve.nei- Yis.ra.'ElH1121 H3478quarreledרָב֥וּra.VuH7378withאֶת־'et-H854the LORDיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068,and He showed His holinessוַיִּקָּדֵ֖שׁvai.yi.ka.DeshH6942among them.

Edom Refuses Passage

14From Kadeshמִקָּדֵ֖שׁmi.ka.DeshH6946,Mosesמֹשֶׁ֧הmo.ShehH4872sentוַיִּשְׁלַ֨חvai.yish.LachH7971messengersמַלְאָכִ֛יםmal.'a.KhimH4397toאֶל־'el-H413tellthe kingמֶ֣לֶךְMe.lekhH4428of Edomאֱד֑וֹם'e.DomH123, “This is whatכֹּ֤הkohH3541your brotherאָחִ֣יךָ'a.Chi.khaH251Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478saysאָמַר֙'a.MarH559:Youאַתָּ֣ה'a.TahH859knowיָדַ֔עְתָּya.Da'.taH3045אֵ֥ת'etH853allכָּל־kol-H3605the hardshipהַתְּלָאָ֖הha.te.la.'AhH8513thatאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834has befallen usמְצָאָֽתְנוּ׃me.tza.'A.te.nuH4672,

15how our fathersאֲבֹתֵ֙ינוּ֙'a.vo.Tei.nuH1went downוַיֵּרְד֤וּvai.ye.re.DuH3381to Egyptמִצְרַ֔יְמָהmitz.Ray.mahH4714,where we livedוַנֵּ֥שֶׁבva.Ne.shevH3427בְּמִצְרַ֖יִםbe.mitz.Ra.yimH4714manyרַבִּ֑יםra.BimH7227yearsיָמִ֣יםya.MimH3117.The Egyptiansמִצְרַ֖יִםmitz.Ra.yimH4713mistreatedוַיָּרֵ֥עוּvai.ya.Re.'uH7489usand our fathersוְלַאֲבֹתֵֽינוּ׃ve.la.'a.vo.Tei.nuH1,

16and when we cried outוַנִּצְעַ֤קva.nitz.'AkH6817toאֶל־'el-H413the LORDיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068,He heardוַיִּשְׁמַ֣עvai.yish.Ma'H8085our voiceקֹלֵ֔נוּko.Le.nuH6963,sentוַיִּשְׁלַ֣חvai.yish.LachH7971an angelמַלְאָ֔ךְmal.'AkhH4397,and brought usוַיֹּצִאֵ֖נוּvai.yo.tzi.'E.nuH3318out of Egyptמִמִּצְרָ֑יִםmi.mitz.Ra.yimH4714.Now lookוְהִנֵּה֙ve.hi.NehH2009,weאֲנַ֣חְנוּ'a.Nach.nuH587are in Kadeshבְקָדֵ֔שׁve.ka.DeshH6946,a cityעִ֖יר'irH5892on the edgeקְצֵ֥הke.TzehH7097of your territoryגְבוּלֶֽךָ׃ge.vu.Le.khaH1366.

17Pleaseנָּ֣אna'H4994let us passנַעְבְּרָה־na'.be.rah-H5674through your landבְאַרְצֶ֗ךָve.'ar.Tze.khaH776.We will notלֹ֤אlo'H3808go throughנַעֲבֹר֙na.'a.VorH5674any fieldבְּשָׂדֶ֣הbe.sa.DehH7704or vineyardוּבְכֶ֔רֶםu.ve.Khe.remH3754, orוְלֹ֥אve.Lo'H3808drinkנִשְׁתֶּ֖הnish.TehH8354waterמֵ֣יmeiH4325from any wellבְאֵ֑רve.'ErH875.We will stay onנֵלֵ֗ךְne.LekhH1980the King’sהַמֶּ֣לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428Highwayדֶּ֧רֶךְDe.rekhH1870;we will notלֹ֤אlo'H3808turnנִטֶּה֙ni.TehH5186to the rightיָמִ֣יןya.MinH3225or to the leftוּשְׂמֹ֔אולu.se.MolH8040untilעַ֥ד'adH5704אֲשֶֽׁר־'a.Sher-H834we have passed throughנַעֲבֹ֖רna.'a.VorH5674your territoryגְּבוּלֶֽךָ׃ge.vu.Le.khaH1366.”

18But Edomאֱד֔וֹם'e.DomH123answeredוַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙vai.Yo.mer 'e.LavH559 H413, “You may notלֹ֥אlo'H3808פֶּן־pen-H6435travelתַעֲבֹ֖רta.'a.VorH5674through our land,or we will come outאֵצֵ֥א'e.Tze'H3318and confront youלִקְרָאתֶֽךָ׃lik.ra.Te.chaH7122with the swordבַּחֶ֖רֶבba.Che.revH2719.”

19“We will stayנַעֲלֶה֒na.'a.LehH5927on the main roadבַּֽמְסִלָּ֣הbam.si.LahH4546,”the Israelitesבְּנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֘לbe.nei- Yis.ra.'ElH1121 H3478repliedוַיֹּאמְר֨וּvai.yo.me.RuH559אֵלָ֥יו'e.LavH413, “and ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518weאֲנִ֣י'a.NiH589or our herdsוּמִקְנַ֔יu.mik.NaiH4735drinkנִשְׁתֶּה֙nish.TehH8354your waterמֵימֶ֤יךָmei.Mei.khaH4325,we will payוְנָתַתִּ֖יve.na.ta.TiH5414for itמִכְרָ֑םmikh.RamH4377.There will be noאֵין־'ein-H369problemדָּבָ֖רda.VarH1697;onlyרַ֥קrakH7535let us pass throughאֶֽעֱבֹֽרָה׃'E.'e.Vo.rahH5674on footבְּרַגְלַ֥יbe.rag.LaiH7272.”

20But Edomאֱדוֹם֙'e.dOmH123insistedוַיֹּ֖אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “You may notלֹ֣אlo'H3808pass throughתַעֲבֹ֑רta.'a.VorH5674.”And they came outוַיֵּצֵ֤אvai.ye.Tze'H3318to confrontלִקְרָאת֔וֹlik.ra.ToH7122the Israeliteswith a largeכָּבֵ֖דka.VedH3515armyבְּעַ֥םbe.'AmH5971and a strongחֲזָקָֽה׃cha.za.KahH2389handוּבְיָ֥דu.ve.YadH3027.

21So Edomאֱד֗וֹם'e.DomH123refusedוַיְמָאֵ֣ן׀vay.ma.'EnH3985to allowנְתֹן֙ne.TonH5414אֶת־'et-H853Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478to passעֲבֹ֖ר'a.VorH5674through their territoryבִּגְבֻל֑וֹbig.vu.LoH1366,and Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478turned awayוַיֵּ֥טvai.YetH5186from themמֵעָלָֽיו׃ פme.'a.LavH5921.

22After they had set outוַיִּסְע֖וּvai.yis.'UH5265from Kadeshמִקָּדֵ֑שׁmi.ka.DeshH6946,the wholeכָּל־kol-H3605congregationבְנֵֽי־ הָעֵדָ֖הve.nei- ha.'e.DahH5712 H1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֛לYis.ra.'ElH3478cameוַיָּבֹ֧אוּvai.ya.Vo.'uH935to Mountהָהָֽר׃ha.HarH2022Horהֹ֥רhorH2023.

23And at Mountהָהָ֑רha.HarH2022Horבְּהֹ֣רbe.HorH2023,nearעַל־'al-H5921the borderגְּב֥וּלge.VulH1366of the landאֶֽרֶץ־'e.retz-H776of Edomאֱד֖וֹם'e.DomH123,the LORDיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֧אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559toאֶל־'el-H413Mosesמֹשֶׁ֥ה וְאֶֽל־mo.Sheh ve.'el-H4872 H413and Aaronאַהֲרֹ֖ן'a.ha.RonH175לֵאמֹֽר׃le.MorH559,

24“Aaronאַהֲרֹן֙'a.ha.RonH175will be gatheredיֵאָסֵ֤ףye.'a.SefH622toאֶל־'el-H413his peopleעַמָּ֔יו כִּ֣י'a.Mav kiH5971 H3588;he will notלֹ֤אlo'H3808enterיָבֹא֙ אֶל־ya.Vo' 'el-H935 H413the landהָאָ֔רֶץha.'A.retzH776thatאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834I have givenנָתַ֖תִּיna.Ta.tiH5414the Israelitesלִבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑לliv.Nei Yis.ra.'ElH1121 H3478,becauseעַ֛ל'alH5921אֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834both of you rebelledמְרִיתֶ֥םme.ri.TemH4784אֶת־'et-H853against My commandפִּ֖יpiH6310at the watersלְמֵ֥יle.MeiH4325of Meribahמְרִיבָֽה׃me.ri.VahH4809.

25Takeקַ֚חkachH3947אֶֽת־'et-H853Aaronאַהֲרֹ֔ן'a.ha.RonH175וְאֶת־ve.'EtH853and his sonבְּנ֑וֹbe.NoH1121Eleazarאֶלְעָזָ֖ר'el.'a.ZarH499and bring them upוְהַ֥עַלve.Ha.'alH5927אֹתָ֖ם'o.TamH853Mountהָהָֽר׃ha.HarH2022Horהֹ֥רhorH2023.

26Removeוְהַפְשֵׁ֤טve.haf.ShetH6584אֶֽת־'et-H853Aaron’sאַהֲרֹן֙'a.ha.RonH175אֶת־'et-H853priestly garmentsבְּגָדָ֔יוbe.ga.DavH899and put them onוְהִלְבַּשְׁתָּ֖םve.hil.bash.TamH3847אֶת־'et-H853his sonבְּנ֑וֹbe.NoH1121Eleazarאֶלְעָזָ֣ר'el.'a.ZarH499.Aaronוְאַהֲרֹ֥ןve.'a.ha.RonH175will be gatheredיֵאָסֵ֖ףye.'a.SefH622to his peopleand will dieוּמֵ֥תu.MetH4191thereשָֽׁם׃ShamH8033.”

27So Mosesמֹשֶׁ֔הmo.ShehH4872didוַיַּ֣עַשׂvai.Ya.'asH6213asכַּאֲשֶׁ֖רka.'a.SherH834the LORDיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068had commandedצִוָּ֣הtzi.VahH6680,and they climbedוַֽיַּעֲלוּ֙ אֶל־vai.ya.'a.Lu 'el-H5927 H413Mountהָהָ֔רha.HarH2022Horהֹ֣רhorH2023in the sightלְעֵינֵ֖יle.'ei.NeiH5869of the wholeכָּל־kol-H3605congregationהָעֵדָֽה׃ha.'e.DahH5712.
