2There was noוְלֹא־ve.lo'-H3808waterמַ֖יִםMa.yimH4325for the congregationלָעֵדָ֑הla.'e.DahH5712,and they assembledוַיִּקָּ֣הֲל֔וּvai.yi.Ka.ha.LuH6950themselves againstH5921Mosesמֹשֶׁ֖הmo.ShehH4872and Aaronאַהֲרֹֽן׃'a.ha.RonH175.

3The peopleהָעָ֖םha.'AmH5971thus contendedוַיָּ֥רֶבvai.Ya.revH7378with Mosesמֹשֶׁ֑הmo.ShehH4872and spokeוַיֹּאמְר֣וּvai.yo.me.RuH559,sayingלֵאמֹ֔רle.MorH559, “IfH3863onlyH3863we had perishedגָוַ֛עְנוּga.Va'.nuH1478when our brothersאַחֵ֖ינוּ'a.Chei.nuH251perishedבִּגְוַ֥עbig.Va'H1478beforeלִפְנֵ֥יlif.NeiH6440the Lordיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068!

4Whyוְלָמָ֤הve.la.MahH4100then have you broughtהֲבֵאתֶם֙ha.ve.TemH935the Lord’sיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068assemblyקְהַ֣לke.HalH6951into thisהַזֶּ֑הha.ZehH2088wildernessהַמִּדְבָּ֖רha.mid.BarH4057,for us and our beastsוּבְעִירֵֽנוּ׃u.ve.'i.Re.nuH1165to dieלָמ֣וּתla.MutH4191hereשָׁ֔םShamH8033?

6Then Mosesמֹשֶׁ֨הmo.ShehH4872and Aaronוְאַהֲרֹ֜ןve.'a.ha.RonH175cameוַיָּבֹא֩vai.ya.Vo'H935in from the presenceמִפְּנֵ֣יmi.pe.NeiH6440of the assemblyהַקָּהָ֗לha.ka.HalH6951to the doorwayפֶּ֙תַח֙pe.tachH6607of the tentאֹ֣הֶל'O.helH168of meetingמוֹעֵ֔דmo.'EdH4150andfellוַֽיִּפְּל֖וּvai.yi.pe.LuH5307on their facesפְּנֵיהֶ֑םpe.nei.HemH6440.Then the gloryכְבוֹד־khe.Vod-H3519of the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068appearedוַיֵּרָ֥אvai.ye.Ra'H7200to them;

7and the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068spokeוַיְדַבֵּ֥רvay.da.BerH1696to Mosesמֹשֶׁ֥הmo.ShehH4872,sayingלֵּאמֹֽר׃le.MorH559,

8“Takeקַ֣חkachH3947the rodהַמַּטֶּ֗הha.ma.TehH4294;and you and your brotherאָחִ֔יךָ'a.Chi.khaH251Aaronוְאַהֲרֹ֣ןve.'a.ha.RonH175assembleוְהַקְהֵ֤לve.hak.HelH6950the congregationהָעֵדָה֙ha.'e.DahH5712and speakוְדִבַּרְתֶּ֧םve.di.bar.TemH1696to the rockהַסֶּ֛לַעha.Se.la'H5553before their eyesלְעֵינֵיהֶ֖םle.'ei.nei.HemH5869,that it may yieldוְנָתַ֣ןve.na.TanH5414its waterמֵימָ֑יוmei.MavH4325.You shall thus bringוְהוֹצֵאתָ֨ve.ho.tze.TaH3318forthH3318waterמַ֙יִם֙ma.yimH4325for them out of the rockהַסֶּ֔לַעha.Se.la'H5553and let the congregationהָעֵדָ֖הha.'e.DahH5712and their beastsבְּעִירָֽם׃be.'i.RamH1165drinkוְהִשְׁקִיתָ֥ve.hish.ki.TaH8248.”

9So Mosesמֹשֶׁ֛הmo.ShehH4872tookוַיִּקַּ֥חvai.yi.KachH3947the rodהַמַּטֶּ֖הha.ma.TehH4294from beforeמִלִּפְנֵ֣יmi.lif.NeiH4480 H6440the Lordיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068,justH3512as He had commandedצִוָּֽהוּ׃tzi.Va.huH6680him;

10and Mosesמֹשֶׁ֧הmo.ShehH4872and Aaronוְאַהֲרֹ֛ןve.'a.ha.RonH175gatheredוַיַּקְהִ֜לוּvai.yak.Hi.luH6950the assemblyהַקָּהָ֖לha.ka.HalH6951beforeאֶל־ פְּנֵ֣י'el- pe.NeiH413 H6440the rockהַסָּ֑לַעha.Sa.la'H5553.And he saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to them, “Listenשִׁמְעוּ־shim.'u-H8085nowנָא֙na'H4994,you rebelsהַמֹּרִ֔יםha.mo.RimH4784;shall we bringנוֹצִ֥יאno.Tzi'H3318forthH3318waterמָֽיִם׃Ma.yimH4325for you out of thisהַזֶּ֔הha.ZehH2088rockהַסֶּ֣לַעha.Se.la'H5553?”

11Then Mosesמֹשֶׁ֜הmo.ShehH4872liftedוַיָּ֨רֶםvai.Ya.remH7311up his handיָד֗וֹya.DoH3027and struckוַיַּ֧ךְvai.YakhH5221the rockהַסֶּ֛לַעha.Se.la'H5553twiceפַּעֲמָ֑יִםpa.'a.Ma.yimH6471with his rodבְּמַטֵּ֖הוּbe.ma.Te.huH4294; andwaterמַ֣יִםMa.yimH4325cameH3318forthH3318abundantlyרַבִּ֔יםra.BimH7227,and the congregationהָעֵדָ֖הha.'e.DahH5712and their beastsוּבְעִירָֽם׃ סu.ve.'i.RamH1165drankוַתֵּ֥שְׁתְּva.Te.shetH8354.

12But the Lordיְהוָה֮Yah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Mosesמֹשֶׁ֣הmo.ShehH4872and Aaronאַהֲרֹן֒'a.ha.RonH175, “Becauseיַ֚עַןYa.'anH3282you have not believedהֶאֱמַנְתֶּ֣םhe.'e.man.TemH539Me, to treatלְהַ֨קְדִּישֵׁ֔נִיle.Hak.di.She.niH6942Me as holyH6942in the sightלְעֵינֵ֖יle.'ei.NeiH5869of the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478,thereforeלָכֵ֗ןla.KhenH3651you shall not bringתָבִ֙יאוּ֙ta.Vi.'uH935thisהַזֶּ֔הha.ZehH2088assemblyהַקָּהָ֣לha.ka.HalH6951into the landהָאָ֖רֶץha.'A.retzH776whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834I have givenנָתַ֥תִּיna.Ta.tiH5414them.”

13Thoseהֵ֚מָּהHe.mahH1992werethe watersמֵ֣יmeiH4325ofMeribahמְרִיבָ֔הme.ri.VahH4809,becauseאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834the sonsבְנֵֽי־ve.nei-H1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478contendedרָב֥וּra.VuH7378with the Lordיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068,and He provedH6942Himself holyוַיִּקָּדֵ֖שׁvai.yi.ka.DeshH6942among them.

14From Kadeshמִקָּדֵ֖שׁmi.ka.DeshH6946Mosesמֹשֶׁ֧הmo.ShehH4872then sentוַיִּשְׁלַ֨חvai.yish.LachH7971messengersמַלְאָכִ֛יםmal.'a.KhimH4397tothe kingמֶ֣לֶךְMe.lekhH4428of EdomH112: “Thusכֹּ֤הkohH3541your brotherאָחִ֣יךָ'a.Chi.khaH251Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478has saidאָמַר֙'a.MarH559, ‘Youknowיָדַ֔עְתָּya.Da'.taH3045allכָּל־kol-H3605the hardshipהַתְּלָאָ֖הha.te.la.'AhH8513that has befallenמְצָאָֽתְנוּ׃me.tza.'A.te.nuH4672us;

15that our fathersאֲבֹתֵ֙ינוּ֙'a.vo.Tei.nuH1wentH3381downוַיֵּרְד֤וּvai.ye.re.DuH3381to Egyptמִצְרַ֔יְמָהmitz.Ray.mahH4714,and we stayedוַנֵּ֥שֶׁבva.Ne.shevH3427in Egyptבְּמִצְרַ֖יִםbe.mitz.Ra.yimH4714a longרַבִּ֑יםra.BimH7227timeיָמִ֣יםya.MimH3117,and the EgyptiansH4714treatedH7489us and our fathersוְלַאֲבֹתֵֽינוּ׃ve.la.'a.vo.Tei.nuH1badlyH7489.

16Butwhen we criedוַנִּצְעַ֤קva.nitz.'AkH6817out to the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068,He heardוַיִּשְׁמַ֣עvai.yish.Ma'H8085our voiceקֹלֵ֔נוּko.Le.nuH6963and sentוַיִּשְׁלַ֣חvai.yish.LachH7971an angelמַלְאָ֔ךְmal.'AkhH4397and broughtוַיֹּצִאֵ֖נוּvai.yo.tzi.'E.nuH3318us out from Egyptמִמִּצְרָ֑יִםmi.mitz.Ra.yimH4714;now beholdוְהִנֵּה֙ve.hi.NehH2009,we are at Kadeshבְקָדֵ֔שׁve.ka.DeshH6946,a townעִ֖יר'irH5892on the edgeקְצֵ֥הke.TzehH7097of your territoryגְבוּלֶֽךָ׃ge.vu.Le.khaH1366.

17Pleaseנָּ֣אna'H4994let us passנַעְבְּרָה־na'.be.rah-H5674through your landבְאַרְצֶ֗ךָve.'ar.Tze.khaH776.We will not passנַעֲבֹר֙na.'a.VorH5674throughH5674fieldבְּשָׂדֶ֣הbe.sa.DehH7704or through vineyardוּבְכֶ֔רֶםu.ve.Khe.remH3754;we will not even drinkנִשְׁתֶּ֖הnish.TehH8354waterמֵ֣יmeiH4325from a wellבְאֵ֑רve.'ErH875.We will goנֵלֵ֗ךְne.LekhH1980along the king’sהַמֶּ֣לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428highwayדֶּ֧רֶךְDe.rekhH1870,not turningנִטֶּה֙ni.TehH5186to the rightיָמִ֣יןya.MinH3225or leftוּשְׂמֹ֔אולu.se.MolH8040,untilעַ֥ד אֲשֶֽׁר־'ad 'a.Sher-H5704 H834we passנַעֲבֹ֖רna.'a.VorH5674throughH5674your territoryגְּבוּלֶֽךָ׃ge.vu.Le.khaH1366.’”

18EdomH112,however, saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “You shall not passתַעֲבֹ֖רta.'a.VorH5674throughH5674us, orפֶּן־pen-H6435I will comeאֵצֵ֥א'e.Tze'H3318out with the swordבַּחֶ֖רֶבba.Che.revH2719againstלִקְרָאתֶֽךָ׃lik.ra.Te.chaH7122you.”

19Again, the sonsבְּנֵֽי־be.nei-H1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֘לYis.ra.'ElH3478saidוַיֹּאמְר֨וּvai.yo.me.RuH559to him, “We will goנַעֲלֶה֒na.'a.LehH5927up by the highwayבַּֽמְסִלָּ֣הbam.si.LahH4546,and ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518I andmy livestockוּמִקְנַ֔יu.mik.NaiH4735do drinkנִשְׁתֶּה֙nish.TehH8354any of your waterמֵימֶ֤יךָmei.Mei.khaH4325, then I willpayוְנָתַתִּ֖יve.na.ta.TiH5414its priceמִכְרָ֑םmikh.RamH4377.Let me onlyH7534passאֶֽעֱבֹֽרָה׃'E.'e.Vo.rahH5674throughH5674on my feetבְּרַגְלַ֥יbe.rag.LaiH7272,nothingאֵין־ דָּבָ֖ר'ein- da.VarH369 H1697else.”

20But he saidוַיֹּ֖אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “You shall not passתַעֲבֹ֑רta.'a.VorH5674throughH5674.”And EdomH112cameוַיֵּצֵ֤אvai.ye.Tze'H3318out againstלִקְרָאת֔וֹlik.ra.ToH7122him with a heavyכָּבֵ֖דka.VedH3515forceבְּעַ֥םbe.'AmH5971and with a strongחֲזָקָֽה׃cha.za.KahH2389handוּבְיָ֥דu.ve.YadH3027.

21Thus EdomH112refusedוַיְמָאֵ֣ן׀vay.ma.'EnH3985to allowנְתֹן֙ne.TonH5414Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478to passעֲבֹ֖ר'a.VorH5674throughH5674his territoryבִּגְבֻל֑וֹbig.vu.LoH1366;so Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478turnedוַיֵּ֥טvai.YetH5186awayH5186from him.

22Now when they setוַיִּסְע֖וּvai.yis.'UH5265out fromKadeshמִקָּדֵ֑שׁmi.ka.DeshH6946,the sonsבְנֵֽי־ve.nei-H1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֛לYis.ra.'ElH3478,the wholeכָּל־kol-H3605congregationהָעֵדָ֖הha.'e.DahH5712,cameוַיָּבֹ֧אוּvai.ya.Vo.'uH935to Mountהָהָֽר׃ha.HarH2022Horהֹ֥רhorH2023.

23Then the Lordיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068spokeוַיֹּ֧אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Mosesמֹשֶׁ֥הmo.ShehH4872and Aaronאַהֲרֹ֖ן'a.ha.RonH175atMountהָהָ֑רha.HarH2022Horבְּהֹ֣רbe.HorH2023by the borderגְּב֥וּלge.VulH1366of the landאֶֽרֶץ־'e.retz-H776of EdomH112,sayingלֵאמֹֽר׃le.MorH559,

24“Aaronאַהֲרֹן֙'a.ha.RonH175will begatheredיֵאָסֵ֤ףye.'a.SefH622to his peopleעַמָּ֔יו'a.MavH5971;for he shall not enterיָבֹא֙ya.Vo'H935the landהָאָ֔רֶץha.'A.retzH776whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834I have givenנָתַ֖תִּיna.Ta.tiH5414to the sonsלִבְנֵ֣יliv.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478,becauseעַ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־'al 'a.Sher-H5921 H834you rebelledמְרִיתֶ֥םme.ri.TemH4784againstH854Mycommandפִּ֖יpiH6310at the watersלְמֵ֥יle.MeiH4325of Meribahמְרִיבָֽה׃me.ri.VahH4809.

25Takeקַ֚חkachH3947Aaronאַהֲרֹ֔ן'a.ha.RonH175and his sonבְּנ֑וֹbe.NoH1121Eleazarאֶלְעָזָ֖ר'el.'a.ZarH499and bringוְהַ֥עַלve.Ha.'alH5927them up to Mountהָהָֽר׃ha.HarH2022Horהֹ֥רhorH2023;

26and stripוְהַפְשֵׁ֤טve.haf.ShetH6584Aaronאַהֲרֹן֙'a.ha.RonH175of his garmentsבְּגָדָ֔יוbe.ga.DavH899and putוְהִלְבַּשְׁתָּ֖םve.hil.bash.TamH3847them on his sonבְּנ֑וֹbe.NoH1121Eleazarאֶלְעָזָ֣ר'el.'a.ZarH499.So Aaronוְאַהֲרֹ֥ןve.'a.ha.RonH175will begatheredיֵאָסֵ֖ףye.'a.SefH622to his people,and will dieוּמֵ֥תu.MetH4191thereשָֽׁם׃ShamH8033.”

27So Mosesמֹשֶׁ֔הmo.ShehH4872didוַיַּ֣עַשׂvai.Ya.'asH6213justH3512as the Lordיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068had commandedצִוָּ֣הtzi.VahH6680,and they wentוַֽיַּעֲלוּ֙vai.ya.'a.LuH5927up to Mountהָהָ֔רha.HarH2022Horהֹ֣רhorH2023in the sightלְעֵינֵ֖יle.'ei.NeiH5869of allכָּל־kol-H3605the congregationהָעֵדָֽה׃ha.'e.DahH5712.

28After Mosesמֹשֶׁ֨הmo.ShehH4872had strippedוַיַּפְשֵׁט֩vai.yaf.ShetH6584Aaronאַהֲרֹ֜ן'a.ha.RonH175of his garmentsבְּגָדָ֗יוbe.ga.DavH899andputוַיַּלְבֵּ֤שׁvai.yal.BeshH3847them on his sonבְּנ֔וֹbe.NoH1121Eleazarאֶלְעָזָ֣ר'el.'a.ZarH499,Aaronאַהֲרֹ֛ן'a.ha.RonH175diedוַיָּ֧מָתvai.Ya.motH4191thereשָׁ֖םshamH8033on the mountainהָהָ֑רha.HarH2022topבְּרֹ֣אשׁbe.RoshH7218.Then Mosesמֹשֶׁ֛הmo.ShehH4872and Eleazarוְאֶלְעָזָ֖רve.'el.'a.ZarH499cameH3381downוַיֵּ֧רֶדvai.Ye.redH3381from the mountainהָהָֽר׃ha.HarH2022.
