2 Samuel 10

1And it came to pass after this, that the kingH4428 of the children of AmmonH5983 diedH4191, and HanunH2586 his sonH1121 reignedH4427 in his stead. 2And DavidH1732 saidH559, I will show kindness unto HanunH2586 the sonH1121 of NahashH5176, as his fatherH1 showed kindness unto me. So DavidH1732 sentH7971 by his servantsH5650 to comfortH5162 him concerningH413 his fatherH1. And David’s servantsH5650 cameH935 into the landH776 of the children of AmmonH5983. 3But the princesH8269 of the children of AmmonH5983 saidH559 unto HanunH2586 their lordH113, Thinkest thou that DavidH1732 doth honorH3513 thy fatherH1, in that he hath sentH7971 comfortersH5162 unto thee? hath not DavidH1732 sentH7971 his servantsH5650 unto thee to searchH2713 the cityH5892, and to spyH7270 it out, and to overthrowH2015 it? 4So HanunH2586 tookH3947 David’s servantsH5650, and shavedH1548 off the one halfH2677 of their beardsH2206, and cutH3772 off their garments in the middleH2677, even to their buttocks, and sentH7971 them awayH7971. 5When they toldH5046 it unto DavidH1732, he sentH7971 to meet them; for the menH376 wereH1961 greatly ashamedH3637. And the kingH4428 saidH559, Tarry at JerichoH3405 until your beardsH2206 beH1961 grownH6779, and then returnH7725.

6And when the children of AmmonH5983 sawH7200 that they were becomeH887 odiousH887 to DavidH1732, the children of AmmonH5983 sentH7971 and hiredH7936 the Syrians of Beth-rehobH1050, and the Syrians of ZobahH6678, twentyH6242 thousandH505 footmen, and the kingH4428 of MaacahH4601 with a thousandH505 menH376, and the menH376 of TobH2897 twelve thousandH505 menH376. 7And when DavidH1732 heardH8085 of it, he sentH7971 JoabH3097, and all the hostH6635 of the mightyH1368 menH1368. 8And the children of AmmonH5983 cameH3318 out, and put the battleH4421 in array at the entranceH6607 of the gateH8179: and the Syrians of ZobahH6678 and of RehobH7340, and the menH376 of TobH2897 and MaacahH4601, were by themselves in the fieldH7704.

9Now when JoabH3097 sawH7200 that the battleH4421 wasH1961 set against him before and behind, he choseH977 of all the choice menH970 of IsraelH3478, and put them in array against the Syrians: 10and the restH3499 of the peopleH5971 he committed into the handH3027 of AbishaiH52 his brotherH251; and he putH5414 them in array against the children of AmmonH5983. 11And he saidH559, If the Syrians beH1961 too strongH2388 for me, then thou shalt help me; but if the children of AmmonH5983 beH1961 too strongH2388 for thee, then I will comeH1980 and help thee. 12Be of goodH2896 courage, and let us play the man for our peopleH5971, and for the citiesH5892 of our GodH430: and Jehovah do that which seemeth him goodH2896. 13So JoabH3097 and the peopleH5971 that were with him drewH5066 nigh unto the battleH4421 against the Syrians: and they fledH5127 before him. 14And when the children of AmmonH5983 sawH7200 that the Syrians were fledH5127, they likewise fledH5127 before AbishaiH52, and entered into the cityH5892. Then JoabH3097 returnedH7725 from the children of AmmonH5983, and cameH935 to JerusalemH3389.

15And when the Syrians sawH7200 that they were put to the worse before IsraelH3478, they gatheredH622 themselves togetherH3162. 16And Hadarezer sentH7971, and broughtH935 out the Syrians that were beyond the RiverH5104: and they cameH935 to HelamH2431, with ShobachH7731 the captain of the hostH6635 of Hadarezer at their head. 17And it was toldH5046 DavidH1732; and he gatheredH622 all IsraelH3478 together, and passedH5674 over the JordanH3383, and cameH935 to HelamH2431. And the Syrians set themselves in array against DavidH1732, and foughtH3898 with him. 18And the Syrians fledH5127 before IsraelH3478; and DavidH1732 slewH2026 of the Syrians the men of sevenH7651 hundredH3967 chariotsH7393, and fortyH705 thousandH505 horsemenH6571, and smote ShobachH7731 the captain of their hostH6635, so that he diedH4191 there. 19And when all the kingsH4428 that were servantsH5650 to Hadarezer sawH7200 that they were put to the worse before IsraelH3478, they made peace with IsraelH3478, and servedH5647 them. So the Syrians fearedH3372 to help the children of AmmonH5983 any more.
