2 Samuel 12
1And Jehovah sentH7971 NathanH5416 unto DavidH1732. And he cameH935 unto him, and saidH559 unto him, There wereH1961 twoH8147 menH376 in oneH259 cityH5892; the oneH259 richH6223, and the other poorH7326. 2The richH6223 man had exceeding manyH7235 flocksH6629 and herdsH1241; 3but the poorH7326 man had nothingH369, save oneH259 littleH6996 ewe lamb, which he had boughtH7069 and nourished up: and it grewH1431 up togetherH3162 with him, and with his children; it did eatH398 of his own morselH6595, and drankH8354 of his own cupH3563, and layH7901 in his bosomH2436, and was unto him as a daughterH1323. 4And there cameH935 a traveller unto the richH6223 manH376, and he sparedH2550 to takeH3947 of his own flockH6629 and of his own herdH1241, to dress for the wayfaring manH376 that was comeH935 unto him, but tookH3947 the poorH7326 man’sH376 lamb, and dressed it for the manH376 that was comeH935 to him. 5And David’s angerH639 was greatly kindled against the manH376; and he saidH559 to NathanH5416, As Jehovah liveth, the manH376 that hath done this is worthy to die: 6and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thingH1697, and because he had no pityH2550.
7And NathanH5416 saidH559 to DavidH1732, Thou art the manH376. ThusH3541 saith Jehovah, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, I anointedH4886 thee kingH4428 over IsraelH3478, and I deliveredH5337 thee out of the handH3027 of SaulH7586; 8and I gaveH5414 thee thy master’sH113 houseH1004, and thy master’sH113 wivesH802 into thy bosomH2436, and gaveH5414 thee the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478 and of JudahH3063; and if that had been too littleH4592, I would have addedH3254 unto thee such and such things. 9Wherefore hast thou despisedH959 the wordH1697 of Jehovah, to do that which is evilH7451 in his sight? thou hast smitten UriahH223 the HittiteH2850 with the swordH2719, and hast takenH3947 his wifeH802 to be thy wifeH802, and hast slainH2026 him with the swordH2719 of the children of AmmonH5983. 10NowH6258 thereforeH6258 the swordH2719 shall never departH5493 from thy houseH1004, because thou hast despisedH959 me, and hast takenH3947 the wifeH802 of UriahH223 the HittiteH2850 to beH1961 thy wifeH802. 11ThusH3541 saith Jehovah, Behold, I will raiseH6965 up evilH7451 against thee out of thine ownH5869 houseH1004; and I will takeH3947 thy wivesH802 before thine eyesH5869, and giveH5414 them unto thy neighborH7453, and he shall lieH7901 with thy wivesH802 in the sight of this sunH8121. 12For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thingH1697 before all IsraelH3478, and before the sunH8121. 13And DavidH1732 saidH559 unto NathanH5416, I have sinnedH2398 against Jehovah. And NathanH5416 saidH559 unto DavidH1732, Jehovah alsoH1571 hath putH4191 awayH5674 thy sinH2398; thou shalt not dieH4191. 14Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemiesH341 of Jehovah to blaspheme, the child alsoH1571 that is born unto thee shall surely dieH4191. 15And NathanH5416 departed unto his houseH1004.
And Jehovah struckH5062 the childH3206 that Uriah’s wifeH802 bare unto DavidH1732, and it was very sick. 16DavidH1732 therefore besought GodH430 for the child; and DavidH1732 fastedH6684, and wentH935 in, and layH7901 all night upon the earthH776. 17And the eldersH2205 of his houseH1004 aroseH6965, and stoodH6965 beside him, to raiseH6965 him up from the earthH776: but he wouldH14 not, neither did he eat breadH3899 with them. 18And it came to pass on the seventhH7637 dayH3117, that the childH3206 diedH4191. And the servantsH5650 of DavidH1732 fearedH3372 to tellH5046 him that the childH3206 wasH1961 deadH4191; for they saidH559, Behold, while the childH3206 wasH1961 yet aliveH2416, we spake unto him, and he hearkened not unto our voiceH6963: howH349 will he then vex himself, if we tellH5046 him that the childH3206 is deadH4191! 19But when DavidH1732 sawH7200 that his servantsH5650 were whispering together, DavidH1732 perceived that the childH3206 was deadH4191; and DavidH1732 saidH559 unto his servantsH5650, Is the childH3206 deadH4191? And they saidH559, He is deadH4191. 20Then DavidH1732 aroseH6965 from the earthH776, and washedH7364, and anointed himself, and changedH2498 his apparel; and he cameH935 into the houseH1004 of Jehovah, and worshipped: then he cameH935 to his own houseH1004; and when he required, they setH7760 breadH3899 before him, and he did eatH398. 21Then saidH559 his servantsH5650 unto him, What thingH1697 is this that thou hast done? thou didst fastH6684 and weepH1058 for the childH3206, while it was aliveH2416; but whenH834 the childH3206 was deadH4191, thou didst riseH6965 and eatH398 breadH3899. 22And he saidH559, While the childH3206 was yetH5750 aliveH2416, I fastedH6684 and weptH1058: for I saidH559, Who knoweth whether Jehovah will not be gracious to me, that the childH3206 may live? 23But nowH6258 he is deadH4191, wherefore should I fastH6684? can I bringH7725 him backH7725 againH5750? I shall goH1980 to him, but he will not returnH7725 to me.
24And DavidH1732 comfortedH5162 Bath-sheba his wifeH802, and wentH935 in unto her, and layH7901 with her: and she bare a sonH1121, and he calledH7121 his nameH8034 SolomonH8010. And Jehovah lovedH157 him; 25and he sentH7971 by the handH3027 of NathanH5416 the prophetH5030; and he calledH7121 his nameH8034 Jedidiah, for Jehovah’s sakeH5668.
26Now JoabH3097 foughtH3898 against RabbahH7237 of the children of AmmonH5983, and tookH3920 the royal cityH5892. 27And JoabH3097 sentH7971 messengersH4397 to DavidH1732, and saidH559, I have foughtH3898 against RabbahH7237; yea, I have takenH3920 the cityH5892 of watersH4325. 28NowH6258 thereforeH6258 gatherH622 the restH3499 of the peopleH5971 together, and encampH2583 against the cityH5892, and take it; lestH6435 I take the cityH5892, and it be calledH7121 after my nameH8034. 29And DavidH1732 gatheredH622 all the peopleH5971 together, and went to RabbahH7237, and foughtH3898 against it, and tookH3920 it. 30And he tookH3947 the crownH5850 of their kingH4428 from off his headH7218; and the weightH4948 thereof wasH1961 a talentH3603 of goldH2091, and in it wereH1961 preciousH3368 stonesH68; and it wasH1961 set on David’s headH7218. And he broughtH3318 forthH3318 the spoilH7998 of the cityH5892, exceeding muchH7235. 31And he broughtH3318 forthH3318 the peopleH5971 that were therein, and putH7760 them under sawsH4050, and under harrows of ironH1270, and under axes of ironH1270, and madeH6213 them passH5674 through the brickkiln: and thusH3651 did he unto all the citiesH5892 of the children of AmmonH5983. And DavidH1732 and all the peopleH5971 returnedH7725 unto JerusalemH3389.
