Consecration of the Firstborn
1Then the LordH3068 spokeH1696 to MosesH4872, sayingH559, 2“1SanctifyH6942 to Me everyH3605 firstbornH1060, the firstH6363 2offspringH6363 of everyH3605 wombH7358 among the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478, both of manH120 and beastH929; it belongs to Me.”
3MosesH4872 saidH559 to the peopleH5971, “3RememberH2142 thisH2088 dayH3117 in whichH834 you wentH3318 out from EgyptH4714, from the houseH1004 of 4slaveryH5650; for 5by 6a powerfulH2392 handH3027 the LordH3068 broughtH3318 you out from thisH2088 place. 7And nothingH3808 leavenedH2557 shall be eatenH398. 4On this dayH3117 in the 8monthH2320 of AbibH24, you are about to goH3318 forthH3318. 5It shall be whenH3588 the LordH3068 9bringsH935 you to the landH776 of the CanaaniteH3669, the HittiteH2850, the AmoriteH567, the HiviteH2340 and the JebusiteH2983, whichH834 10He sworeH7650 to your fathersH1 to giveH5414 you, a landH776 flowingH2100 with milkH2461 and honeyH1706, 11that you shall 12observeH5647 thisH2088 riteH5656 in thisH2088 monthH2320. 6For 13sevenH7651 daysH3117 you shall eatH398 unleavenedH4682 breadH4682, and on the seventhH7637 dayH3117 there shall be a feastH2282 to the LordH3068. 7UnleavenedH4682 breadH4682 shall be eatenH398 throughout the sevenH7651 daysH3117; and 14nothingH3808 leavenedH2557 shall be seenH7200 15among you, norH3808 shall any leavenH7603 be seenH7200 16among you in allH3605 your bordersH1366. 817You shall tellH5046 your sonH1121 on that dayH3117, sayingH559, ‘It is becauseH5668 of whatH2088 the LordH3068 didH6213 for me when I cameH3318 out of EgyptH4714.’ 9And 18it shall 19serveH1961 as a signH226 to you on your handH3027, and as a reminderH2146 20on your foreheadH996H5869, that the lawH8451 of the LordH3068 may be in your mouthH6310; for with 21a powerfulH2389 handH3027 the LordH3068 broughtH3318 you out of EgyptH4714. 10Therefore, you shall 22keepH8104 thisH2088 ordinanceH2708 at its appointedH4150 timeH4150 from 23yearH3117 to yearH3117.
11“Now whenH3588 24the LordH3068 bringsH935 you to the landH776 of the CanaaniteH3669, as 25He sworeH7650 to you and to your fathersH1, and givesH5414 it to you, 1226you shall 27devoteH5674 to the LordH3068 the firstH6363 28offspringH6363 of everyH3605 wombH7358, and 29the firstH6363 offspringH6363 of everyH3605 beastH929 that you ownH1961; the malesH2145 belong to the LordH3068. 13But 30everyH3605 firstH6363 31offspringH6363 of a donkeyH2543 you shall redeemH6299 with a lambH7716, but ifH518 you do not redeemH6299 it, then you shall breakH6202 its neckH6202; and 32everyH3605 firstbornH1060 of manH120 among your sonsH1121 you shall redeemH6299. 1433And it shall be whenH3588 your sonH1121 asksH7592 you in timeH4279 to comeH4279, sayingH559, ‘WhatH4100 is thisH2088?’ then you shall sayH559 to him, ‘34With a 35powerfulH2392 handH3027 the LordH3068 broughtH3318 us out of EgyptH4714, from the houseH1004 of 36slaveryH5650. 15It cameH1961 about, whenH3588 PharaohH6547 was stubbornH7185 about lettingH7971 us goH7971, that the 37LordH3068 killedH2026 everyH3605 firstbornH1060 in the landH776 of EgyptH4714, bothH4480 the firstbornH1060 of manH120 and the firstbornH1060 of beastH929. ThereforeH5921H3651, I sacrificeH2076 to the LordH3068 the malesH2145, the firstH6363 38offspringH6363 of everyH3605 wombH7358, but everyH3605 firstbornH1060 of my sonsH1121 I redeemH6299.’ 16So 39it shall 40serveH1961 as a signH226 on your handH3027 and as 41phylacteriesH2903 42on your foreheadH996H5869, for with a 43powerfulH2392 handH3027 the LordH3068 broughtH3318 us out of EgyptH4714.”
God Leads the People
17Now when PharaohH6547 had letH7971 the peopleH5971 goH7971, GodH430 did not leadH5148 them by the wayH1870 of the landH776 of the PhilistinesH6430, evenH3588 thoughH3588 it was nearH7138; for GodH430 saidH559, “44The peopleH5971 mightH6435 changeH5162 their mindsH5162 when they seeH7200 warH4421, and returnH7725 to EgyptH4714.” 18Hence GodH430 ledH5437 the peopleH5971 aroundH5437 by the wayH1870 of the wildernessH4057 to the 45RedH5488H3220 SeaH3220; and the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 wentH5927 up 46in martialH2571 arrayH2571 from the landH776 of EgyptH4714. 19MosesH4872 tookH3947 47the bonesH6106 of JosephH3130 with him, for he had made the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 solemnlyH7650 swearH7650, sayingH559, “GodH430 will surelyH6485 48takeH6485 careH6485 of you, and you shall carryH5927 my bonesH6106 from hereH2088 with you.” 20Then they setH5265 out from 49SuccothH5523 and campedH2583 in EthamH864 on the edgeH7097 of the wildernessH4057. 2150The LordH3068 was goingH1980 beforeH6440 them in a pillarH5982 of cloudH6051 by dayH3119 to leadH5148 them on the wayH1870, and in a pillarH5982 of fireH784 by nightH3915 to giveH215 them lightH215, that they might 51travelH1980 by dayH3119 and by nightH3915. 2252He 53did not takeH4185 awayH4185 the pillarH5982 of cloudH6051 by dayH3119, norH3808 the pillarH5982 of fireH784 by nightH3915, from beforeH6440 the peopleH5971.
