Deuteronomy 22
Sundry Laws
“1You shall not seeH7200 your 2countryman’sH251 oxH7794 orH176 his sheepH7716 strayingH5080 awayH5080, and 3payH5956 noH5956 attentionH5956 to them; you shall certainlyH7725 bringH7725 them backH7725 to your countrymanH251. 2IfH518 your countrymanH251 is not nearH7138 you, or if you do not knowH3045 him, then you shall bringH622 it homeH8432 to your houseH1004, and it shall remainH1961 with you untilH5704 your countrymanH251 looksH1875 for it; then you shall restoreH7725 it to him. 3ThusH3651 you shall doH6213 with his donkeyH2543, and you shall doH6213 the sameH3651 with his garmentH8071, and you shall doH6213 likewiseH3651 with anythingH3605 lostH9 by your countrymanH251, whichH834 he has lostH6 and you have foundH4672. You are not allowedH3201 to 4neglectH5956 them. 4You shall not seeH7200 your countryman’sH251 donkeyH2543 orH176 his oxH7794 fallenH5307 downH5307 on the wayH1870, and 5payH5956 noH5956 attentionH5956 to them; you shall certainlyH6965 helpH6965 him to raiseH6965 them up.
“A womanH802 shall not wearH1961 man’sH1397 clothingH3627, norH3808 shall a manH1397 putH3847 on a woman’sH802 clothingH8071; for whoeverH3605 doesH6213 theseH428 thingsH428 is an abominationH8441 to the LordH3068 your GodH430.
“IfH3588 you happenH7122 to comeH7122 upon a bird’sH6833 nestH7064 along the wayH1870, in anyH3605 treeH6086 orH176 on the groundH776, with youngH667 onesH667 orH176 eggsH1000, and the motherH517 sittingH7257 on the youngH667 orH176 on the eggsH1000, 6you shall not takeH3947 the motherH517 with the youngH1121; 7you shall certainlyH7971 letH7971 the motherH517 goH7971, but the youngH1121 you may takeH3947 for yourself, 7in orderH4616 that it may be wellH3190 with you and that you may prolongH748 your daysH3117.
“WhenH3588 you buildH1129 a newH2319 houseH1004, you shall makeH6213 a parapetH4624 for your roofH1406, so that you will not bringH7760 bloodguiltH1818 on your houseH1004 ifH3588 anyoneH5307 fallsH5307 from it.
“8You shall not sowH2232 your vineyardH3754 with twoH3610 kindsH3610 of seed, orH6435 9allH4395 the produceH4395 of the seedH2233 whichH834 you have sownH2232 and the increaseH8393 of the vineyardH3754 will becomeH6942 defiledH6942.
“10You shall not plowH2790 with an oxH7794 and a donkeyH2543 togetherH3164.
“11You shall not wearH3847 a materialH8162 mixedH8162 of woolH6785 and linenH6593 togetherH3164.
“12You shall makeH6213 yourself tasselsH1434 on the fourH702 cornersH3671 of your garmentH3682 with whichH834 you coverH3680 yourself.
Laws on Morality
“13IfH3588 anyH376 manH376 takesH3947 a wifeH802 and goesH935 in to her and then 14turnsH8130 againstH8130 her, 14and chargesH7760 her with shamefulH5949 deedsH1697 and 15publiclyH3318 defamesH8034H7451H3318 her, and saysH559, ‘I tookH3947 thisH2088 womanH802, but when I cameH7126 nearH7126 her, I did not findH4672 her a virginH1331,’ 15then the girl’sH5291 fatherH1 and her motherH517 shall takeH3947 and bringH3318 out the evidence of the girl’sH5291 virginityH1331 to the eldersH2205 of the cityH5892 at the gateH8179. 16The girl’sH5291 fatherH1 shall sayH559 to the eldersH2205, ‘I gaveH5414 my daughterH1323 to thisH2088 manH376 for a wifeH802, but he 16turnedH8130 againstH8130 her; 17and beholdH2009, he has chargedH7760 her with shamefulH5949 deedsH1697, sayingH559, “I did not findH4672 your daughterH1323 a virginH1331.” But 17thisH428 is the evidenceH1331 of my daughter’sH1323 virginityH1331.’ And they shall spreadH6566 the garmentH8071 beforeH6440 the eldersH2205 of the cityH5892. 18So 18the eldersH2205 of that cityH5892 shall takeH3947 the manH376 and chastiseH3256 him, 19and they shall fineH6064 him a hundredH3967 shekels of silverH3701 and giveH5414 it to the girl’sH5291 fatherH1, becauseH3588 he 19publiclyH3318 defamedH8034H7451H3318 a virginH1330 of IsraelH3478. And she shall remainH1961 his wifeH802; he cannotH3201H3808 20divorceH7971 her allH3605 his daysH3117.
“But ifH518 thisH2088 2122chargeH1697 is trueH571, that the girlH5291 was not foundH4672 a virginH1331, 21then they shall bringH3318 out the girlH5291 to the doorwayH6607 of her father’sH1 houseH1004, and the menH376 of her cityH5892 shall stoneH5619 her 23to deathH4191 becauseH3588 she has 24committedH6213 an actH5039 of follyH5039 in IsraelH3478 by playingH2181 the harlotH2181 in her father’sH1 houseH1004; thus 25you shall purgeH1197 the evilH7451 from amongH7130 you.
“26IfH3588 a manH376 is foundH4672 lyingH7901 with a marriedH1166H1167 womanH802, then bothH1571H8147 of them shall dieH4191, the manH376 who layH7901 with the womanH802, and the womanH802; thus you shall purgeH1197 the evilH7451 from IsraelH3478.
“27IfH3588 there is a girlH5291 who is a virginH1330 engagedH781 to a manH376, and another manH376 findsH4672 her in the cityH5892 and liesH7901 with her, 24then you shall bringH3318 them bothH8147 out to the gateH8179 of that cityH5892 and you shall stoneH5619 them 28to deathH4191; the girlH5291, becauseH5921H1697H834 she did not cryH6817 out in the cityH5892, and the manH376, becauseH5921H1697H834 he has violatedH6031 his neighbor’sH7453 wifeH802. Thus you shall purgeH1197 the evilH7451 from amongH7130 you.
“But ifH518 in the fieldH7704 the manH376 findsH4672 the girlH5291 who is engagedH781, and the manH376 forcesH2388 her and liesH7901 with her, then onlyH905 the manH376 whoH834 liesH7901 with her shall dieH4191. 26But you shall doH6213 nothingH3808H1697 to the girlH5291; thereH369 is noH369 sinH2399 in the girlH5291 worthy of deathH4194, for justH3152 as a manH376 risesH6965 againstH5921 his neighborH7453 and murdersH7523 him, soH3651 is thisH2088 caseH1697. 27WhenH3588 he foundH4672 her in the fieldH7704, the engagedH781 girlH5291 criedH6817 out, but thereH369 was noH369 one to saveH3467 her.
“29IfH3588 a manH376 findsH4672 a girlH5291 who is a virginH1330, whoH834 is not engagedH781, and seizesH8610 her and liesH7901 with her and they are discoveredH4672, 29then the manH376 who layH7901 with her shall giveH5414 to the girl’sH5291 fatherH1 fiftyH2572 shekels of silverH3701, and she shall becomeH1961 his wifeH802 becauseH8478H834 he has violatedH6031 her; he cannotH3201H3808 divorceH7971 her allH3605 his daysH3117.
“3031A manH376 shall not takeH3947 his father’sH1 wifeH802 so that he will not uncoverH1540 his father’sH1 skirtH3671.
