Deuteronomy 9

Israel Provoked God

1“HearH8085, O IsraelH3478! You are crossingH5674 overH5674 the JordanH3383 todayH3117 to goH935 in to dispossessH3423 1nationsH1471 greaterH1419 and mightierH6099 thanH4480 you, greatH1419 citiesH5892 23fortifiedH1219 to heavenH8064, 2a peopleH5971 greatH1419 and tallH7311, the sonsH1121 of the AnakimH6062, whomH834 you knowH3045 and of whomH834 you have heardH8085 it said, ‘4WhoH4310 can standH3320 beforeH6440 the sonsH1121 of AnakH6061?’ 3KnowH3045 therefore todayH3117 that 5it is the LordH3068 your GodH430 who is crossingH5674 overH5674 beforeH6440 you as 6a consumingH398 fireH784. He will destroyH8045 them and He will subdueH3665 them beforeH6440 you, so that 7you may driveH3423 them out and destroyH6 them quicklyH4118, justH3512 as the LordH3068 has spokenH1696 to you.

4“8Do not sayH559 in your heartH3824 when the LordH3068 your GodH430 has drivenH1920 them out beforeH4480H6440 9you, ‘Because of my righteousnessH6666 the LordH3068 has broughtH935 me in to possessH3423 thisH2088 landH776,’ but it is 10because of the wickednessH7564 of theseH428 nationsH1471 that the LordH3068 is dispossessingH3423 them beforeH4480H6440 you. 5It is 11not for your righteousnessH6666 or for the uprightnessH3476 of your heartH3824 that you are goingH935 to possessH3423 their landH776, but it is becauseH3588 of the wickednessH7564 of theseH428 nationsH1471 that the LordH3068 your GodH430 is drivingH3423 them out beforeH4480H6440 you, in orderH4616 to confirmH6965 12the 13oathH1697 whichH834 the LordH3068 sworeH7650 to your fathersH1, to AbrahamH85, IsaacH3327 and JacobH3290.

6“KnowH3045, then, it is not because of your righteousnessH6666 that the LordH3068 your GodH430 is givingH5414 you thisH2088 goodH2896 landH776 to possessH3423, for you are 14a 15stubbornH7186H6203 peopleH5971. 7RememberH2142, do not forgetH7911 howH854H834 you provokedH7107 the LordH3068 your GodH430 to wrathH7107 in the wildernessH4057; 16from the dayH3117 that you leftH3318 the landH776 of EgyptH4714 untilH5704 you arrivedH935 at thisH2088 placeH4725, you have beenH1961 rebelliousH4784 againstH5973 the LordH3068. 8Even 17at HorebH2722 you provokedH7107 the LordH3068 to wrathH7107, and the LordH3068 was so angryH599 with you that He would have destroyedH8045 you. 9When I wentH5927 up to the mountainH2022 to receiveH3947 the tabletsH3871 of stoneH68, the tabletsH3871 of the covenantH1285 whichH834 the LordH3068 had madeH3772 with you, then I remainedH3427 on the mountainH2022 fortyH705 daysH3117 and nightsH3915; 18I neitherH3808 ateH398 breadH3899 norH3808 drankH8354 waterH4325. 10The LordH3068 gaveH5414 me the twoH8147 tabletsH3871 of stoneH68 19writtenH3789 by the fingerH676 of GodH430; and on them were allH3605 the wordsH1697 whichH834 the LordH3068 had spokenH1696 with you at the mountainH2022 from the midstH8432 of the fireH784 on the dayH3117 of the assemblyH6951. 11It cameH1961 about 20at the endH7093 of fortyH705 daysH3117 and nightsH3915 that the LordH3068 gaveH5414 me the twoH8147 tabletsH3871 of stoneH68, the tabletsH3871 of the covenantH1285. 1221Then the LordH3068 saidH559 to me, ‘AriseH6965, goH3381 downH3381 from hereH2088 quicklyH4118, for your peopleH5971 whomH834 you broughtH3318 out of EgyptH4714 have actedH7843 corruptlyH7843. They have 22quicklyH4118 turnedH5493 asideH5493 from the wayH1870 whichH834 I commandedH6680 them; they have madeH6213 a moltenH4541 imageH4541 for themselves.’ 13The 23LordH3068 spokeH559 further to me, sayingH559, ‘I have seenH7200 thisH2088 peopleH5971, and indeedH2009, it is a 2425stubbornH7186H6203 peopleH5971. 1426LetH7503 Me aloneH4480H7503, that I may destroyH8045 them and 27blotH4229 out their nameH8034 from underH8478 heavenH8064; and I will makeH6213 of you a nationH1471 mightierH6099 and greaterH7227 thanH4480 they.’

15“28So I turnedH6437 and cameH3381 downH3381 from the mountainH2022 while the mountainH2022 was burningH1197 with fireH784, and the twoH8147 tabletsH3871 of the covenantH1285 were in my twoH8147 handsH3027. 16And I sawH7200 that you had indeedH2009 sinnedH2398 against the LordH3068 your GodH430. You had madeH6213 for yourselves a moltenH4541 calfH5695; you had turnedH5493 asideH5493 quicklyH4118 from the wayH1870 whichH834 the LordH3068 had commandedH6680 you. 17I tookH8610 holdH8610 of the twoH8147 tabletsH3871 and threwH7993 them from my handsH3027 and smashedH7665 them before your eyesH5869. 1829I fellH5307 downH5307 beforeH6440 the LordH3068, 30as at the firstH7223, fortyH705 daysH3117 and nightsH3915; 31I neitherH3808 ateH398 breadH3899 norH3808 drankH8354 waterH4325, 32becauseH5921 of allH3605 your sinH2403 whichH834 you had committedH2398 in doingH6213 whatH7451 was evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the LordH3068 to provokeH3707 Him to angerH3707. 19For 33I was afraidH3025 of the angerH639 and hotH2534 displeasureH2534 with whichH834 the LordH3068 was wrathfulH7107 againstH5921 you in order to destroyH8045 you, 34but the LordH3068 listenedH8085 to me that timeH6471 alsoH1571. 20The LordH3068 was angryH599 enoughH3966 with AaronH175 to destroyH8045 him; so I alsoH1571 prayedH6419 for AaronH175 at the sameH1931 timeH6256. 2135I tookH3947 your 36sinfulH2403 thing, the calfH5695 whichH834 you had madeH6213, and burnedH8313 it with fireH784 and crushedH3807 it, grindingH2912 it veryH3190 smallH3190 untilH5704H834 it was as fineH1854 as dustH6083; and I threwH7993 its dustH6083 into the brookH5158 that cameH3381 downH3381 from the mountainH2022.

22“Again at 37TaberahH8404 and at 38MassahH4532 and at 39Kibroth-hattaavahH6914 you provokedH7107 the LordH3068 to wrathH7107. 23When the LordH3068 sentH7971 you from 40Kadesh-barneaH6947, sayingH559, ‘41GoH5927 up and possessH3423 the landH776 whichH834 I have givenH5414 you,’ then you rebelledH4784 againstH854 the 42commandH6310 of the LordH3068 your GodH430; 43you neitherH3808 believedH539 Him norH3808 listenedH8085 to His voiceH6963. 2444You have beenH1961 rebelliousH4784 againstH5973 the LordH3068 from the dayH3117 I knewH3045 you.

25“45So I fellH5307 downH5307 beforeH6440 the LordH3068 the fortyH705 daysH3117 and nightsH3915, whichH834 I 46didH5307 becauseH3588 the LordH3068 had saidH559 He would destroyH8045 you. 2647I prayedH6419 to the LordH3068 and saidH559, ‘O LordH136 GodH3068, do not destroyH7843 Your peopleH5971, even Your inheritanceH5159, whomH834 You have redeemedH6299 through Your greatnessH1433, whomH834 You have broughtH3318 out of EgyptH4714 with a mightyH2389 handH3027. 27RememberH2142 Your servantsH5650, AbrahamH85, IsaacH3327, and JacobH3290; do not lookH6437 at the stubbornnessH7190 of thisH2088 peopleH5971 or at their wickednessH7562 or their sinH2403. 28OtherwiseH6435 the landH776 from whichH834 You broughtH3318 us may sayH559, “48BecauseH4480H1097 the LordH3068 was not ableH3201 to bringH935 them into the landH776 whichH834 He had 49promisedH1696 them and becauseH4480 He hatedH8135 them He has broughtH3318 them out to slayH4191 them in the wildernessH4057.” 29Yet they are Your peopleH5971, even 50Your inheritanceH5159, whomH834 You have broughtH3318 out by Your 51greatH1419 powerH3581 and Your outstretchedH5186 armH2220.’
