Context of Numbers 27:18
16“May the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation, 17who will go out and come in before them, and who will lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the Lord will not be like sheep which have no shepherd.” So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him; 19and have him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation, and commission him in their sight. 20You shall put some of your authority on him, in order that all the congregation of the sons of Israel may obey him.

Commentaries on Numbers 27:18
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 18In whom is the spirit - This must certainly mean the Spirit of God; and because he was endued with this Spirit, therefore he was capable of leading the people. How miserably qualified is that man for the work of God who is not guided and influenced by the Holy Ghost! God never chooses a man to accomplish his designs but that one whom he himself has qualified for the work.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 18In whom is the spirit Compare Genesis 41:38. Joshua was endowed by God with the requisite spiritual qualifications for the office. Moses howerer, was to lay his hands upon him, both in order to confer formal and public appointment, and also (compare Deuteronomy 34:9) to confirm and strengthen the spiritual gifts already bestowed. The previous reception of the inner grace did not dispense with that of the outward sign; compare the case of Cornelius Acts…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-23Verses 15-23 Envious spirits do not love their successors; but Moses was not one of these. We should concern ourselves, both in our prayers and in our endeavours, for the rising generation, that religion may be maintained and advanced, when we are in our graves. God appoints a successor, even Joshua; who had signalized himself by his courage in fighting Amalek, his humility in ministering to Moses, and his faith and sincerity in witnessing against the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18-19Joshua was well prepared to become Israel’s leader. He had already led Israel in battle (compare Exodus 17:8–16). He had also served as Moses’s assistant for many years (Numbers 11:28; compare Exodus 33:11). Joshua was one of the two faithful spies who knew the people of Israel well (Numbers 13–14). The Spirit of God was with Joshua (compare 11:25–29). His close relationship with God gave him wisdom for the work ahead (for example, Deuteronomy 34:9). lay…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 18-2318. Take thee Joshua ... a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him--A strong testimony is here borne to the personality of the divine Spirit--the imposition of hands was an ancient ceremony.
