Context of Numbers 14:40
38But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive out of those men who went to spy out the land. 39When Moses spoke these words to all the sons of Israel, the people mourned greatly. In the morning, however, they rose up early and went up to the ridge of the hill country, saying, “Here we are; we have indeed sinned, but we will go up to the place which the Lord has promised.” 41But Moses said, “Why then are you transgressing the commandment of the Lord, when it will not succeed? 42Do not go up, or you will be struck down before your enemies, for the Lord is not among you.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 40We - will go up unto the place, etc. - They found themselves on the very borders of the land, and they heard God say they should not enter it, but should be consumed by a forty years' wandering in the wilderness; notwithstanding, they are determined to render vain this purpose of God, probably supposing that the temporary sorrow they felt for their late rebellion would be accepted as a sufficient atonement for their crimes. They accordingly went up, and…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 40-45Verses 40-45 Some of the Israelites were now earnest to go forward toward Canaan. But it came too late. If men would but be as earnest for heaven while their day of grace lasts, as they will be when it is over, how well would it be for them! That which has been duty in its season, when mistimed, may be turned into sin. Those who are out of the way of their duty, are not under God's protection, and go at their peril. God bade them go, and they would not…Read the comment

Yet, their wills remained rebellious, and they disobeyed the Lord's command again (14:25). Caleb and Joshua's based their initial confidence on God's promise to be with them (14:9). Yet, God would not fight with the Israelites until all the rebels had died.Read the comment

They rushed from one extreme of rashness and perversity to another, and the obstinacy of their rebellious spirit was evinced by their active preparations to ascend the hill, notwithstanding…Read the comment
