Judges 8
American Standard Version
1And the menH376 of EphraimH669 saidH559 unto him, WhyH4100 hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fightH3898 with MidianH4080? And they did chide with him sharply. 2And he saidH559 unto them, What have I nowH6258 done in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of EphraimH669 betterH2896 than the vintage of AbiezerH44? 3GodH430 hath delivered into your handH3027 the princesH8269 of MidianH4080, OrebH6159 and ZeebH2062: and what was I ableH3201 to do in comparison with you? ThenH227 their anger was abated toward him, when he had saidH1696 that.
4And GideonH1439 cameH935 to the JordanH3383, andpassedH5674 over, he, and the threeH7969 hundredH3967 menH376 that were with him, faint, yet pursuingH7291. 5And he saidH559 unto the menH376 of SuccothH5523, GiveH5414, I pray you, loaves of breadH3899 unto the peopleH5971 that follow me; for they are faint, and I am pursuingH7291 after ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759, the kingsH4428 of MidianH4080. 6And the princesH8269 of SuccothH5523 saidH559, Are the handsH3027 of ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759 nowH6258 in thy handH3027, that we should giveH5414 breadH3899 unto thine armyH6635? 7And GideonH1439 saidH559, ThereforeH3651 when Jehovah hath delivered ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759 into my handH3027, then I will tear your fleshH1320 with the thornsH6975 of the wildernessH4057 and with briersH1303. 8And he wentH5927 up thence to PenuelH6439, and spake unto them in like manner; and the menH376 of PenuelH6439 answeredH6030 him as the menH376 of SuccothH5523 had answeredH6030. 9And he spake alsoH1571 unto the menH376 of PenuelH6439, sayingH559, When I come again in peaceH7965, I will breakH5422 down this towerH4026.
10Now ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759 were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousandH505 menH376, all that were leftH3498 of all the host of the children of the eastH6924; for there fellH5307 a hundredH3967 and twentyH6242 thousandH505 menH376 that drewH8025 swordH2719. 11And GideonH1439 wentH5927 up by the wayH1870 of them that dweltH7931 in tentsH168 on the eastH6924 of NobahH5025 and JogbehahH3011, and smote the host; for the host wasH1961 secure. 12And ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759 fledH5127; and he pursuedH7291 after them; and he tookH3920 the twoH8147 kingsH4428 of MidianH4080, ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759, and discomfited all the host.
13And GideonH1439 the sonH1121 of JoashH3101 returnedH7725 from the battleH4421 from the ascentH4608 of Heres. 14And he caughtH3920 a youngH5288 manH376 of the menH376 of SuccothH5523, and inquired of him: and he describedH3789 for him the princesH8269 of SuccothH5523, and the eldersH2205 thereof, seventyH7657 and sevenH7651 menH376. 15And he cameH935 unto the menH376 of SuccothH5523, and saidH559, Behold ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759, concerningH413 whom ye did tauntH2778 me, sayingH559, Are the handsH3027 of ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759 nowH6258 in thy handH3027, that we should giveH5414 breadH3899 unto thy menH376 that are wearyH3286? 16And he tookH3947 the eldersH2205 of the cityH5892, and thornsH6975 of the wildernessH4057 and briersH1303, and with them he taught the menH376 of SuccothH5523. 17And he brake down the towerH4026 of PenuelH6439, and slewH2026 the menH376 of the cityH5892.
18Then saidH559 he unto ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759, What manner of menH376 were they whom ye slewH2026 at TaborH8396? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each oneH259 resembled the children of a kingH4428. 19And he saidH559, They were my brethren, the sonsH1121 of my motherH517: as Jehovah liveth, if ye had saved them aliveH2416, I would not slayH2026 you. 20And he saidH559 unto JetherH3500 his first-born, Up, and slayH2026 them. But the youthH5288 drewH8025 not his swordH2719; for he fearedH3372, because he was yetH5750 a youthH5288. 21Then ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759 saidH559, RiseH6965 thou, and fallH6293 upon us; for as the manH376 is, so is his strengthH1369. And GideonH1439 aroseH6965, and slewH2026 ZebahH2078 and ZalmunnaH6759, and tookH3947 the crescents that were on their camels’H1581 necksH6677.
22Then the menH376 of IsraelH3478 saidH559 unto GideonH1439, RuleH4910 thou over us, both thou, and thy sonH1121, and thy son’sH1121 sonH1121 alsoH1571; for thou hast savedH3467 us out of the handH3027 of MidianH4080. 23And GideonH1439 saidH559 unto them, I will not ruleH4910 over you, neither shall my sonH1121 ruleH4910 over you: Jehovah shall ruleH4910 over you. 24And GideonH1439 saidH559 unto them, I would makeH5414 a request of you, that ye would giveH5414 me every manH376 the ear-rings of his spoilH7998. (For they had golden ear-rings, because they were IshmaelitesH3459.) 25And they answered, We will willingly giveH5414 them. And they spreadH6566 a garmentH8071, and did castH7993 therein every manH376 the ear-rings of his spoilH7998. 26And the weightH4948 of the golden ear-rings that he requested wasH1961 a thousandH505 and sevenH7651 hundredH3967 shekels of goldH2091; besides the crescents, and the pendantsH5188, and the purpleH713 raiment that wasH1961 on the kingsH4428 of MidianH4080, and besides the chains that were about their camels’H1581 necksH6677. 27And GideonH1439 madeH6213 an ephodH646 thereof, and put it in his cityH5892, even in OphrahH6084: and all IsraelH3478 playedH2181 the harlot after it there; and it becameH1961 a snareH4170 unto GideonH1439, and to his houseH1004. 28So MidianH4080 was subduedH3665 before the children of IsraelH3478, and they liftedH5375 up their headsH7218 no more. And the landH776 had rest fortyH705 yearsH8141 in the daysH3117 of GideonH1439.
29And JerubbaalH3378 the sonH1121 of JoashH3101 went and dweltH3427 in his own houseH1004. 30And GideonH1439 had threescore and ten sonsH1121 of his body begotten; for he had manyH7227 wivesH802. 31And his concubineH6370 that was in ShechemH7927, she alsoH1571 bare him a sonH1121, and he called his nameH8034 AbimelechH40. 32And GideonH1439 the sonH1121 of JoashH3101 diedH4191 in a goodH2896 old age, and was buriedH6912 in the sepulchre of JoashH3101 his fatherH1, in OphrahH6084 of the Abiezrites.
33And it came to pass, as soon as GideonH1439 wasH1961 deadH4191, that the children of IsraelH3478 turnedH7725 again, and playedH2181 the harlot after the Baalim, and madeH7760 Baal-berithH1170 their godH430. 34And the children of IsraelH3478 rememberedH2142 not Jehovah their GodH430, who had deliveredH5337 them out of the handH3027 of all their enemiesH341 on every side; 35neither showed they kindness to the houseH1004 of JerubbaalH3378, who is GideonH1439, according to all the goodness which he had showed unto IsraelH3478.
