19ThisαὕτηhautēG3778isthe testimonyμαρτυρίαmarturiaG3141of JohnἸωάννουIōannouG2491,whenὅτεhoteG3753the JewsἸουδαῖοιIoudaioiG2453sentἀπέστειλανapesteilanG649priestsἱερεῖςhi'ereisG2409and LevitesΛευίταςLeuitasG3019to himfrom JerusalemἹεροσολύμωνHi'erosolumōnG2414to askἐρωτήσωσινerōtēsōsinG2065him, “WhoτίςtisG5101are you?”

20And he confessedὡμολόγησενhōmologēsenG3670and did not denyἠρνήσατοērnēsatoG720; and this is whathe confessedὡμολόγησενhōmologēsenG3670: “I amεἰμὶeimiG1510not theChristχριστός.¶christosG5547.”

21And sothey askedἠρώτησανērōtēsanG2065him, “WhatτίtiG5101thenοὖν;ounG3767? Are youElijahἨλίαςĒliasG2243?”And he saidλέγει·legeiG3004, “I amG1510not.” “Are youthe ProphetπροφήτηςprophētēsG4396?”And he answeredἀπεκρίθη·apekrithēG611, “NoG3756.”

22ThenοὖνounG3767they saidλέγειςlegeisG3004to him, “WhoτίςtisG5101are you? Tell us,soG2443thatG2443we may giveδῶμενdōmenG1325an answerἀπόκρισινapokrisinG612to thoseτοῖςtoisG3588who sentπέμψασινpempsasinG3992us. WhatτίtiG5101do you sayG3004aboutπερὶperiG4012yourselfG4572?”

23He saidἔφη·ephēG5346, “I amthe voiceφωνὴphōnēG5456of one callingG994outG994in the wildernessἐρήμῳ·erēmōG2048, ‘MakeG2116the wayὁδὸνhodonG3598of the Lordκυρίου·kuriouG2962straightG2116,’as IsaiahἨσαΐαςĒsaiasG2268the prophetπροφήτης.prophētēsG4396saidG3004.”

24And the messengershad beenἦσανēsanG1510sentἀπεσταλμένοιapestalmenoiG649from the PhariseesΦαρισαίωνPharisaiōnG5330.

25They askedἠρώτησανērōtēsanG2065him, and saidG3004to him, “WhyτίtiG5101thenοὖνounG3767are you baptizingβαπτίζειςbaptizeisG907,ifεἰeiG1487you are not theChristχριστὸςchristosG5547,norοὐδὲoudeG3761ElijahἨλίαςĒliasG2243,norοὐδὲoudeG3761the Prophetπροφήτης;prophētēsG4396?”

26JohnἸωάννηςIōannēsG2491answeredἀπεκρίθηapekrithēG611them, sayingλέγων·legōnG3004, “I baptizeβαπτίζωbaptizōG907in waterὕδατι·hudatiG5204, butamongμέσοςmesosG3319you standsG4739One whomὃνhonG3739you do not knowG3609.

27It isHe who comesἐρχόμενος,erchomenosG2064afterὀπίσωopisōG3694me, of whom I amεἰμὶeimiG1510not worthyἄξιοςaxiosG514evento untieλύσωlusōG3089thestrapἱμάνταhimantaG2438of His sandalὑποδήματος.hupodēmatosG5266.”
